Creatives Ignite

This video shows you my process for making different scaled versions (sizes) of the pattern I created in Photoshop. The reason we do this is if someone is wanting it to be wallpaper they might want a bigger tomato. But if they are using it on a small bag or a pocket of an apron they want the tomatoes (the original repeating pattern tile) to be smaller. I know when I am sewing the little bags I have been making, The smallest patterns I had uploaded to Spoonflower were still larger than I wanted. This past December I uploaded some smaller sizes of my favorite patterns so I can make more bags using these smaller print sizes. As I am learning Surface Pattern Design, I've some encountered some hurdles. Because of these challenges, I want to analyze many successful surface pattern designers, what attracts me to their work, and analyze their collections and patterns to see if I can create the formula I've been needing so that the hero pattern stops eluding me. In this series, I am digging into what makes their collections successful and try to reverse-engineer their collections, mini-collections, and specifically how they construct their hero patterns. This week I am analyzing designer, Mercedes Cortés' Whimsical Boho Garden Mini Collection which was an award-winner in one of Spoonflower's bi-monthly challenges. I do not personally know Mercedes but am a fan of her work and love that she has different styles. I am trying to keep these analyses under ten minutes and take you along as I look at some of my favorite surface pattern designers. This has been a long time coming. New habits, new obstacles. I tried shooting with two cameras and it was pretty much an epic fail. Not so much in the shooting, although that could have been better but mainly in the editing. I should have done a lot of things differently. SHOULD, SHOULD, SHOULD. So instead I will share what I learned. I need to ask myself what is most important: keeping to a schedule or trying something new. I guess here we saw the fail of keeping to a schedule. This means when I am trying something new I need to practice on a short something instead of content with three hours. YIKES. Ok lesson learned.

This week I have faced the hurdles. Taken time to study, try, and overcome. I've won this week, because I have completed things that I have not even attempted because I thought it would take so long to complete. I have a new philosophy I am still getting used to. Find full show notes at: https://creativesignite.com/what-i-learned-from-my-bird-project That's a lot of birds. Why geese or ducks? Why flamingos? Why this process? I introduced you to the birds back in February. But now I have had time to finish, process it in my mind, and reflect on how to use this process in the future and how to use these birds in more of my work. Mentioned in this episode: https://www.youtube.com/ @artwithem6635 I will answer a lot of the why's behind this project this week on the show. As they are assembled here it really is a LOT of birds. Last year I did a 100 faces challenge in eight days and it was great but I saw where the limitations of zooming through and not having enough depth in the project. There was also not enough limitations. Limitations help me to solve problems better, quicker, because if all the tools are at my disposal I will keep pushing pixels and trying to make it right. This challenge I was working as a professor full time so I could not do 100 in eight days and keep my students going too. I decided to focus on birds and specifically geese. Although when you type goose into Pinterest or google, I think some ducks pop up. So yes some of these are ducks but I tried to illustrate geese. I had a new process I wanted to try. I wanted to not give up even when it got hard. There were some days that I just had to have the drawing serve as the bird for the day. It just happened to coincide with Genna Blackburn's 75 Art Challenge which was making art for 75 days. She had prompts but I just needed the community. AND boy were these fellow creatives just what I was needing. I did not know anyone but made quite a few friends after this. Before Genna's challenge I was working on ostriches. They were really tall. And honestly didn't fit in my envelope easily so I abandoned ostriches and came back to them later. I decided anything with a long neck I was going to work on. There are some rogue birds in there like the seagulls without long necks. Well I am going to take you from start to finish and I hope my new document camera will be up and running. She is a professional, licensed counselor and has been integral in helping me with all kinds of things I have struggled with over the years. Most recently Amy and I have been discussing neurodiversity and how different people's brains work. This is another reason why we focus a whole month on mental health. I never want anyone to feel alone, and a lot of people feel different or awkward and this can make them feel isolated. My brain works different than others but as a kid I thought I wasn't as smart as others. Amy has a heart for helping people who are hurting and she makes a huge difference to the clients she works with and their families. It is important to ask for help, professional help. It is also important to know that everyone is different. We don't have to fit into the same boxes. For us creatives this is a superpower and helps us in our jobs. We have to embrace it.
