#338: Dads, Your Teen Needs This More Than Advice (Feat. James McLamb)

What do today’s teens need most from their parents? According to research involving more than 2,500 young people, the answer isn't better technology rules, stricter discipline, or more information—it's identity, connection, and purpose. In this powerful conversation, Don Manning sits down with James McLamb, founder of Generation Youth, to discuss the biggest challenges facing today's teenagers and the critical role dads play in helping their children thrive. Drawing from years of research and ministry experience, James shares how teens are asking three fundamental questions: Who am I? Where do I belong? Why am I here? Together, Don and James explore how fathers can help answer those questions by intentionally investing time in their kids, speaking life into them, and helping them discover their God-given purpose. They discuss why connection must come before correction, how family traditions help build identity, and practical ways parents can create meaningful conversations with their teens—even in today's busy world. Whether you're raising elementary-aged children or navigating the teenage years, this episode offers practical encouragement and biblical wisdom for helping your kids develop a strong sense of identity in Christ. Key Takeaways: Why identity is the foundation of a teen's confidence and faith. The three biggest struggles facing young people today. How dads can move from correcting to coaching. #337: To The Mom Who Wonders, "Am I Doing It Right?" (Feat. Mollie Torres)

Am I Doing This Right??  In this heartfelt episode, Suzanne sits down with her oldest daughter, Mollie, to wrap up the “Letters to Moms” series with an honest conversation about motherhood, grace, family culture, and the everyday moments that shape our kids. Together, they talk about the tension every mom feels—the desire to raise kids well while often wondering if you’re doing enough. Mollie shares openly about the mental gymnastics of parenting young kids: figuring out consequences, responding with wisdom in the moment, and constantly seeking God’s help as new situations arise. One of the most powerful themes throughout the episode is that parenting happens little by little. Through repeated conversations, consistent values, and small intentional moments, kids slowly begin to absorb the culture of the home. Mollie shares a story about her son explaining to someone else why he does summer schoolwork—not because he has to, but because “it’s good for me” and because “mom and dad asked me to.” That moment reminded her that even when it feels like kids aren’t listening, the seeds are taking root. The conversation also touches on anger, grief, infertility, homeschooling, sibling relationships, prayer, and the importance of hearing God’s voice correctly—not through shame or condemnation, but through love and conviction. This episode is a deep encouragement for moms in every season: you do not have to do motherhood perfectly. You simply have to keep showing up, inviting God into the process, and trusting that the small things matter more than you know. Want more encouragement like this? Together, they unpack the beauty of flexibility, the power of connection, and the eternal impact of investing daily time into your children—not just academically, but spiritually and relationally.  Suzanne brings wisdom from years of experience raising seven children through a variety of schooling choices, reminding moms that homeschooling doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. A red flag pointing to deeper needs, unmet expectations, exhaustion, or a lack of support.  Through personal stories, biblical encouragement, and practical tools, they offer hope that change is possible. From identifying triggers to asking for forgiveness, from caring for your own needs to inviting the Holy Spirit into the moment—this episode reminds moms that they are not stuck and they are not alone.  Most importantly, they remind you: you don’t have to be a perfect mom—you just have to be a growing one. #331: Marriage Finances 101: How to Communicate, Budget, and Build Unity Around Money

Listen to this before your next Credit Card Statement... In this episode of the Crazy Cool Family podcast, Don and Suzanne tackle one of the most tension-filled topics in marriage: money.  After 35 years of marriage, they openly share how finances were one of the biggest sources of misunderstanding and conflict in their relationship — not because of bad intentions, but because they came into marriage with completely different money mindsets.  Don, a CPA with a master’s in tax accounting, approached finances with structure, planning, and spreadsheets. Suzanne, a self-described free spirit, had never balanced a checkbook before marriage and associated financial control with painful childhood memories. What one saw as responsibility, the other experienced as restriction. What one saw as freedom, the other interpreted as carelessness.  The result? Decades of miscommunication, avoidance, and tension around money.  In this honest and practical conversation, they unpack:  How early money misunderstandings created distance in their marriage  Why systems like strict budgeting and cash envelopes didn’t work for their personalities  The importance of building a financial system that fits both spouses  How generosity — especially tithing — changed their posture toward money  A simple “10-10 rule” concept: 10% giving, 10% saving, live on the rest  The importance of aligning spending with shared family values  Why discussing money before it’s spent prevents conflict later  The danger of credit card debt and the power of tackling it together  How hiring a financial coach became a turning point in their communication  They also reflect on how their financial journey shaped their children — and how today their married kids are handling money in healthier, more unified ways because they learned from their parents’ mistakes.  One of the most powerful takeaways from this episode is this: The enemy will use money to create division if you let it.  But through communication, generosity, flexibility, and faith, money can shift from a source of contention to a tool for unity and blessing.  If you are in a season where finances feel tense, tight, or divisive — you are not alone. There is hope. The best is still ahead.  Podcast Resources: Click here for everything Crazy Cool Family! Give us a review! #330: Money Matters: Building Families on Wisdom (Feat. Crystal Paine)

March is about Money! Episode 330 is a fun, practical, and faith-filled conversation as Suzanne sits down with Crystal Paine (MoneySavingMom.com) to help families approach money, time, and motherhood with wisdom and peace.  Crystal—mom of six (from almost 21 to age 3), writer, speaker, podcaster, and CEO of a small team—shares how her family learned to live intentionally and stay out of debt during law school by getting creative with groceries, simplifying, and focusing on what actually works in real life. She breaks down why saving money doesn’t have to mean clipping paper coupons (hello, digital deals!) and introduces a powerful mindset shift: time is money—so any “money-saving” habit should be worth the time it takes.  You’ll hear practical, step-by-step encouragement for overwhelmed moms, including why menu planning is the best first step (before trying to overhaul a budget), how to set a realistic grocery budget, and how to make slow, steady progress without stress. Crystal also explains why learning money systems can feel like learning a foreign language—and why starting small is the key to long-term success.  The conversation goes deeper as Crystal shares her parenting journey through a hard season, how God reshaped her heart, and the story of foster care, adoption, and unexpected pregnancies that changed everything. She reminds listeners that the foundation for home management isn’t hustle—it’s starting with prayer, trusting God with the day, and letting Him multiply what we don’t have.  Crystal leaves families with one central takeaway: Emmanuel—God with us. You don’t have to white-knuckle life alone. God is present, powerful, and faithful in the details.  Podcast Resources: Click here for everything Crazy Cool Family! Give us a review! MoneySavingMom

#329: Fight Through the Gospel - The Missing Piece in Most Marriage Advice (Feat. McKenzie Reaume)

Don't save your marriage for.... later! In this episode of the Crazy Cool Family Podcast, we sit down with McKenzie (our 4th daughter) to introduce the marriage Deep Dive “Fostering Love in Your Marriage.” She has been married for 4 1/2 years and has two tiny, beautiful daughters.  Together they unpack why the word fostering matters — nurturing, cultivating, and fighting toward something good — and why so many couples drift into fighting against each other instead of fighting for their relationship. Suz and Kenz talk about how marriage can become a “back burner” once kids arrive, but why it’s worth prioritizing again because children can feel unity and disunity in the home. The conversation centers on returning to what God says about love and marriage, using Scripture as the anchor rather than relying only on the world’s tools. They also share practical rhythms couples can start using right away, including making time, practicing honesty, doing regular check-ins, and choosing to love with intentionality. #319: Saying Yes or No to Halloween

Do we Celebrate Halloween as a Family or no? How do you celebrate Halloween as a family and is it bad to do?   RE-RUN ALERT!!Halloween hasn't changed over the years and our conversation about it/beliefs on the topic remain the same. Do you need help deciding how your family celebrates Halloween? Then this podcast is for you! First off, your family needs to personally seek God and obey what he is saying for your family. There is no right or wrong. Obeying God is top priority!   Secondly, if you do decide to dress up and go house to house here are some mindsets you can empower your kids with.   Focus on Light vs. Darkness: Emphasize themes of light, drawing from verses like John 1:5 ("The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it").   Use Halloween as a time to connect with neighbors and friends. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages fellowship and building each other up, which can be reflected in community activities. Share the gospel or pray for people as you go door to door.   Encourage creative expression through costumes and decorations. This encourages creativity and imagination in them - and honestly it is just so fun to dress up.   Teach children about discernment, focusing on Philippians 4:8, which encourages thinking about things that are true, noble, and right. Discuss the difference between fun and fear and avoid anything that glorifies evil.  These are simple mindsets to help place in our kids' minds as we approach this holiday!  Podcast Resources: Click here for everything Crazy Cool Family! #316: Grace and Discipline: Can You Really Do Both?

Can you parent with grace and discipline at the same time? Absolutely. In this episode, Don and Suzanne Manning explain how to combine God’s favor (grace) with training to standards (discipline) to build self-control, connection, and freedom in your home. You’ll learn the difference between firm vs. harsh, how to respond not react, and a simple “same-side of the line” visual that moves you from power struggles to partnership. The conversation includes empathy that doesn’t excuse behavior, practical scripts for correction, and a preview of emotional regulation tools for “meltdown moments.” Anchored in Hebrews 12:6 and Galatians 5:1, this episode equips you to set clear boundaries and keep a gentle tone—so your kids actually learn.  Key takeaways:  Grace (favor) + discipline (training) lead to true freedom and self-control.  Be firm, not harsh—respectful tone makes correction stick.  Use “Help me understand…” to pair empathy with consequences.  Stand shoulder-to-shoulder with your child and point them to God’s standard.  Prioritize long-term connection over short-term compliance.  Start practicing emotional regulation during meltdowns (for you and your child).  Podcast Resources: Click here for everything Crazy Cool Family! #313: Reclaiming Motherhood

Reclaiming Motherhood: Hard ≠ Bad  Suzanne sits down with her daughters—now mothers themselves—for an honest, hope-filled conversation about reclaiming a life-giving vision of motherhood. They unpack the tension most moms feel: the days are long, the needs are endless, and perfectionism and isolation creep in. Together they reframe motherhood as Kingdom work—discipleship in real time—where “hard” can be holy, refining, and deeply meaningful.  You’ll hear practical ways to trade victim-thinking for vision: making motherhood the main thing (letting chores serve connection), joining your child’s world to build present-moment memories, creating more deposits than withdrawals with specific encouragement, and using quick repentance to repair when you blow it. The episode also tackles common pain points—asking for help, carving out breaks before burnout, battling loneliness with intentional friendships and spouse check-ins, and resetting your perspective so you see your kids as the blessing they are. Anchored in Isaiah 40:11, this conversation offers gentle leadership for moms in every season.  Takeaways:  Motherhood is discipleship—hard doesn’t mean bad.  Prioritize connection; let tasks fit under the mission of mothering.  Name weaknesses, bring them to light, and ask for help.  Combat loneliness with quick, deep check-ins and God-with-us moments.  Keep a 3:1 encouragement-to-correction rhythm.  Repent fast; repair fast. Connection beats perfection.  Isaiah 40:11: God gently leads those with young.  Try it this week: 10 minutes of undistracted play, one clear ask for help, celebrate one tiny win out loud.  Podcast Resources: Click here for everything Crazy Cool Family! #299: Using Guilt as a Signal

Struggle with guilt when parenting? This Episode is for you...(and me!) In this heartfelt episode, each daughter shared how “mom guilt” has uniquely shown up in their motherhood journey. Macy opened up about her tendency to feel like she should be punished for both the things she does and doesn’t do as a mom. Mollie described mom guilt as a constant feeling of inadequacy, and McKenzie expressed her desire to be an excellent mom, friend, and follower of Jesus—yet often feeling she falls short in every area. Suz reflected on her decades of motherhood and how guilt can stem from moments when our responses fall short—when kids get hurt, when we regret decisions, or when peace is replaced by self-doubt. The conversation turned encouraging as the women shared what helps them shift out of guilt. Mollie talked about slowing down at bedtime and bringing more Scripture into family rhythms. Macy vulnerably shared how God met her in the guilt she felt during her first trimester sickness, redeeming those hard moments. Kenzie offered a beautiful mindset shift: instead of starting each day with “100%” and losing points, what if we start at “0” and see every moment with God as a win? They ended by reflecting on 2 Corinthians 12:9—how God's power is made perfect in weakness—and encouraged listeners to see guilt not as a barrier, but as a doorway into deeper relationship with God. #298: What is the Playbook?

Guess what.... we've got something new for you! Next month, our seventh child, Cade, graduates — and with that, we officially wrap up over three decades of parenting. As we step into this next season of becoming almost-empty nesters, we’ve been reflecting on the journey that brought us here… and why Crazy Cool Family exists in the first place. In our early years, we (Don and Suzanne) felt like we had no idea how to "win" at parenting. Don reflected on how living with five women he had to learn how to lead with relationship, not just rules. Suz realized she often responded without grace — not because she didn’t want to do better, but because she didn’t know how. We both desperately wanted someone to hand us a playbook — something that told us the "right move" for each season. So we went looking. What we found is that while information is everywhere, wisdom is harder to find. That’s why Crazy Cool Family is different. We don't just give parenting tips — we give you the core concepts that make relationships strong and families thrive. We help you “learn how to play the game,” not just survive the day. in 2023, a trusted friend suggested we start sharing those core concepts daily — just little drips of encouragement and truth. That’s how Practical Parenting was born: our daily email is designed to help parents absorb these life-giving ideas over time. And now, we’re excited to introduce our next step: 🎉 The Playbook — launching May 4th! 🎉 Here’s what it is: A daily email full of encouragement, truth, and practical ideas A Weekly Huddle (every Sunday) where we go deeper on one parenting concept Optional Deep Dive PDFs you can purchase if your family needs extra help All aligned with our weekly podcast and daily practices We believe God is using this to equip parents everywhere — not just with answers, but with the insight and tools to build the family they've always dreamed of. #297: Crazy Cool Family This: Let’s Get Real!

"What is your favorite season of parenting?" In today’s episode, we’re talking about what we’ve learned through the years raising littles, middles, and bigs — and how to parent each age with purpose and grace. We're calling this theme “Crazy Cool Family This,” where we unpack key parenting concepts and make them practical for your season of life. Through it all, one thing remains true: your kids are wired to love you, and you don’t have to get everything right. That truth gives so much freedom! Don shares that his favorite stage is the middles — elementary and middle school years — because of their simple, honest view of the world and their fun personalities. Suz loves something unique about each stage. Littles bring endless snuggles and curiosity; middles ask questions that show they’re beginning to think for themselves; and Bigs — well, they give you the privilege of transitioning from parent to friend as they step into independence. For her, watching kids become who they’re meant to be is a deep joy. Each stage also has its challenges. Littles have big emotions and limited communication, which means it takes a lot of energy and grace to parent them well. Middles are growing fast, discovering their identity, and stepping into a world of activities and relationships — it’s a crucial time for fathers to speak identity over their kids. And when it comes to Bigs, the hardest part is letting go — resisting the urge to overprotect and instead allowing them to fail, grow, and build confidence through mistakes. The overall message? Enjoy every season. Parenting goes by fast, and each age brings its own beauty and struggle. If we approach it with intentionality and relationship at the center, we’ll build strong connections that last far beyond childhood. Podcast Resources: Click here for everything Crazy Cool Family! #294 In Charge Vs. In Control (Feat. Mollie Torres)

Mollie joins the podcast to talk about an insight God has been giving her about control vs. being in charge. Mollie, a mother of two boys, and the oldest Manning kid - reflects on a thought-provoking question she received from her church: "Where are you allowing the Holy Spirit to be in charge in your life?" She shares that she loves to be in charge, a trait shaped by being the oldest in the Manning Fam. Mollie is used to taking the lead and often finds comfort in knowing the vision and direction of where she is going. This strong inclination toward control can sometimes clash with the idea of surrendering to God’s will. Highlights from the podcast: Questions to ask God when it comes to control vs. being in charge of certain aspects of your life Gifts from God are to be used to His glory/purpose/vision - but how? How do we live "in charge" and aligned with God's plan for your family Releasing it to God.... and then.... ask God what is "just right" Favor and honor of leading with God without all the pressure of knowing where to go/what to do all the time (God is in control, you aren't!) Crazy Cool Challenge: Make a list of things Holy Spirit wants you to release to Him AND what He wants you to own/carry. Ask God what gifts He has given you and to wash them clean, AND to give them back to use for HIS glory!! Proverbs 3:5-6 says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. The conversation dives deep into Marcus's transformative FISH discipleship methodology, which stands for Freedom, Identity, Spirit, and Heart-Focused Community. This framework offers a practical and spiritual approach to nurturing strong, meaningful connections within families and with God. Throughout the episode, Marcus explores how parents can use the FISH methodology not only to strengthen their own relationship with God but also to guide and nurture their children’s spiritual journeys. He emphasizes that building a deep sense of identity—both in ourselves and in our children—is central to the process. The conversation unveils how parents can create a supportive environment where attachment takes priority over behavior, ensuring that children feel seen, loved, and secure. Rather than focusing solely on correcting behaviors, Marcus stresses the importance of fostering emotional and spiritual attachment as the foundation for lasting growth.
