Ep 132 - My Child Only Listens to Dad

Many parents quietly carry the same frustration: "Why does my child listen to my spouse… but not me?" It can feel personal. It can feel unfair. And if you're the parent constantly repeating yourself while your partner walks in and gets instant compliance, it can even make you wonder if you're doing something wrong. In this episode, Jenn unpacks what's really going on when kids seem to respond to one parent more than the other. The answer usually has far less to do with respect—and far more to do with family dynamics, emotional connection, and the roles parents naturally fall into. You'll hear why kids often respond differently to different parents, how the "fun parent vs. manager parent" pattern develops in many homes, and why the parent who spends the most time with the kids often gets the most pushback. Jenn also talks about how children test the relationships that feel safest, why consistency between parents matters, and how moms and dads can work together so one parent doesn't feel like the "bad cop" all the time. Instead of trying to force obedience or competing for authority, this conversation focuses on building cooperation, strengthening connection, and helping both parents feel respected and supported in their role. If you've ever felt like the background noise while your partner gets the instant results, you are not alone. This episode offers encouragement, perspective, and practical tools to help bring more balance—and peace—into your home.   Love this episode? Hit Follow so you get each of our episodes.       The backpacks hit the floor… and suddenly the emotions hit everyone. If afternoons in your home feel like a pressure cooker—tears, meltdowns, short tempers, and "I don't know what's wrong!"—this episode is for you. In Calming the After-School Angst, Jenn pulls back the curtain on what's really happening for kids after a long day of holding it together. You'll learn why after-school explosions aren't a sign of bad behavior or poor parenting—but a nervous system asking for relief. With warmth, honesty, and practical wisdom, this episode explores: Why kids often unravel after school (even when the day was "fine") How stress, hunger, sensory overload, and emotional suppression collide at pickup time Simple, connection-first strategies to help your child decompress How to respond without lecturing, fixing, or losing your cool What you need as a parent to stop absorbing the after-school emotional fallout Jenn shares real-life stories, doable shifts, and compassionate reminders that you are not failing—your child is processing. Ep 130 - Mental Health Matters (Featuring Turning Point)

In this inspiring episode, we sit down with the passionate young founders of Turning Point Clothing SK—a high school entrepreneurship class project that transformed into a powerful movement for mental health awareness. Born from a place of grief and courage, these remarkable young men—now in their early twenties—share how their own struggles became the spark for change. Their mission is rooted in the insight that many suicide survivors name a "turning point" as the moment they chose to keep going. That's where the name comes from—and that's what they're offering others: hope, honesty, and a voice. Backed by the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, these youth have ensured that every dollar raised goes directly toward mental health initiatives that matter. With wisdom beyond their years, they speak openly about anxiety, depression, grief, and the real pressures today's teens face. Whether you're a parent, educator, or someone walking your own mental health journey, this conversation is raw, real, and necessary. You'll walk away with deeper insight, practical support, and a sense of community.   Logan's Bio: I'm a paramedic with Fort Qu'Appelle Valley Ambulance Care and a firefighter with Regina Fire & Protective Services. I co-founded Turning Point Apparel, a mental health clothing brand that donates 20% of its profits to suicide prevention. I also helped start the You Matter Foundation to support accessible mental health care and education. Ep 129 3 Ways to Slow Down Christmas

It's Christmas… but it doesn't feel like Christmas. You've booked the sleigh ride. Said yes to the cookie exchange. Nailed the elf antics, the concerts, the gifts, the matching pajamas. And somewhere between the peppermint lattes and the Pinterest-perfect moments… it hit you. "This doesn't feel like joy. This feels like pressure." In this heartfelt episode,  Jenn gets real about the Christmas breakdown moment — that point in the season where the to-do list has taken over and the magic feels just out of reach. She invites moms, dads, caregivers, and overextended holiday heroes to take a deep breath and ask: What do I really want this season to feel like? Jenn shares gentle wisdom, a few stories from the frontlines of frazzled parenting, and practical ways to reclaim the peace, presence, and connection we all long for in December. This is your permission slip to stop chasing the "perfect Christmas" and start creating a meaningful one. Ep 124 Escaping Violence (Featuring Lisa Williams of Shelter Movers)

This week, we're honored to spotlight the launch of Shelter Movers Regina, led by the incredible Lisa Williams. As the 11th chapter of Shelter Movers in Canada, this life-saving service is opening a path to safety for women and children fleeing abuse—right here in our community. Shelter Movers began in Toronto in 2016 with one father, Marc Hull-Jacquin, who was on parental leave when he realized the gap in support for survivors of domestic violence. Since then, it has grown into a national organization, offering free moving and storage so that women don't have to choose between staying in danger or fleeing with nothing. For moms escaping violence, it's often not as simple as just leaving. Without this kind of help, many are forced to stay—or end up on the streets. Shelter Movers partners with local agencies to create a safe, coordinated exit, helping with logistics like moving dates, pet care, and essential resources. What makes Shelter Movers different is their focus on dignity and autonomy. They offer secure storage so you can hold onto your children's favorite toys, your family photos, or furniture—your safe items. You might not have a place for them today, but when you're ready, they'll be there. This episode is a tribute to the brave mothers, women, and families who make the hardest choice—and to the compassionate hands that help carry them forward. Volunteer, Support or Connect with Shelter Movers: Click Here. About Lisa Williams: With her extensive experience in community outreach and deep commitment to supporting survivors of abuse, Lisa Williams is poised to lead the chapter in its mission to offer safe and dignified moving and storage to those in need. When asked about her new role in ensuring the successful launch of Shelter Movers services in Regina, Lisa says: "Our community needs this service and the agencies that serve folks experiencing family violence are eager for a solution that will help save lives. Leaving a violent home is the worst day of their lives for women, their children and their pets. We support their brave choice to leave. Our unique organization will take care of their belongings and the move during an already stressful transition. I am honoured to bring this option to Regina this summer for families who need a safe moving option."   If you liked this weeks podcast hit follow, subscribe, rate or leave a review. Ep 123 Your 9 Year Old

"The age I get the MOST phone calls for is seven-year-olds—but do you know what age comes in second? Nine. That's right. Nine-year-olds are often underestimated and misunderstood, and today we're diving deep into why this age is such a turning point." In this episode, I unpack the beautiful complexity of parenting nine-year-olds—a stage that often sneaks up on us with its big emotions, growing independence, and surprising maturity. At nine, our kids are no longer the little ones tagging behind their toddler siblings, but they're also not quite tweens. We'll explore: Why nine-year-olds really need to feel seen and respected How to challenge them in ways that build confidence, not defiance What's happening developmentally at this age (spoiler: it's a lot!) Common parenting pitfalls—and how to shift our mindset Ways to strengthen your bond while still holding structure and boundaries You'll walk away with practical tools, compassionate insight, and a reminder that this age can be one of the most rewarding stages—if we learn to meet them where they are. If you've ever thought, "I don't know what happened to my sweet little kid!"—this one's for you. ✨ Let's make nine a year of growth, joy, and deeper connection. On today's Families Matter Most podcast, we're diving into Marriage and Fighting, featuring a special guest—my husband, Sean! Next, we shift to the elementary years, where fights center around screen time, extracurriculars, and learning when to stand firm or let go. Then, it's on to the pre-teen and teen stages, where battles revolve around cell phones, driving, and navigating the tension of having a nearly adult child who lacks full responsibility. Throughout each stage, we share survival strategies and discuss how easy it is to fall into blame and miscommunication. But don't worry—it does get easier! Ep 109 Why Kids are Bad After School

Welcome back to Families Matter Most Podcast! This week, we're diving into a topic that's both common and challenging for many parents: why do our kids act up and let loose in unhealthy ways right after school? We'll explore the reasons behind this behavior and offer actionable tips to help you manage it without feeling overwhelmed.  Big Breath, Moms! Before we dive into our tips for the kids, here's a quick strategy for you, the parent: Set an alarm for 3 p.m. every day. Use this time for a 5-minute coffee break or a moment to yourself. This brief pause will help you stay calm and collected, ensuring you're at your best to support your kids through their after-school transition. 4 Tips to Help Your Kids Adjust After School: 1. Crunchy Snack Time:    Encourage your child to have a crunchy snack when they get home. Crunchy foods can help them decompress and release some of the day's tension. Plus, it's a great way to keep their energy levels steady. 2. Quiet Time:    Give your child 10 to 15 minutes of quiet time right after school. This short break allows them to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the school day and helps them transition more smoothly into the home environment. 3. Move Their Body:    Physical activity is crucial. Whether it's a quick run around the yard, a dance session, or a short bike ride, moving their body helps release pent-up energy and improves their mood. 4. Healthy Relationships:    Ensure that the time immediately after school is reserved for healthy interactions. Avoid diving straight into difficult conversations or tasks. Instead, focus on positive and supportive engagement to foster a better mood and smoother transition. Managing after-school behavior doesn't have to be overwhelming. With these simple strategies—taking a calm moment for yourself, encouraging a crunchy snack, allowing quiet time, incorporating physical activity, and nurturing positive interactions—you can help your child adjust more easily and create a more harmonious end to the day.  Thanks for tuning in to this week's episode of Families Matter Most! If you found these tips helpful, don't forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with other parents who might benefit. Until next time, take care and keep nurturing those little ones with love and patience!
