THE Bob Ironside, possibly one of the only other lead guitarists in history to share a stage with guitar legend David Wilcox who, at the time, had Bob vow to never tell anyone he had, or ELSE! (he would blow up his car!) to which Bob replied, "I don't have a car" "You will" said Wilcox. "You will". THE Bob Ironside, jamming with and friend to the late, great Texan, the One, the Only, Mickey Jones, perfecter of The Texas Shuffle ("If you can't get Mickey Jones, get Jim Keltner. And if you can't get Keltner, call Ringo") DRUMMER Extraordinaire, Dylan's choice of rhythm section for the infamous "ELECTRIC JUDAS" tour of the UK and 1966 masterstroke Blonde On Blonde, BEFORE the motorcycle accident... Or it may have begun August 16, 1983 when a 119 pound Toronto bound Blitz Kid stepped off a train at Union Station and into the skin of a 17 year bleach blonde alternative school educated punk calling himself Damien Emez... Or it may have started years earlier in the 1930s on the unforgiving streets of Depression era Toronto where a sullied homeless boy with holes in his pants never combed his hair... Or it may have started before World War 1 on Thorah Island with Bessie Big Canoe Emes, her husband William (referred to from here on is as Old Man Passmore) and their golden boy Joseph William Preston Passmore, who came into the world with so much promise in 1911, only to perish at the tender age of 7 in 1918 while his father William was fighting overseas in the muddied bombed out trenches of Europe... Thorah island, 60 miles northeast of Toronto, was under strict quarantine at the time due to the global Spanish flu epidemic. Alone with no one to help her, Bessie, our grandmother, was tasked with preparing her son's final resting place and committing his remains to the earth... Years later on her deathbed, Bessie turned to her youngest surviving son, my father, Bill Passmore, and made him vow that the family land on Thorah Island, southeast on Lake Simcoe, two and a half miles west of Beaverton, Ontario, never fall out of family hands... In the 1960s Universities were hotbeds of critical thinking, activism, higher learning and radical politics. Today most comedians won't go near them. Why? The New Left has gone so far left they are now the extreme right.  The New Left does not support Freedom of Speech The New Left does not support Freedom of Assembly Anyone disagreeing with the New Left is immediately branded a Hate Monger, A Racist, A Bigot or worse... The New Left promotes Bully Culture. Mob Culture. And Cancel Culture... Us Human Beings are social animals by nature. Historically, the worst form of human punishment, more feared then death perhaps, is banishment. Abandonment. P is the NEW Scarlet Letter. P for Pariah... Canadian, Prince Edward Island actor, writer, performer, humorist, comedian Dennis Trainer sold out 5 shows in the past six years. Everything's rosy. Until... Suddenly a gig that had been booked for months was CANCELED. After hanging up on a confused Dennis, the venue's owner stopped returning his phone calls. Radio silence. Ghosted. No reason given. This is the same owner whose local "record store" hosted an event barring members of the public based on their gender, race and sexual orientation, all in the name of "Inclusion" (yea, we had to do a double take on that one too. Irony's a bitch). As previously stated, this Gen X kid was raised in the shadow of the Civil Rights Movement, tirelessly fighting AGAINST racism... This Gen X kid was raised in the shadow of the bra burning feminist movement, tirelessly fighting AGAINST sexism... This Gen X kid was raised in the shadow of the burgeoning Gay Pride movement, tirelessly fighting AGAINST any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation... The New Left is clawing back these societal gains born out of the radicalism and activism of the 1960s... And we've got something to say about that. And boobies too. Noted British vocalist and crooner Al Bowly recorded one of the earliest versions of the song the year after it was composed in 1935   1953 Money Honey was written by one of Rock N Roll's original pioneers, Jesse Stone. Originally released in September 1953, it was the first single ever by legendary vocalist Clyde McPhatter and backed for the first time by the newly formed Drifters.   1962 Bob Dylan wrote and demoed the song Tomorrow Is A Long Time in 1962. Most notably, Elvis Presley recorded the song in 1966, intended for the soundtrack of his film Spinout of the same year. Dylan has stated repeatedly that Elvis' cover of this song is the one he treasures the most. 20 years after it was written, Elvis' version would feature prominently in acclaimed American film director Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film of S.E. On August 25, 1955, the El Paso Times reported the death of painter Alvin Krolik under the headline "Story Of Person Who Walked Lonely Street". Krolik himself had penned the line in his unpublished autobiography prior to being shot and killed by local police during an attempted robbery in El Paso, Texas. And so a legend was born... Join us this week in the GXO Podcast as The Generation X Offender retraces the footsteps of budding middle-aged songwriter Mae Boren-Axton, Mom to Hoyt (an accomplished songwriter in his own write a decade later) as she monitors the mania being spread by a hip swiveling, skinny kid from Tupelo as he seduces legions of eager young fans from the stage while simultaneously enraging the boyfriends who accompany them All this and more in the latest installment of the GXO Podcast celebrating 70 years of Rock N Roll (1956-2026)   *THE MUSIC 25 year old, Oklahoma born Hoyt Axton, son of Texas born composer Mae Boren-Axton, writes "The Pusher" in 1963. Four years later on May 14, 1967, ground zero for the Summer of Love, Canadian/American, Los Angeles based psychedelic rock band Steppenwolf record their first version of The Pusher live at the Matrix club in San Francisco. The band would go onto re-record the song for their self titled debut album, released January 29, 1968, which would reach number six on Billboard's Album Chart. The album's lead single, "Born To Be Wild" would peak at number two on Billboard's Hot 100 Songs Chart. Both "The Pusher" and "Born To Be Wild" would be included in the 1969 landmark counterculture film Easy Rider the following year.   "No No Song" was recorded by Beatle Ringo Starr in late 1974 and released the following year. With a little help from his friends Harry Nilsson on backing vocals, Jesse Ed Davis on electric guitar, Rolling Stones alumni Bobby Keys on sax and Nicky Hopkins on piano, Klaus Voormann from The Beatles' Hamburg days on bass, No No Song went #1 on the US Cash Box Top 100 Chart, #1 in Canada and #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. To date, No No Song is Ringo Starr's 7th and last Top 10 hit.   "Milkcow Blues Boogie" was originally written and recorded by Kokomo Arnold in 1934 as Milk Cow Blues. The song made Arnold a star and was widely adapted by blues artists as well as Western Swing musicians. Elvis Presley released the song as the A side of his 3rd 45 single for Sun Records on January 8, 1955. After securing the rights to Presley's contract, RCA Records re-issued the song later the same year in December 1955, later including it on Elvis' 1959 album A Date With Elvis.   "Heartbreak Hotel" was written by Mae Boren-Axton and Tommy Durden. The song was recorded at RCA Victor January 10, 1956 at 1525 McGavock Street in Nashville and released January 27, 1956. Our tale begins in the mid to late 40s... The 1940s Post War America The Great Cities of the East are full of electricity and light And music... Swing beat is DEAD daddio Bebop and Blues rule! Jump Swing Shout Blues   ...but this new thing, as yet, remains undefined   Founded in 1894 (solely sheet music back then kids!) Billboard Magazine didn't know what to do with it or what to call it either...   Although the area of Harlem, situated within the borough of New York City known as Manhattan, only takes up approximately 1.4 square miles (as reported by the New York City Department of City Planning in March of 2019) Billboard Magazine, began publishing a music chart directed towards the entire African American customer base of the United States in 1942.   They called this chart The Harlem Hit Parade.   Close to 50 years after the publication's inception, Billboard Magazine decided the African American music consuming demographic mattered, or rather, their money mattered (cue Randy Newman "It's Money That Matters").   Three short years later, Billboard changed the name of the chart to "The Most Played Juke Box Race Records" followed by "Best Selling Retail Race Records" in 1948. These unfortunate (and possibly even hateful) labels used to categorize a type of music are literally, the very definition of racist (look it up).   While some historians suggest the term "race" was a self referential term used by African Americans in the early part of the 20th Century, the word came to be considered offensive in the post-war world.   This prompted the editorial staff of Billboard Magazine to rename the chart "Rhythm & Blues Chart Listings" in June of 1949...   ...which is where our story begins   As this exciting new music slithered out of the primordial sludge of post War rhythm and blues, something MAGICAL happened...   Previously imposed barriers between people gradually, over time, began to shift and erode. MORE! MORE! Generations in the making, Rock N Roll officially became part of the cultural zeitgeist in 1956, the first year this perpetually evolving NEW MUSIC produced the most popular song of the year. Rock N Rollers Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers, Bill Haley And The Comets, vocal group The Platters, Johnny Ray and British skiffle sensation Lonnie Donegan were also present in the Top 50 Year End Singles Chart of 1956. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROCK N ROLL! 1956 - 2026 70 Years of Maximum Rock N Roll!   Years in the making, Rock N Roll officially became part of the cultural zeitgeist in 1956, the first year this perpetually evolving NEW MUSIC produced the most popular song of the year, Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis Presley. Fellow Rock N Rollers Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers, Bill Haley And The Comets, vocal group The Platters and British skiffle sensation Lonnie Donegan were also present in the Top 50 Year End Singles Chart of 1956. This had never happened before in the history of recorded music... From that point on, Rock N Roll instantly took over the charts, becoming the most dominant genre of popular music for the next 40 plus years. To celebrate this milestone. Tanner Burns Is Bringing Crooning Back! But what, might you ask, is Crooning? Crooning is a smooth, intimate style of singing that originated in the 1920s. The crooning style was made possible by widespread access to electricity and improvements made to microphones that picked up quieter sounds and a wider range of frequencies than ever before. This dominant popular vocal style coincided with the advent of radio broadcasting and electrical recording. Before widespread use of microphones, singers had to project their voices to the very back of the theater, making for a loud vocal style. Microphones made quieter, more personal, intimate singing possible. Historians believe the suggestion of intimacy in song was wildly attractive to women at the time, especially within the youth subculture known as bobby soxers. The crooning style developed quickly among singers who performed with big bands, reaching its height by the 1940s through to the late 1960s. Al Bowlly and Bing Crosby are often credited with inventing the crooning style, but it was Rudy Vallée who brought about its widespread popularity. From 1929 through to 1939, his highly rated radio program beamed in the sophistication of an exquisite New York City night club, where Vallée stood like a statue, surrounded by handsome, clean-cut collegiate band musicians, sensually cradling a saxophone in his arms. Vallée's first film, The Vagabond Lover, was promoted with the tagline, “Men Hate Him! Women Love Him!" while his success brought press warnings of “this punk from Maine, Vallée, with the dripping voice, required mounted police to beat back crowds of screaming and swooning females". But that was then. This is now. And by now, we mean Tanner Burns now. Prince Edward Island’s darling of the opera set, Burns has turned his gaze towards Crooning and bringing it back! The record went Number One topping the Billboard charts, selling over a million copies compared to the 8,000 sold when originally released. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and eventually replaced by the Silent Night Chapel in 1924. Stille Nacht was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1818, at Saint Nicholas Church, the parish church of Oberndorf bei Salzburg in the Austrian province of Salzburg. The record was issued by Victor in the USA and His Master's Voice in Europe in 1913. American tenor and actor, Mario Lanza (1921-1959) the first artist to sell two and a half million albums, sang the song when playing Enrico Caruso in the 1951 biopic The Great Caruso, when he was just 30 years old. Lanza would go on to record the song for RCA Victor. His version peaked in the Top 20 Singles at No. 16. Cooke first performed " A Change Is Gonna Come" on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson on February 7, 1964. Cooke initially objected to performing the song that evening on Carson when prompted to by his manager Allen Klein. Cooke noted that the album's release was still one month away and that he had no time to pull together an arrangement within such a short time frame. Klein arranged for RCA to pay for a full string section and Cooke performed the song that Friday on The Tonight Show. Sadly the network did not save the the tape of the performance. Cooke's appearance on Carson that night was overshadowed by The Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan Show just two days later. The song was issued March 1, 1964 as a track on what would be Cooke's final studio album Ain't That Good News. It would not be issued as a single for another nine months, following Cooke's murder. Cooke elected never to perform the song ever again following its one and only performance on The Tonight Show, both because of the complexity of the arrangement and also because of the ominous nature of the song.  On December 11, 1964, two weeks before the single was releases, Sam Cooke was fatally shot at the Hacienda Motel at 91st and South Figueroa streets, 9141 South Figueroa Street in South Central Los Angeles, California.   *Little Flame by Carsie Blanton https://music.apple.com/ca/album/the-little-flame-single/1854904398 released December 5, 2025. Warren Zevon began life the son of "Stumpy" Zevon, a Jewish immigrant born William Zivotofsky in the Ukraine before changing it to Zevon. To feed his family Zevon worked as a bookie handling volume bets and dice games for notorious Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen. Zevon ended up working for years in Cohen's gang and was best man at Cohen's wedding. Stumpy's son Warren, once student to the legendary, world renowned classical composer Igor Stravinsky, turned professional musician, singer, songwriter while still in high school, forming a duo whose first single, produced by Bones Howe, reached number 65 on Billboards Pop Chart in April 1966. No bad for a first timer! Soon afterwards, Zevon's parents divorced. He quit high school and, driving a sports car his gangster father won in a card game, moved from Los Angeles to New York to become a folk singer. And so begins the 55 year odyssey from the release of his ironically titled 1970 debut album Wanted Dead Or Alive to his posthumous induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025.  Join us, along with David Letterman and the man himself, as we retrace the steps of his journey from Stumpy Zevon's kid to Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductee. Todd Snider (1966-2025) At the tender young age of just 59 short, well lived years, master tunesmith, storyteller, folksinger, barefoot hippie Todd Daniel Snider passed away at his home in East Nashville, Tennessee, of an undiagnosed case of walking pneumonia aggravated by injuries sustained during an assault on his person in Utah. Snider's medical conditioned worsened after police refused to take him to hospital following the assault, a condition made even worse by a night in jail after Snider protested his conceived premature discharge from hospital. In this episode, we hear from Todd himself, on mortality, songwriting, trying to get it right and how he lived his life Todd is joined by beloved friends and neighbors... Predeceased by both his heroes Jerry Jeff Walker and John Prine, Todd was at one time signed to Prine's Oh Boy Records after initially working for him as a runner while Prine recorded his 1991 album The Missing Years Grammy nominated collaborator and one time ward Aaron Lee Tasjan (one of Sir Elton John's favourites). There's alotta water under the bridge between Tasjan and Todd who enjoyed a near 20 year friendship. After being asked to leave, a visibly upset Snider returned to the hospital to air his grievances. Cops were called and Snider was arrested, spending the night in jail.  Since his release from jail, Snider has not been seen or heard from. A hastily written statement from his record company has only added mystery to this already disturbing tale.
