Disruptur

by Derek Laliberte

"If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis." It seems as if everyone has a podcast now, and if you don't have one, well then, you're not very cool. Disruptur is the name of my company so, obviously, it's the name of my podcast, but this isn't a podcast. It's a story about life wrapped into a lesson that hopefully, people can relate to as they go through their own experiences. It's very real, it's raw, it's authentic, and it's 100% my truth. Thanks for talking a moment to listen in. Best, Derek [email protected]

Episodes

  1. Dumb & Dumber was a Tragedy

I was recently asked the question, what does Recovery mean to me? This is how I would answer that question now that I've been through Recovery. Pure Comedy

  2. Can someone turn off the teleprompter? It's distracting you from my originality

When I was an eleven-year-old I was invited to a “Kumite” and I respectfully declined. Oh, you’ve never heard of a “Kumite?” Well, that leads me to believe one of three things have to be true about you; You've never answered a question by simply stating “Ok USA," You’re not a male in your...

  3. Quitting the booze was the easy part...

I just got off the phone with Mark (the pastor who married us) and had to lock the door to my office and turn on music so no one would hear me sobbing. Amazingly, I can have a conversation with someone who can hear the awfulness of what I am telling them about myself, only for them to pray for me...

  4. Stop acting like you don't care about what people think because you do.

"I don't care what other people think." Those are the words we tell ourselves when we "DO" care about what other people think about us. I know it's excellent advice and essential self-talk to remind ourselves that there is only one judge in the end, but the truth is that when someone criticizes…

  5. You're Good for Nothing

Many of us would like to believe that we should be compensated for being great, but in reality, if you want to be great, you need to start by being good for nothing.

  6. With all my heart, No.

Last week as I hugged my son before bed, he said to me, "Dad, will you be home tomorrow? What about the next day? And the next day? And the next day? And the day after that? And the next? And Saturday?" As his father, I felt the need to explain myself. "No, son, I won't be home all of those…

  7. Are you a Dying Man?

Two years ago, I drove to Nashville for one reason. That reason was a Father John Misty concert. That's it, just one guy who writes music that soothes my soul. This past spring, FJM released a new album with a track on it called "Ballad of the Dying Man." Its lyrics are synonymous with my…

  8. Be a Bad Listener

“Derek, are you a pussy? Sometimes I wonder if you’re just too afraid to touch the puck.” Those were the words my high school hockey coach said to me the moment I decided to give up on myself and quit on my dreams. I was fifteen years old, five foot nothing, and I couldn’t have weighed in at more...

  9. Do you even know what you're chasing?

The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why. - Mark Twain On November 6th, 2009, I held my son in my arms, and I called my brother on the phone to tell him I had a son. I had my back turned to the rest of the room as I held him in my arms and...

  10. Sales Consultants are like this and like that and like this an uh...

One, two, three, and to the four… In 1999 I sold a stack of CDs and a pair of Lucky Brand Jeans to some guy I went to college with to impress a girl. The net was just around fifty bucks. Of which, I spent five on a low-quality car wash, ten dollars on some grocery store daisies and candy hearts,...

  11. Crossing the Line: Not Your Mom's Sales Advice

Not your mom's at all, actually, it was a friend of mine from college. He's an all-time homie who is chalked full of one-liners. One-liners that would always shtick. In college, we laughed at them because he would insert them at the most opportune moments as if it was scripted. I'm guessing the...

  12. Thanks for Sharing

When I first started my recovery journey a good friend told me how liberating it would feel to share my problems with someone. I didn't see how that would ever be remotely possible. "I'm not telling anyone about this, it will ruin me!" Then all of a sudden I saw someone share their story at a…

  13. "New Skool" Sales Concepts for the "Old School"

Picture a twelve-year-old kid with a "Just Do It" shirt, tucked into a pair of mismatching Umbro shorts, coming at you on a Redline 360 (BMX) in the early '90s. If you need a touch of more detail picture that same kid with the cleanest pair of Deion's (Nike's), and a Sony Walkman tucked into his...

  14. Hope is a Plan

Months after my grandfather was diagnosed with terminal cancer I got the call from my grandma in Minnesota telling me to get home as soon as possible. My grandmother told me that grandpa wouldn't make it through the night. Back then if you knew someone who worked for the airlines you could fly...

  15. What are you going to do about it?

I drank six beers and took six shots, and thought I should drive us home. I thought wrong. I got pulled over, as you could probably guess. Cops tend to freak out when you turn the wrong way down a one-way street. To my credit, I noticed instantly and made an illegal u-turn. "Excuse me, Sir, have...

  16. The Box Sucks

Once upon a time, I was asked if I led a team of amateur marketers. It royally pissed me off, but now I know that it doesn't matter. If we were or if we weren't, the answer would have always been the same, "sure." Let me tell you a story. Last week my son, who just started playing QB, was told…

  17. Defending the LinkedIn Selfie with a Social Funnel

"So I wanna go someplace where we know somebody who can plug us into the social pipeline.” ~Lloyd Christmas In my prime I was making 5-10 thousand cold calls a year. I would talk to 10 people a week, only setting 1-2 meetings. My lack of success didn't have anything to do with a lack of skill but...

  18. I Made My First Million 1,095 Days Ago

There’s a story about three recent college graduates about to travel on a mission trip. These new graduates are looked directly into the eyes and told that they are in fact millionaires. Regardless of all the debt, they have accumulated over the past four + years of college, they are very well…

  19. Some things don't matter. I'm fine with that.

I used to think that learning new things about yourself was self-discovery and part of a growth mindset. Now I realize that some things just don't matter, and I'm fine with that. I was working on two projects simultaneously, each of them was attached to a deadline, and they were easily 100+ hours...

  20. "Did I catch you at a bad time?" The Fallacy About Cold Calls

Just as my tenure on the Mastodon Soccer Team was gaining steam I took a random phone call from some guy attempting to pitch me on an idea to be the face for the new Miller Lite advert campaign. Oh, heck yeah! I was nearly 21 and apparently, I had been spotted casually sipping on some at a local...

  21. N-O-T-O-R-I-O-U-S Prospecting

In 1997 The Notorious B.I.G. was shot and killed on my birthday. I was devastated. I love his music. That point in the story has nothing to do with this article though, but Biggie's lyrics are a great segue into a valuable lesson on making connections. On any platform, for that matter. If you…

  22. The Power of Forgiving Yourself

The most challenging task any of us ever face is something most of us don't have any experience with. I'm talking about Forgiveness but not the kind you extend to someone out of mercy. I'm talking about forgiving yourself. We are all destined at some point in our life to make mistakes. It's...

  23. Two Updates LinkedIn needs NOW!

I'll skip directly to the chase on this one and save the typical metaphor for the end of this article. After years of loyalty to this platform and appreciation for its possibilities, I'm stunned at LinkedIn's failure to capitalize or instead seek what I see (through personal experience) are the...

  24. A Vanity Fair: Likes and views don't pay the bills, but man do they look good.

November 8th, 2016: Election Day I was twenty rows back patiently, waiting for Gary Vaynerchuk's keynote. I was sitting next to three colleagues, two of whom were in marketing and the other on our sales team. It was HubSpot's annual Inbound Conference, and I wasn't there to learn anything about...

  25. How can I love you more? For my wife, not enough.

Ami and I were curled up on our couch Monday night with our two kids, Avery & Chase, watching old home videos on my laptop. I could barely hold back the tears as I listened to our kids laugh at the younger versions of themselves talking about losing their teeth and singing happy birthday to...

  26. Self-Taught: Go After What You Want

I'm not sure when it was, but I was reading an article by someone advising others to watch out for the so-called experts who are"self-taught" because they haven't had any formal training. I had to laugh because I'm 100% self-taught. Thanks, Roger. This one is for you.

  27. The Great Resignation? More like The Great Burnout.

Six weeks ago, I saw a picture of a great friend sitting around a bonfire alone and on his laptop. It was the end of summer, the sun was setting over the lake, and the view was majestic but, it was a Saturday night. Knowing how much I care for this person, I put my head in my hands and began to...

  28. Go Ahead and Elon that Meeting

When I was in high school, I had a girlfriend who wanted to talk on the phone for hours, and I despised it! I figured if we couldn't hang out that day, we could catch up in person tomorrow but, I was soft. "Sure, let's talk on the phone for two hours. What else do I have to do besides roam the...

  29. Social Content Made Eazy

If you find yourself wondering, "what should I post on LinkedIn every day? You're not alone. Thousands of professionals are facing the content issue on a daily. It's an exciting topic because social relevance's significance and pressure are more prevalent than ever before. I happen to believe…
