Eko : Resonance Series

This month’s episode begins with the idea of rechanneling energy. After a period of release — of allowing things to dissipate, drift and lose their original shape — another movement begins: a gathering. Not quite a return to control, but a gradual recognition of direction. Energy that was once scattered across an open field begins to find pathways, to collect around certain points, to move with a different sense of purpose.In musical terms, this can be felt as a shift towards structure. Sounds begin to organise themselves around rhythms, repetitions and recurring forms. Patterns emerge from what had previously seemed diffuse. A pulse appears, sometimes tentatively, sometimes with the inevitability of something that had been present all along. Structure, in this sense, is not a restriction placed upon sound, but a way of giving movement somewhere to go.Structure is often imagined as the opposite of freedom, yet it can also create the conditions for attention. A rhythm gives us something to move with, while a sequence of sounds creates expectation — and it is within expectation that deviation becomes audible. The smallest interruption, delay or displacement can suddenly take on significance. A sound arriving fractionally too early or too late can alter the dimensions of the space around it.Gradually, the diffuse becomes focused. The open field becomes a path. Intensity is no longer simply released into space but redirected, gathered and transformed. Something that once seemed without boundaries begins to acquire contours.This month’s selection moves through that threshold: between expansion and concentration, drift and direction, dissolution and form. This month’s episode was put together around the idea of decompression: the moment when pressure begins to lift, when accumulated energy and emotion are allowed to disperse without necessarily being resolved. Music becomes a space for this release — not through softness or calm alone, but through movement between extremes, through the friction and strange intimacy that can occur when one atmosphere is placed against another.There are suspended textures here, distant signals, fragments of ambience and sound that seem less like compositions than places you have somehow returned to. They hover at the edge of recognition, familiar without quite revealing why. Gradually, these spaces are interrupted by heavier, machine-like rhythms and low-end pressure — beats that seem to belong to some distant industrial system, operating somewhere beyond the immediate field of listening. Bass becomes physical, almost architectural. It gives shape and weight to what was previously diffuse, while the atmospheric material remains in the air around it, like a trace, an afterimage, or the memory of another room.There is a particular interest in contrast throughout the episode, and in the transformations that occur when sounds are placed beside things that initially seem incompatible. A delicate atmosphere can make a brutal rhythm appear strangely vulnerable. A heavy bass track can cast an ambient passage in a different light, revealing something darker or more unsettled within it. Sound begins to behave like an object viewed from different angles. Its meaning shifts according to what surrounds it, what came before, what follows, and the spaces that open up between one sound and the next.Perhaps this is where decompression takes place — not in the absence of intensity, but in its redistribution. Energy is allowed to circulate, to loosen, to lose its original form. A rhythm can become an atmosphere; an atmosphere can acquire weight. Repetition becomes hypnosis. Distance becomes intimacy. What first appears heavy can begin to feel strangely weightless.The episode moves through these shifts without insisting on a destination. Instead, it lingers in the unstable territory between states: between pressure and release, machinery and environment, presence and disappearance. The sounds seem to leave something behind as they pass — a residue in the imagination, perhaps, or simply the sensation of having occupied a different acoustic space for a while. These sessions function as both archive and exploration.This month’s mix was approached like a dream sequence: a drifting procession of memories, thoughts, atmospheres and environments that emerge, disintegrate and recombine in a state of perpetual transition. Rather than moving from one fixed destination to another, the mix inhabits those fleeting intervals where consciousness slips between images, where fragments of experience surface momentarily before receding again into the background.There is a peculiar way in which places, people and emotions continue to exist within us long after they have passed. They linger as traces, impressions and sensations, often dormant until something unexpectedly calls them back into presence. A sound, a texture, a voice, a distant melody can suddenly open a passage to another time. For a brief moment, the boundaries between past and present become porous. We find ourselves inhabiting multiple timeframes at once, suspended between where we are and where we have been.Rather than presenting a linear narrative, the tracks are arranged as a series of interconnected microcosms: transient worlds that appear and disappear as if caught in peripheral vision. Each piece leaves behind a residue that colours what follows, creating chains of association that feel less like conscious decisions and more like the unpredictable logic of memory itself. The transitions are intended to mirror the way recollection functions — discontinuous, fragmented, yet somehow emotionally coherent.Music has always possessed this quality for me. It acts as both archive and portal, carrying emotional information that often escapes language. Certain sounds can instantly return me to forgotten rooms, long journeys, encounters with people no longer present, or specific states of feeling that seemed lost to time. The experience is rarely one of clear recollection; instead it resembles a sensory atmosphere, a feeling-tone that surrounds the memory and allows it to briefly materialise again.In that sense, listening becomes a form of wandering through invisible architectures of memory. The mix attempts to follow these pathways, allowing moods and textures to guide its progression rather than fixed structures or expectations. Moments of clarity give way to ambiguity, environments blur into one another, and familiar forms dissolve into something less certain. These sessions function as both archive and exploration.This month’s mix was assembled around the idea of layering as a spatial practice: not the accumulation of sound for its own sake, but the careful placement of elements so that absence becomes as active as presence. Tracks overlap, fall apart, and re-enter from unexpected angles, creating pockets of tension that emerge less from impact than from the distances held between things.What interests me most is the way multiple layers can generate the illusion of depth. A percussion loop sitting just behind a sustained tone, a fragment of melody appearing through a wash of texture, a vocal trace lingering at the edge of intelligibility — each element reshapes the perceived dimensions of the others. Space is not something that exists prior to the mix; it is produced through these relationships, through the constant negotiation between foreground and background, clarity and obstruction.There is a delicate tension in maintaining these simultaneous states. Layers function as both structure and interference, supporting one another while obscuring one another. The ear continuously recalibrates, searching for hierarchy, then abandoning it. What first appears crowded gradually unfolds into a landscape of separations and intervals. Sounds cease to behave as isolated objects and begin to act more like atmospheres, extending beyond their apparent boundaries.Fragments of ambient drift stretch across rhythmic frameworks, low-end pressure carving out cavities beneath brittle percussion, distant harmonic material surfacing momentarily before receding into the mix. Patterns emerge through overlap rather than declaration. These sessions function as both archive and exploration.This month’s mix was assembled around the idea of density: frequencies brushing against one another until they begin to blur, distort, and generate new forms in the friction. Sounds are layered not for harmony alone, but for tension — moments where elements seem almost incompatible, yet through repetition and proximity start to imply their own strange coherence. A kind of sonic architecture emerges from collision.I’ve always been fascinated by this possibility in DJing: the act of holding multiple temporalities open at once. Two or three tracks folding into each other until they no longer feel discrete, then introducing a fourth element not to intensify the mix further, but to subtract from it — to hollow out space again and keep everything suspended in movement. The mix becomes less a sequence of tracks than a shifting ecology of textures, residues, and ghosts.There’s something illusory in that process: how the ear retrospectively stitches together incompatibilities into continuity. Music has this ability to make contradictions feel inevitable after the fact. A rhythmic dislocation becomes groove; interference becomes atmosphere. These sessions function as both archive and exploration.Resonance is an opportunity for me to experiment with contrasting sounds and discover how they can fit together in unexpected ways. Each month feels like assembling a new jigsaw puzzle—piecing together abstract elements and observing how they reflect and interact with one another.In this context, DJing is approached not as the application of effects, but as a process of immanent construction. The mix becomes a space in which frequencies collide, interfere, and bleed into one another. What matters is not the track as a discrete unit, but the intensities generated in the overlaps, the friction, the artefacts, the liminal zones between sounds.This tendency perhaps derives from vinyl culture, where mixing was bound to a linear temporality, a sequencing that imposed a certain discipline on both selection and transition. Digital DJing, by contrast, introduces a fundamentally non-linear logic: loops, cue points, fragmentation. Tracks are no longer played so much as disassembled and recombined.The result can be a paradox: an expansion of possibility that coincides with a contraction of focus. Resonance operates as a recursive machine: concerned with feedback and new paths of experimentation. The machine does not liberate us from human listening; it focuses and amplifies it.Time in this space does not merely pass — it smears, stretches, folds, and fractures. Loops unravel, reweave themselves, and fold back on memory. Glitches are not errors but sigils, fractures in perception that reveal the machinery underneath.Past futures echo faintly in the background, encoded in texture rather than statement; we do not escape the present — we hear it thinking. A space where fractured futures, residual pasts and emergent machines briefly cohere.The music traces the contours of the sounds I’m drawn to: abstract rhythms, electroacoustic atmospheres, and unstable beats that hover between propulsion and collapse. There is a constant push and pull at work — density against absence, precision against erosion—producing sharp contrasts in time, space, perception and affect. Influenced by the idea that sound can excite, haunt, unsettle and reconfigure how we experience the present, these mixes lean into dissonance, drift and the strange emotional charge carried by synthetic and atmospheric texture.The Resonance mixes are less about genre fidelity; they foreground sound as environment, as pressure, as residue—where echoes of rave futurism, dub decay and digital excess bleed into one another. In this sense, the music resists closure: it loops, stutters, mutates, and occasionally slips out of focus, revealing moments of fragile beauty and latent unease.I’ll be releasing new music as Eko later in the year, on one of my favourite experimental labels.
