Right now, nothing is chasing me. A Guided Nervous System De Escalation
Do you feel a tightening in your chest or racing thoughts about a future that hasn't happened yet? In this episode, we spend 10 minutes retraining your nervous system to understand one simple, fundamental truth: You are safe right now. Join Martin, a clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic, for a guided session designed to help you stop the panic and feel comfortable in your own skin again. 🌬️ The Gold Standard: Coherent BreathingWe begin with Coherent Breathing, a powerful technique for improving heart rate variability and calming social anxiety. By inhaling for a count of five and exhaling for six, you manually signal to your vagus nerve that it is time to switch off the stress response and de-escalate. ✨ Visualization & AffirmationsVisualize your nervous system shifting from a high-voltage network of light to a soft, warm glow. Repeat these internal affirmations to ground yourself in the present:"Right now, nothing is chasing me." "My nervous system can stand down." "I don’t need to solve the future in this breath." 💡 3 Daily Caring Tips for a Happier LifeTo help you carry this peace into the rest of your day, Martin shares three practical wellness "hacks": The Two-Minute Tech Fast: Put your phone away every two hours to avoid "scroll shock." Morning Hydration First: Drink 500ml of water before your coffee, as dehydration often mimics anxiety symptoms. The "Let Them Run" Rule: If others are judging or acting out, let them. Their energy is not your responsibility. Ready for a deeper dive into your recovery? Explore the full Anxiety Breaker Course and find more resources at calminganxiety.fm. Are you stuck in a mental loop? If your mind is playing the same worries on repeat, it can feel like a physical emergency. In this episode of Calming Anxiety, your host Martin (Clinical Hypnotherapist & former Paramedic) leads you through a powerful vagus nerve reset designed to lower your cognitive load and interrupt the stress response. Through a specialized 4-2-6 breathing rhythm and NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) techniques, we signal to your brain that the mental loop is no longer a threat. Step out of the noise and back into the present with this 10-minute intervention. Inside This Meditation:The 4-2-6 Breathing Rhythm: A paramedic-tested technique to physically vent the pressure of looping thoughts. Somatic Tension Scan: Identifying and softening muscle bracing in the jaw and forehead to signal safety to the brain. A Walk Through the Trees — Calm for the Soul — Health Anxiety
🌿 A Walk Through the Trees — Calm for the Soul — Health Anxiety If health anxiety has been loud today — the checking, the scanning, the low-level vigilance that never quite switches off — this episode is for you. In today's 10-minute guided meditation, we walk a quiet forest path together. Grounded. Unhurried. And as we move through the trees, your nervous system begins, gently, to set it all down. You don't need to fix anything today. You just need to walk with me. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🕐 CHAPTERS 00:00 — Cold open — the forest path 00:29 — Welcome & introduction 01:04 — Vagus nerve breathing — 4-2-6 technique 02:35 — Forest walk visualisation begins 04:16 — Health anxiety & the body's quiet truth 05:20 — Affirmations — first pass 06:41 — Drift bridge — deepening 06:58 — Affirmations — second pass 08:32 — Three daily caring tips 09:46 — Wake up & close 10:12 — YouTube CTA — @eXHaleWithMartin ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌱 AFFIRMATIONS My body is working for me right now in this moment. I do not need to check. I do not need to scan. I am safe. Health anxiety is a pattern of thought. It is not a diagnosis. It is not the truth. I trust my body's quiet wisdom. Every breath I take is evidence that I am okay. I am allowed to feel calm. I am allowed to stop monitoring. I am allowed to rest. The forest doesn't worry about what might happen next. It simply grows and so do I. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💚 THREE DAILY CARING TIPS Tip 1 — The Five Minute Rule When a health worry arrives, give yourself full permission to address it — in five minutes. Set a quiet timer. In those five minutes, do something grounding. The worry will either have shifted, or you can assess it calmly rather than reactively. Tip 2 — Name the Pattern, Not the Symptom Instead of "I think something is wrong with my heart," try saying out loud: "My health anxiety is active right now." Naming the pattern rather than the symptom creates just enough distance for the nervous system to begin settling. Tip 3 — Return to the Ground At any point today when anxiety rises — feel the floor beneath your feet. Press down gently. The ground is there. It is solid. It is real. And so are you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📺 WATCH ON YOUTUBE — @exhaleWithMartin Over on the YouTube channel, Martin discusses the deeper feeling of being out in the open — within the woods, within nature, within yourself — in his twice-weekly monologue series. Why Do I Feel Sick When I am Anxious? | A Guide to the Anxious Gut - 10 Minutes Guided Meditation
If you have been searching for why do I feel sick when I’m anxious, you are in the right place. That cold, sinking feeling and the anxiety-induced nausea in your stomach are not signs of illness; they are signs of a protective body. With over 10 million downloads and a career dedicated to emergency medicine, I have helped thousands understand this mind-gut connection. In this session, we explore the clinical truth behind an anxious stomach. When your "fight or flight" response triggers, your body performs a tactical maneuver called vasoconstriction, shunting blood away from your digestive tract to power your limbs. Your nausea is simply your digestive organs sitting in "standby" mode while the blood is needed elsewhere. You are not sick; you are simply diverted.Episode Chapters0:00 – The Mind-Gut Connection: Understanding why your body isn't broken.1:10 – Vagus Nerve Stomach Reset: A somatic grounding exercise to signal safety to the brain.4:30 – The Clinical Truth: A professional explanation of blood shunting and nausea.5:45 – Solar Plexus Visualization: Using warm golden light to settle the nerves.6:20 – Affirmations for Peace: Releasing core bracing and trusting your body.8:30 – 3 Tips for Gut Control: Immediate tools to engage your "rest and digest" switch.10:00 – Reclaiming Control: Moving beyond the quick fix and being kind to yourself. The AffirmationsRepeat these internally to reunite mind and body in harmony:"My stomach is a barometer of my safety and right now it is settling into peace." "I am not ill, I am responding to adrenaline and this sensation is already fading." "I release the bracing in my core and trust my body's ability to heal." 3 Tips to Quench the "Anxious Knot"When you first feel that anxiety knot rising, use these three clinical tips:The Vagus Gulp: Take a slow, deliberate swallow of water to force your throat to engage the rest and digest switch. The Heat Pad Hack: Apply warmth to your stomach to physically encourage blood flow back to the area. The Soft Belly Check: Throughout the day, ask yourself "Am I bracing?" and then consciously let that tension go.A Message from MartinWe are human and we are fragile; nobody is perfect, so don't try to be. But now you have the tools to control these sensations. I Think I'm Having a Panic Attack | Guided Breathing , 10 Minute Meditation
f your heart is racing, your chest feels tight, or you feel like you’re losing control—stop. You are safe. This episode is your "emergency stop" button, designed and led by a former paramedic with 25 years of experience on the front lines of medical emergencies. In this session, we don't just "relax"; we use biological "manual overrides" to signal to your brain that the fire is out. You'll learn the medical reality behind your symptoms—like why your fingers tingle—to move your mind from a state of emotional panic back into logical control.Episode Chapters0:00 – The Paramedic’s Reassurance: A direct message of safety from Martin.1:00 – The Emergency Stop: Guided breathing to offload $CO_2$ and reset your blood pH.4:30 – The Science of the "Tingles": Understanding Respiratory Alkalosis and why your body isn't broken.5:45 – Mindful Release: Dropping the physical weight of anxiety from your jaw and shoulders.6:20 – Affirmations for Power: Reprogramming the inner narrative.8:30 – 3 Tips to Quench the Knot: Immediate actions for future moments of rising heat.9:40 – Mastering the Mind: How to go beyond the "quick fix".The AffirmationsRepeat these internally to reclaim your ownership of this moment:"My body is a masterpiece of survival, and right now, it's returning to peace." "I am the observer of these sensations, not a victim of them." "I have survived every panic attack before this, and I am already through this one." 3 Pro-Active Tips to Stop Panic EarlyWhen you first feel that knot in your stomach, use these paramedic-approved techniques:The Cold Water Shock: Splash your face with ice-cold water or hold an ice cube to trigger the mammalian dive reflex and instantly slow your heart rate.Name the Beast: Say out loud, "This is an adrenaline spike, not a heart attack." Labeling it moves brain activity from the emotional center to the logical one.The 5-Second Out-Breath: Blow all your air out for five seconds. This forces your body to take a deep, corrective inhale, triggering an automatic reset.A Note from MartinI’ve been where you are—I’ve had horrendous panic attacks in my past. It was through my work as a paramedic that I discovered how to coach the body back to calm. And in the next ten minutes, we are going to move through it together. Former frontline paramedic and clinical hypnotherapist Martin Hewlett has held the hands of people in genuine medical emergencies. He knows the difference between a body in danger and a nervous system in overdrive. Using vagus nerve breathing, deep guided visualisation, and powerful affirmations designed specifically for panic attack relief, this session will help you interrupt the panic response, calm the physical symptoms of anxiety, and return your nervous system to safety. Panic attacks feel like the end of something. They are not. They are a wave — and every wave, without exception, passes. Perfect for: panic attack relief, how to stop a panic attack, panic attack breathing, health anxiety relief, anxiety and panic, physical symptoms of anxiety, guided meditation for panic, nervous system reset. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 — Right now. Just stop. | Panic attack opening 00:32 — Welcome | Martin Hewlett, clinical hypnotherapist & former paramedic 01:23 — Find your place | Settle in 01:37 — Vagus nerve breathing — interrupt the panic response 02:07 — 4-2-6 breathing — your nervous system's off switch 03:14 — The panic is already shifting 04:00 — Visualisation — your safe place 04:51 — Panic attacks are a wave — every wave passes 05:17 — Health anxiety and chest tightness — what your body is telling you 06:06 — Affirmations — first pass 07:23 — Drift passage — float into calm 08:27 — Affirmations — second pass 08:42 — Three daily caring tips for panic attacks and health anxiety 10:25 — Wake-up close 10:42 — Share this episode 11:03 — CTA — The Anxiety Circuit Breaker at calminganxiety.fm ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ TODAY'S AFFIRMATIONS 🌿 This feeling is temporary — I have survived every panic attack before this one. 🌿 My body is not in danger — it is returning to calm right now. 🌿 I know how to breathe through panic attack symptoms — and I am doing it now. 🌿 My nervous system is strong and it is already settling. 🌿 I release the fear of the feeling — and I let it pass through me. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💛 THREE DAILY CARING TIPSName what is happening — out loud. When a panic attack begins or health anxiety spikes, say these words out loud if you can: "This is a panic attack. It is not dangerous. It will pass." Naming it accurately — not catastrophising it — activates the prefrontal cortex and begins to interrupt the fear loop. Naming it is not giving in. It is taking control. The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding reset for panic. When the physical symptoms of a panic attack feel overwhelming, ground yourself through your senses. Name five things you can see. Four you can touch. Three you can hear. Two you can smell. One you can taste. This pulls your attention out of the internal panic spiral and into the present moment. Keep it in your pocket for the next wave.Stop Googling your symptoms. If health anxiety is travelling alongside your panic attacks — and for many people it is — the single most powerful thing you can do between episodes is resist the urge to search your physical symptoms online. Every search feeds the anxiety loop. Speak to your doctor or a health professional once. Then trust the answer. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎙️ ABOUT THE SHOW Calming Anxiety with Martin Hewlett is a daily 10-minute guided meditation and clinical hypnotherapy podcast. Chest Tightness Anxiety Relief — Guided Meditation for Health Anxiety
⚠️ Important Note Before You ListenIf your chest tightness is new, sudden, or severe — especially if it is spreading to your arm, jaw, or back — please stop and call for emergency help or see a doctor immediately. That is always the right thing to do.If this is a familiar feeling — a tightness that lives with your stress, your worry, your anxiety — then you are in exactly the right place.🫁 About This EpisodeChest tightness is one of the most frightening symptoms of anxiety — and one of the most misunderstood. In this 10-minute guided meditation for chest tightness and health anxiety, clinical hypnotherapist and former frontline paramedic Martin Hewlett walks you through exactly what is happening in your body, why it is not dangerous, and how to release it.Using vagus nerve breathing, clinical hypnotherapy visualisation, and anxiety affirmations, this session is designed for anyone living with the physical symptoms of anxiety — tight chest, body tension, health anxiety, and the fear that something is seriously wrong. As a former paramedic, Martin knows the clinical difference between a body in medical danger and a nervous system caught in the anxiety loop. I Can't Catch My Breath — A 10 Minute Reset for When Anxiety Peaks
If you're searching for panic attack help, wondering what to do in a panic attack, or you've typed "I'm having a panic attack" into your phone — you're in exactly the right place. This episode was made for this moment. Your body has fired an alarm. A loud, convincing alarm. And as a clinical hypnotherapist and former frontline paramedic, I can tell you with complete certainty: the alarm is wrong. You are safe. In the next 10 minutes, we're going to prove that to your nervous system — together. This is your panic attack meditation for overwhelming anxiety relief. Whether you're dealing with a racing heart anxiety response, can't catch your breath, or feel the familiar wave of an anxiety peak rising — this session will walk you through it, step by step, using clinical breathwork, guided visualisation, and hypnotherapy-based affirmations grounded in real emergency medicine. Can't breathe anxiety is one of the most frightening sensations there is. But what you feel is adrenaline — and adrenaline has a half-life of two to three minutes. You don't need to fight it. You just need to outlast it. And you already are. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⏱️ CHAPTER MARKERS00:00 — The alarm is wrong — you are safe 00:27 — Welcome from Martin | Clinical Hypnotherapist & Former Paramedic 00:56 — Finding your quiet space 01:10 — Vagus nerve breathwork — 4-2-6 method to stop the spiral 02:17 — Why the longer exhale works | The clinical truth about adrenaline 02:47 — Paramedic perspective — what panic attack really is 04:02 — Safe place visualisation — grounding your nervous system 05:20 — Affirmations — first pass 06:27 — Bridge — deepening the calm 06:42 — Affirmations — second pass 07:52 — Returning to your centre 08:11 — Your 3 Daily Caring Tips for when anxiety peaks 09:43 — Waking up gently | Closing ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━✨ TODAY'S AFFIRMATIONSRepeat these quietly in your mind — twice through, deeper each time: 🌿 This feeling is temporary and I am safe. 🌿 My body knows how to return to calm. 🌿 I am not in danger — I am in discomfort. And discomfort always passes. 🌿 My breath is slowing and my nervous system is listening. 🌿 I have survived every difficult moment before this one. I will survive this one too. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━💙 YOUR 3 DAILY CARING TIPS — For When Anxiety Peaks1. Name It to Tame It When the spiral begins, say out loud or in your mind: "This is a panic response. It is not danger — it is chemistry." Naming it activates your prefrontal cortex — the rational brain — and begins overriding the alarm signal. 2. The Cold Water Reset Run cold water over your wrists or splash your face. This triggers the mammalian dive reflex — an ancient biological response that drops your heart rate within seconds. Not a trick. Physiology. 3. One Thing at a Time — The 5-4-3-2-1 Method When anxiety peaks, your mind races into the future. Bring it back. Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. Observation is incompatible with panic. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━🎙️ ABOUT THIS SHOWCalming Anxiety with Martin Hewlett is a daily 10-minute guided meditation and clinical hypnotherapy session — published every single day since October 2019. Calming Health Anxiety — A Guided Meditation for Peace of Mind
If the persistent worry, the checking, the Googling, the convincing yourself something is seriously wrong sounds familiar — this episode is for you. Health anxiety is exhausting, not because you are weak, but because your mind is working overtime trying to keep you safe. Today we slow that down. We quiet the noise. We come back to the only truth that matters right now. You are here. You are breathing. And you are safe. In this 10-minute guided meditation for health anxiety relief, clinical hypnotherapist and former frontline paramedic Martin Hewlett helps you break the health anxiety loop using vagus nerve breathing, clinical visualisation, and powerful affirmations for peace of mind. As a former paramedic, Martin understands — better than most — the very real difference between a medical crisis and what health anxiety tells you is a medical crisis. They feel identical. But they are not. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🕐 CHAPTERS 00:00 — Health Anxiety — Cold Open 00:39 — Welcome | Clinical Hypnotherapist & Former Paramedic 01:47 — Vagus Nerve Breathing for Health Anxiety Relief 04:40 — Visualisation — You Are the Sky 06:18 — Affirmations for Health Anxiety 08:45 — Three Daily Caring Tips for Health Anxiety 10:05 — Return & Gentle Close ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ TODAY'S AFFIRMATIONS My body is not my enemy — it is doing its best to protect me. I am not my symptoms. I am not my search history. Health anxiety is a feeling, not a diagnosis. I release the need to check. I choose trust over fear. I am safe in this moment. I am present. I am calm. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💛 THREE DAILY CARING TIPS FOR HEALTH ANXIETYPostpone the search. When the urge to Google a symptom arrives, tell yourself — not now, perhaps later. Most of the time, later never comes. Your nervous system will thank you for the space.Name it to tame it. When health anxiety spikes, say quietly to yourself: "This is health anxiety, not a medical emergency." This activates your prefrontal cortex and begins to reduce the alarm response.Do a body gratitude scan. Instead of scanning your body for problems, spend 60 seconds noticing what is working — your heart beating steadily, your lungs moving. Gratitude and anxiety cannot fully occupy the same space.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎙️ ABOUT THIS SHOW Calming Anxiety with Martin Hewlett is a free daily 10-minute guided meditation and clinical hypnotherapy session for anxiety relief, panic attack help, and peace of mind. What if this is the one I can't stop? That moment — right there — is where this session begins. This free 12-minute panic attack prevention meditation helps you interrupt the spiral before it builds, lower your anxiety alarm threshold, and calm your nervous system before a panic attack arrives. Guided by Martin Hewlett, clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic, this is daily panic attack relief for anyone living with anxiety, health anxiety, or the exhausting fear of the next one.You came here before the storm. That is wisdom.⏱ Episode Chapters00:00 — The Early Warning: Recognising the space before the panic attack 00:24 — Meet Martin: A paramedic and hypnotherapist's perspective 00:54 — If You Live With Health Anxiety: Why every sensation feels like a threat 02:07 — Reading the Signals: Your nervous system is preparing, not breaking 03:53 — The Physiological Sigh: Your body's own off-switch 05:53 — Lowering the Baseline: Why panic attacks don't come from nowhere 07:24 — Panic Attack Prevention: Quietly, daily, turning the dial down 07:58 — Guided Affirmations: Rewiring your nervous system for safety 09:23 — Three Daily Caring Tips for Panic Attack Prevention 10:51 — Grounding Back into the Room 11:03 — A Final Word of Courage💬 Guided AffirmationsDuring this session, Martin guides you to receive these words gently — not to force them, just to let them arrive like light under a door. Repeat them internally and allow them to find the parts of you that need them most."My body's signals are not my enemy. They are information.""I have felt this before. I have come through it before.""I do not need to fear the feeling. The feeling will pass.""My nervous system is learning to feel safe. Every breath helps.""I am not in danger. I am in recovery. And recovery is working."🌿 Three Daily Caring Tips for Panic Attack Prevention Name It to Tame It When you notice the early warning signs of a panic attack — elevated heart rate, shallow breath, chest tightness — say quietly to yourself: "This is adrenaline. My body is preparing, not breaking." Naming the sensation accurately reduces the fear response immediately. This is one of the most clinically validated tools in anxiety management, and it costs nothing.2. The Daily Temperature Check Once a day, just once, ask yourself: "On a scale of one to ten, how activated is my nervous system right now?" Not to fix it — just to notice it. Health anxiety thrives in the unexamined. The moment you observe it, you reduce its power.3. Reduce the Scan If health anxiety is part of your daily experience, you may be unconsciously checking your body dozens of times a day — monitoring your heart, listening for symptoms, checking your breathing. Every check sends a signal to your brain that there is something worth checking for. Today, just once, when you notice yourself scanning — pause, take the physiological sigh, and redirect. You are retraining the pattern, one moment at a time.💙 A Note from MartinYou came here today before the storm. You didn't wait for the panic attack to take hold — you chose to work with your nervous system before it could spiral. That is not a small thing. That is wisdom. If this session helped you find that narrow window — the space where everything can change — please share it with someone who needs it. Every share puts this into the hands of someone sitting exactly where you were when you pressed play. It matters more than you know. For more support and a structured path to lasting peace, visit the Anxiety Circuit Breaker at calminganxiety.fmI am Martin. After the Panic Attack Guided Recovery for When The Storm Has Passed
After the Panic Attack | Guided Recovery for When The Storm Has Passed After a panic attack, your body needs guided recovery — not more fear. This 13-minute panic attack recovery meditation helps you heal after an anxiety attack, release post-panic exhaustion, and calm your nervous system back to safety. Guided by Martin Hewlett, clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic, this session offers free daily panic attack relief — available every single day, wherever you are in the world. If you are shaking, exhausted, or quietly terrified it will happen again — this ten minutes is for you. Stay with me. ⏱ Episode Chapters 00:00 — The Aftermath: Acknowledging your courage 00:39 — Meet Martin: A paramedic's perspective on recovery 01:30 — Understanding the Storm: Why your body isn't broken 02:08 — Beginning to Breathe: Lengthening the after-panic breath 02:39 — The Physiological Sigh: The fastest reset your nervous system has 05:21 — Body Scan: Releasing the residue of adrenaline from head to toe 07:49 — Guided Affirmations: Rewiring for safety and calm 10:51 — Three Daily Caring Tips for Panic Attack Recovery 12:01 — Grounding Back into the Room 12:16 — A Final Message of Courage and Kindness 💬 Guided Affirmations for Recovery During this session, Martin guides you to receive and repeat these affirmations internally. Let them settle gently, without forcing them — just like warm light through a window. "The panic attack is over. I made it through." "My body is safe. The storm has passed." "I am recovering. With every breath, I am calmer." "I am not my anxiety. I am the calm beneath it." "Right now, in this moment, I am safe." 🌿 Three Daily Caring Tips for After a Panic Attack The Protein Bridge As a paramedic, Martin explains that a panic attack burns an enormous amount of glucose. Once your stomach has settled, have a small high-protein snack — a handful of nuts, some cheese, or a boiled egg. Stabilising your blood sugars helps prevent that shaky, trembling feeling from being mistaken for another panic attack returning2. Change the Narrative Stop saying "I had a panic attack." Instead, say this: "I had a period of high intensity, and I handled it." The language you use immediately after matters. You are the hero of this story, not the victim of it. 3. The Five-Minute Sun Soak When this episode ends, step outside for just five minutes. You don't need to go far. Allow natural light to reach your eyes and let the world show you it is still turning normally. It resets your circadian rhythm and gently signals to your brain that the threat has passed. 💙 A Note from Martin You showed up today for something frightening — and you chose recovery. That is not a small thing. That is courage. If this session helped you find your footing again, please share it with someone who might be sitting exactly where you were when you pressed play. Every share puts this into the hands of someone who needs it. This matters more than you know. Ready to break the cycle for good?
