Cosmic Intelligence

Welcome to Cosmic Intelligence (formerly Spiritual But Not Ridiculous), a podcast that explores philosophy (Western and Vedic), consciousness, cosmology, spirituality, and technologies in the broadest sense—technologies of the sacred, of transformation, and of the mundane. As we enter this age of artificial intelligence (AI), we focus in particular on AI and its implications for humanity, questions of consciousness, AI safety and alignment, and what it means to be human in the 21st century, as well as its impact on our shared worldview. Since worldviews create worlds we will always keep one eye on our shifting worldview, hoping to encourage it along from materialism to idealism. In terms of consciousness and spirituality, we also explore spiritual practices and other ways to expand consciousness, the importance of feeling our feelings, how to cultivate compassion and empathy, find balance, and lean into fear as a practice. Sometimes we have guests. We approach all sub

Is the Future of AI In Bhutan?

I’m in Bhutan this week with a group of experienced, wise, and diverse innovators for a collaborative, week-long listening and brainstorming engagement with Bhutanese leadership to study and iterate on Bhutan’s unique approach to natural resource use, bioregional development, urban planning, sovereign AI innovation, and consciousness science.Original essay here.Bhutan offers a glimpse into a different future of technology innovation. Drawing on a week-long visit with Bhutanese leaders, the episode contrasts Silicon Valley’s techno-utopian, extractive AI paradigm with Bhutan’s emphasis on Gross National Happiness, bioregional design, and “technologies of the sacred” such as meditation and ritual. I argue that today’s large, general-purpose AI systems mostly reinforce a Eurocentric worldview. As an alternative, the episode highlights the opportunity for Bhutan to leverage sovereign, hyper-local AI models powered by renewable energy and rooted in Bhutanese/Tibetan/Sanskrit knowledge traditions. It situates these experiments within Bhutan’s real challenges—like youth emigration and alcohol dependency—and frames the country as a testbed for domain-specific, non-extractive AI systems that prioritize wisdom, contentment, and ecological reciprocity over scale and efficiency.Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness CityPope Leo calls for being ‘profoundly human’ in the age of AI (The Verge)Support the showJoin Chad's newsletter to learn about all new offerings, courses, trainings, and retreats. The Better AI Gets, the Further We Seem from AGI

Let's take a grounded look at the state of the AI industry in early 2026 and ask whether we’re actually any closer to artificial general intelligence (AGI) or superintelligence than we were a few years ago. Despite massive valuations for companies like OpenAI and bold promises from AI lab leaders, today’s systems still struggle with hallucinations, common sense, and a genuine understanding of the world. So join me as I revisit core assumptions behind current AI approaches—especially the ideas that the mind is computable and that scaling up large language models is enough to “solve” intelligence, and why many researchers are now pivoting from the “age of scaling” to an “age of research” into the nature of intelligence itself. What happens to AI company valuations if superintelligence remains out of reach for the foreseeable future?  And how should we rethink intelligence beyond language, code, and computation?BREAKING: Demis Hassabis of Google Deepmind now agrees that LLMs are a dead-end on the road to AGI Substack version of this episodeMy 2024 deep dive into the impediments to AGIWhat non-ordinary states of consciousness tell us about intelligenceIlya Sutskever on Dwarkesh The LLM memorization crisis On the Tenuous Relationship between Language and IntelligenceGary Marcus on The Real Eisman (of Big Short fame)Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs: https://www.worldlabs.ai/blogSupport the showJoin Chad's newsletter to learn about all new offerings, courses, trainings, and retreats. AI Empires and the Soul Sickness of Silicon Valley

Why is Mark Zuckerberg so obsessed with the Roman Empire? Why is Peter Thiel so obsessed with the Antichrist? Why does Sam Altman want $7 trillion dollars for an uncharted course to an unknown destination? And how can be build AI models and an AI company based on principles of kinship and reciprocity? In my ongoing exploration of what's rotten in Silicon Valley tech innovation and the ideologies driving it, last time I talked about the pandemic of what I called the Apollonian Mind Virus, a tendency throughout the modern world to favor cold, disembodied hyperrationality and cognitive intelligence over all other ways of knowing and being, over intuition, emotional intelligence, embodiment, and wisdom. This Apollonian orientation toward nature has ushered in what Sam Altman has dubbed the Intelligence Age. "Apollonian" describes the worldview and theories of intelligence behind current approaches to AI. Today, inspired by Native American thinkers like Jack D. Forbes and Robin Wall Kimmerer, as well as Karen Hao’s work, I explore an adjacent pandemic of the mind or sickness of spirit that is insatiable, extractive, and exploitative: The hungry ghost of the Windigo. I argue that current approaches to AI are largely the result of these two features of the modern, Western ethos—the interwoven helix of the Apollonian Mind and the Windigo soul sickness. I then close this post by beginning to explore whether there is a better way to innovate and evolve, collectively. Substack version here.Support the showJoin Chad's newsletter to learn about all new offerings, courses, trainings, and retreats. AI, Magical Thinking, and the Machine Metaphor with Matt Segall

In this conversation, philosopher Matt Segall and I address the role of philosophy in contemporary culture, emphasizing the need for discernment amidst ideological ferment. We critique transhumanist Silicon Valley ideologies, highlighting their left-hemisphere bias and magical thinking. We also discusses the implications of AI, arguing that while it's a valuable tool, the real danger lies in the extractive, capitalist machine driving its development.More about Matt, including his Substack, his YouTube channel, and his conversation with Michael Levin. God Human Animal Machine by Meghan O’Gieblyn https://amzn.to/3IzujNq Against the Machine, by Paul Kingsnorth https://amzn.to/4ntYp4b ‘Other,’ by R. Apollonian Intelligence: Why Do Tech Bros Have the Worst Ideas?

Peter Thiel is speaking this month in San Francisco about the antichrist. Nicole Shanahan, ex-wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin and former vice-presidential running mate of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., called the annual Burning Man festival "demonic" last week. These are the most recent developments in the rise of techno-Christianity, a reaction in part to transhumanism and Effective Altruism. Peter Thiel has also questioned the viability of democracy, which brings us to the "Dark Enlightenment" of Curtis Yarvin and Nick Land that advocates for anti-democratic CEO-kings. Although it was a fringe idea for many years, it has now gained traction with Silicon Valley billionaires like Balaji Srinivasan, who advocate for the "Exit," seasteading, and "network states." It feels like we live in the strangest times, shaped by powerful people with the worst ideas. Because technology reflects the consciousness of the people creating it, I am deeply concerned about the people creating our technologies, especially artificial intelligence. In my new podcast series, I begin trying to understand the philosophical and psychological underpinnings behind the strange ideologies coming out of Silicon Valley, ideologies very much shaping technology innovation today. Will Artificial Intelligence Make Us More or Less Wise?

In this episode I explore the complex relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and wisdom, particularly focusing on discernment. I argue that while AI can hinder discernment by perpetuating biases and misinformation, it also holds some potential for cultivating it through tools that aid meditation and self-reflection. I also emphasize the importance of truth and self-awareness in this "age of AI." Ultimately, I argue that discernment is a uniquely human quality that requires ongoing effort and vigilance, whether aided by AI or not. This one was a long-time coming so I hope you get as much out of listening as I did writing it!  More on OpenAI's recent decision to remove some of the content guardrails on ChatGPT.This episode was adapted from a guest post on Michael Spencer's AI Supremacy newsletter. Support the showJoin Chad's newsletter to learn about all new offerings, courses, trainings, and retreats. Zombies, Transhumanists, and the Worldview Crisis

Continuing our deep dive into what it means to be human in the age of AI, and inspired by the physicalist yet transcendent worldviews of the transhumanists, in this episode I start to explore the concept of worldviews, focusing first on physicalism / scientific materialism (the idea that matter / energy is fundamental), and how that particular metaphysics or worldview was based entirely on a series of assumptions that were never empirically proven. We contextualize all of it via the postmodern zombie mythology.I focus on the unexplained anomalies from quantum physics as how they undermine the physicalist worldview. I then explore the reasons that physicalism is so intractable as a worldview. All of this is just to set the table for an exploration of #idealism in my next episode (the idea that mind or consciousness is fundamental). Then we can finally turn our attention to transhumanism and human faculties. You can find a YouTube version of this episode here.Sam Altman’s “Intelligence Age” postQuantum measurement explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHDMJqJHCQghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kxmR82QMN8Quantum entanglement explained:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqmIVeheTVUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuvK-od647cJohn Vervaeke on being rational and spiritualJohn Vervaeke on ZombiesThe famous Einstein - Bergson debate of 1922My video on the hurdles to AGI Support the showJoin Chad's newsletter to learn about all new offerings, courses, trainings, and retreats. What Psychedelic States of Consciousness Tell Us about AI

The irony of the application of the word “hallucination” to LLMs making mistakes is that they are completely incapable of having psychedelic experiences. Why does that matter? In this mind-bending exploration, we dive into the fascinating intersection of artificial intelligence and expanded states of consciousness. We examine how imagination, creativity, and innovation seem to arise more frequently in altered or "holotropic" states of consciousness - such as through meditation, breathwork, dreams, dancing, psychedelics, or other experiences. I argue that current approaches to AI may never be truly inventive or creative, as they lack the ability to model the abductive reasoning and intuitive leaps that often occur in these holotropic states. To support this thesis, we explore historical examples of scientific and philosophical breakthroughs that emerged from dreams, visions, and other non-ordinary states of consciousness. In short, I am challenging the narrative that AI will soon surpass human intelligence, suggesting there may be profound mysteries of the human mind that AI cannot replicate, and offering a more sober and realistic view of the limitations facing AI research in attempting to model the wonders of human cognition and consciousness. This video is part of a series about the myths, hype, and ideologies surrounding AI.YouTube versionSupport ChadStan Grof's collected worksMy previous video on the impediments to AGIPaper using LLMs to model abductive reasoningWillis Harman's Higher CreativityEffects of conscious connected breathing on cortical brain activity, mood and state of consciousness in healthy adultsSupport the showJoin Chad's newsletter to learn about all new offerings, courses, trainings, and retreats. Impediments to Creating Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Artificial general intelligence, or superintelligence, is not right around the corner like AI companies want you to believe, and that's because intelligence is really hard. Major AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic (as well as Ilya Sutskever’s new company) have the explicit goal of creating artificial general intelligence (AGI), and claim to be very close to doing so using technology that doesn’t seem capable of getting us there. So let's talk about intelligence, both human and artificial. What is artificial intelligence? What is intelligence? Are we going to be replaced or killed by superintelligence robots? Are we on the precipice of a techno-utopia, or some kind of singularity? These are the questions I explore, to try to offer a layman’s overview of why we’re far away from AGI and superintelligence. Among other things, I highlight the limitations of current AI systems, including their lack of trustworthiness, reliance on bottom-up machine learning, and inability to provide true reasoning and common sense. I also introduce abductive inference, a rarely discussed type of reasoning. Why do smart people want us to think that they’ve solved intelligence when they are smart enough to know they haven’t? Looking Through the AI Hype into a More Human Future

Long time no talk! I just finished my masters in philosophy, cosmology and consciousness, which didn’t leave me much time for producing this podcast in the past nine months. But I’m back with a short episode that offers a preview of a thesis I am developing around the hype and mythology of artificial intelligence, and the ways that it sidelines the human.Part of my mission is to expose the cyborgian, techgnostic ideologies underlying technology innovation in Silicon Valley, and offer an alternative that is more ecological, humane, holistic, and inspired. As we philosophers like to say, worldview create worlds. So let’s be thoughtful about it.In contrast with current approaches to AI development, I want to help shape AI development so that it reflects human values, and a richer, more imaginative vision of the future, beyond just copying Scarlett Johansson's voice.I want to elevate and celebrate the human in this exciting new age of AI. We have faculties that AI cannot replicate, including imagination, intuition, emotional intelligence, and wisdom. Let’s not forget that.In the coming months, I intend to start putting out more episodes, starting with one exploring the cyborgian, techgnostic ideologies animating Silicon Valley today.I’m also working on a book and a course centered around these ideas. Hit of Happines: The Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence with Brian Dubow

This week we're sharing an episode of a podcast called Hit of Happiness, where Chad spoke to Brian Dubow about artificial intelligence and consciousness, among many other things. This may have been Chad's favorite interview so far, just because he loves talking to Brian and because they explored so many topics in such a coherent fashion. This interview is a great teaser for this three-part series Chad is working on about the myth of artificial intelligence, the nature of consciousness, transhumanism, spiritual machines, and metaphor. As our long-time listeners know, Chad likes to do these deep-dive episodes once in a while. It’s taking a while to do all the research and writing so we can finally record it. Unraveling the Mysteries of Quantum Consciousness and AI

In this episode, Chad explores a scientific theory of consciousness first put forth by Nobel Laureate Roger Penrose and Dr. Stuart Hameroff in the 1990s called quantum consciousness. This unorthodox, yet-scientific theory proposes that consciousness arises out of highly coordinated quantum processes occurring in the cells of the brain. This theory combines quantum mechanics, relativity, neuroscience, cognitive science, molecular biology, and philosophy. It’s different than prevailing theories of consciousness, which suggest that consciousness is an epiphenomenon of the firing of synapses in the neurons of the brain. Instead, Penrose’s theory suggests that subatomic particles collapse of their own accord and thereby create what Penrose calls proto-consciousness. It is an elegant way to bridge the two prevailing theories of consciousness: materialist and idealist. This theory also has major implications for artificial intelligence because it means that machine learning and neural networks may never achieve true intelligence, strong AI, superintelligence, or anything resembling artificial consciousness.Chad also explores the idea of computability, computers as universal metaphor, and the possibility that quantum computers might be a more promising avenue for research into artificial general intelligence. This episode was inspired by Chad's work in the philosophy, cosmology and consciousness program at CIIS under Kerri Welch, for a course called The Epic of the Universe. Resting Deeply In the Divine with Hilary Jackendoff

This week I talk to Hilary Jackendoff, a yoga nidra and meditation teacher and trainer, and Human Design coach. She’s also a powerful, heart-centered woman. To me, Hilary is the ideal teacher: wise yet humble, evolved yet grounded, knowledgeable yet hilarious. In this episode, we talk about Yoga Nidra, states of consciousness, how Hilary came to the spiritual path, the importance of rest, making spiritual practices accessible, ashram life, and being seen by the Divine. We barely scratched the surface of what we want to talk about so look for a part 2 coming very soon, perhaps even in the coming weeks!A quick note on the audio quality in this episode: Even though I used the same setup I always use for remote interviews, somehow my mic was too hot. How To Be Spiritual But Not Ridiculous

This week I discuss discernment: What it is, why it’s important, how it can prevent ridiculousness, why that matters, and how to increase our discernment. As part of this discussion, I explore the Yog-Vedantic theory of mind and specific practices that can help us be more discerning, including self study, kriya, classical Tantrik practices, having a teacher you can trust, spiritual community, working with sacred plants, meditation, and good old psychotherapy, including psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. The philosophy, cosmology and consciousness masters program I’m enrolled in at the California Institute of Integral Studies has the following goals:To open our consciousness, through learning and imagination, to those creative and evolutionary energies suffusing the Earth, the Universe, and the deep psyche that will enable us to participate fully in the regeneration of human communities and their enveloping life systems. To analyze the current devastation of planetary life and to strive to liberate ourselves and our communities from the underlying causes of alienation, consumerism, militarism, androcentrism, and unsustainable modes of life.To draw from the deep wells of philosophical, spiritual, and religious wisdom together with other scholarly and scientific insights in order to bring forth a profound vision of a vibrant planetary era.Other references from the episode:Joanna Macy’s Active Hope and The Spiral of the Work That ReconnectsThe full Daily Show / Jordan Klepper segment about MAGA + GematriaAn example of a discerning analysis of someone like Jordan Peterson that fails to offer a positive ethosThe podcast episode about gurus and a guru sex scandal Patanjali’s Yoga SutrasThe Bhagavad GitaSupport the showJoin Chad's newsletter to learn about all new offerings, courses, trainings, and retreats. Transforming Wellness with Kerri Kelly

This week I talked to Kerri Kelly, the founder of CTZNWELL, a movement that is democratizing wellbeing for all. A descendant of generations of firemen and first responders, Kerri has dedicated her life to kicking down doors and fighting for justice. She’s been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is known for making waves in the wellness industry by challenging norms, disrupting systems, and mobilizing people to act. A community organizer, wellness activist and author of the forthcoming book American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, Kerri is recognized across communities for her inspired work to bridge transformational practice with social justice. In this episode, we talked about the ways in which the concept of wellness is distorted and unhealthy, and how, for us to truly heal as a country and a humanity, we need to examine our intentions, motives, and prejudices relentlessly so we can truly build community and transform collectively. The work is both inner and outer; spiritual, activist, political. Human. Kerri’s been instrumental in translating the practices of wellbeing into social and political action, working in collaboration with community organizers, spiritual leaders, and policy makers to transform our systems from the inside out. Her leadership has inspired a movement that is actively organizing around issues of racial and economic justice, healthcare as a human right, civic engagement, and more.   Kerri is also a powerful facilitator, TED speaker and is the host of the podcast, CTZN. Sacred Plants & Yoga: A Love Story

In this episode, we approach plant medicine from a yogic perspective. And we explore how yoga and sacred plant medicine are complementary practices with a long-standing symbiotic tradition; how yoga can be a powerful preparatory and integrative practice when working with plants; and how yoga can also be a powerful alternative to working with plants—not everyone needs to work with plants. It’s Native American Heritage Month so I just want to acknowledge the debt we owe to the native people of this land and all sacred lands, and the importance of respecting all indigenous traditions in joining sacred plant ceremonies and working with sacred plants. I think it’s important to engage only in ceremonies that preserve traditions and have the blessing of indigenous curanderos. The world needs these sacred traditions, and they should be spread far and wide, but with a deep respect for their roots. On Becoming More Impactful With Spirituality

Inspired by friends, family, and people like Daniel Pinchbeck, who have been so critical of spirituality, I mount a full-throated defense of spirituality, first acknowledging the pitfalls and shortcomings. Spirituality for me is a holistic worldview and set of practices that make us more relevant and impactful in the world, instead of more escapist and checked-out. Authentic spirituality is becoming a spiritual scientist, making us more discerning, not more out-of-touch. Furthermore, true change cannot come about in the world without first expanding consciousness through spiritual practice. Finally, spirituality offers a nurturing cosmology that imbues our lives with deeper meaning. Daniel Pinchbeck articles mentioned in this episode: Bat Soup  Is the Pursuit of Truth Worth it? Here's my blog post about morphic fields. Holistic Yoga, Ashrams & Gurus with Meghan Kemp

My podcast guest this week is Meghan Kemp, a dedicated student and teacher of yoga, who is integrating eastern practices into western culture (which is why I was so excited to talk to her). She has been practicing yoga since she was 14 and teaching asana, meditation, breathwork and kriya for the past five years. Following a year of living, studying and teaching at an ashram in northern India, Meghan has returned to the States to share these transformational practices with all walks of life. She is also a budding Vedic Astrologer and offers astrology readings as a means to alleviate suffering and increase joy. Our conversation spanned a broad spectrum of topics, all orbiting around the broad and rich practices of yoga, from the elements that make up a holistic yoga practice, to ashram life and the role of a guru on the spiritual path, to cults, to the question of enlightenment, to Vedic astrology. In this surreal liminal space after quarantine here in New York, it was wonderful to be able to do this interview with Meghan in-person instead of online! Astrology Isn't What You Think It Is

What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? — Friedrich NietzscheWe live in what seems like the denouement of the age of reason. We feel separate and alienated in a world bereft of meaning. Astrology can be a remedy for that alienation and emptiness. To see why and how, I explore the history of science and European reason, depth psychology, and quantum physics.
