Weighing Kids in Schools
Today we are talking about the recent proposal to weigh kids in schools as a way to identify obesity. You know how much we love it when we are reduced to numbers on the BMI and now that is being applied to children as they grow. It had us asking the question WTF?! As adults we have lived through years of being labelled and our value determined based on the category which we fall. We don't wish to repeat history to bringing in this measure alone. And never fear, we have come up with alternative uses for government funding in schools to help with the health of our children - mental and physical health. Here's the media release that we reference: https://www.acn.edu.au/media-release/every-school-aged-child-should-have-access-to-a-registered-nurse-to-maintain-healthy-weight Let us know what you think of this podcast. Importance of Skin Checks with Sally Everett
In this episode of the Empowered Women's Health Podcast, we are honored to welcome a passionate advocate for melanoma awareness and sun safety, Sally Everett. Sally shares a deeply personal journey that led her to become a board member for the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation. In September 2021, Sally's beloved father, Lionel, was diagnosed with a shocking and massive 22cm internal melanoma. Despite being one of the most sun-safe individuals Sally knew, her family had no idea that melanomas could be internal and faced immense challenges navigating information and support resources during their ordeal. Devastatingly, Lionel passed away in November 2021. In the aftermath of this loss, Sally and her family made a courageous decision to share their story, spreading awareness about melanoma, and advocating for better education and support resources. Their mission became clear: to emphasize the significance of sun protection, regular skin checks, and early detection. In November 2022, Sally's dedication to the cause caught the attention of The Australian Skin Cancer Foundation, who extended an invitation for her to join their board of directors. Recognizing the profound impact she could make in this role, Sally graciously accepted, embracing the opportunity to become a regional advocate for melanoma awareness and sun safety. In this episode, Sally sheds light on the importance of understanding melanoma risks, early detection, and the significance of consistent sun protection practices. She shares her advocacy journey and how she, as a non-medical professional, is determined to create education and awareness to prevent other families from enduring the pain of losing loved ones to this devastating disease. Tune in to this powerful episode as we learn from Sally's personal experience, garner insights on melanoma awareness, and gain a deeper appreciation for the impact of sun safety in our lives.
