    Statins Didn't Cause That.

If you have been hesitant to start a statin or are currently struggling with muscle aches and fatigue, the culprit might not be the medication. In this episode, we break down a massive 2026 clinical review of 23 randomized trials involving over 120,000 patients. The data reveals a staggering reality: the "nocebo effect" —the phenomenon where negative expectations cause real physical symptoms— explains why many attribute non-drug issues to their statin.accounts for nearly all reported symptoms. We translate this complex psychological phenomenon into a roadmap for your heart health.   Later, we dive into new research from the British Journal of Sports Medicine regarding "exercise snacking." While brief bursts of movement are trendy, we look at why "not all steps are created equal" when it comes to cardiorespiratory fitness and long-term metabolic health. Stop the information overload and gain a usable wisdom for navigating family medicine & natural health. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN: • Clinical Truths: Which four side effects are actually linked to statins (and how rare they are). • The Nocebo Effect: How expectation, not pharmacology, drives 93% of statin symptoms. • Exercise Snacking vs. Dedicated Blocks: Why your 5-minute "snack" might be failing your metabolism. • The "Step" Fallacy: Why step count is a secondary metric to exercise intensity. Your Neural Legacy: Rewired

In Episode 096, Joey DiMatteo (PharmD, CCN) digs through two decades of neuroplasticity research to uncover how our internal "mental scripts"—the beliefs we hold about ourselves and our world—are physically wired into our brain architecture. While these patterns are difficult to change as adults, the science reveals a profound window of opportunity in early childhood. We explore how a parent's tone and emotional expression act as a "neural blueprint," physically shaping a child's amygdala and impacting the generations to come. Then, we turn to a pharmacist FAQ. The question "Is it still safe to take this?" is a daily occurrence for Joey. Unfortunately, the answer isn't a simple yes or no. Joey explains the reasons behind expiration dates, and gives a definitive answer on which medications should NEVER be used after expiration. In this episode, we discuss: - The Rewiring Process: How to identify and overwrite the stories we tell ourselves. - The Power of Tone: The specific clinical link between parental expression and a child's neurological development. - The Fatherhood Reflection: A candid look at our own mistakes as fathers and how the science of neuroplasticity offers a path to do better. - Rx Safety Alert: A critical breakdown of the history of expiration dates and the specific medications that become dangerous—not just less effective—after their "use by" date. The Truth About Ultra-Processed Foods

Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs) are currently the primary target of nutritional science, linked by various studies to nearly every major negative health outcome. This wave of research recently led California to become the first state to ban UPFs from school lunches. However, a significant problem remains: there is no universal, clinical definition for what actually constitutes an "ultra-processed" food. In this episode, Dante DiMatteo (PharmD) and Joey DiMatteo (PharmD, CCN) cut through the noise to provide a balanced, evidence-based perspective on the UPF controversy. We move beyond the headlines to answer: - The Definition: What does "ultra-processed" actually mean in a clinical context? - The Nuance: Are there specific UPFs that are safe—or even beneficial? - The Risks: What are the verified physiological dangers of a high-UPF diet? - The Reality: How do socioeconomic factors like poverty and education impact our food choices? Pain Management's Dirty Drug

Tramadol, a drug with more than 16 million U.S. prescriptions last year, is often viewed as the "safer opioid." However, new evidence suggests that perception is not just flawed, but dangerous. Eat Clean, Reduce ADHD

A 2012 study (INCA) that only just came across our desk has huge implications for folks with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), particularly kids! The study was on children, but the implications are universal! FDA Flips: Menopause & HRT

At last, the FDA has decided to remove the black box warning from topical hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) for menopause after years of pushback from women, and a comprehensive scientific review. We look at the original research that lead to the warnings and present evidence for their removal. Women were suffering unnecessarily because good research was mis-applied, and it took two decades for the government to catch on. Next, we look at a study showing that nearly half of type 2 diabetes patients exhibit micronutrient deficiencies, with vitamin D being the most prevalent, followed by magnesium and vitamin B12. We discuss how to assess your individual needs and how to supplement effectively. Finally, heading into Thanksgiving, Josiah helps us refocus and reframe the personality clashes and stress that always come around whenever family gets together. He's pressuring "big pharma", trying to cut out PBM's (Pharmacy Benefits Managers), and restricting how much Medicare and Medicaid will pay. Is it enough? Are these even the right targets? What will all of this mean when picking up a prescription? We dig into the details and take a look at what all of this means for your wallet. Do any medicines help negate those risks? Joey has the details. What's in the Bottle? Creatine Essentials! Creatine has been getting a ton of press lately, and for good reason! While the body makes a limited amount of creatine on its own, nearly everyone can benefit from supplementing with it. The Zero Calcium Score Danger

When a doctor suspects plaque build-up in the arteries and vessels of a patient's heart, a non-invasive CT scan will often be used to detect the presence of calcium. That results are represented as a Calcium Score (Coronary Artery Calcium or CAC).  So if the results come back and you have a low or even zero CAC, you're safe, right? Unfortunately, it's not that easy. Dante has the details based on a listener question. Joey gives us details on a product with a VERY specific use: Prenatal Complete with DHA! Beyond BMI: Redefining Obesity

Is obesity a disease or does it lead to disease? Or is it merely a corollary with disease? What exactly is obesity? Where is the cutoff... and why? With questions like this raging in the medical community and popular-health world, the Lancet pulled together dozens of doctors and scientists to try and bring clarity based on the broadest and most well-established research. What they came up with is both critically important... and difficult to parse for the non-professional.  This episode is extra long, but with obesity (and clinical obesity) comprising the single greatest challenge for Americans and the health of their families, we decided it was worth it! Cancer, Alcohol & Warning Labels

When a listener emails looking for advice on his high cholesterol, Dante draws clear distinctions between what is realistic for supplements to help and what requires the sledgehammer of medicine. Keto and Athletic Performance

Diet trends come and go so quickly that there often isn't enough time for real, hard research to be done on them. This leaves both supporters and detractors making claims based on prior opinion and intuition. When the research does eventually come along, it often gets ignored as everyone has already moved on... but not us! After research and careful consideration, the International Society of Sports Nutrition has released an official position statement on the ketogenic diet and how it effects athletic performance. Even if you don't consider yourself an athlete, their analysis is so well reasoned that it provided an excellent basis for discussing dieting in general as well as keto specifically. Joey DiMatteo gives us a deep-dive on one of our most popular products: Magnesium Essentials! There's a lot more to making an excellent magnesium supplement than meets the eye! Joey explains the different forms, their bio-availability, and the useful place for each of them.
