Nehemiah 31) Nehemiah 1:1-11 This chapter looks at the state of the people of God. They are in exile, seemingly defeated. The walls are broken and the gate is burned (v3). Nehemiah is emotionally moved by the state of God’s people (v4) but instead of resigning himself to pessimism, he confesses the weaknesses of the past (v6-7) and trusts in God’s promises (v5-6, 8-11).

Pentecost - the day on which the Long-promised Holy Spirit - birthed the church and launched her on the mission of God. We are not just born again by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). We are also strongly invited into an ongoing life of being filled with the Spirit.

Paul is saying there are two ways to live: One is built on boasting about building a case for ourselves. One is build on the liberty that comes from receiving what Christ has already done for you. The gospel is about receiving a new identity/free life through the Cross of Christ.

In farming and gardening you reap what you sow it’s just reality. No one plants tomato seeds and expects corn. Paul is saying life with God works like that too. Our choices matter.

Free to be a different person Part 1

What does the FREE life of the sons/daughters of God look like? How does the gospel transform how people relate to one another? What kind of people does freedom create.

We are set free to live free. We’ve been set free not just from something, but for a whole new way of living. “For freedom Christ freed you.”

The Purpose of the Law (Galatians 3:19-25)

It is common to start the Christian life simply believing. Looking only at Jesus. Then as we go on to look within ourselves at our own human effort. Following conditions and requirements to get somewhere with God or get something from God. That drift is what Paul is countering.

The gospel is not just about a legal thing, a not guilty verdict. It’s the doorway into a Spirit filled, Spirit led, Spirit sustained, Spirit empowered life. There’s a beautiful experiential dimension.

The heart is a complex thing. We can agree with the truth, sing about the truth, even teach the truth — and still, when fear creeps in, reach for rules instead of trusting the gospel that God loves me. We often think legalism is just insecurity between us and God. Galatians 2 shows that our relationships with people reveal places where the gospel is believed but not yet fully trusted.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free

Rife within so many church cultures, false humility robs us of the confidence of 'God in us' that the world needs. Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exist because worship doesn't. John Piper

Abiding is believing, receiving from and trusting Jesus - A completely dependant posture. Thirsting for, attaching to, connected to Jesus. Jesus’ life flowing into us like a life giving sap.

Singing truth to God about God has a special/unique capacity/power to awaken/create/stir strong affections and excitement within us and in the ONE ANOTHER. We get touched and changed by truth on fire. The message/person of Jesus is invited to have the run of the house through SINGING.

Worship as expressing our thanks and love for God to give him glory. Worship has a sound? It should be fresh, sincere- It should be prophetic, we expect God to reveal himself: as we worship him as he dwells among us. It cannot be boxed in.

Out of this thriving, worshipping, Generous, Antioch church, the Holy Spirit called Barnabas and Saul to be sent out — turning a local work of God into a global mission sending church.

Acts 16:25, Paul and Silas are described as praying and singing hymns to God in prison at midnight, while the other prisoners listened. This act of worship, even in their difficult circumstances, led to a miraculous earthquake that broke their chains and opened the prison doors. Time, money, attention, gifts, work. True worship often involves sacrifice. Worship in su?ering reveals our trust and surrender. David: “I will not o?er to the Lord that which costs me nothing.”

Jesus reframes worship around intimacy, not location. Spirit = heart and authenticity ignited by Holy Spirir. Truth = aligned with who God truly is.

True worship starts with offering ourselves. Worship is a lifestyle, not a slot on a Sunday. Love for God is what sets mission into motion. Worship the fuel of obedience. To lay prostrate, bow, bow head below the heart to agree with God. Come into agreement, alignment with God, what he says, to take logic and reason and submit it to God. 24/7 worship is a week of agreeing with God. To say 'yes' unconditionally and offer ourselves. To walk with signifies an exceptionally deep and intimate relationship with God. Characterised by faith, obedience, and continuous communion.

Vision transforms ordinary choices - into meaningful ones, turns sacrifice into joy, and sustains us when the work seems hard. A family - We don’t want to be a crowd, or even a group of friends but a family. People who will lay their lives down for one another. Full of life, energy, and enthusiasm. Believers who are hope and joy filled. Transformation happening through Holy Spirit’s love, power, revelation. Overflowing the reality of Jesus’ Kingdom in our everyday life.

Life is ultimately about the attitude we have whilst we are living it. Discovering moment by moment what it looks like for Jesus to be the main thing.
