190 - Building Prosperity in the Danger Zone | Joyce Brand

Spencer Heath, the Entrecom Model, and the City With One Owner – Joyce Brand is a proper OG of the Free Cities world: author of 'Pioneering Prosperity: The Morazán Model for Free Cities', co-author of Spencer Heath's posthumous Economics and the Spiritual Life of Free Men, and one of the very few people in this movement who has actually lived in a Free City. She spent three years as an early resident and chronicler of Ciudad Morazán, the "blue-collar" Honduran ZEDE built not for tech founders and digital nomads but for ordinary Honduran workers, in what was statistically one of the most dangerous parts of the country. Timothy Allen sits down with Joyce in Próspera for her first ever podcast recorded in person. It is the story of one of the great late-life plot twists: a forty-five year obsession with incentives that began with five unnecessary typewriters in Portland, Oregon in 1981, ran through a decade in Hollywood as a film editor, and ended with her moving to Honduras at 71 to watch a city rise from bare farmland. As she puts it, life begins at 70. It is also probably the clearest explanation you will hear of the entrecom model: Spencer Heath's idea that landowners, not politicians, are the natural providers of governance services, made real by the Italian industrialist Massimo Mazzone. Along the way: why Morazán and Próspera look completely different but are structurally almost identical, and what it is like to live in a place while the incoming government campaigns on destroying the legal framework it stands on. In this conversation: Joyce's first in-person podcast, stage fright, and Timothy's malaria blank in front of a thousand people Five memory typewriters nobody needed: the 1981 government order that revealed how perverse incentives are baked into the system Coercion and consent as a continuum, and thirty years of studying economics and political philosophy as a hobby A decade in Hollywood: editing a dozen independent features, starting in her late 40s, and cutting Eric Roberts Meeting Spencer MacCallum at Libertopia, and Spencer Heath's most controversial idea: the landowner as the natural provider of governance What governance actually needs to provide: security, fair dispute resolution, and infrastructure, and why everything else is the will to power Life begins at 70: the Peter Thiel question that gave her a purpose COVID, a cancelled move to Colombia, and the phone call that changed everything: Spencer bedridden in Mexico Finishing a 60-year book project at a dying man's bedside: Economics and the Spiritual Life of Free Men The last dinner party, and the four-hour conversation with Massimo Mazzone that ended with a house, a salary, and a mission: chronicle everything, the good and the bad Watching a city built from cows and bare farmland: the wall first, then the houses, then the road The escalator accident, a hospital that assumed COVID, and refusing remdesivir and the ventilator The autoimmune diagnosis that forced her back to the US, and taking responsibility for her own health How the ZEDEs became a campaign punching bag, and why the lady at the beauty salon had never heard of them The entrecom model explained: one entity holds title to all the land, and governance becomes a service you subscribe to rather than submit to The myth of home ownership: property taxes, zoning, and why you never really owned it anyway What if you get a bad owner? Contracts, third-party arbitration, and why customers leaving solves what voting cannot Why Morazán and Próspera are structurally almost identical: statutory autonomy, contractual governance, and monetary optionality (including the rent paid in stablecoin, not stable corn) Welfare versus real charity: entitlement, dependence, and the Morazán residents who pitched in for a neighbour's leg surgery Why governance as a business has never caught on: corporations, government favours, and why Pfizer is not capitalism Her vision: a world full of Free Cities, networked in alliances, so every human being can choose their governance Timestamps (audio version, includes Timothy's episode introduction): 0:00:30 - Introduction to episode 0:08:46 - Start of conversation: her first in-person podcast, and stage fright 0:12:03 - "You're a bit of an OG" 0:12:47 - Three years in Morazán, and the first visit: cows, farmland, one warehouse 0:14:01 - The 1981 typewriter story: perverse incentives revealed 0:17:44 - Thirty years of study, and a decade in Hollywood 0:21:53 - Meeting Spencer MacCallum at Libertopia 0:22:09 - Spencer Heath: the landowner as the natural provider of governance 0:27:33 - What governance services actually are: security, disputes, infrastructure 0:32:32 - Life begins at 70: the Peter Thiel question 0:34:43 - COVID, the cancelled move to Colombia, and the call to Spencer 0:37:12 - Finishing Economics and the Spiritual Life of Free Men at his bedside 0:39:37 - The last dinner party, and Massimo Mazzone's four-hour vision 0:42:40 - The offer: a house, a salary, and chronicle everything 0:45:15 - Watching the city rise: the wall, the houses, the road 0:46:54 - FreedomFest, the escalator accident, and two weeks in hospital 0:51:02 - The autoimmune diagnosis, and leaving Morazán 0:52:19 - Lessons from building a city 0:53:08 - Bureaucrats, customs, and trouble before the election 0:55:06 - The socialist campaign against the ZEDEs 0:57:02 - Did ordinary Hondurans actually care? 0:59:50 - The entrecom model explained 1:02:38 - The myth of home ownership 1:05:14 - What if you get a bad owner? 1:07:09 - Why Morazán and Próspera are structurally almost identical 1:08:24 - Monetary optionality, and the stable corn incident 1:10:02 - Subscribing versus submitting: opt-in, opt-out 1:11:04 - A world of networked Free Cities 1:12:30 - Welfare, real charity, and the Uber driver's surgery 1:20:53 - Local community, and why we now expect politicians to lie 1:23:06 - Can entrecoms scale? 189 - The Nomad Pioneer Betting on a Free City | Gonçalo Hall

Nomad Villages, the Bali Playbook, and Building a Caribbean Frontier – Gonçalo Hall is a pioneer of the digital nomad movement, the builder behind the world's first Nomad Village in Madeira and the founder of NomadX, who now runs the Roatán Tourism Bureau, a Próspera company whose job is to put a little-known Caribbean island on the map. A year ago, in episode 130, he told Timothy that almost nobody in the digital nomad world had heard of Próspera, and that its real problem was community and public relations. Twelve months later he has moved to Roatán with his wife and young daughter and works inside the ecosystem he was once only studying from the outside. Timothy Allen sits down with Gonçalo in person in Próspera, having spent almost a month living and working there himself. It is a candid conversation about what is genuinely working in this frontier and what plainly is not yet, and about whether a place this early can become the builder's dream Gonçalo believes it already is. They move from the full-circle story of two strangers meeting in Morocco to both ending up in Honduras, through the hard-won lessons of Madeira and Bali, to the thing Gonçalo says matters most and is hardest to fake: community, experience, and integrating the local people. Timothy is sceptical about the frontier gaps, the disjointedness, the missing beach and the missing cafe, and Gonçalo does not pretend they are solved. But both agree the opportunity here is unlike anything else in the space. In this conversation: The full-circle story: meeting at an invite-only nomad gathering in Morocco, and how a three-month consulting trip turned into moving his family to Roatán Why Próspera feels disjointed and cut off today, and why Gonçalo frames that as an opportunity rather than a failure The "come for a month" model: why a few days makes you a tourist, and a month makes you a builder, and how Timothy accidentally proved it Build for nomads, but do not make them your end client: why building for nomads means building for everyone The Bali and Canggu playbook, from a single co-working space to the best cafes and gyms in the world, built by nomads for nomads Building for experience: the two layers of physical infrastructure and community, and why Próspera can control both from scratch Pop-up months and thematic months: a longevity month, a biotech month, and structuring the serendipity so it does not take a month to click The missing third space, the cafe that should open at seven, and the beach club that could connect Duna Tower to Pristine Bay The school as an anchor: Pristine Academy, a Montessori class of eight nationalities, and Noma Collective's family month retreats What the Roatán Tourism Bureau actually does, and why nobody knows where Roatán, let alone Próspera, is The cruise ship problem: 2.1 million visitors spending sixty dollars a day, and how to convert them into people who stay Longevity as the standout bet: the GARM Clinic, gene therapy, Peter Diamandis's X Prize, and the peptide boom What peptides actually are, GLP-1s, and Gonçalo testing the longevity products he is about to promote The entrepreneur ranch on the Honduran mainland: rural tourism, free rent, and empowering locals to build Community as the real differentiator: why here and not the Bahamas or Lisbon, two hours from Miami with regulatory autonomy Próspera's head start and the regulatory canvas for AI, crypto and real estate that Europe makes impossible Managing expectations and the danger of overselling a cutting-edge but early-stage place Crawfish Rock: the neighbouring village, the "same two ladies" in every interview, and why integrating the locals protects the whole project The butterfly effect, and how Lauren Razavi of Plumia is the reason this conversation happened at all Timestamps (audio version, includes Timothy's episode introduction): 0:00:30 - Introduction to episode: a year on from Morocco 0:09:55 - Start of conversation: how a consulting trip became a move to Roatán 0:13:55 - No holds barred: what is working and what is not 0:16:37 - Why you should come to Próspera for a month 0:23:02 - Roatán is twenty years behind the Caribbean 0:24:00 - Build for nomads, build for everyone 0:25:16 - The Bali and Canggu playbook 0:33:39 - Pop-up months and thematic months 0:39:43 - The missing third space 0:44:47 - The school, and family month retreats 0:51:52 - The land between Duna Tower and Pristine Bay 0:56:24 - What the Roatán Tourism Bureau actually does 0:57:58 - The cruise ship problem 1:01:37 - Longevity, the GARM Clinic, and gene therapy 1:06:26 - What are peptides? 1:09:37 - The entrepreneur ranch on the Honduran mainland 1:15:07 - Community as the real differentiator 1:17:55 - Próspera's head start and the regulatory canvas 1:21:23 - The Free Cities Conference comes to Próspera 1:22:45 - Managing expectations, and not overselling 1:26:54 - Crawfish Rock and integrating the locals 1:30:38 - The butterfly effect, and Lauren Razavi's role Guest: Gonçalo Hall - X @Gonzohall | Roatán Tourism Bureau | NomadX Gonçalo's first appearance: EP 130 - Why Most Digital Nomads Have Never Heard of Próspera The Free Cities Podcast is the official podcast of the Free Cities Foundation hosted by Timothy Allen. 188 - Plan For Decentralisation | Polycarp Nakamoto

Community, Mesh Networks, and the Plan to Build a Parallel Society on Bitcoin – Polycarp Nakamoto is the masked, anonymous figure at the centre of Lab 484, a research laboratory and cluster of startups based in Austin, Texas, building for Web 5: a second internet that runs peer-to-peer on Bitcoin nodes rather than the centralised choke points of the web we use today. Through Lab 484 and its flagship Archipelago operating system, the community is assembling the hardware and software for a censorship-resistant mesh network, owned by nobody and run by everybody, that they believe will be needed when the internet as we know it fails. Timothy Allen sits down with Poly in person at a community compound near Austin for one of the more unusual conversations in the show's history. It is a conversation about whether you can rebuild the internet from the ground up on the one piece of digital infrastructure Poly considers genuinely decentralised: Bitcoin. They move from the question of anonymity, through the architecture of a second internet (mesh networks, Bitcoin nodes, Nostr, e-cash), to the harder problem sitting underneath all of it: people. Along the way: why Poly thinks the internet has roughly five years left, what a private AI living inside a shipping-container home looks like, why he frames the whole thing as a fork between a CBDC dystopia and a sovereign solarpunk future, and a genuine back-and-forth about whether any of this survives contact with the human condition. Timothy is an old Bitcoiner who runs his own node and lives on a remote farm, so in many ways Poly is preaching to the choir. But this is not an infomercial for the sovereign life, and the scepticism is real. In this conversation: Why Poly stays anonymous, and his argument that "everyone is building the mesh network," so the idea does not depend on any single person's identity Lab 484: a decentralised governance board with no ownership, a private membership association, and twelve startups each building a different piece of the new internet Web 1 to Web 5 in plain terms, with Amazon Sidewalk as the proprietary mesh network and Jack Dorsey's Bitchat as the open-source one Using Bitcoin nodes as a second internet: replacing the DNS, hosting "sovereign" websites that cannot be switched off, and why Poly says you need more nodes rather than mass adoption Ubiquiti point-to-point antennas, five-mile links, and how even a remote farm might connect The startups in detail: Bitcoin-node food trucks, shipping-container tiny homes, and a house with a private cloud, a private AI, and a private voice assistant built in Self-hosted, sovereign AI: the Framework Desktop with an AMD Ryzen AI Max chip, why open-source models are "cooking for yourself," and running it all on a node like Umbrel or Start9 The Archipelago operating system: a Linux-based, open-source Bitcoin-node OS bundling mesh networking, private AI and a private cloud, designed to spread from a USB stick What happens if the internet goes down: radio, Meshtastic, dark fibre, cheap satellites, and reusing old architecture with Nostr relays Jack Dorsey's Web 5 stack, as Poly tells it: decentralised identifiers, verifiable credentials, and decentralised web nodes, all designed to run on a nodal network AI you cannot hold accountable, the "golden calf," AI-generated code rot, and the spiritual experience as the new human frontier Digital ID as Timothy's line in the sand, the CBDC "triple threat" of identity, money and data, and the Tower of Babel as a parable for breaking centralisation Off-grid Bitcoin with Fedimint and Cashu, the warehouse-receipt analogy for e-cash, and earning a passive income by relaying data Network effects (eBay and PayPal, and Bitcoin's "seven network effects"), low time preference, and why staying under the radar only works up to a point Network states versus intentional communities, Próspera's legal survival, Liberland, and a spectrum of sovereignty that runs from hiding to recognition The closing argument: "remove the centralisation from your own heart first," and why anything worth building should be as easily replicated as Bitcoin Timestamps (audio version, includes Timothy's episode introduction): 0:00:25 - Introduction to episode 0:13:30 - Start of conversation: anonymity, the mask, and why the message does not depend on the man 0:15:01 - The Austin compound, Lab 484, and a decentralised governance board with twelve startups 0:20:00 - Web 1 to Web 5, Amazon Sidewalk, and Bitchat 0:25:51 - Bitcoin nodes as a second internet and a replacement for the DNS 0:41:00 - The startups: Bitcoin-node food trucks, shipping-container tiny homes, and a private AI home 0:43:15 - Self-hosted AI, the Framework Desktop, and the cooking analogy 0:55:00 - If the internet goes down: radio, Meshtastic, dark fibre, satellites, and Nostr relays 1:16:00 - AI accountability, the golden calf, and the spiritual frontier 1:24:00 - Digital ID as the line in the sand, CBDCs, and the Tower of Babel 1:39:00 - Off-grid Bitcoin: Fedimint, Cashu, and paying to send data 1:51:00 - Network effects, low time preference, and staying under the radar 2:09:00 - Network states, Próspera, Liberland, and the spectrum of sovereignty 2:16:00 - Individual sovereignty, running Archipelago, and "plan for decentralisation" Guest: Polycarp Nakamoto - X @polycarpweb5 | Lab 484 | Archipelago Foundation | Archipelago live demo | Public alpha The Free Cities Podcast is the official podcast of the Free Cities Foundation hosted by Timothy Allen. 187 - Free Cities Have a People Problem | Daniel Thompson

Building New Cities Starts With People: Digital Nomads, Families, and the Minimum Viable Society – Daniel Thompson is the co-founder and CEO of Noma Collective, a global community of remote workers, location-independent professionals and, increasingly, families, who travel and live together in different parts of the world a month at a time. Born and raised in the UK to a family of musicians, he spent his early twenties in music marketing and PR and ran one of the biggest weekly nights in the dubstep scene before leaving to travel. After two years on the road he settled in Buenos Aires, where he launched the country's first arts members club, and spent summers running large-scale European festivals including Outlook, Dimensions and Secret Solstice. He moved to Belize in 2019, and when the pandemic hit he reopened a hotel as a pop-up co-live that became Noma Collective in 2020. He has since acquired the work-travel program Hacker Paradise, and now develops the ideas at the centre of this conversation: his "7 Stages of Remote Life" framework and his new Minimum Viable Society project. He is based in Mérida, Mexico. Timothy Allen sits down with Daniel in Próspera for a conversation about the quiet problem underneath the whole free cities movement: not law, not land, but people. How do you actually get human beings to turn up, and then how do you get them to stay? They move from the idea that digital nomadism is a stage rather than a destination, through Daniel's belief that families are the missing key to critical mass, to his Minimum Viable Society project and a genuine disagreement between the two men about whether you build a new community on empty land or on one of the thousands of depopulated villages already standing across southern Europe. Along the way: how Noma started by accident in a locked-down Belize hotel, why it turned out to be solving loneliness rather than infrastructure, what a portable schooling network looks like, how a broken property ladder might be replaced with subscription-to-ownership, and why integrating with the existing local community matters more than any amount of capital. In this conversation: Why "people," not regulations or coastline, is the binding constraint on every new city and network state Digital nomadism as a stage, not a destination, and the path from remote work to multi-local living to a multi-generational network society "Multi-local," feeling at home in more than two places, a term Daniel credits to Emi of Crecimiento, Argentina's leading network state movement How Noma Collective began as a COVID pop-up in a Belize hotel, and why it turned out to be solving loneliness rather than infrastructure Why families, not lone nomads, may be the key to critical mass, and the 500 families who applied for a single month-long hub The Próspera family hub at Pristine Bay, and why walkability and a kitchen beat a resort every time Boundless Life and the case for connected, portable schooling The AI threat to an education system built on memorisation, and newer models like Alpha School and Acton Academy Return-to-office mandates, GitLab as a fully remote counterexample, and the "soft layoff" theory The Minimum Viable Society project: assembling a society from parts (health, housing, education, agriculture) instead of gathering like-minded people and hoping Subscription-to-ownership: using economies of scale to lower the barrier onto the property ladder, with echoes of the Homestead Act The build-versus-buy debate: empty land and a chateau near Montpellier, against Europe's depopulated villages Why galvanising the existing local community, rather than building an enclave, is essential Veritas Villages, SafetyWing and Plumia, and the partners already building the physical layer Timestamps (audio version, includes Timothy's episode introduction): 0:00:00 - Intro, episode 187, and the quiet problem of getting people to show up 0:03:43 - Sponsor: Veritas Villages 0:08:07 - Start of conversation: Bowie predicts internet dominance, AI, and the free cities movement 0:14:51 - How Noma Collective began, and digital nomadism as a stage not a destination 0:19:15 - Multi-local living and why families are the key to critical mass 0:24:34 - The Próspera family hub, schooling, and the AI threat to education 0:38:50 - Real estate, subscription-to-ownership, and the Homestead Act 0:45:40 - The Minimum Viable Society project and the chateau near Montpellier 0:58:00 - Build versus buy: Europe's depopulated villages 1:05:11 - Why a village beats a chateau, and closing thoughts Guest: Daniel Thompson - Noma Collective | LinkedIn | Minimum Viable Society | Instagram @nomacollectivehq The Free Cities Podcast is the official podcast of the Free Cities Foundation hosted by Timothy Allen. 186 - You're Not Allowed to Say This | Eric Kaufmann

Woke's 1960s Origins, the Race Taboo, and the End of the Progressive Era – Eric Kaufmann is a Canadian professor of politics at the University of Buckingham, where he directs the Centre for Heterodox Social Science. One of the most prominent academic voices on nationalism, national identity, and political demography, he is the author of Whiteshift: Immigration, Populism and the Future of White Majorities (Penguin, 2018) and Taboo: How Making Race Sacred Produced a Cultural Revolution (2024, published in the United States as The Third Awokening). After two decades at Birkbeck, University of London, he left in 2023 for Buckingham, Britain's self-described free speech university, following what he calls five years of steady hostility and being "cancelled by a thousand cuts." Timothy Allen sits down with Eric in the UK for an honest, often uncomfortable conversation about race, identity, and the things you are no longer allowed to say out loud. They move from Kaufmann's own cancellation story across two decades in British academia, through his central argument that woke is not new but the late-stage unfolding of the 1960s, to the claim that the whole edifice traces back to a single sacred taboo around race that formed in the mid-1960s and was then stretched and weaponised. Along the way: how affirmative action quietly mutated from equal treatment into enforced equal outcomes, whether woke is driven by women entering the professions or by feminine ideas, the survey data on who actually holds these views, and the hardest stretch of the conversation for Timothy, immigration, identity, and the contested idea of white culture, where the two men disagree openly and calmly. They close on Kaufmann's forecast that the progressive era has peaked, but that years of polarisation and populism lie ahead before anything settles. In this conversation: Kaufmann's cancellation story: four internal investigations between 2018 and 2022, and why he left a twenty year University of London post for Buckingham His core thesis from Taboo: woke isn't new, it incubated on campus for fifty years before social media and clickbait media blasted it everywhere The "big bang" of the modern moral universe: a good instinct against racism that hardened into an absolute taboo with no nuance How a sacred taboo becomes a weapon: stretch the meaning of racism and you can shut down almost any argument The quiet shift from equality of treatment to enforced equality of outcome, and the Orwellian word games that justified it Whether the rise of woke is about women entering the professions or about feminine ideas (emotional safety over free speech) The survey data on who is actually woke, broken down by age and sex, and why it is surprising Why Kaufmann rejects the simple pendulum theory, and why trans is the cultural left's first real defeat in public opinion in sixty years Attachment to your own group versus dislike of out-groups: why the psychology research treats them as separate things The contested idea of white culture, where Timothy pushes back hard and argues culture matters, not colour The coming demographic shift, and why Kaufmann thinks race and identity will matter more in the decades ahead, not less The distinction between the membership level (which should be open) and the system level (where caring about the pace of change is not racism) His forecast: an interregnum of polarisation and populism, and why he thinks de-radicalisation has to come from the left Timestamps (audio version, includes Timothy's episode introduction): 0:00:30 - Introduction to episode 0:11:02 - Start of conversation: Jordan Peterson and treading the academic tightrope 0:12:17 - Kaufmann's cancellation story: four internal investigations in four years 0:16:52 - Zooming out: living in the aftermath of the 1960s 0:18:27 - Why woke massified in the 2010s: social media and clickbait 0:19:31 - The big bang: the anti-racism taboo of the mid-1960s 0:23:55 - Back to the beginning: affirmative action in 1965, disparate impact in 1971 0:25:58 - How equal treatment quietly became enforced equal outcomes 0:27:15 - Word games, Orwell, and the redefinition of racism 0:30:02 - The feminization of culture: demographics or ideas? 0:33:58 - Who is actually woke: the survey data by age and sex 0:35:51 - Free speech versus emotional safety, public versus private life 0:38:54 - Who sets the taboos, and the problem of selective empathy 0:42:34 - Trans as the cultural left's first defeat in sixty years 0:44:22 - The right side of history and a belief system that cannot give ground 0:45:30 - Post-progressivism and the end of the progressive era 0:47:47 - Why young Britons moved left and young Canadians moved right 0:50:43 - Immigration, identity, and the discomfort around white culture 0:54:52 - Attachment to your own group is not the same as hatred of others 0:56:48 - What white culture actually means 1:02:12 - Timothy pushes back: culture, not colour 1:06:39 - White guilt and the ambient public morality 1:08:02 - Is defining people by race already outdated? 1:09:53 - Culture as outward expression, identity as inward attachment 1:13:23 - The Black Carol story and a child who never noticed skin colour 1:16:22 - The coming demographic shift and why Kaufmann thinks it will matter 1:17:39 - A legitimate democratic preference stigmatised as racism 1:20:09 - Does acknowledging race create a new divide? 1:23:08 - The next few decades: interregnum, polarisation, and who must back down 1:29:51 - Culture versus identity, and is Rishi Sunak English? 1:32:02 - Islam, Rupert Lowe, and halal slaughter at the village pub 1:34:19 - Competing versions of Britishness 1:37:58 - A free market of ears: the podcast's 95% male audience 1:41:12 - Membership versus system level: caring without being a racist 1:43:23 - Owen Jones, Ezra Klein, and who on the left will actually engage Guest: Eric Kaufmann - University of Buckingham | X | sneps.net The Free Cities Podcast is the official podcast of the Free Cities Foundation hosted by Timothy Allen. Timothy Allen sits down with Niklas in Austin, Texas, a few days after spending a month living alongside him in Próspera, for a wide-ranging conversation that moves from aging as a disease and the FDA's 1962 turning point, through China's rise to 30% of global pharma licensing deals in just ten years, Sid Sijbrandij's AI-assisted cancer fight and the Australian who built a personalised cancer vaccine for his dog using AlphaFold for roughly the cost of a genome sequence, to the Right to Try movement taking shape in Montana and New Hampshire and the regulatory model that could replace the FDA monopoly, and finally to what comes next for Próspera, phase one trials as a commercial beachhead, the Massimo Mazzone profit-first model at Ciudad Morazán, and why the ZEDE framework may be the most underappreciated governance innovation of our time. In this conversation: Why Niklas is spending time in Austin: building a supplementary regulatory pathway to the FDA, modelled on what CLEAR does for TSA airport security Why aging isn't technically a disease and why that distinction is holding longevity biotech back The FDA's 1962 efficacy mandate: when drug costs exploded and pharma lost its independence Sid Sijbrandij's "founder mode" approach to his own bone cancer, and the Australian who made a personalised cancer vaccine for his dog for $3,000 using AlphaFold and ChatGPT China going from near zero to 30% of global pharma licensing deals in a decade and what that means for the United States The three regulatory models: FDA monopoly, the Dubai private-certifier model, and the Próspera insurance-based model based on Robin Hanson's ideas Right to Try in Montana and New Hampshire: what's actually changing, how private certifiers work, and the cannabis Cole Memo as the precedent Why Próspera should focus on phase one clinical trials and why medical tourism alone isn't enough without first building credibility Robin Hanson's idea of fusing your doctor and your life insurance company: aligning incentives to actually keep you alive Massimo Mazzone and Ciudad Morazán's profit-first model versus the venture capital model at Próspera: two legitimate approaches to the same problem Why the three Honduran ZEDEs Próspera (knowledge work), Ciudad Morazán (manufacturing), and Orquídea (agriculture) map almost exactly onto the three sectors of the economy The Free Cities Conference coming to Próspera in September: why it matters and who will be there Enjoy the conversation. 184 - What AI Can't Replace | Matthew Mottola

He Swapped His Production Team For Claude – Matthew Mottola is an American who fell in love with freelancing in his twenties and then spent the next decade trying to drag the rest of corporate America with him. He was early at Gigster, built the Microsoft 365 Freelance Toolkit, co-authored The Human Cloud with Matthew Coatney (HarperCollins), and now runs Human Cloud as an aggregator of flexible-talent platforms, the layer between Fiverr at the bottom end and Deloitte at the top, where you go for projects in the $500K to $5 million range that need real specialists, not resumes from a staffing firm or markup from an agency. Timothy Allen sits down with Matthew at the Running Remote conference in Austin for a wide-ranging conversation that goes from the freelance economy and why most agencies are quietly run by freelancers anyway, through the 40% layoffs he expects at large enterprises, the five-jobs-into-one compression LinkedIn calls a "builder," and the 98% automated podcast workflow he's built around Claude, to AI slop and in-person craft and the question of which parts of the content stack are worth protecting, why neither the remote nor freelance world has a dominant media outlet, and finally agentic, specialized, outcome-driven work as Matthew's three-word thesis for what the future actually looks like. Matthew has been on the front line of the freelance economy since 2012, has spoken across more than 50 international stages, and contributes to Forbes. He's also a Babson College graduate, which becomes the seed of a tangent on university advice for kids in the back half of the episode. This is one of a small batch of interviews Timothy recorded at Running Remote in Austin. In this conversation: Why Human Cloud sits between Fiverr and Deloitte, and why staffing firms are basically Fiverr replicated for the enterprise Why most agencies are quietly hiring freelancers and not telling you, and why Google's 60% contractors never make it into the ad campaign 40% layoffs at large companies, LinkedIn's five-roles-into-one "builder" framing, and Block teams going from 14 to 6 The 98% automated Human Cloud podcast workflow: Riverside, Claude, Megaphone, and a "/human" command trained to make output not look like AI Tim's pushback on AI sloppiness, and the underwear-vs-t-shirt analogy for what you automate and what you protect Why trust is the irreplaceable core of a podcast and the in-person conversation never gets automated Why the freelance and remote work industries have no dominant media outlet despite the size of the industry The Microsoft $99 million misclassification lawsuit and the legal architecture that quietly shaped the whole industry The future of work in three words: agentic, specialized, outcome-driven University advice for 14-year-old daughters, Babson vs Oxford and Cambridge, and why "you don't need to go to university" usually comes from someone who went to Stanford The free cities question: who do you sue? and why Próspera's legal architecture is part of the answer Enjoy the conversation. 183 - The Bitcoin Free City | Tomek Kołodziejczuk

He Quit Poland for the Best Job in Bitcoin - Tomek Kołodziejczuk is a Polish bitcoiner from Warsaw, where he founded the Bitcoin Film Festival, now four years old and the first of its kind in the world. A year ago he flew to Roatán to visit Próspera, the Honduran free economic zone he'd been hearing about for years. On his second day he bought a motorbike from Facebook Marketplace to lock the decision in. He hasn't been back. Timothy Allen sits down with Tomek for a wide-ranging conversation that goes from the new Hollywood sub-genre of Satoshi Nakamoto films and the quantum threat to Satoshi's million coins, through Iran and the Great Reset and why neither of them would accept the job of king of the world, to the Bitcoin District inside Próspera, Orangeville (the wooden modular Bitcoin neighborhood climbing a jungle valley), the renovated Bitcoin Arena, the quarterly BitChill retreats, and Tomek's bet that this small Caribbean island can become the most Bitcoin-dense place in the world. Tomek runs the Bitcoin District inside one of the only jurisdictions on earth where a company can pay its taxes in Bitcoin and keep its books denominated in BTC. He's 33. He's been at the front line of Poland's freedom movement for the better part of a decade. And he has a lot to say about what it actually feels like to build a city from scratch in a jungle. In this conversation: The new Hollywood sub-genre of Satoshi Nakamoto films, and why Tomek doesn't actually want anyone to figure out who Satoshi was Hal Finney cryogenics, the quantum threat to Satoshi's million coins, and the game theory of the honeypot Iran, the Great Reset, global capital as the actor moving the world, and why neither Tomek nor Tim would accept the job of king of the world The Bitcoin District inside Próspera: what it is, what it isn't, and how it's different from a nomad village Orangeville, the wooden modular Bitcoin neighborhood climbing a jungle valley, with funding secured for the first phase of over a dozen apartments The Bitcoin Arena, BitChill, Bitcoin Games (two BTC of prizes), and the Bitcoin Roatán coalition that ties them together The bet that Roatán becomes the most Bitcoin-dense island in the world, and where Madeira (with ~170 merchants) sits today Running a business on a Bitcoin standard: 1% corporate tax, books denominated in BTC, residency in months, and the only jurisdiction on earth that allows it Why Próspera's gaps (the missing coffee shop, the missing scooter rental, the missing town hall) are the real opportunity, not the problem The one-month stay strategy, the Duna Tower, and why anyone with a builder mindset should come and try a month Bitcoin Vibe Camp in August, Sovereign Engineering coming to Roatán, and what's next at the Free Cities Conference in September Enjoy the conversation. 182 - Jailed for a Tweet | Lucy Connolly

12 Months in Peterborough Prison for One Deleted Post - Lucy Connolly is a mother and childminder from Northampton. On the evening of the Southport murders in July 2024, she fired off an angry tweet, regretted it within hours, and deleted it. A week later, two police officers knocked on her door. Twelve and a half months later, she finally walked out of HMP Peterborough. Timothy Allen sits down with Lucy for a conversation about what happens when an ordinary mother becomes a national headline, the deleted tweet, the dawn raid, the magistrate's court video link, the women she met inside, the husband she came home to, and the country that locked her up while telling itself it still had free speech. Lucy is on license until March 2027, which means she has to watch every word she says, including in this conversation. She's not bitter. She's funnier than she has any right to be. And she has a lot to say about what Britain has quietly become. In this conversation: The Southport murders, the deleted tweet, and the week between writing it and the police arriving at the door Why Lucy is convinced her arrest was a political takedown of her husband, a Conservative councillor Section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986 — and why a tweet became a 31-month prison sentence HMP Peterborough, run by Sodexo, and how a private prison compares to the state-run HMP Drake Hall The women she met inside, including Virginia McCullough, who murdered her parents and lived with their bodies for four years The case of Peter Lynch, the grandfather who died at HMP Moorland after being jailed for the Southport disorder Ricky Jones, the Labour councillor who called for protesters' throats to be cut and walked free Why the police, in Lucy's view, have become politically captured and why serving officers are leaving in disgust Free speech, the First Amendment, and whether Britain has a way back Why she's not bitter, and why the worst thing that could happen to her had already happened years before Enjoy the conversation. 181 - Brazil's First Free City | Paloma Lecheta

The Free City That's Been 45 Years in the Making - Paloma Lecheta is a Brazilian entrepreneur and co-founder of Founder Haus, a hub for what she calls healthy entrepreneurship in Jurerê Internacional, a private neighbourhood on the island of Florianópolis. After accelerating around 1,800 startups across Brazil, she is now part of a small group of founders trying to do for Brazil what Próspera is doing for Honduras, turn a quietly functioning private development into a formally recognised Free City. Timothy Allen sits down with Paloma in Honduras for a conversation about the 45-year-old Brazilian neighbourhood that has been running its own water, sewage, security and urban planning since 1980, the visionary banker who built it from raw beach scrub, and the new generation of founders now trying to give it the legal autonomy to match. The result is a story of a Free City that already exists, mostly hiding in plain sight, and the people quietly trying to formalise it before the rest of the world notices. In this conversation: The story of Péricles de Freitas Druck, the Brazilian banker who built a private city in 1980 with no reference points and 45 years before the charter cities movement existed Why philanthropy often fails to solve the problems it claims to, and why business may be the better tool Healthy entrepreneurship: why founder burnout is a business problem, not just a personal one How Jurerê Internacional privatised water, sewage, security and urban planning while staying within Brazilian law The brain drain problem: 1,200 millionaires left Brazil last year, and why most of them didn't want to Floripa 10, the proposed Digital Economic Zone that would give Jurerê formal regulatory autonomy Ipê City, Brazil's first pop-up city, and how Founder Haus, Peerbase and Tools for the Commons are stacking experiments on top of each other Why the difference between crazy and visionary is just execution Enjoy the conversation. 180 - Why Bad Ideas Persist | Crémieux

IQ, Institutions & Why Every Country Is Run Poorly - Crémieux is a pseudonymous statistician and writer with a large following on Substack and X. He likes to take widely cited studies, reopen the data, and argue the conclusions don't always hold up. His readers include Elon Musk and JD Vance, and his work circulates widely in tech and policy circles. Timothy Allen sits down with Crémieux in Honduras, for a wide-ranging conversation about IQ, institutions, fertility, biotech, agglomeration economies, and why he thinks every country on Earth, even Singapore, is run poorly. The result is part interview, part real-time error-correction service: every casual claim Timothy makes gets gently audited against the data, and the answers are usually "harsher, less equal, and less comforting than people want them to be." In this conversation: Why complex problems get clearer with honest inquiry and why the answers are usually harsher than people want The IQ data nobody wants to talk about, and why most "special" groups aren't statistically special at all Why El Salvador transformed without the people changing and what that says about institutions over genetics Honduras as a case study in self-imposed poverty: severance taxes, FDI delays, and 80% informal employment What predicts socialist tendencies (and why champagne socialists are a statistical blip) Voice vs exit: why Switzerland and Dubai work, and why one-world government would be a "global Honduras" The privacy-biotech tradeoff: Florida's Sunshine Genetics Act, China's biobank race, and the data we owe the future The unsolved problem at the heart of every charter city: how do you generate the agglomeration effects of San Francisco? 179 - My Family Owns a Country | Liam Bates

Sealand, Sovereignty & Building Freedom Without Permission - For nearly six decades, the Principality of Sealand has stood as one of the world’s most famous experiments in self-declared sovereignty: a former wartime sea fort occupied in 1967 by Paddy Roy Bates and still run by the Bates family today. What began as a pirate-radio outpost became a long-running test case in jurisdiction, legitimacy, and what it means to build freedom outside existing systems. Timothy Allen sits down with Prince Liam Bates of the Principality of Sealand, grandson of Paddy Roy Bates and part of the family still carrying the project forward. Liam tells the story of how Sealand emerged from the pirate radio era, survived court battles, repelled a coup attempt, and evolved from a rough offshore platform into a still-living symbol of independence, experimentation, and institutional persistence. In this conversation: What life on Sealand was really like, and why hardship helped forge its culture How Paddy Roy Bates turned a pirate-radio stronghold into a sovereignty project The legal case that shaped Sealand’s claim to being outside UK jurisdiction Why Sealand still matters as an early real-world test of opt-in governance How pirate radio, the BBC monopoly, and information freedom shaped its origins The role of family continuity in keeping long-term sovereignty projects alive What the 1978 coup attempt reveals about legitimacy, force, and state-like behavior Why Sealand is now exploring eCitizenship, online community, and new digital forms of nationhood This episode is a fascinating look at one of the most enduring edge cases in the freedom space - a project that sits somewhere between micronation, myth, legal anomaly, and genuine governance experiment. It is a conversation about sovereignty not as theory, but as something people try to live, defend, and pass on across generations. 178 - 8 Hard Truths from 25 Years of Investing in Free Cities | Patri Friedman

Why Most Free City Projects Fail & What Actually Works - After more than two decades investing in charter cities, seasteading, and governance innovation, Patri Friedman has arrived at a blunt conclusion: most attempts to build new societies fail not because of bad ideas, but because of poor execution. Timothy Allen sits down with the founder of The Seasteading Institute and General Partner at Pronomos Capital, the first venture capital fund dedicated to charter cities. Patri has spent 25 years exploring and investing in the Free Cities ecosystem and shares eight hard-earned lessons from trying to turn governance experiments into real, functioning jurisdictions. In this conversation: Why most projects fail at the execution stage, not the idea stage The critical difference between Layer 1 platforms (charter cities and Free Cities) and Layer 2 communities (network states, pop-ups, and nomad villages) Why seasteading remains conceptually powerful but economically impractical compared to land-based free cities The importance of building real economic engines before relying on legal or regulatory advantages Why founders in their 40s often outperform younger founders in this space The case for building for locals rather than digital nomads to ensure long-term stability How LARPing and over-theorizing can derail serious governance projects Why Próspera's survival under a hostile government in Honduras is the proof of concept the entire movement needed This episode is a grounded look at what it actually takes to build free cities - moving beyond theory into the realities of politics, economics, and long-term institutional change. 177 - The Próspera Master Plan | Gabriel Delgado

Inside Próspera's Survival, Legal Battle, and Vision for Governance as a Service - Próspera is the world's most closely watched startup city - a Free City project on the Honduran island of Roatán operating under the ZEDE framework with its own civil code, tax structure, and regulatory system. After surviving years of political hostility from the previous Honduran government, it now faces a pivotal moment: a friendlier administration, an ongoing CAFTA arbitration, and a development roadmap that could reshape how governance experiments scale globally. In this episode, Timothy Allen sits down with Gabriel Delgado, co-founder and Chief Development Officer of Próspera. Gabe has worked in special economic zones since 2009 and launched Próspera in 2017. He pulls back the curtain on what the last several years have actually looked like - the political pressure, the decision to fight rather than retreat, and what comes next. In this conversation: The current legal status of Honduras's ZEDE framework and why it's more nuanced than the headlines suggest How Próspera survived a hostile government that made shutting it down a top political priority The ongoing CAFTA arbitration and what a deal with the new administration could look like Próspera's masterplan: a walkable, non-car-centric city on Roatán modelled on Hong Kong Plans for a Shenzhen-style nearshoring hub on the Honduran mainland connected by autonomous drone logistics Governance as a service: how Próspera's regulatory model could be licensed to other countries Why Próspera's success may be the single most important thing for the global Free Cities and charter cities movement Timestamps (Audio version only, include's Timothy's episode introduction): 0:00:29 - Introduction to episode 0:09:18 - Start of conversation 0:14:24 - Timothy's life in Próspera 0:19:30 - Building on the frontier 0:24:36 - The masterplan and city design 0:29:42 - Mainland vision and logistics 0:34:48 - Political pressure and survival 0:39:54 - Why Próspera matters globally 0:45:00 - Legal framework and ZEDE status 0:50:06 - Arbitration and legal protections 0:55:12 - Relationship with the new government 1:00:18 - Governance as a service 1:05:24 - Scaling the model internationally 1:10:30 - Why Próspera must succeed Guest: Gabriel Delgado-Ayau — x.com/gabedelgadoa | prospera.co The Free Cities Podcast is the official podcast of the Free Cities Foundation, hosted by Timothy Allen. 176 - Why Everything Feels Broken | James Price

“When Starmer came in in 2024, how many people across the entire British state changed jobs? Two hundred. One hundred ministers… and one hundred special advisors… And that’s it. And everybody else in that deep state stayed exactly the same.” - Timothy Allen sits down with James Price, former UK government adviser and political commentator, for a wide-ranging conversation on what it’s really like inside the machinery of the modern state. Drawing on his experience at the heart of government, James offers a candid perspective on why many institutions are increasingly struggling to deliver, how political incentives shape decision-making behind the scenes, and why problems that appear local to the UK may in fact be symptoms of a much broader systemic shift. The discussion explores the growing gap between what governments promise and what they can realistically achieve, the pressures created by cultural and demographic change, and whether traditional models of governance are equipped to handle the complexity of what’s coming next. Along the way, they touch on the limits of reform, the role of public perception, and what all of this might mean for those looking beyond the nation-state for alternative ways of organising society. 175 - The Last Free Place | Oswald Horowitz

“I will die at sea for sure. I’m not going back.” - Timothy Allen sits down with filmmaker Oswald Horowitz, the man behind the upcoming documentary The Legend of Landi, to trace the strange true story of Samuele Landi, an Italian tech entrepreneur who set out to live beyond the reach of the normal system on a rusty barge in international waters between Dubai and Iran. What begins as Oswald's quixotic quest to track Landi down, involving ignored Telegram messages, a ketchup-themed short film, a Croatian police ban, and a Dubai fisherman willing to sail forty miles offshore, opens out into something far bigger. Landi's life turns out to be nothing like the press had painted it, and the story takes turns that nobody could have scripted. This is a conversation about myth, obsession, sovereignty, and the kind of rare individuals willing to push past every frontier to find out whether real freedom can actually be built at sea. 174 - The Architecture of Spontaneous Order | Patrik Schumacher

"Land use should not be prescribed by any planning regime. People come together into the city by seeking out very particular connections and a multitude of connections. And they have to find each other. There needs to be the degree of freedom to associate and self-organize what I call the co-location synergies." - Timothy Allen sits down with Patrik Schumacher, principal architect at Zaha Hadid Architects and the theorist behind “parametricism,” to talk about what happens when cities are allowed to evolve like markets: bottom up, adaptive, and shaped by real human purposes rather than planning committees. Starting with the 2008 crisis and Schumacher’s path into Austrian economics, the conversation moves into why he thinks the built environment is one of the most anti-market domains in the modern West, and how that shows up as paralysis, affordability problems, and “garbage spill” urbanization with no coherent identity. From there, Patrik makes the case that architecture should not impose a preconceived formal order, but should make an emerging network of relationships legible: tracing flows, affiliations, and co-location synergies the way a living ecosystem organizes itself. They close by bringing it back to Free Cities: whether a city with more freedom should look different, why frontier governance should pair with frontier design, and how computational tools and AI could accelerate a new era of high-performance, highly readable urbanism. 173 - The Hidden Path to Tyranny | Mailyn Salabarria

"You can vote your way into socialism, but you can only shoot your way out. They're never going to leave power." - Timothy Allen sits down with Mailyn Salabarria, a Cuban refugee and liberty advocate, to talk about what “voting with your feet” looks like when it is not a lifestyle choice but a survival move. Mailyn describes leaving Cuba with two suitcases and $200, then having to learn how freedom actually works once she arrived in the US. From there, the conversation gets darker: why Cuba is not “quaint,” how the country is actively disintegrating (hospitals, power, crime, morality), and how the regime sustains itself through censorship, embedded informants, and a tourist-facing propaganda veneer. Mailyn also explains how remittances and “private” businesses still loop back into state control, and why she sees Venezuela as a key pressure point for Cuba’s future. 172 - The Ultimate Exit Strategy | Joe Quirk

"The golden age of voluntarism, anarcho-capitalism has already emerged. It's all over two-thirds of the Earth's surface. It's completely flourishing. It's long since entered its golden age. We've already proved that it works because it emerged naturally on the sea. It's called the cruise ship industry." - Timothy Allen sits down with Joe Quirk, president of The Seasteading Institute, to make the strongest practical case for “exit” as a governance strategy, starting with Sealand and pirate-radio absurdity and ending with a serious blueprint for floating communities that can iterate on rules the way markets iterate on products. They use cruise ships as the key intuition pump: millions of people already live for weeks at sea under private rule-sets with security, dispute resolution, labor hierarchies, and tight logistics, which makes seasteading less sci-fi and more a question of engineering, law, and finance. From there, the conversation digs into what actually blocks seasteads from becoming mainstream: legal classification (not quite a ship, not quite a building), insurance, standards, and the need for designs that feel like livable cities rather than tiny pods for hobbyists. Joe argues seasteads are a “technology” for creating 100,000 competing governance experiments across most of the planet, while Timothy keeps pressing on the realism: what would make this legible, scalable, and resilient against political pushback. 171 - The Truth About Special Economic Zones | Lotta Moberg

"There were probably a lot of brown envelopes on the table involved — they said, okay, have this zone then." - Timothy Allen speaks with economist Lotta Moberg. Lotta, author of the leading academic book on special economic zones, joins the podcast to challenge the conventional wisdom around why zones exist, whether they actually work, and what the popular narrative gets wrong. The conversation opens with Lotta's framework: political economy and public choice theory, which assumes policymakers are self-interested humans, not benevolent optimizers. This lens reshapes how we understand why governments create zones — and why many underperform yet continue to receive funding. She pushes back on the "sandbox" narrative around China's early zones, arguing the origin story was messier and more bottom-up than the neat version usually told. Local businessmen near Hong Kong lobbied corrupt local officials to allow trade — and the central government only endorsed the model years later once results were undeniable. Key takeaways include: privately developed zones consistently outperform government-run ones; failing zones often attract more subsidies rather than being shut down; and the scholarship on 6,000+ zones worldwide remains surprisingly thin. The second half shifts to free cities, wealth management strategy, Bitcoin as property rights in the digital realm, cannabis investing as a case study in maturing industries, and why governance by contract rather than birth may be the most important shift of our generation. Lotta declares herself "a total convert" to the contractual governance model after watching Próspera survive political opposition. 170 - Leaving Europe Is The Rational Choice | Tim Stern

"I want to be back in my tribe. I want to have strong people which I can rely on, which I can do business with, which I know, which have my back and I have theirs. That's exactly what I want to have. And if we are building this place right now, why would I fill it with people I don't know and I don't give a shit about?" - “The whole country is falling apart and nobody gives a shit about it.” - Timothy Allen speaks with Tim Stern, founder of CryptoCity on Margarita Island, Venezuela. Tim explains why more Europeans are treating exit as a practical strategy, not a fantasy: rising tax friction, social instability, and the creeping merge of Digital ID with state money. We talk about why “CryptoCity” is a toxic name for Bitcoiners, what a DAO is actually useful for (crowdfunding businesses and managing shared infrastructure), and why he is building a high-trust community with a hard filter. We also get into the on-the-ground reality: moving earth, building terraces, planning a real port, and the longer-term bet that Latin America buys you time while Europe tightens control. 169 - The First Operational Seasteading Resort: Reef Resort | Mitchell Suchner

"If I can sell someone something to buy, they might buy it. If you can sell someone something that they can live in, they're likely to buy it. If you can sell someone something that they can live in and also generates passive income for them, they're very likely to buy it." A real seasteading resort exists today. Here’s the business model behind it. - Timothy Allen speaks with Mitchell Suchner, founder of ArkPad. Mitchell is building real, operational seasteading infrastructure, including Reef Resort in the Philippines. This episode is the economic case for how floating projects scale into ocean communities: not by ideology first, but by exports, revenue, and industry. We walk through the “seasteading stack” Mitchell sees emerging: aquaculture as early cashflow, tourism as a growth engine, and longer-term ocean industries like mineral extraction from seawater, offshore data infrastructure, and autonomous logistics. The conversation also covers platform stability, storm resilience, maritime flags and jurisdiction, and why distance from political risk can be a strategic advantage. Enjoy the conversation. 168 - Vikram Bharati: At the Intersection of Free Cities & Network States

“The free cities community seems very much more buttoned up and more pragmatic – real estate, free cities, development, SEZs. You need lawyers, you need bankers. And then the network state community, there’s a lot more dreamers, young dreamers who want to do pop-up cities. But there’s a convergence in between where you have a group of people who are a bit of both. And I think that middle group of people are people that are going to do some very interesting things.” - Timothy Allen speaks with Vikram Bharati. Vikram is the founder of Draper Nation, a governance venture lab focused on experimenting with new political and institutional models across both physical and digital realms. Vikram’s background spans venture capital, startup ecosystems, and long-running work with Tim Draper, with a particular focus on digital governance, networked communities, and cloud-based public services. The conversation moves from personal history, including Vikram’s roots in Nagaland and Timothy’s formative experiences across Northeast India, into a broader discussion of tribal governance, decentralization, and how small-scale systems resolve conflict and maintain cohesion. These lived examples become a lens for questioning democracy at scale and exploring why experimentation, rather than reform, is the primary driver of governance improvement. From there, the discussion connects Free Cities and Network States as complementary experiments: Free Cities operating on the ground through real estate, law, and host-state agreements, and Network States operating in the cloud through digital coordination and identity. Drawing on examples from China’s Special Economic Zones, private cities, Bitcoin, and Draper Nation’s digital nation experiments, the episode argues that the most meaningful governance innovation is emerging where physical jurisdictions and cloud-based systems intersect. 167 - Mikkel Thorup: The Global Freedom Map Is Changing

“How do you get out of this? How do you separate yourself from your government today? How do you protect your wealth and your ability to provide for your family today?” - Timothy Allen speaks with Mikkel Thorup. Mikkel is a long-time expat, offshore consultant, and founder of Expat Money. He has spent over 25 years living outside his country of birth, traveled to more than 120 countries, and works directly with families, entrepreneurs, and high earners looking to reduce friction with the systems they live under. What begins with travel stories from Central Asia and reflections on cultural psychology quickly expands into a deeper conversation about freedom, perspective, and trade-offs. Mikkel challenges Western assumptions about liberty, compares overt and hidden forms of control, and argues that many people do not actually want freedom once responsibility enters the picture. From China and the Middle East to Panama and Latin America, the discussion maps where real-world freedom is increasing, where it is quietly disappearing, and why jurisdictions with territorial tax systems and diversified revenue models are becoming magnets for mobile families. Along the way, Mikkel explains why Panama functions as a de facto city-state, how offshore structures really work in practice, and why physical communities matter more than online movements alone. The second half of the conversation moves into harder territory: public education, UBI, loss of purpose, and why meaning, struggle, and family remain central even in a world of optionality. 166 - Christoph Heuermann: You Can Live Tax Free Almost Anywhere

“Why do you need Free Cities if you can live tax-free everywhere?” - Timothy Allen speaks with Christoph Heuermann. Christoph is a perpetual traveler whose company Staatenlos sits at the intersection of global mobility, asset protection, and quiet preparation for uncertainty. What begins with stories of constant movement and remote places quickly turns into a deeper exploration of why some people choose not to anchor themselves to a single country, system, or plan. Without turning it into a how-to guide, the conversation moves through unclaimed territories, unusual experiments in sovereignty, and the lived reality behind concepts like exit, optionality, and Plan B thinking. Heuermann shares observations from years of travel and advising clients, offering glimpses into how families, entrepreneurs, and retirees are responding to tightening rules and rising friction worldwide. The discussion also challenges common assumptions about digital nomads, free cities, and what actually creates resilience, hinting at tensions between online freedom and physical reality. Throughout, the focus stays practical and grounded, more about mindset and trade-offs than hype. NEWS 002 - Venezuela After the Capture of Maduro

In this NEWS episode of the Free Cities Podcast, Timothy Allen summarizes a recent Free Cities Foundation Ambassador call focused on the reported capture of Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro and the rapid signals of reopening that followed. - Drawing on firsthand accounts from Tim Stern, founder of CryptoCity, a residential special economic zone being built on Venezuela's Margarita Island, the discussion traced the immediate shock of the news, followed by a sudden surge in activity. Stern described how real estate inventory on Margarita tightened dramatically within days, with entry-level beachfront apartments disappearing and inbound interest spiking. - He also reported hundreds of new CryptoCity sign-ups in a single day and the return of international flights, including direct routes to Caracas for the first time in roughly 15–20 years, with expectations that flights to Margarita itself would soon follow. - José Cordero, a Venezuelan economist and futurist, framed the moment in national terms, emphasizing that roughly a third of Venezuela’s population, an estimated 8–9 million people, now lives abroad. He argued that despite sensitivities around sovereignty and colonialism, most Venezuelans viewed the intervention positively, seeing it as a break from an armed regime they could not remove themselves. The call explored how legitimacy, relief, and uncertainty coexist during abrupt political transitions. - The conversation examined risks to special economic zones established under the previous regime. Stern explained that CryptoCity had been developed deliberately “by the book,” with extensive legal, environmental, and infrastructure studies, reducing exposure even if formal SEZ designations were revisited. Energy security was also discussed, including Venezuela’s dependence on the Guri hydroelectric system, recent outages, and Margarita’s partial local generation, reinforcing CryptoCity’s decision to pursue independent energy production. - Participants also addressed foreign capital dynamics, particularly Chinese investment in Venezuelan infrastructure and oil, which was characterized as significant but cautious amid shifting U.S. influence. Dollarization was raised as a potential stabilizing outcome following years of hyperinflation. - The call concluded with an update on Honduras from Alex Ugorji, where a delayed and contested election appeared to be resolving in favor of a transition away from socialist governance. While uncertainty remained, the consensus was that negotiated settlements around special economic zones such as Prospera and Ciudad Morazán were increasingly plausible. - Overall, the episode captures a moment of cautious optimism marked by reopening signals, unresolved legitimacy questions, fragile infrastructure, and renewed global attention on special economic zones as tools for navigating political transitions. - DONATE Bitcoin to the Free Cities Podcast: bc1q5jun0nzxzqepch84rqk0jnv0rd8uvns28df7mg - DONATE fiat currency to the Free Cities Podcast: https://buy.stripe.com/5kQ9AT90zeeY5JX7Jv4ow00 - All the Podcast Links: https://linktr.ee/FreeCitiesPodcast Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0 Free Cities Conference: https://freecitiesconference.com/ Free Cities Foundation Newsletter: https://free-cities.org/subscribe - Podcasting apps that support Value 4 Value Bitcoin payments: https://podcastindex.org/apps?appTypes=app

165 - Rahim Taghizadegan: Exit Is More Powerful Than Voice

Bitcoin, Citadel Theory, Geoarbitrage, Capital Mobility, Privacy, Austrian Economics, citadel.garden, Family, Plan B, Private Communities, Optionality, Sovereignty, Free Cities - Timothy Allen speaks with Rahim Taghizadegan. Rahim is an Austrian economist and philosopher, founder of the Scholarium in Vienna, working in the Austrian School tradition on capital theory, entrepreneurship, and why political solutions consistently disappoint. In this episode, he challenges deeply held assumptions about democracy, property, mobility, and what people mistake for security. He argues that freedom is not won through reform or participation, but through exit, optionality, and quiet preparation. The conversation gradually reveals citadel.garden, a deliberately understated network of semi-private, family-oriented refuges, presented less as a utopia and more as insurance for those who see institutional decline coming but prefer not to advertise their response. Seasteading, Floating Cities, Ocean Living, Private Governance, Catamaran Design, Flag Theory, Libertarian Communities, Sovereign Living, LiberArx, Atlas Island, Ocean Builders, Free Cities. - Timothy Allen speaks with Mason. Mason situates seasteading within the Free Cities movement, contrasting projects like the SeaPod from Ocean Builders and the ArkPad by Mitchell Suchner, before introducing LiberArx as a mass-producible, apartment-first floating home designed for comfort, mobility, energy independence, and cost competitiveness with global real estate, rather than traditional sailing performance. He frames LiberArx as a practical bridge toward projects like Atlas Island, arguing that scalable, livable platforms for families, combined with larger floating commercial structures, are a necessary intermediate step toward viable, sovereign seasteading communities. Collectivism, Individualism, Objectivism, Statism, Freedom, Ayn Rand, Free Speech, Entrepreneurship, Reason, Transhumanism, Free Cities, Self-Interest, Liberty, Technology, Philosophy - Timothy Allen speaks with Yaron Brook. Yaron is an Israeli American author and commentator best known as the longtime chairman of the Ayn Rand Institute and a prominent advocate of Objectivism. In this conversation we talk about why the core political divide is, in Yaron's view, collectivism versus individualism rather than left versus right, and how growing statism erodes freedom, reason, and human flourishing. Brook argues that modern politics, technology, and even cultural movements increasingly resemble secular religions demanding sacrifice, while genuine liberty, entrepreneurship, and happiness rest on a clear philosophical defense of individual rights, free will, and rational self-interest, which he sees as essential foundations for projects like Free Cities and for resisting the long-term pull of control, conformity, and decline. 161 - Swen Lorenz: Demography is Destiny

Sark, Free Cities, Flag Theory, Capital Flight, Geo Arbitrage, Investment, Independence, Relocation, Political Risk, Wealth Mobility, Government Failure. - Timothy Allen speaks with Swen Lorenz. Swen is a Sark resident who was at the centre of the recent bid to rejuvenate the island by buying up the flailing Sark property portfolio of the Barclay family. This episode is an update on the current situation in Sark and the wider issue of confidence in government. In this conversation, Swen reflects on Sark as a microcosm of the wider structural pressures facing small jurisdictions and, increasingly, Europe itself. He offers a sober assessment of an island grappling with stagnation, demographic imbalance, and missed opportunities for renewal, including a high-profile investment effort that ultimately failed to materialise. From Sark, the discussion broadens to questions of capital, mobility, and confidence in the future: why people are beginning to move their money, and themselves, how governments respond when that happens, and what it means to think seriously about where, and how, to build a life and a business in an era of growing constraint. NEWS 001 - Updates on the Honduran General Election & ZEDEs

This NEWS episode of the Free Cities Podcast reviews Honduras’s unresolved presidential election, with Nasri Tito Asfura (National Party) seen as the likely winner over Salvador Nasralla (Liberal Party), and the socialist Libre party effectively sidelined. Jorge Colindres and Alex Ugorji agreed that either leading candidate would be favorable to special zones (ZEDEs), with Asfura having stronger institutional support and Nasralla increasingly pro–private sector. Despite legal uncertainty following a Supreme Court ruling, Jorge argued that acquired rights and international treaties—especially the Honduras–Kuwait treaty—protect the ZEDEs, while Alex noted ongoing practical enforcement risks. Both expect a negotiated settlement with the government in 2026, potentially unlocking major investment, and highlighted growing optimism ahead of the Free Cities conference in Prospera next September. - All the Podcast Links: https://linktr.ee/FreeCitiesPodcast Free Cities Telegram Community: https://t.me/+im6c6r4jQkUzMjU0 Free Cities Conference: https://freecitiesconference.com/ Free Cities Foundation Newsletter: https://free-cities.org/subscribe Conference Guide to Prague: https://tinyurl.com/FreeCitiesPragueGuide - DONATE Bitcoin to the Free Cities Podcast: bc1q5jun0nzxzqepch84rqk0jnv0rd8uvns28df7mg - Podcasting apps that support Value 4 Value Bitcoin payments: https://podcastindex.org/apps?appTypes=app - NOSTR: Timothy Allen: npub1gcf9ltaeu42f4tr20z3avkas04dezlx3jaudqsuu87gvmh686xasrvqjg0 Free Cities Foundation: npub1lsj8pmgedqqamt89c27tzjjnlf0wn7q7udjm7j2cl9xxz97eacns2mwpee - LEGACY SOCIAL MEDIA: Timothy Allen: https://twitter.com/MrTimothyAllen Free Cities Foundation: https://twitter.com/freecitiesfound - OTHER LINKS: Veritas Villages: https://www.veritasvillages.com/freecities Free Cities Foundation: https://free-cities.org/ Become a resident or business owner in Próspera: https://prospera.co/r/freecities

160 - Mark Edge: The Freedom to Leave

Free State Project, Libertarianism, Seasteading, City-States, Proprietarianism, Democracy, Privatized Governance, Immigration, Sovereignty, Liberty Movement, Economic Freedom, Silicon Valley Oligarchs. - Timothy Allen speaks with Mark Edge. Mark is an award-winning radio show host, most famously, one half of 'Free Talk Live' the libertarian radio show he hosted out of New Hampshire with Ian Freeman. In this episode we discuss libertarian projects like New Hampshire’s Free State Project, Liberland, and seasteading as ways to build freer societies, with Mark noting the benefits and limits of concentrating like-minded individuals. We explore privatized city-states, billionaire influence, and the flaws of democracy, advocating proprietarianism where owners prioritize citizens’ well-being. Examples like Bill Gates’ farmland illustrate state and elite impact, while libertarian strategy emphasizes autonomy, freedom, and creating spaces where adults can act freely without harming others. BONUS 005 - Timothy Allen: Finding Freedom in an Unfree World

Welcome to this BONUS episode of the Free Cities Podcast. These episodes are exclusively available to our subscribers on Fountain.fm, and I will be releasing them periodically throughout the year. - If you're not on Fountain, you can access the episode here: https://fountain.fm/episode/727p2ykSx85aTmeNbC8N - EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode Timothy Allen is interviewed by Patrick Hiebert, CEO of Veritas Villages. They discuss their parallel journeys from media and entrepreneurship into Bitcoin, free cities, and building freedom-oriented communities. Timothy explains why many Brits are considering relocation: rising taxes, government overreach, hidden financial burdens, declining freedoms, and a growing push toward digital control systems. He expresses concern about the UK's political trajectory, inflation, and public complacency, prompting him to seek better opportunities abroad for his family. The discussion brings up the increasing appeal of geographic arbitrage and communities that reject restrictive or "woke" policies, contrasting the optimism seen in El Salvador with the UK’s stagnation and the shared belief that pursuing freedom remains essential. In this episode, Thomas discusses Liberland’s evolving diplomacy and the nation’s efforts to foster peace and cooperation with its neighbours. He also discusses Croatia’s paradoxical stance, legal hurdles, and the gradual softening of attitudes from local authorities. Beyond borders, Thomas highlights Liberland’s ambition to build a global libertarian community, attract supporters worldwide, and create real-world alternatives such as The Ark, a pioneering community project on the Serbian side of the Danube. The episode also touches on broader themes of economic resilience, self-governance, and the role of free societies in an era of global uncertainty. BONUS 004 - Giacomo Zucco: Governance Innovation Meets Bitcoin

Welcome to bonus episode number 4 of the Free Cities Podcast. These bonus episodes are available exclusively to our subscribers on Fountain.fm, and I’ll be dropping them periodically throughout the year, especially during the weeks when subscribers already have early access to the current main episode. . If you're not on Fountain, you can access the episode here: https://fountain.fm/episode/CznBcyiApWPOqLrYaiZS . Today’s bonus episode is a Plan B Hangout, in which Giacomo Zucco interviews me. According to their website, Plan B Network “Aims to provide the best tools and educational content worldwide, empowering people to regain their sovereignty, from individuals to communities. We are here to help you along your Bitcoin journey.” It’s an educational platform, and Giacomo himself is a bit of a Bitcoin OG, most people in the space know him. I’m currently in the process of writing an educational syllabus for Plan B Network about Free Cities - If you’re listening to this sometime in the future, check out their website at planb.network for the course. Here’s a quick summary of today’s episode so you can decide whether or not to dive in: "In this episode of the Plan B Hangout, Timothy Allen from the Free Cities Foundation discusses the concept of Free Cities, their evolution, and their intersection with Bitcoin and individual freedom. Key topics include the Free Cities Foundation, Prospera in Honduras, competition between governance models, sovereign individuals versus Free Cities, securing a Free City, the relationship between the Free Cities movement and Bitcoin, filtering out scammers and unrealistic projects. And finally, we talk about seasteading." I didn’t know this beforehand, but Giacomo was actually a seasteader back in the day. I might have even rekindled his interest in it. All in all, this should serve as a pretty solid overview of the current Free Cities space and its integration with Bitcoin. Apologies in advance for my croaky voice and occasional shouting; I really need to work on my online interview game… and I will! Enjoy the conversation.

BONUS 003 - Jake Hamilton: Mind, Machines and Meaning

Welcome to this bonus episode of the Free Cities Podcast. These episodes are exclusively available to our subscribers on Fountain.fm, and I will be releasing them periodically throughout the year, especially during weeks when our regular episodes are ones subscribers have already had early access to. . If you're not on Fountain, you can access the episode here: https://fountain.fm/episode/727p2ykSx85aTmeNbC8N . Where should I begin with this one? It is a very long episode—over three and a half hours in total—but as always, there is a reason for that. . A bit of background: in November 2022, I was in San Salvador speaking at Adopting BTC, a Bitcoin conference in El Salvador. At the opening party, I met a gentleman by the name of Jake Hamilton and we had a very interesting late conversation over dinner that struck a chord within me. . Later during the trip, I had a day off and reached out to him to ask if he would sit down and and have a conversation with me. Nothing was off the table; the plan was simply to start talking and see where it went. That is exactly what we did. . We began by discussing Urbit, a decentralized operating system that Jake is a developer for. That was my original reason for wanting to speak with him. However, the conversation quickly branched off into a huge range of topics. . When I edit these podcasts, I usually keep a running list of subjects we cover. By the end, it helps me get a clear picture of what we talked about and makes writing an episode description much easier. For this conversation, that list grew to more than sixty topics. To give you a sense of what you’re in for, we started with Urbit and moved on to digital nomadism, ethics, complex systems, artificial intelligence, the Akashic records, Bitcoin and time, Planck seconds, non-computational quantum physics, metaphysics, the origins of humans, the digital realm, religion, Christianity, simulation theory, the end of humanity, DMT, psychedelics and near-death experiences, fasting, spirituality, ketamine, spirit animals, sugar, proof of work, existential traps, narcissism, StarkNet, the Bitcoin circular economy, Bitcoin maximalism, the philosophy of Bitcoin, Bitcoin as monetary critique, digital aliens, the mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto, Neuralink, conflict, and cultural patrimony. And that is only part of the list. . I even asked an AI to summarize it, and it came back with: “Urbit, Bitcoin, digital nomadism, effective altruism, and various aspects of technology, consciousness, and the future of humanity.” I prefer my own list. . This is exactly the kind of podcast I love to make, and I am very grateful to Jake for agreeing to do it. After all, he was just someone I met at a party. We had never met before, and I have not met him since. Yet he was incredibly generous with his time, sitting down with me for three and a half hours at their Urbit developer house in San Salvador. . I think this episode is a perfect bonus because it is quite technical and especially relevant to the Nostr community, the value-for-value community, and of course, Bitcoiners. It has essentially never been heard. I originally recorded it for a podcast I had just started at the time, but that project went nowhere because I launched this show a few weeks later. So this recording has been sitting untouched for a couple of years, just like the other episodes I will be releasing here. . If you want to follow Jake and hear more of his unique perspectives, you can find him on Twitter at his intriguing handle 36_72541890. He once explained the meaning of that number to me, but I have completely forgotten it, and even ChatGPT cannot figure it out. . Settle in for this one. You may really want to sit back and relax. I hope you enjoy it. I certainly did, and conversations like this are one of the reasons I get up in the morning. . Enjoy.
