In de rubriek Research Talks praten we met onderzoekers van onze faculteit over hun lopend onderzoek. Voor deze aflevering van Faculty Focus gaan we het hebben over het respiratoir syncytieel virus, of beter bekend als RSV. Het begin van de lente is eigenlijk ook meteen het einde van het RSV seizoen. Om hierover te komen praten hebben we onderzoeker Sara Van Looy te gast. Sara is doctoraatsonderzoeker en mandaatassistent in het Laboratory for Microbiology, Parasitology and Hygiene aan de Universiteit Antwerpen en doet onderzoek naar Respiratory Infections en RSV bij professor Peter Delputte. 

In de rubriek Research Talks praten we met onderzoekers van onze faculteit over hun lopend onderzoek. Vandaag gaan we het hebben over ‘waarom we naar de darmen moeten kijken om de ziekte van Parkinson beter te begrijpen’. En daarvoor hebben we Sebastiaan De Schepper aan onze podcasttafel. Sebastiaan werkt aan het VIB-UAntwerp Centre for Molecular Neurology waar hij in het Laboratory for Gut-Immune-Brain Axis Research onderzoek doet naar hoe het immuunsysteem buiten de hersenen bijdraagt aan de ontwikkeling van de ziekte van Parkinson.Meer info: https://blog.vib.be/new-study-highlights-intestinal-macrophages-as-early-drivers-of-parkinsons-disease  

In onze rubriek ‘The Faculty Book Dippers’ duiken we samen in een boek. Voor deze aflevering hebben we twee gasten aan onze podcasttafel: Barbara Ceuleers en Sebastiaan Engelborghs. Barbara is germaniste en journaliste voor VTM Nieuws. En Sebastiaan is professor en diensthoofd neurologie aan de VUB en UZ Brussel. Samen schreven ze het boek ‘Vergeet dementie’, een gids om alzheimer en dementie te voorkomen.1 op 5 mensen krijgt een dementiediagnose. Daarom wordt het ook wel dé ziekte van de 21ste eeuw genoemd. En voor Barbara kwam deze ziekte heel dichtbij. Haar vader Jan Ceuleers kreeg alzheimer, net zoals zijn moeder. Omdat ze gezien heeft welke impact de ziekte heeft, gaat Barbara op zoek naar manieren om alzheimer te voorkomen. Uit onderzoek blijkt immers dat we tot bijna de helft van de gevallen van dementie kunnen voorkomen of op zijn minst uitstellen door rekening te houden met 14 risicofactoren. 'Vergeet dementie' is uitgegeven bij Ertsberg: https://ertsberg.be/boek/vergeet-dementie/

Arthur investigates spray freeze drying as a novel drying process for the formulation of probiotic powders and this with Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG as a model probiotic strain.

In de rubriek Research Talks praten we met onderzoekers van onze faculteit over hun lopend onderzoek. Voor deze aflevering van Faculty Focus hebben we het met onderzoeker Stef Lauwers over olijfolie.  Stef is momenteel verbonden aan NatuRAPT aan de Universiteit Antwerpen. Voor zijn doctoraat deed hij onderzoek naar de biotransformatie, in vitro, en het klinische effect van de polyfenolen in olijven op onze cardiovasculaire gezondheid.Homerus noemde het 800 jaar voor Christus al ‘het vloeibare goud’ en algemeen wordt aangenomen dat zo’n 6000 jaar geleden voor het eerst olijfolie geproduceerd werd in het Middellandse Zeegebied. Het mediterraan dieet staat erom bekend om erg gezond te zijn en daar heeft het gebruik van olijfolie veel mee te maken. Maar wat maakt die extracten van olijven nu zo gezond?

In de rubriek Research Talks praten we met onderzoekers van onze faculteit over hun lopend onderzoek. Voor deze aflevering van Faculty Focus kijken we samen met professor Joachim Mariën naar hoe de klimaatverandering het risico op nieuwe virussen vergroot en we reizen naar Haut-Katanga in de Democratische Republiek Congo voor een terugblik op 100 jaar malaria-onderzoek. Joachim is professor in Virusecologie aan het Tropisch Instituut in Antwerpen. Daar is hij onder meer verantwoordelijk voor een internationaal onderzoeksproject dat zich richt op de impact van de mens op de biodiversiteit en het ontstaan van infectieziektes in Afrika. 

In Research Talks, we meet with researchers from our faculty and discuss their latest research.For this episode of Faculty Focus, we’re going to talk about the chemical safety of Novel Plant-Based Foods. Researchers Alicia Macan Schönleben and Fatima den Ouden, both from the Toxicological Centre of the University of Antwerp, have recently published a paper in Environmental Science & Technology where they investigate the safety of Novel Plant-Based Foods. 

In de rubriek Research Talks praten we met onderzoekers van onze faculteit over hun lopend onderzoek. In deze aflevering van Faculty Focus hebben we het met professor Ruth Appeltant over de twee laatste noordelijke witte neushoorns en hoe bedreigde diersoorten gered kunnen worden door het in vitro aanmaken van eicellen. Voor meer info over het onderzoek van professor Ruth Appeltant.

In de rubriek Research Talks praten we met onderzoekers van onze faculteit over hun lopend onderzoek. Onderzoekers Tim Boogaerts en Natan Van Wichelen van het Toxicologisch Centrum van de Universiteit Antwerpen namen plaats aan de Faculty Focus-tafel om over hun onderzoek te praten. Voor hun onderzoek duiken ze dagelijks het riool in om ons afvalwater te bestuderen. In ‘De Terugblik’ praten we met kersverse emeriti van de Universiteit Antwerpen van de faculteit Farmaceutische, Biomedische en Diergeneeskundige Wetenschappen. Hoe blikken zij terug op hun carrière aan de universiteit? Hoeziet hun toekomst eruit? Wat gaan ze het meeste missen? Emeritus professor Louis Maes heeft naar eigen zeggen ‘een omgekeerde carrière’ gehad. Als afgestudeerde dierenarts ging hij aan de slag in de industrie bij Janssen Pharmaceutica Johnson & Johnson, om pas later zijn carrière aan de Universiteit Antwerpen uit te bouwen. ‘Beide werelden hebben hun voor- en nadelen’, vertelt Louis Maes. ‘Ik ben heel gelukkig geweest op de universiteit.’

In onze nieuwe rubriek ‘The Faculty Book Dippers’ duiken we samen in een boek. Voor deze aflevering hebben we Emilie Cardon te gast. Emilie is neurowetenschapper en auteur van het boek ‘Het Buigzame Brein’, waarin ze op zoek gaat naar de wetenschap achter neuroplasticiteit. Hoe plastisch zijn onze hersenen? Daarnaast is Emilie ook oud-student van onze faculteit waar ze afstudeerde als master in de neurowetenschappen. In ‘De Terugblik’ praten we met kersverse emeriti van de Universiteit Antwerpen van de faculteit Farmaceutische, Biomedische en Diergeneeskundige Wetenschappen. Hoe blikken zij terug op hun carrière aan de universiteit? Hoe ziet hun toekomst eruit? Wat gaan ze het meeste missen?Prof. emeritus Annemie Van der Linden stond aan het hoofd van het Antwerp Bio-Imaging Lab. Met haar lab zette ze de Univeristeit Antwerpen op de kaart voor neurobeeldvorming van kleine proefdieren.Het Antwerp Bio-Imaging Lab speelt een pioniersrol in het uitvoeren van MRI-scans voor het ontrafelen van neuroplasticiteit en neurodegeneratie door middel van niet-invasieve technieken. Op die manier draagt het bij aan het vroegtijdig opsporen van hersenziekten en het vinden van nieuwe targets voor therapie.Na een carrière van meer dan 40 jaar aan de UAntwerpen is professor Van der Linden als ‘emerita met project’ nog actief betrokken bij de afronding van haar onderzoek.

Under supervision of Professor Pieter Van Der Veken in the Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry, she researches Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and focusses on a new methodology: targeted protein degradation.

Je hebt meer gemeen met een zebravink dan je op het eerste zicht zou denken. Wetenschapper in de biochemie Jolien Diddens onderzocht voor haar doctoraat aan de Universiteit Antwerpen naar het belang van DNA-methylatie bij het sluiten van de kritische periode waarin zebravinken hun zang leren. ‘Er zijn veel gelijkenissen tussen de ontwikkeling van zang bij vinken en spraak bij mensen’, aldus Jolien Diddens.
