What Most Christians Get Wrong About Spiritual Formation

How do we actually become more like Jesus? Pastor Adriel Sanchez argues that the key to spiritual formation is not through private spiritual habits and practices done alone, but the community and worship of the local church. A Presbyterian and Lutheran on What Most Christians Miss About Church

According to Pew Research, only 51% of self-identified Christians attend church regularly. Pastor Adriel Sanchez is joined by Caleb Keith from 1517 where they both argue that this crisis is not primarily cultural, but theological. Most Christians are simply unaware what the church actually is, what happens there, and why nothing else can replace it. Jesus proclaimed that he was the Son of God, and yet in Mark 1:25, Jesus rebuked the demons and told them not to say who he was. Why did he do that? 2. What does it mean to be saved and what does that look like? 3. Doesn't God require us to obey him rather than man? How Should We Take the Lord's Supper?

Episode 642 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com 1. I have heard that Paul's guidelines for taking communion in 1 Corinthians 11 is about the need for brothers and sisters to get-along with each other in the church. After studying the passage, it seems that it is addressing people in Corinth who took all of the communion before everyone was able to receive it. So, is Paul's warnings mainly about how to get along with our brothers and sisters or is it about not treating certain people in the church with contempt? 2. Must Christians Keep the Mosaic Law?

Episode 639 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com 1. I'm still relatively new to the faith. Recently I've been confused about the meaning of 1st John chapter 3 verse 4. There are a lot of discrepancies regarding that verse, and many are using it to say that we must uphold God's law, including the sabbath. I ended up going deep down the rabbit hole of the internet a couple weeks back and I've discovered that there are some groups claiming that our salvation is contingent upon our obedience to the Mosaic Law. I know that we aren't justified by the law, but all the conflicting information online has been making me really overwhelmed, confused and stressed. What should I do? 2. How should we respond to Messianic Judaism? 3. In Matthew 7, Jesus says, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'" This sounds like one of the scarier passages in the bible, what is your interpretation of this? 4. In Luke 22, Jesus says that one should sell their cloak and buy a sword. What does this mean? 5. In 1 Timothy 2, Paul says that God desires all to be saved, if this is true, why aren't all people saved? Must a born again Christian be extremely zealous about the things of the Lord? 3. Should pastors perform special prayers just for men in the worship service? 4. In Mark 11:24, Jesus says, "I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Beware the Charismatic Leader

Episode 631 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com 1. I am naturally interested in studying the bible and theological books. I also have a young family and while my wife is not uninterested in these things, I also know it would not be ideal for us as a family to read and discuss the types of things I am naturally drawn to, theologically speaking. I think it would be too much for them and unhelpful. What are ways that I can better help my family learn about the faith together? 2. Does Jesus serve only as the intermediary between us and the Father, or can we also pray to Jesus as well as the Father? 3. Recently I had a mini debate with some followers and disciples of a very intense charismatic leader. In our conversation they used Acts 2 as their self-defense on personal revelation or dreams. What do you think would be a good response to these interpretations? 4. Does everyone that goes to hell suffer equally? It would seem reasonable to think that someone like Hitler would suffer more than an ethical, moral person who perhaps had never been exposed to the Word or perhaps kept putting off a decision or was led into a less than real salvation experience. What book or character in the bible is most underrated or glossed over in our churches? 2. In Luke 9, Jesus sends out His apostles to proclaim the Kingdom of God, yet a few verses later after Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, Jesus commands them not to tell this to anyone. What were the apostles tasked to speak then if they were told not to say anything concerning Jesus' identity and mission? 3. Can angels marry? 4. Can a Christian lose their salvation? 5. The scripture is clear about taking the Lord's name in vain. But what about swear words? As a person in the military I'm around swearing a lot, and it struck me that what we consider bad words often have synonyms that aren't considered bad at all. In the end swear words seem an arbitrary construct of man. 6. I have struggled greatly with the temptation of lust. I have a Bible study group with close guys that I share my struggle with and I also have an accountability partner within that group yet it is still a daily struggle for me. I know that this sin is deeper than bad behavior and it's a matter of the heart. I was wondering if you guys had any advice on how to fight this temptation and pursue holiness and godliness? However, in 2 Corinthians, Paul says that we will be judged by our works. I know that we are ultimately saved by the grace of God but this is confusing to me.
