Menin Inhibitors to Treat Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
Get up to date on menin inhibitors, an emerging class of targeted therapies for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Menin is a key component of the KMT2A (lysine methyltransferase 2A, formerly MLL1) complex, which plays a critical role in gene regulation, development, and cell cycle control. Small-molecule menin inhibitors have shown particular promise in KMT2A-rearranged (KMT2Ar) and NPM1-mutated AML, with two agents already receiving FDA breakthrough therapy designation. In this episode, Dr Scott Armstrong and Prof Marc Raaijmakers explore the scientific rationale behind menin inhibition, identify which AML patient populations are most likely to benefit, and review the current clinical evidence supporting their use in defined molecular subtypes.Guests: Dr Scott Armstrong Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Prof Marc Raaijmakers Erasmus Medical CenterHost: Isabel Olivera Martinez, PhDLearn MoreWhat did you think of this podcast? Episode first published on November 1, 2024.]Join us for an engaging episode with Dr. Stephen Hibbs from Queen Mary University of London as he discusses the environmental impacts of hematology. Alongside our host Dr. Sarah de Vlieger, they explore how climate change is already affecting hematology, emphasizing that these effects are being felt now rather than in the future. The conversation highlights how climate change alters aspects of hematology practice, such as the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections due to evolving disease vectors. Dr. Hibbs describes also the surprising link between extreme heat during pregnancy and an increased risk of children developing ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). He further discusses practice-changing initiatives, like using sevoflurane instead of desflurane as an anesthetic to reduce environmental impact, and explains his work on improving the logistics of blood transfusions to lessen their ecological footprint. Finally, Dr. Hibbs encourages hematologists to focus on actionable steps to minimize their environmental impact, advocating for practical changes in clinical practices and increased awareness of the healthcare sector's contribution to global emissions. Targeting the Immune System in MDS (featuring Prof Dominik Wolf)
Join us for a conversation between prof. Kirsten Gronbaek and her guest prof. Dominik Wolf, as they discuss targeting the immune system in MDS management. In light of accumulating evidence that inflammatory signals play a role throughout disease evolution in MDS patients, prof. He uses the example of targeting NLRP3/IL-1 axis in low-risk MDS to highlight the need of understanding the underlying cellular biology to translate that knowledge into clinical approaches. He also discusses the concept of possibly targeting both non-clonal and clonal compartments for better patient outcomes in the future. Tune in, to hear about other future directions in treatment of MDS, such as recent developments in CAR T-cell approaches and about the central role that allo-transplantation is likely to keep in the treatment of high-risk MDS. You will also hear about the potential link between inflammation and fatigue, which is clinically highly relevant, but as yet an unsolved issue in MDS. Host: prof. Kirsten GronbaekGuest: prof. Hematology Portraits: Prof Kostas Stamatopoulos
Join us for an interview with Prof Kostas Stamatopoulos, as he shares his personal journey as both a medical doctor and a researcher in hematology and understand how these two activities have always been profoundly linked in his drive to deliver impactful solutions for patients - even though years may pass between a discovery and a change for patients in clinical practice. Prof Stamatopoulos describes here his work into stereotypy of B-cell receptor (BCR) immunoglobulin and how this phenomenon explains the existence of the same or highly similar subsets of BCR clones in unrelated patients with CLL. Our guest explains further how this knowledge is leading to the classification of CLL patients into subsets with specific pathologies and might help personalize the treatment. Next to translational research, Prof Stamatopoulos is focusing on patient empowerment. In this podcast, he will explain how he strives to create a more participatory healthcare model, and how he aims to transform education and training for young clinicians and researchers.
