What is the mystery? i. verse 6, “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” b. His Word is Sufficient and Final i. “mystery was made known to me” (vs 3) ii. “Has now been revealed” (5) iii. “was given” (vs 7) iv. “might now be made known” (vs 10) v. God’s Word changes people and culture, people and culture don’t change God’s Word. vi. “Accordingly, the establishment of peace between Jews and Gentiles in the church is a signal to all powers in the universe. For Paul, there is no more basic division in the human race than that between Jew and Gentile. God Gives Provision and Life 2 Samuel 16-18 1. God’s Provisions are Good and Right (16:1-4) a. Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” b. Genesis 22:14, “So Abraham called the name of the place, ‘The Lord will provide.’” (Jehovah Jireh) 2. Wannabe or a Worshipper
2 Samuel 15 “Are you a Wannabe or a Worshipper?” Absalom’s Desire to be King (1-12) His Desire Wasn’t Necessarily Wrong His Unchecked Desire Became Evil “Absalom got himself a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him.” (vs 1) And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And when he said, “Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,” Absalom would say to him, “See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man designated by the king to hear you.” Then Absalom would say, “Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice.”And whenever a man came near to pay homage to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him. Thus Absalom did to all of Israel who came to the king for judgment. “So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.” (vs 2-6b) Approval from people is not the same as Anointing from God. He trusted his own thoughts without seeking God’s. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.” Isaiah 55:8 Trusting God’s plan takes faith and perseverance His desire became a selfish pursuit at all costs. His Selfishness Seemed Right He was willing to destroy his father. He was willing to ignore and go against God. “At the end of 4 years…let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron.” vs 7 “But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, ‘As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say, Absalom is king at Hebron!’” vs 10 Instead of bowing before God and finding His purpose and His plan, he creates his own and makes it happen. He goes against the king and The King. His heart was set on building his own kingdom, not supporting the kingdom of God. David’s Desire to Serve The King (vs 13-37) He protected the people “Go quickly, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down ruin on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.” vs 14 He didn’t let pride interfere with his responsibility to protect the people. He trusted the Lord People encouraged him He remained faithful “Carry the ark of God back into the city.” vs 25 “If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me back and let me see both it and his dwelling place. But if he says, ‘I have no pleasure in you,’ behold, here I am, let him do to me what seems good to him.” vs 25-26 “But David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, barefoot and with his head covered. And all the people who were with him covered their heads, and they went up, weeping as they went.” vs 30 He turned to the Lord “And David said, ‘O Lord, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.’ While David was coming to the summit, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him.” vs 31-32 A Wannabe Desires Self, A Worshipper Desires God John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” “he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Philippians 2:6-11

Lessons About Worship
2 Samuel 2-6 1) David is Anointed King of Judah (Chapter 2) a) God promised David that he would be king over all of it, but it starts with just Judah. b) David was patient and waited on God to fulfill His promise. c) Saul’s Side i) Abner: The commander of Saul’s army’ (2:8) He knew Saul well and knew David well. He also knew that David was the anointed king by God (2 Samuel 3:9–10). ii) Ish-Bosheth: Abner had taken Ish-Bosheth, the son of Saul, and made him king over Israel. (2 Samuel 2:8) d) David’s Side i) David: He is God’s appointed and anointed king, the one God wants for all his people. He is currently king of only a section of God’s people; Judah. ii) Michal: A daughter of Saul who once was in love with David (1 Samuel 8:20) and saved David’s life when her father tried to kill him (1 Samuel 19:11–17). In the conflict between Saul and David she is given to another man. (1 Samuel 25:44) iii) Joab: Joab is chief of ‘the sons of Zeruiah’; men committed to David but they are also men’s men, warriors who are cunning and sharp. He is committed to keeping the kingship of David safe. e) David continues to grow stronger and gain support while Abner eventually reaches an agreement with David to turn over Judah to David. f) But Joab murders Abner. g) David mourns the death of Abner. h) Ishbosheth is murdered during a nap. 2) David is Anointed King of Israel (Chapter 5) i) David is anointed as the king over all Israel. ii) David marches to the city of Jerusalem and captures it to make it both the spiritual and political capital. iii) He defeats the Philistines! (1) “David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.” 5:25 3) David Worships the Ultimate King (Chapter 6) a) The Ultimate King Sends a Reminder (vs 1-11) i) David tries to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. ii) They transport the Ark on an ox-drawn cart. Uzzah, one of the men accompanying the Ark, reaches out to steady it when the oxen stumble, is struck down. Dead. iii) David is initially filled with anger and fear. iv) Worship is not whatever you want it to be. Uzzah thought it felt right to stop the Ark from falling, but it went against God’s instruction and authority. You may be operating on feeling when it comes to worship, but the starting point is not our feelings, it’s God. b) Worship Lessons from David (vs 12-23) i) Worship with Reverence (vs 12, 13) (1) Now, David has time to reflect and see God rightly, and his response is reverence. (a) “When those who bore the Ark of the LORD had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal.” vs 13 ii) Worship with Joy (vs 12-15) (1) “Rejoicing” vs 12, “Danced with all his might” vs 14, “shouting and with the sound of the horn” vs 15 (a) David is overwhelmed with the reality of God and he can’t contain his love and worship! (2) His joy was produced from reverence. His reverence came from his understanding of who God is. He was a humble, passionate, worshipper. iii) Worship with Freedom (vs 16-23) (1) David finds out that he has a critic. Michal, Saul’s daughter is watching from a window and “despised him in her heart” vs 16. (2) She is offended by his genuine worship of God, the very thing that should be attractive about David. (3) Michal, is disgusted by this and accuses David of “vulgarity” and “uncovering himself before female servants”. (i) Worship isn’t concerned with pleasing man but rather God! (4) “It was before the LORD, who chose me about your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the LORD—and I will celebrate before the LORD. I will make myself more contemptible than this, and I will be more humble than this.” 6:21-22 4) Reminders from scripture a) Worship with reverence, joy, and freedom. Find comfort in the freedom of worshipping God without critics. Give yourself to the Lord fully! b) Psalm 86:12, “I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And will glorify Your name forever.”

The Fall of Saul (Chapter 31) a. The Battle Rages On (vs 1-3) i. READ 1-3 b. Saul Gives Up (vs 4-7) i. Paul Tripp says “That's unbelief. By giving in to the pattern of self-swindling, you are not taking humbly and seriously the convicting message of the word of God. This always leads to further turning away, because the word of God is meant to be the spiritual anchor. When you cut the rope of the anchor, you give room for the evil of your heart to grow. And ultimately, like Saul, your heart is hardened and that thing that once bothered me doesn't bother me anymore.” c. The Philistines Disgrace Saul (vs 8-10) d. Valiant Men Respect the king (vs 11-13) i. Hebrews 3:12-13, “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” 3. The Rise of David (2 Samuel 1) a. David Defeats the Amalekites (vs 1) b. An Amalekite Seeks Advantage (vs 2-10) i. “his clothes torn and dirt on his head” (vs 2) ii. “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear…he said to me ‘stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.’ So I stood beside him and killed him And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.” (vs 6-10) iii. Do you tell stories to make you more of a hero than you are? Do you stretch the truth to promote your success? Are you tempted to grow your stories to impress people? Do you treat others differently because that person may bring more reward to you? c. David Mourns (vs 11-16) i. READ vs 11-16 d. David Shows God’s Heart (vs 17-27) e. The Power Within i. The power within Saul was of his own dependence, and it led him down the path to destruction. ii. The power within David was the heart of God and it led him to this point; mourning the death of his enemy! iii. Gatorade 3 picture iv. Micah 3:8 says “But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD.” v. Ephesians 3:16 says, “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being” vi. We do not lose heart, because, even “though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” 2 Corinthians 4:16

Finding the Right Way
1. David lost his way (Chapter 27) a. He knew God’s way was right i. “The LORD rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness…and may He deliver me out of all tribulation.” (26:23-24) b. He lost sight and chose the way of deception. i. “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines.” 27:1 ii. “And when it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer sought him.” 27:4 iii. “He has made himself an utter stench to his people, Israel; therefore he shall always be my servant.” vs 12 2. Saul chose the wrong way. (Chapter 28) a. He knew what way was right i. “Saul inquired of the LORD” 28:6a b. His heart was set on his own way i. “the LORD did not answer him.” 28:6b c. He pursues a forbidden way i. “Then the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice.” 28:12 d. Saul is shown God’s way i. “The LORD has done to you as he spoke by me, for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David…the Lord will give Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me.” 28:17, 19 3. The Philistines push David away. (Chapter 29) a. “As the LORD lives, you have been honest…I have found nothing wrong in you…you are as blameless in my sight as an angel of God Nevertheless…depart as soon as you have light.” 29:6-10 4. David changes his way. (Chapter 30) a. David sees the way of destruction. i. “The Amalekites had made a raid…burned it with fire and taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great.” (30:1-2) b. David turns back to God as his way. i. “But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.” ii. “David inquired of the LORD, ‘Shall I pursue after this band? Shall I overtake them?’” vs 8 iii. God answered David, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue.” vs 8 5. Mankind isn’t the way. a. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 b. “None is righteous, no, not one. No one understands; no one seeks for God.” Romans 3:10-11 c. “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 6. Jesus is the The Way. a. “So what we encounter in this Gospel is the living God, the Creator of the world, present among us humans, in our world in his Son — the infinitely loved, eternal, image and radiance of his essence — and through faith — through believing and receiving him for all that he is — we are connected to this One and through him to the Father, and so share in eternal, supernatural life, even now.” -John Piper b. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” John 14:6 c. “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 d. A Reminder of God’s Providence
A Reminder of God’s Providence 1 Samuel 25-26 1) David’s Reasonable Request (25:1-9) a) Nabal “was very rich…harsh and badly behaved.” vs 2-3 b) Abigail was “discerning and beautiful” vs 2-3 c) It’s sheep shearing season and David makes a reasonable request. i) “Let my young men find favor in your eyes” and treat them as your own servants in this celebration.” vs 4 2) Nabal’s Disrespect and David’s Response (25:10-13) a) Nabal Responds to David’s Request i) “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? Shall I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to men who come from I do not know where?” vs 10-11 b) David Responds to the Disrespect i) “Every man strap on your sword!” vs 13 3) God’s Providence through Abigail’s Intervention (25:14-35) a) As David reacts, God intervenes. Abigail gets word about David’s plan and proceeds to rush to David. i) “Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and five seahs of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs.” vs 18 b) She greets David quickly and respectfully (vs 23-31) c) She reminds David of God’s Providence d) David listens to God’s reminder and doesn’t pursue Nabal. i) Verses 32-35, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! COMPELLED TO BE GENEROUS 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 1) The Motivation for Generosity a) Generosity is the expression of our gratitude. i) “Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!” vs 15 ii) “Not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” vs 7 b) Generosity is the outpouring of God’s grace i) “God is able to make all grace abound to you.” vs 8a ii) “So that having sufficiency in all things at all times you may abound in every good work.” vs 8b c) Generosity is from the heart. i) Psalm 86:12, “I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart.” d) Generosity is NOT motivated by resources e) Generosity is NOT a predetermined amount f) Generosity comes from Christ i) 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, to that you by His poverty might become rich.” 2) The Example of Generosity a) Giving Joyfully i) verse 2, “for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.” ii) verse 4, “begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints” b) Giving Sacrificially i) verse 2, “extreme poverty” ii) verse 4, “according to their means…beyond their means, of their own accord.” c) Giving Graciously i) verse 9, “You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich…became poor, so that you…might become rich.” ii) “My grace is sufficient for you.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 iii) “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.” 2 Corinthians 12:10 iv) “But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.” 2 Corinthians 8:7

FROM COMPELLED TO SACRIFICE (Romans 15) 1. God is our source a. “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you” vs 5 2. Harmony is our Individual Goal a. “you to live in harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus” vs 5 3. His Glory is our Collective Purpose a. “together with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” vs 7 Romans 12:16-21 1. The Heart is the Start a. “Devoted” vs 10 (NASB) b. “Commit your way to the LORD” Psalm 37:5 2. The Heart Guides our Mind a. “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23 b. “Live in harmony with one another.”(ESV) “Be of the same mind one toward another.” (KJV, NASB) c. Harmony means to “set one’s mind on” d. “be considerate of the feelings of others instead of waiting for them to be considerate of your feelings” -Guzik 3. Our Mind Guides our Actions a. “carrying out the desires of the body and mind” Ephesians 2:3 b. “Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly” (ESV) “mind not high things” (KJV) c. “Never be wise in your own sight, but associate with the lowly” d. "Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.” Proverbs 3:7 4. Steps to Harmony a. Remember your salvation. i. Titus 3:1, “Remind them” i. “The continually present sense of your sins having been once for all forgiven, is the strongest stimulus to live for God “ b. Remember God’s Love for You i. “Christ died for all” 2 Corinthians 5:15 ii. “God so loved the world” John 3:16 c. Love One Another with God’s Love i. “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8 i. “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34 d. It Begins with You i. “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Romans 12:18 ii. “The Christian is a peacemaker by obligation and aim. Harmony is not always possible, since truth divides as well as unites. Paul’s double qualification (“If … so far as”) recognizes this, but the obligation to strive for peace in personal relations with others remains.” -R. C. Sproul e.
