  15. 1

The Road to Serfdom, Chapter 1

See the note regarding this first episode - it seemed to deserve its own entire writeup - on the substack main page.A few thoughts, though. First, expect future episodes of this podcast to feature far less talking by me, and far more discussion. We aren’t really doing a thorough study so much as we are attempting to have a conversation inspired by the reading.Second, toward the end of the podcast, I make a comment that God does not tell us how to create a Godly society (or something of that nature). I know that comment will receive some pushback. I meant that literally, in that he does not explicitly prescribe. Obviously, it can be argued that God instructs us on governance in the same way he instructs us on most everything else, but that isn’t really what I meant. Toqueville (I think, and I can’t quote it) observed that the United States could only really work in a society that is already moral. This is something we must pursue individually, not push governmentally. What our form of government does (and this is a principle upon which free-market economics is in part based) is restrain and mitigate bad, rather than create good. I would argue that one of those things is possible while the other is far less possible. But that is a discussion for another time.Lastly, feel free to comment anything you’d like, in agreement or in disagreement. Neither David nor I are married to anything we might say - much of what we do is think out loud. We both reserve the right to reassess, clarify, or change our minds. This is a public episode.
