The Grief Behind the Illness: What Nurses See That Medicine Misses
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Death Is My Life, I sit down with Dawn Michele Jackson, a nurse who spent nearly three decades in healthcare before making a powerful shift into grief recovery work.Dawn shares how years of working with patients—especially veterans—showed her that physical illness is often deeply connected to unresolved grief, life transitions, and emotional trauma. After experiencing burnout during the COVID era, she realized her true passion was helping people heal emotionally, not just physically. We talk about the Advanced Grief Recovery Method, an evidence-based program designed to help people move beyond surviving loss and start thriving again. Dawn explains how grief can stem from many life changes—death, divorce, health crises, and major transitions—and why so many people feel stuck in their pain for years. As a hospice nurse, I see firsthand how important emotional healing is in the medical world, and this conversation explores what happens when we finally address the grief behind the symptoms.Learn more about Dawn, the Advanced Grief Recovery Method, and find other healing resources at: https://www.dawnmichelejackson.com/Support the showThank you for being here. A Navy Corpsman's Most Unforgettable Shift: Camp Pendleton Hospital Attack, ICU Realities, and What Dying Looks Like
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Death Is My Life, I sit down with Thomas, my family member, for a raw, unforgettable conversation about his clinical journey. Thomas began his career in 1977 as a Navy Corpsman at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, where he worked in the ICU and first witnessed the devastating deaths caused by alcoholism and liver failure. He shares a shocking story from a January night when a young Marine, seemingly in a psychotic break, entered the ICU, grabbed shears, and went on a violent attack that left multiple people injured and killed—an event Thomas and his team were never formally debriefed about, and as healthcare professionals do, continued caring for the assailant afterward. We also talk about what the dying process looks like clinically, the emotional compartmentalization healthcare workers learn, and how Thomas’s career evolved through med-surg, psych, rehab nursing, fun jobs such as the county fair and raves, and eventually hospital and facility inspections for Medicare compliance. We end with reflections on hospice misconceptions, finding peace in nature, and the many unexpected paths a nursing career can take.I marked this episode explicit for violence and trauma. Show Me the Evidence! Death, God, and the Science of Consciousness (with Jeff)
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I meet with the astronomer and physicist, the wonderful Jeffery Stein, to discuss his ever-lasting quest to find evidence of God. He shares stories about his non-religious upbringing within the Jewish temple, including an early memory of questioning the validity of biblical teachings directly to the rabbi. He shares a compelling account of God-like signs while in Florida that continue to perplex him today. Together, we explore why people turn to religion for comfort, the tension between faith and common sense, and how belief systems can shape near-death experiences. Jeff also opens up about his personal experience with loss and how he carries his friends with him through music and keeping the memories alive. We also take the leap into quantum physics and is consciousness created by the brain? Or does consciousness create the universe? What can quantum physics (and Einstein's “spooky action at a distance”) teach us about reality, connection, and what happens when we die?Support the showThank you for being here. Full Moon Energy- Release
Send us Fan MailNovember moon energy- release, rebirth, transformationBreathwork to unclench the nervous system- Inhale deeply. Exhale with an audible sigh. Allow the sound to carry the unwanted emotion or belief out of your body. Repeat 3 times or more if desired. Full moon herbal tea and reflection- suggested teas- chamomile, lavender, rose, peppermint. Brew your tea and sit somewhere you can see the moonlight. If that is not possible, light a candle or small lamp to represent the moon. Reflect on an emotional state or belief you are ready to let go of. When the tea is gone so is that emotion or belief. Moonlit face wash- step outside or hear a moonlit window. Scoop the moonlight with your hands. Gently “wash” your face with the light, imaging the emotion or belief being washed away. Alternatively, you can place a jar of water in the moonlight and allow it to absorb the moonlight, then physically wash your face with the charged moon water. Journal prompt- what is one thing I am done carrying? Write just once sentence, then fold the paper up and imagine the action of folding it allowing the release.Grief release- place a hand on your chest and say either generally “you are allowed to let go.” Or specifically what you are releasing “I am releasing the belief that I am not worthy of receiving.” Your body hears you.A huge thanks to 5 PINT MARY for the music!!
