Didn't Go Platinum

Didn't Go Platinum is the podcast that looks at the unloved and the overlooked from the world of heavy metal. We ignore the classics and instead, focus on the lesser-discussed gems. Whether it's a rarely mentioned entry from giants like Iron Maiden, or a relatively obscure British thrash band's forgotten comeback, we're interested. Where other metal podcasts look at Rust In Peace, Painkiller and Number Of The Beast, we'd rather discuss Five Serpents' Teeth and Dance Of Death. Regular host Tim Bolitho-Jones is joined by the returning Fae Scott Dench (aka the Death Metal Mum) to discuss Labyrinth by Dissentient. Bonus Episode: Going To The Movies With Evil Scarecrow - Last Action Hero

It's a special episode of the Didn't Go Platinum podcast, as Tim is joined by Dr Hell and Count Gravedigga of Evil Scarecrow for a trip to the cinema! We're revisiting the soundtrack to Last Action Hero, the cult classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movie from 1993. With a host of artists on the track list, including AC/DC, Cypress Hill, Queensryche, Alice In Chains, and Anthrax (kinda), this soundtrack is a snapshot of nineties alt-music. Hard rock, rap, and thrash metal sit side-by-side as Arnie delivers one-liners, bad guys get gunned down, and Charles Dance portrays a character so evil, he'd make Tywin Lannister wince. And along the way, we discover the origin of the word 'wanker.' There are a few tangents in this episode. You can find Evil Scarecrow online at Facebook and Instagram. You can also follow Didn't Go Platinum on Threads and Instagram at @dngplatinum, or email us at [email protected] Big thank you to Jimi from Bangers and Mosh for making the thumbnail for this episode at short notice. S3, E7: Declination of Independence by Cold As Life

Didn't Go Platinum visits the worst neighbourhoods in Detroit, as we explore Cold As Life's excellent second album, a forgotten gem of nineties hardcore. Cold As Life might be the most dangerous band to ever emerge from the American underground, whose songs of brutal slice violence and urban paranoia mask a tragic, heartbreaking career. Regular host Tim Bolitho-Jones is joined by Loudstakk mainman Ron D. Rock, and the two discuss their favourite tracks, the band's history, and the mythology of the nineties hardcore scene. And given that this is a Detroit-heavy episode, Chicago gets a minor kicking. You can explore Loudstakk and their premium MIDI grooves for metalheads by visiting their website, or checking out their Instagram page. S3, E6: Love And Other Disasters by Sonic Syndicate

Didn't Go Platinum asks the big question: can being very well-dressed and incredibly good-looking be a drawback? Regular host Tim Bolitho-Jones is joined by Kris Kielich of the Psychic Warfare podcast to discuss Love And Other Disasters, the third full-length from Swedish metallers Sonic Syndicate. They're a band that Tim once dismissed as "Hot Topic Mall Goth metal," but it turns out that they're much better than that. Join us as we revisit an irresistibly catchy album that may infuriate heavy metal traditionalists, but is actually really good. And let's find out why Sonic Syndicate didn't become megastars. You can find Kris and the Psychic Warfare podcast on Instagram and Spotify, and as part of the wider Noizze Podcast Network. Regular host Tim Bolitho-Jones is joined by Brother Paul of the Menn Metal Mayhem podcast to discuss Heaven That Dwells Within by Wormwitch. This Canadian band delivered the goods on their stunning second album, but for some reason never got the credit they deserved. S2, Episode Twenty: All Hail by Norma Jean

Didn't Go Platinum wanders back into the metalcore realm. For this episode, we're taking a deep dive into All Hail by Norma Jean. The Georgia veterans were among the first wave of metalcore bands to threaten the mainstream, but have tended to be overshadowed by their more famous peers. All Hail is their eighth full-length album, and it's a cracker. This record was suggested by the horror writer Molly Macabre, who joins regular host Tim Bolitho-Jones to discuss why All Hail might have got lost in the mix. Along the way, the duo also talk about the practicalities of fighting zombies with a nailgun and precisely what the difference is between regular and Christian metalcore. Joining him for this foray into filth is none other than Jon Rhodes of Rotherham's finest sludge maestros, Swamp Coffin. Tim is joined by Janneke De Rooy and Amie Chatterley of rising death metallers Maatkare to discuss two of their favourites. First, we head to Greece for some underappreciated Hellenic black metal; it's Sleep Of The Angels by Rotting Christ. A transitional album by the Greek veterans, this one has a mixed reputation among not just their fanbase, but the band members as well. However, it's also deeply atmospheric and even a little romantic, and well worth another listen. Then, we put on our Sunday best and head to the theatre for some power prog; it's V: The New Mythology Suite by Symphony X. A rich and beautifully composed prog power masterpiece, this is one of Symphony X's more underappreciated records and Amie especially, adores it. In the wake of the band's massive success with the 'Mother' single, Danzig 4 was a wildly uncommercial album; a pitch-black, blues-metal record that was very good, but probably not what the general public or the record label wanted from the former Misfits main man. Tim and Matt discuss the record in depth, explore both it and the titular singer's legacy, and Tim goes on a long rant about House Of 1000 Corpses. Episode Thirteen: The Razor's Edge by AC/DC

Didn't Go Platinum turns back the clock to 1990. Tim is joined by Jazmin L'Amy of the I'm Your Biggest Fan podcast to discuss The Razor's Edge by AC/DC. Enormously popular at the time, the twelfth album by the Aussie rockers has been largely forgotten in the following decades. The opening Thunderstruck is a classic song, but the rest are good too. They take a look at the album in depth and its place in the wider history of the band. They also discuss why getting a mistress would be such a faff, why shots are overrated, and Tim laments a concert he could have gone to when he was a teenager but didn't. You can email Tim at [email protected] and find us on Threads and Instagram at @dngplatinum. Episode Twelve: Seagrave by Nuclear Winter

Didn't Go Platinum is back to discuss whether the 'h' in 'Hellripper' is silent or not, and along the way, takes a deep dive into the world of Zimbabwean industrial metal. Tim is joined by Lindsay C, the presenter of The Heavy Metal Journal Youtube channel to discuss Seagrave, the fourth album by Nuclear Winter. This was one of 2023's great, overlooked albums. Nuclear Winter are a one-man project who seem to have attracted very little attention in the western world, but Seagrave rips and we're here to explain why. Tim and Lindsay discuss the evocative musical landscapes, the furious but versatile vocals, and make numerous references to war, Goths and robots. Join us for a brief glimpse at the African metal scene and discover why Seagrave is such a great record. And yes, Tim does need to get a chair that doesn't creak as much. Episode Eleven: This Godless Endeavor by Nevermore

Didn't Go Platinum returns and it's time for a dark operatic masterpiece. This Godless Endeavor is one of the best albums by Seattle's moody melancholic metallers Nevermore, but has largely disappeared from discourse since. Host Tim Bolitho-Jones is joined by Maiden Voyagers presenter Sam Khaneka to revisit this incredible record and the lads go on a big nerdy deep dive. They wind up discussing (almost) every track, explain their own personal histories with the band and consider why Nevermore's place in the history of metal is so frequently overlooked. There are also forays into intellectual topics such as why Robot Wars is overrated and whether Meshuggah are part-toaster. Episode Ten: Front Towards Enemy by HusqwarnaH

And now for something completely horrible; it's death metal time! Tim takes a deep dive into Front Towards Enemy, the debut album by Italy's unsung genre heroes HusqwarnaH. He's joined by the Death Metal Mum herself, the wonderful Fae Scott Dench to discuss the album in depth and why it may have got lost in the shuffle. Along the way, they'll also go off on tangents about Quentin Tarantino movies, why the Italian metal scene is so often overlooked, and repeatedly mispronounce the name of the band. Episode Nine: Empire Of Light by Devil Sold His Soul

Will Marshall returns to the show! He joins regular host Tim Bolitho-Jones to discuss Empire Of Light, by London-based post-hardcore band Devil Sold His Soul. Originally released in 2012, the band's third album is an enthralling slice of ambient post-hardcore and in Will's words, is "a landmark album in a genre that didn't yet exist." The lads talk about their personal experiences with the band and look at why this incredible album might have got lost in the mix. They also bring up Pixar movies, Tim professes his love for melodic death metal and 'Devil Sold His Soul' gets increasingly difficult to say as the episode goes on. Episode Eight: To The End by Orden Ogan

It's about time we did a power metal episode. Rock Out Stand Out founder Lottie Whittingham joins Tim to discuss To The End, the third full-length from Germany's Orden Ogan. It's a brilliant album, jam-packed with anthemic choruses, big hooks and impressive riffs, but it was all but ignored in the UK when it was released in 2012. Tim and Lottie do a deep dive into the record and their own personal histories with it. They discuss why they think it's so good, whether it's a rare example of anti-capitalist power metal, and why if you're cold you should just put a jumper on. The central heating isn't going on until November at the earliest. They also throw in a needless amount of Simpsons references and Tim compares himself to Josh Widdecombe. The Didn't Go Platinum Bloodstock Review, Featuring Biomechanimal

Tim is joined by Matt and Keith from industrial metallers Biomechanimal to discuss the recent Bloodstock Open Air. They talk about the band's scene-stealing performance on the New Blood stage, how their Bloodstock journey unfolded, and which other bands impressed at this year's festival. There's also a brief chat about the best places to eat when visiting Bloodstock and why staying up to take part in a Blood Rave isn't always the best idea. Episode Seven: Atonement by Killswitch Engage

Didn't Go Platinum returns for some Massachusetts metalcore, courtesy of the legendary Killswitch Engage. One of the most loved bands of the early 2000s, Killswitch Engage are rightly lauded for the groundbreaking Alive Or Just Breathing and the incredibly popular The End Of Heartache, released in 2002 and 2004 respectively. But their 2019 release Atonement does not get the same level of love. Widely celebrated upon its release, it seems to have been all but forgotten since. Host Tim Bolitho-Jones is joined Distorted Sound's Tasha Brown to ask the burning questions; is this album an overlooked heavy metal classic? Is it the best thing they've done since Jesse Leach returned? And how exactly do you pronounce D'Antonio? We are very serious people. If you want to listen to Atonement, you can find it here: https://open.spotify.com/album/6kkUp557e0o5k0dRBfohJZ?si=q29mcNGlQtm7XhD_eCzNpg Email us at [email protected], find us on Instagram @dngplatinum and visit our main website at distortedsoundmag.com

Bonus Episode: The Didn't Go Platinum Bloodstock Preview

It's a bonus mini-episode! Having just discovered he's going to Bloodstock, Tim lists some of the lesser-known bands on the line-up and why you should check them out. This includes no less than two bearded stoner bands to watch while under the influence of cider, a thrash-hardcore hybrid band with a love of Grand Theft Auto, and Exist Immortal, whose name we're including in the description for SEO purposes. Didn't Go Platinum is produced in association with Distorted Sound magazine. Episode Six: Pitch Black Progress by Scar Symmetry

Chris Earl returns for his second podcast appearance and this time, he's talking about Pitch Black Progress, the second album by Swedish melodeath underdogs Scar Symmetry. He joins regular host Tim Bolitho-Jones to discuss the album's place in the pantheon of metal, why it may have got lost in the mid-noughties melodeath mix, and why it's an overlooked gem that deserves another look. The lads also wind up comparing the band to Kirk Van Houten and Tim has an accidental Partridge moment. Episode Five: Noose Almighty by Swamp Coffin

Tim sits down with Distorted Sound's doom aficionado Tom Lewis to discuss Swamp Coffin, the very best New Orleans sludge metal to come from...uh...Rotherham. The lads take a deep dive into the band's debut album Noose Almighty and why they think it's an overlooked classic. Along the way, they also talk about the best places to buy a steak in Disneyland, why Warhammer lore is metal, and how the lines between stoner and hardcore are starting to blur. They also have a good old-fashioned whinge about how nostalgia sucks and Tim says the word "anyway" too many times.

  46. 3

Episode Four: With Oden On Our Side by Amon Amarth

Tim Bolitho-Jones and Distorted Sound's resident history buff Tom Fordham take a deep dive into With Oden On Our Side by Amon Amarth. The Swedes' sixth full-length is often overlooked in favour of the follow-up, the landmark Twilight Of The Thunder God, but deserves reappraisal as a classic in its own right. The lads have a painfully nerdy conversation about their personal histories with this album and discuss their favourite tracks, while taking numerous detours into Viking mythology. Also, Tim's son makes an unexpected cameo which could probably have been edited out but wasn't.

  47. 2

Episode Three: The Opposite From Within by Caliban

Tim Bolitho-Jones has a chat with Distorted Sound's resident metalcore scholar Chris Earl about a forgotten gem; The Opposite From Within by Caliban. Originally released in 2004, this album did reasonably well at the time, but since then has rarely been mentioned by the wider metal world. Caliban have had an incredible career in mainland Europe, but the English-speaking metal community tends to ignore them in favour of bands like Killswitch Engage. We'll examine the reasons why, discuss why this record deserves a re-appraisal and what legacy it left. Plus, there's a brief discussion on the worst metal cover songs and Tim forgets who The Doors are.

Episode Two: Dance Of Death by Iron Maiden

Tim Bolitho-Jones sits down with God's Favourite Metalhead and Distorted Sound's own Elliott Leaver to discuss an oft-overlooked gem; Dance Of Death by Iron Maiden. Usually ignored in favour of classics like Number Of The Beast, Powerslave and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, Dance Of Death is nonetheless an incredible album by one of the most famous metal bands in the world. Why? Here's why. Also, Elliott has a few things to say about Bruce Dickinson's monkey dance. https://distortedsoundmag.com/

Episode One: Five Serpents Teeth by Evile

Didn't Go Platinum is the new podcast from Distorted Sound magazine. We take a deep dive into the world of heavy music to discuss albums that we think are unfairly overlooked. In this pilot episode, host Tim Bolitho-Jones sits down with journalist Will Marshall to discuss Five Serpents' Teeth, the third album by Yorkshire thrash veterans Evile. They look at (almost) every track, discuss the history of the band, and ask the all-important question: is this an overlooked classic, or is it just a really good thrash album that deserves a revisit? This episode was recorded in Autumn 2023 but was delayed, so some of the conversation towards the beginning is slightly out of date.

ABOUT THIS SHOW

Didn't Go Platinum is the podcast that looks at the unloved and the overlooked from the world of heavy metal. We ignore the classics and instead, focus on the lesser-discussed gems. Whether it's a rarely mentioned entry from giants like Iron Maiden, or a relatively obscure British thrash band's forgotten comeback, we're interested. Where other metal podcasts look at Rust In Peace, Painkiller and Number Of The Beast, we'd rather discuss Five Serpents' Teeth and Dance Of Death.
