WiLD Conversation - Why 60% of Global Water Projects Break. Water4 Rewriting the Narrative on the Water Crisis: Trust, Agency, and Moving from Charity to Dignity with Matt Hangen

In this episode of WiLD Conversation, Dr. Rob McKenna Rob and Sabeth Kapahu sit down with Matt Hangen, President and CEO of Water4, an organization radically reshaping how the world tackles the global water crisis. Moving past traditional, short-lived charity models, Matt shares how Water4 operates as a nonprofit that wholly owns for-profit water businesses in Africa. By using donations as catalytic startup capital and shifting the paradigm from "beneficiaries of charity" to "valued customers," Water4 empowers local entrepreneurs to build, scale, and maintain piped-water systems. The conversation dives deep into the "chemistry of trust," the necessity of human agency, and what happens when leaders stop viewing mistakes as fatal and start viewing individuals through the lens of inherent dignity and potential. Key Takeaways 1. The Failure of the "Communal Hand Pump" (The Charity Trap) The Problem: Traditional international aid often relies on drilling a communal hand pump in a village, expecting a volunteer committee to maintain it. When it inevitably breaks due to social friction or lack of funds, another NGO simply rolls in to drill another—leaving villages full of "broken carcasses" of aid. The Reality: 30% to 60% of traditional water projects are broken. True sustainability requires shifting away from Western-dependent aid toward market-based solutions. 2. Dignity Through Pricing & Ownership Shifting the Model: Water4 charges a market rate ($1.25 per 1,000 liters) and requires a $100 deposit for home water meters. The Psychological Shift: Charging money isn't cruel; it's the ultimate form of dignity. When people pay for a service, they transition from passive recipients of charity to active heroes of their own families. Communities that struggled to raise $300 for hand pump maintenance are now delivering bags containing $10,000 in cash to get reliable, piped systems installed. 3. Unlocking Human Agency via "Time" The Real Need: The primary crisis of water isn't just health—it's time. Women and girls spend up to 70,000 hours of their lives simply hauling water. The Economic Ripple Effect: When piped water arrives at a doorstep, it unlocks hours of free time. This single shift sparks local cottage industries: grandmothers boiling water to sell rice, young men opening motorcycle-washing bays, and the creation of hair salons and construction businesses. 4. The Customer Promise: The 3 Pillars of Trust To build unbreakable trust with their market, Matt and his team rely on a simple, non-negotiable equation: Always Safe: Testing water quality weekly (far exceeding national standards) so no one ever gets sick. Always On: A strict 24-hour repair promise, requiring teams to work late into the night if systems fail. Easy to Buy: Providing three distinct ways to pay (text, agents, or digital centers), allowing users to trust the utility so deeply they even use it as an inflation hedge. 5. Leadership: When Vices Masquerade as Virtues On a personal level, Matt opened up about the internal work required to lead a high-stakes organization: Grandiosity vs. Resilience: Leaders often view strategic mistakes as fatal because of a hidden pride. Learning to say, "Of course it didn't work out flawlessly, nobody is more surprised than me that it's working," defuses toxic pressure. The False Masks: Leaders must constantly audit their motives because over-control easily masquerades as prudence, and fear easily masquerades as responsibility.   <

How to Study the Bible - Bible Study Made Simple - How to Start Creating Spiritual Rhythms in Your Life

Does the busyness of your life make it hard to actually slow down and connect with Jesus? Do your priorities feel jumbled? Does your spiritual life feel more like a checklist than a relationship? Friend, this series is for you. We're kicking off a brand new six-week summer series called Spiritual Rhythms, and I am so excited about this one — especially because I get to do it with my dear friend Rev. Rachel, who brings so much wisdom, church history, and joy into every conversation. Here's the core idea we're going to come back to every single week: right pace creates right perspective. The pace of your life is not just a productivity issue — it's a spiritual one. When we're running too fast, we lose perspective. And without perspective, we lose peace. And without peace? We lose access to the very life Jesus came to give us. We start today by going all the way back to the fourth century — to the Desert Fathers and Mothers, who looked around at a culture using the language of Christianity for political power and said, this is not what we see in the life of Jesus. And so they built something completely counter-cultural: lives deliberately shaped around the values, practices, and rhythms of Jesus himself. Sound familiar? Because honestly, the questions they were asking then are the same ones we need to be asking now. We also sit with two of the most inviting passages in all of Scripture. Jesus in Matthew 11, saying "Are you tired, worn out, burned out on religion? Come to me... learn the unforced rhythms of grace." And Jesus in John 15 — "I am the vine, you are the branches... separated from me, you can't produce a thing." These aren't just encouragements. They're an invitation to an entirely different way of living. And we close with one of the most beautiful sentences ever written — St. Augustine's prayer: "You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in You." Some of the old school stuff really is just the best. Check out my free download to walk through these practices together:https://nicoleunice.kit.com/spiritualpractices Reflection Questions: Take a minute to think about the pace of your own life. What do you notice? What does the way you spend your time say about what you care about most? Is there any aspect of your life that feels overwhelming right now? How would you describe your life with God right now? If you could change something about your schedule, what would it be? Equip & Empower Podcast with Christine Caine - Episode 401 | Go Again: Praying with Faith When You See Nothing

What do you do when you've prayed and nothing has changed? You go again. In week 5 of our summer series, Christine Caine takes us to Elijah on the summit of Carmel: face between his knees, praying in the dark, sending his servant back to the horizon seven times before a cloud the size of a man's hand finally appears. Most of us go once. Maybe twice. Maybe three times. But the fourth, fifth, sixth time — that's where most people stop. That's where faith gets tested not by what we see, but by what we don't. Elijah heard the sound of rain before a single drop fell. That gap, between what you hear in the spirit and what you can see in the natural, is what Christine Caine calls the faith zone. And it's where every one of us will be asked to live. We've committed to the direction. Now comes the test: what do you do when you keep going and it's still hard? Resilience isn't the absence of exhaustion. It's the willingness to eat the bread God puts in front of you and get up one more time. ✨ If you've ever asked questions like… ✅ I've been praying for the same thing for years and nothing has changed — should I keep going? ✅ How do I pray with faith and expectation when I'm exhausted and discouraged? ✅ What do I do when God feels silent and I can't see anything happening? ✅ How do I hold onto peace without ignoring the reality of what I'm facing? ✅ What does persistent prayer actually look like in everyday life? ✅ Is it okay to feel like giving up — and what do I do when I get there? ✅ How do I keep believing for a miracle when I've seen nothing for so long? …then this is your episode. What you'll learn: → Why going again — in prayer, in faith, in hope — is not desperation but biblical precedent, and how Elijah's seven trips to the summit reframe every season of unanswered prayer you've ever walked through. → What the faith zone is and how to stay anchored there — in the gap between what God has promised and what you can currently see — without losing hope or getting stuck in despair. → How to practically bring anxiety, discouragement, and the weight of waiting to God in prayer so you are not overwhelmed by what you cannot yet see. Transforming the Church with Dr. Derwin L Gray - It's Time To Heal with Carly Matute

What if the wounds you've carried since childhood are not the end of your story, but the very place where God begins to write something new? Pastor Derwin and Carly open this conversation with raw honesty about mental illness, trauma, and the lies that take root in our minds when pain goes unaddressed. Carly shares her journey through depression, PTSD, self-harm, and a nine-month stay at Mercy—a faith-based residential home—where a counselor gently helped her identify the lies she believed about herself and replace them with Scripture-grounded truth. Pastor Derwin weaves in the science of neuroplasticity alongside Romans 12:2 "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect" showing that healing is not a microwave moment but a crock-pot process of daily, faithful confession. Together, they remind us that knowing theology is not the same as letting it reach our souls. Your scars are not your shame—they are your testimony. Every time the world gathers around moments like the World Cup, millions of stories unfold alongside it that rarely make the same headlines. Like the fact that more than 13 MILLION people have been forcibly displaced in Sudan — families navigating loss, children growing up far from home, and communities fighting to rebuild safety and stability. This World Refugee Week, we pause for them. For their resilience. For their right to safety, dignity, and hope. Because every story deserves to be seen. #WorldRefugeeDay

Equip & Empower Podcast with Christine Caine - Episode 400 | Don't Look Back: What Lot's Wife Teaches Us About Staying Rooted in What's Ahead

There are only three words — and Jesus said them in the middle of a conversation about the end times, almost as an aside. But nothing Jesus says is random. “Remember Lot's wife.” Of the possible 170 women mentioned in the Bible, she is the only one Jesus ever told us to remember. Not Eve. Not Sarah. Not Esther. Not Deborah. Not even his own mother. One woman. Three words. And Christine Caine believes Jesus meant every one of them for you. In week 4 of our summer series, Christine opens Luke 17 and Genesis 19 to ask the question Lot's wife couldn't answer: what happens when your longing for what you're leaving behind becomes greater than your trust in what God has promised ahead? In this episode, Christine Caine unpacks the story of Lot's wife — a woman with no name, a single cameo in the Old Testament, and one of the most arresting warnings in all of scripture. Lot's wife was being led out of destruction by an angel, toward the future God had promised her family, and she looked back. Her misplaced longing led to lingering. Her lingering led to being calcified — stuck forever in a place she was only ever supposed to be passing through. Christine Caine makes the case that this is not an ancient cautionary tale. It is the central challenge of the resilient life: will you keep moving forward into what God has for you, or will you keep looking back at what He's asking you to leave behind? ✨ If you've ever asked questions like… ✅ Why can't I seem to let go of my past — even when I know God is calling me forward? ✅ Is it wrong to grieve what I've lost or left behind, or does that mean I'm looking back? ✅ How do I know the difference between healthy reflection and destructive nostalgia? ✅ I feel stuck — emotionally, spiritually, in old patterns — how do I move forward? ✅ Why does God ask us to leave things behind that feel safe, familiar, or good? ✅ What does it actually look like to fix my eyes on Jesus when the past keeps pulling at me? ✅ Can God still use me if I've already looked back — if I've already gotten stuck? …then this is your episode. What you'll learn: → Why Jesus singled out Lot's wife as the one to remember, and what her story reveals about the specific danger of misplaced longing in your own life right now. → The difference between lingering and passing through and how to identify the places, seasons, relationships, or patterns in your life where God is calling you to stop looking back and keep moving. → How the same substance Lot's wife became — salt, a preservative — is the exact substance Jesus calls you to be in the world, and why you cannot salt the earth around you if you are calcified in the past. WiLD Conversation - The Systems and the Souls: Why Mission and Humanity Cannot Be Separated in Leadership with Benj Miller

What happens when a corporate culture prioritizes operational checklists over human character? In this dynamic episode of the WiLD Conversation Podcast, Dr. Rob McKenna and Sabeth Kapahu sit down with Benj Miller, serial entrepreneur, leadership architect, and co-founder of System and Soul. Together, they unpack a foundational leadership paradox: the constant tension between human being and human doing. Moving past traditional, box-checking corporate frameworks, this conversation reveals why organizational performance and human empathy are not opposites, but oxygen for one another. Benj opens up about his own humbling entrepreneurial failures, the distinct evolutionary leap required to move from a "renegade founder" to a "renegade leader," and how to implement an intentional strategy for your organizational culture. Tune in to discover how to scale your business operations without losing your humanity. Key Takeaways The Integration Paradox: Organizations must focus heavily on both the visible (operational systems, metrics, results) and the invisible (thinking, wellness, and human fulfillment). True organizational health only happens when the system and soul are deeply integrated. Transitioning from Founder to Leader: A "renegade founder" relies on raw energy to get an idea off the ground, but often ends up trapped in an exhausting prison of their own making. Scaled growth requires maturing into a "renegade leader" who can embrace boundaries, listen to trusted advisors, and implement a roadmap. The True Markers of Leadership Effectiveness: A leader's real-world effectiveness comes down to just two attributes: being inwardly sound (self-aware, principled, and holistically healthy) and others-focused. Vulnerability Proves Safety: High-performance cultures require safety and vulnerability, but they don't happen in a linear, comfortable order. Leaders must step out and be vulnerable first to actively prove that psychological safety exists. Clarity is Kindness: Workplace culture cannot simply be delegated away to a VP of Culture. True alignment and trust are built when leaders provide functional, clear job descriptions and explicit accountability metrics rather than superficial office perks.
