Welcome to the Corner Bible Church PodcastThis week, Adam and Jim dive deeper into Part 13 of our series about David called After God’s Own Heart going over 2 Samuel 13-21Some of the points we talk about:-This section involves the consequences of David’s sin in the form of what Absalom does. -David consistently shows that he has a blind eye towards disciplining his family. -A lot of deception happens in David’s life involving David and his sons. The deception uses their faults against them. We see this with David dealing with Absalom and Absalom’s death.-Refusing to have hard conversations will have a greater negative impact on your relationships than the subject of the conversation.-This section is basically the Game of Thrones section of the Bible.-David sends the Arc back to Jerusalem because he doesn’t know if he will survive. -Mephibosheth returns and David makes a mistake. -David’s weak spot for his family leads Joab to take Absalom’s life into his own hands. -God’s punishment sometimes comes down the line to people that seem innocent.-David finally puts an end to Saul’s legacy by retrieving the bones of Saul and Jonathan to properly lay them to rest. This shows that David did not believe himself to be part of the campaign and why he was in Jerusalem to begin with. -We do stupid things to cover up our sin. -Do not try to toe the line in the sand because it will lead us to move the line and try to justify our own sin. -Do not try to trust yourself on sexual sin. God knew we can’t be trusted with it so he warns us. -If you are dealing with any sin or temptation of sin, reach out. The journey to free us from sin is a lot easier when we have someone to walk with. This goes for both men and women. -Learn how to open up and create close friends. Welcome to the Corner Bible Church PodcastThis week, Adam and Davis dive deeper into Part 11 of our series about David called After God’s Own Heart going over 2 Samuel 8 & 9Some of the points we talk about:-Love INC is a local organization that cares about the Mephibosheths in our community. -2 Samuel 8 is the follow up for the covenant made in 2 Samuel 7-The events in 2 Samuel 8 may not be chronologically in order but being put in one part together makes more sense. -The writer reaffirms the fact that every success David has is attributed to God.-Mephibosheth’s story is entirely against societal norms of that time. David would be expected to end Saul’s line, not show it mercy. God allowed Mephibosheth’s injury so David could fulfill the covenant to Saul and Jonathan. This may be the reason for her sarcastic remarks towards him. -While we worship, don’t judge others and don’t limit your worship in fear of judgement. Of course, there are boundaries we should refrain from crossing in a public setting, but don’t hide your worship.-It’s easy to overlook verse 11 but just being in the presence of God will bless you. -Sometimes we miss the symbolism if we don’t understand the culture the Bible was written in. If you don’t take the time to understand it, you miss out on half of the message. Welcome to the Corner Bible Church PodcastThis week, Adam and Davis dive deeper into Part 7 of our series about David called After God’s Own Heart going over 1 Samuel 28 & 31Some of the points we talk about:-Scholars are divided on if the Medium of En-dor was an actual medium or just fake and conned people. -Saul tried all the approved ways to try to ask God for help but God did have Samuel talk to him with an unapproved way. -Even though David was not following God, God was still protecting him when he was living amongst the Philistines. -There are many times David is given a shortcut option, but they are not God’s plan. Each time, he chooses to stay with God’s plan. -The Amalekites are opportunistic during this conflict. And they are only there because Saul didn’t follow God’s plan. -Why did Saul ask his armor bearer kill him instead of doing it himself?-Saul has put so much trust in his own self that he can’t see that God can get him out of any situation. Meaning there is a good chance that Nabel knew exactly who David was and his family. The comment of “Who is the son of Jesse?” makes it more of an insult.-If the wilderness time drags on, don’t focus on getting out of the wilderness but what God is trying to teach you in that time. -If you ask God the reason for your trial, you might not get an answer. But if you ask God the reason for your trial, you will always get an answer.-There are many solutions to our problems. However, there are very few correct solutions. -It seems that when we are beat down by life the most, we can see God move the most. When we no longer can stand on our own accord, God’s strength in our life becomes more evident.-Abagail first tells David to focus his anger on her and then is able to explain why David shouldn’t follow through with his anger.-Sometimes God puts people in our lives to talk to us when we aren’t listening to him. He intentionally leaves out Saul’s name because God is the king that gave him the mission.-Ahimelech only speaks of one of the requirements of being holy when giving the bread to David.-David running to Gath shows that we don’t always think clearly when under stress and makes it important that we get prepared on how to handle trials before we are in the trial.-David had the opportunity to take his promise into his own hands but allowed God’s timeline to hold true where Saul insists on keeping his life as his own.-God will use other people to help confirm his plans for your life. -What were the possible consequences for David if he chose to kill Saul in the cave or just let the group pass? Welcome to the Corner Bible Church PodcastThis week, Adam and Davis dive deeper into Part 3 of our series about David called After God’s Own HeartSome of the points we talk about:-While David rose in fame, Jonathan chose to support him, Saul chose to compete with him-Saul is really bad at throwing spears.-David is warned by his wife, Michal, about Saul coming to kill him. The person Saul placed as a snare to David ended up freeing him by using the idols Saul thought would bring David down. -Saul’s messengers continue to prophesy every time they get near Samuel. Then when Saul goes himself, he starts prophesying before he even gets there. He takes off his royal garments to show he isn’t the king in God’s presence.-“Is Saul also among the prophets” is a reference to 1 Samuel 10. When Saul is becoming king, they say the same thinking he is a king and a prophet. But now, it is said in a negative light.-Saul act like many people would act when confronted with the things they put first in their life are being taken away from them.-In every step, Saul was trying to kill David but was unsuccessful. Don’t fret about not being in the right place right now. God will lead you there.-God’s plans for you have factored in your stupidity.-Make sure the feelings we have to move are from God and not our own desire to move.-Would you be more comfortable knowing God’s end step but not the process or having the process revealed one step at a time? David had to wait approximately 20 years after he was anointed to actually become king.-Don’t get stuck in fear and anxiety when following God’s orders for you. God has everything planned, he’s there for you. Welcome to the Corner Bible Church PodcastThis week, Adam and Davis dive deeper into Part 1 of our new series about David called After God’s Own HeartSome of the points we talk about:-The Holy Spirit worked differently in the Old Testament than the New Testament. It wasn’t a salvation thing but a guidance thing.-When the text says the Holy Spirit left Saul, he did not lose his salvation.-What does it mean when it says a “harmful spirit” from God was upon Saul?-God uses a servant to suggest to Saul to bring David into the court.-What is going through David’s mind when he is brought into the court after being anointed?-Davis explains the timeline for chapters 16 and 17 because it almost looks like a contradiction. -It’s important to acknowledge the darker parts of David’s life just like we should acknowledge the dark parts of our own life. An incorrect assumption of Christians is we think we are perfect. But not only should we know acknowledge we aren’t and can’t be perfect, but God uses our imperfections. Welcome to the Corner Bible Church PodcastThis week, Adam and Davis talk about Prayer and how do we effectively pray without making it feel like a chore?In this episode, we discuss:-Jesus taught the disciples how to pray in Matthew 6. -The point isn’t to pray like the Lord’s Prayer exactly but use it as a guide. If you do pray it exactly, make sure you focus on the words you are speaking, not just doing it to say you prayed for the day.-Getting used to prayer is an awkward process but it gets better the more you do it. -Find a way to pray that makes you feel comfortable and close to God.-If you don’t know how to start, find a group of believers to pray with. -Sometimes, you need to make prayer a chore until you get more comfortable with it. Over time, it will no longer feel like a chore. -Your commute is a great place to pray. -Remember prayer is a command from God and helps us draw closer to him. -The great benefit to prayer is to have the peace of God over our lives. -Give God your problems because not only can he fix them better than you can but in ways you can’t imagine. If we are correcting someone, we need to be prepared to walk with them through the process. -We need to build relationships now so the processes discussed in this series are easier to walk through.
