We finish our time in the book of John today with John’s reiteration of the purpose of his gospel - that we would believe in Jesus, and that we would enter into the Kingdom of God and live life in His name.We specifically look at the seven signs Jesus performed that John shares, and the “I am” statements within the gospel, which clearly show the purpose of John’s gospel, so that we would know the God we worship.

John 21 “He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’” John 21:7

The truth is tyou have been created for a purpose. You have been created to thrive. Jesus wants you to find that purpose. We can know: Peace in our hearts Purpose for our lives Power for our mission. Today we unpack this further from the book of John. Peace be with you.

In this service, we examine ‘the silence of Saturday’; the period between the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Pastor Mike notes that whenever God appears to be silent in our lives, He is very much not. As Jesus says in verse 17, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ He is our Father as well, and one day we will see Him in all His glory.

Mark 14:66-72 This sermon explores Peter’s denial of Jesus, and examines how Peter’s godly grief contrasts with Judas’ worldly grief.

Jesus is in the political and spiritual capital of Jerusalem. Only five days earlier Jesus was welcomed as a king, before being betrayed, denied by His friend, and arrested by the religious leaders. Because those religious leaders cannot impose the death penalty, they hand Him over to Pilate to achieve their goals. Delivered by the hypocrisy of the religious elders, they don’t just want Him dead, they want Him discredited and shamed.From the text, we look at three points:The Kingdom Jesus HasThe Message Jesus BringsThe Rescue Jesus OfferIf His kingdom was on Earth, His authority could conquer the world, however, His kingdom comes from outside this world. The difference, He lays down His life, instead of coming to take life.Jesus sates that His message is to bear witness to the truth, and that everyone of the truth will listen. We are to abide in His word and know the truth. That is why he was born into this world.Pilate, finding no guilt in Jesus, offers Jesus the freedom by custom to the Jews at the Passover. Instead, they choose Barabbas, a criminal and insurrectionist. Barabbas is the first man to walk free in place of Jesus. We too are guily, beyond rescue by our own power. We too, are saved by Jesus’s substitution.

John 18:12-28Jesus’s arrest is the fulfillment of scripture. Up until this point, God’s people saw the law given to them as a vessel through which to be saved. However, Jesus’s perfect life made it clear that this was not the case - the law has another purpose. Today’s sermon examines the arrest of Jesus, highlights the law’s true meaning, and asks the questions:What do we need to be saved from?How are we going to be saved?

John 18:1-14After the upper room, Jesus withdraws to the Garden in Gethsemane to spend time in prayer. There Jesus will be arrested, orchestrated not by the power of man, but the will and authority of his father. By the knowing sacrifice of Jesus. He was arrested not in the light, but in darkness. Not in public, but in private. This is the intentional end of Jesus’s ministry on earth.

Jesus goes for your heart. Jesus changes your identity. Jesus calls you to follow. Jesus see who you are.

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 19-34

The Significance of the resurrection -Forgiveness -Eternal Life -Lordship

Mat 26:39 - And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

Mat 21:9 - And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

Peter, James and John ascend the mountain with Jesus and witness his awesome and majestic transfiguration.

A few weeks ago we learnt about what the fear of God means. Now we are in the second week of learning about the effects of the fear of God. The fear of the Lord is sanctifying. 1 Peter 1:13-19 Sanctification is being saved from the power of sin. What is the fear Peter talks about?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

A God who: Reveals Himself to the Humble Satisfies our Hearts Reveals our Hearts

13 And suddenly there was with the angel ha multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

The Saviour came to fulfil God's promises, save us from Sin, and to be a Light in the Darkness. His promise is true and available for all.

Continuing our deep dive into the book of Proverbs, we come to Chapter 7 - written in the voice of a father trying to raise a son in wisdom, warning him about the snares of sexual sin. God has a design for sex and an intended purpose & pattern - everything outside of this purpose & pattern is sexual sin.

Jesus stops to speaks to the Samaritan women at Jacob’s Well and reveals something profound about himself to her. He then explains to her the new way of understanding how we worship God. John 4:23 - But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

Proverbs 15:1 - A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The Proverbs help us to understand how the power of the tongue matters. Your words matter. Ps Matt takes us through the size of the problem and the source of the problem.

Proverbs 12:1 - Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.  

Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death.
