Directing "Midsummer" Part Two: Fairies & Mechanicals | Electric Secrets
Oberon, Titania & Puck Unleashed: Fairy Kingdom Chaos! Welcome back to Rustic Shakespeare on the Electric Secrets Variety Podcast, where veteran actor-director Scott Leosn Smith steps off the stage and straight into the rehearsal room to share the craft, the comedy, and the pure theatrical joy of bringing the Bard's wildest dreams to life. In this larger-than-life continuation of his Midsummer reminiscence, Scott reveals how he turned Shakespeare's fairy realm into something unique. What you'll hear in this episode: How we empowered Titania as the true powerhouse of the fairy court, her zealous, obnoxious fairy entourage guarding a simple baby carriage as the magical changeling child, flipping the power dynamic with Oberon and turning "fairies skip hence" into a hilarious, full-on fairy beat-down that dodges any outdated baggage. The mischievous heart of the play: Puck as the real protagonist fixing Oberon's love-potion blunder, the fairy-human world collisions we wanted to explore, and the riotous Mechanicals scene where Puck turns Bottom's head into a donkey (complete with a practical headdress that let the laughs, and the language, shine in our big outdoor production). The glorious Act 5 payoff: a play-within-a-play staged side-by-side with the royals, a dreamy sleeping tableau for the lovers, Puck's spell that finally gives stubborn old Egeus his happy ending, and a cathartic curtain call that had the audience on its feet, because accessibility, joy, and seeing the obvious comedy gold are the real secrets to making Shakespeare feel fresh and fully-realized. Whether you're an actor, director, designer, or simply a lover of the Bard, this episode crackles with the same passionate craft that makes every MonsterVox production feel electric. Scott's reflections are packed with practical directorial wisdom, playful world-building ideas, and that unmistakable larger-than-life spirit that turns stories into unforgettable experiences. Walleyes, Salt Trucks, & Shotgun Weddings | The Albatross Cafe' is Watching | Electric Secrets
Step into the gloriously unhinged world of The Albatross Cafe! The rare, riotous segment that drops like a surprise comedy bomb every eight years or so (subscribe and thank your lucky stars when it finally hits your feed!). Hosted by the ever-watchful Marty Merman from the fictional greasy spoon in Schleboygan, New Jersey, this episode is a wild ride through absurd people-watching, influencer roasting, and firearm-fueled matrimonial mayhem. It's chaotic, it's weird, it's hilariously inappropriate. Here's what's on the menu this time around: People Watching Gone Motel Spy Mode: Marty spies through the classic walleye peephole at a sketchy motel, catching housekeeping weirdos hunting Pokémon, debating anime, and possibly running the world's slowest drug deal (or just really bad at their job). Bonus: a rock-hard muffin that could skip across a lake like a pro. Influensah with Esther Merman: Marty's mom dives into the bizarre world of winter salt-truck influencers, reviewing a 48-minute epic of spreading salt, swapping trailers, and early-morning coffee runs. Esther's deadpan commentary turns mundane road salting into accidental ASMR... until she gets unexpectedly hot and bothered and has to call for backup. Agnes Goes Shopping...for Firearms!: The beloved lunatic Agnes hits the gun shop with surprisingly solid (and unsettling) advice on shotguns, recoil, overpenetration, and why a sawed-off might be perfect for your double-wide. It all culminates in the most unhinged shotgun wedding ceremony ever officiated mid-segment, complete with objections met by a lead retort. If you crave offbeat humor, eccentric characters, and comedy that veers gloriously into the absurd and slightly sinister, this episode of The Albatross Cafe will have you laughing out loud (and maybe checking your motel peephole next time). It's the perfect chaotic escape; don't miss it! This episode dives into the fleeting, powerful moments in film that ignite creativity and linger in the soul, shaping artists and their craft. From iconic snarls to subtle glances, Scott and Abbey unpack the cinematic sparks that drive emotional and artistic impact, sharing personal anecdotes and insights from their own creative journeys. Key Takeaways Cinematic Moments as Creative Catalysts: Iconic scenes, like Harrison Ford's snarl in Raiders of the Lost Ark or Meryl Streep's subtle expressions in The Deer Hunter, deliver "acute catharsis," galvanizing viewers and inspiring artists to capture authentic emotion in their work. We Don't Need Another Diva: The Unforgettable Voice Celebrates the Raw Power of Janis Joplin & Tina Turner | Electric Secrets
Get ready to crank up the volume and feel the soul-shaking, microphone-melting energy of two legendary vocalists in the latest episode of The Unforgettable Voice, a segment of the Electric Secrets variety podcast! Hosted by the ever-charismatic Scott Leon Smith and featuring vocal expert Lori Turner, this episode dives headfirst into the raw, unfiltered power of Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. Recorded live at the vibrant Richland Academy of the Arts in Mansfield, Ohio—where young performers are crafting their own vocal magic, this episode is a high-octane tribute to two women who broke every rule in the vocal handbook and still left audiences begging for more. Expect laughs, insights, and a whole lotta passion as Scott and Lori unpack what makes these voices unforgettable. What You'll Hear Janis Joplin's Banshee Wail Meets Heartfelt Ballads: Scott and Lori explore how Janis Joplin's gritty, blues-rock scream in hits like "Piece of My Heart" wasn't just chaos; it was a deliberate, passionate choice. From her surprising soft and gentle moments on a Dick Cavett talk show to her raw socio-political protest through sound, Janis redefined what it meant to sing the blues as a white woman in the 60s. Tina Turner's Full-Body Fire: Lori breaks down Tina's electrifying vocal attack, which surges from the soles of her feet to the top of her range. Whether she's shimmying through "Proud Mary" or belting out "What's Love Got to Do With It," Tina's storytelling and physicality set her apart. Plus, Scott can't resist geeking out over her iconic role as the villain in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome ... because who else sings a Bond theme and rules a post-apocalyptic wasteland? Why We Need More Voices Like These: In a world of overproduced pop, Scott and Lori lament the lack of passion in today's music scene. They draw parallels to modern artists like Amy Winehouse, Pink, and Lady Gaga, who carry the torch of raw authenticity, and speculate on where Janis and Tina would fit in today's image-obsessed industry. What You'll Take Away Passion Trumps Perfection: Janis and Tina prove that raw, unpolished emotion can outshine technically "perfect" vocals, drawing listeners in with their heart and soul. Vocal Choices Define Artistry: Both singers made deliberate stylistic choices: Janis with her raspy protest and Tina with her full-body power, showing that knowing your instrument is key to iconic performances. Storytelling Is King: From Janis's socio-political screams to Tina's narrative-driven performances, their ability to tell stories through song remains a gold standard for artists today. Scene Context: Dedicated to the Craft Explores Tactics & Objectives Within Given Circumstances | Electric Secrets
In this episode of Dedicated to the Craft, a segment of the Electric Secrets variety podcast by MonsterVox Productions, host Scott Leon Smith dives deeper into the art of scene work. This episode builds on previous discussions by introducing the concept of working within given circumstances, using a scene called The Waiting Room to illustrate how actors can apply tactics and objectives to bring a script to life. Key Themes and Concepts Scott emphasizes the importance of tactics and objectives in acting, focusing on how they create dynamic, believable performances. This episode introduces the concept of breaking a scene into beats and applying specific tactics to each, ensuring a natural escalation of conflict and tension. Recap of Tactics and Objectives Tactics: Specific, actionable verbs (e.g., "proclaim," "comfort," "provoke") that actors use to drive their performance, fueled by imagination and vocal energy. Objectives: A combination of a tactic and a desired outcome (e.g., "hassle them so that they apologize"). Focal Point: Tactics and objectives always target a specific entity, such as another character, the audience, or an abstract concept. Beats: Dividing a scene into manageable parts to assign unique tactics for each character, creating a sense of rising action. Analyzing The Waiting Room Scott introduces a short scene titled The Waiting Room, featuring characters Alex and Jamie in a hospital waiting room. The dialogue has a melodramatic, poetic quality, which poses a challenge for actors to avoid playing the mood and instead focus on tactics. Applying Tactics to Performance Scott demonstrates how applying these tactics brings the scene to life, creating tension and conflict. By reading the scene with tactical energy, he shows how actors can make dialogue feel natural and dynamic, even with poetic or abstract language. He stresses that tactics, not mood, drive realistic performances, citing examples like Shakespeare and Waiting for Godot. Interactive Exercise: The Bridge Scott challenges listeners to apply the same techniques to a new scene, The Bridge, featuring characters Sam and Riley. The context is that they meet on a bridge at dusk, with an unspoken history between them. Exercise Instructions Read the Scene: Access The Bridge via the podcast transcript at www.monstervoxproductions.com under the Electric Secrets podcast page. Break into Beats: Divide the scene into manageable parts. Assign Tactics and Objectives: For each beat, assign a tactic for Sam and Riley, focusing on their vocal energy and objectives. Experiment: Read the scene with a partner, sitting back-to-back, to focus on vocal energy rather than physical performance. Experiment with different tactics to explore the scene's dynamics. Feedback: Email [email protected] for feedback on your work. Looking Ahead In the next episode, Scott will explore sense memory and emotional memory to add depth to characters and scenes, building on the foundation laid in this episode. What A Character Wants: Exploring The Application Of Objectives | Electric Secrets
Tactics & Objectives In Action On this episode of Dedicated to the Craft, part of the Electric Secrets variety podcast, hosted by Scott Leon Smith, we dive deeper into the creative process. Building on the previous episode's focus on using the "imagined energy of tactics" with specific action verbs (like "proclaim" or "comfort") to uncover character insights during rehearsal, this installment shifts to the concept of objectives. Scott reads the scene in a monotone to avoid preconceived interpretations, then assigns each character a single tactic to "ride like a wave" through the scene: Red's tactic is "hassle," and Blue's is "deny." He re-reads the scene, adding a phone filter to Blue's lines for clarity, demonstrating how vocal energy can reflect these tactics. Next, he introduces objectives using a "so that" phrase: Red's objective becomes "hassle so that Blue apologizes," and Blue's is "deny so that Red drops the subject." Another reading follows, showing how these objectives shape the interaction, even without specific context. To explore tactical flexibility, Scott changes Red's tactic mid-scene from "hassle" to "entice," keeping the objective intact, and notes how this shift might surprise Blue and reveal new character dynamics. He stresses that rehearsal is about experimentation—collaborating with scene partners and directors to discover what works—rather than performing for an audience. Finally, Scott simulates active listening by playing pre-recorded lines for Red and responding as Blue, highlighting how real-time reactions drive realism and immersion. He encourages actors to try these exercises with open scenes and peers, promising deeper scene work in the next episode. Get the Milk! Forget Motivations, Focus On Objectives When Preparing A Character | Electric Secrets
What's my motivation? What's your motivation? What's anybody's motivation? In this episode of Dedicated to the Craft, Scott Leon Smith sets to work to dismantle the preconceived notions actors (and their critics) have when it comes to the word (and mindset) behind "motivation." As an actor, your job is to act. And to act, you must be able to define your own objectives. At the end of the day, you (your interpretation of your character, your surroundings, and your relationships) is a concept that can be acted upon. Rather than looking externally for something to motivate you to take an action, think of acting as a verb - something you can do - rather than something you are waiting for as a catalyst that ultimately results in an action. It is important to know what's motivating your character to do the things that they're doing, but ultimately it's up to you to find the actions and the objectives of the character. Subscribe to Dedicated to the Craft and listen as Scott works to demystifying the theater profession by offering a foundation for creative life, and reinvestment in the creative process.
