How to Connect With a Teenager Who Has Shut You Out
If your teenager has completely shut you out, reconnecting starts with getting on their turf, not with another lecture.I'm Dr. Suzanne Simpson, and after thirty years working with teenagers, including five and a half years inside a youth psychiatric unit, here is what I know for certain: you cannot influence a child you do not connect with.In this episode, I break down how to reconnect with your teenager, starting with what most parents get wrong first, what taking initiative actually looks like, and why listening well matters more than having the right words.I spent a year asking twenty-five teenagers in a psychiatric unit what they needed most. It came down to this: they want to be pursued, not fixed.0:00 When your teenager shuts you out 0:47 What do they want to do 1:09 Where do they want to be 1:50 How are they feeling 2:31 The core parenting shift 2:59 What this is not 3:50 What 25 teenagers in a psychiatric unit taught me 4:48 Making time, even when it is hard 5:48 3 ways parents stop listening 7:24 Practical ways to show up 8:12 What happens when you get on their turf 10:11 You do not have to be perfectFind my interview playlist on YouTube Dr Suzanne Simpson, at Get On Their Turf:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC8JprFdrPA&list=PLi7xFsX7h7tdxBsVx38UIRVrvnCc_9IBWNew releases every second Monday 8:00 am PST.👉 Get the free guide "8 Ways to Get on Your Kids' Turf" at www.drsuzannesimpson.comConnect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsuzannesimpson/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drsuzannesimpson/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drsuzannesimpson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61566148964209Please note that the contents of this website are not a substitute for professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Why the Teen Mental Health System Fails and How to Help Anyway
Is your teenager is struggling, and are you done waiting for a broken system to catch up?In this episode, I sit down with Chris Coulter, a father who lost his 14-year-old daughter Maddie to suicide in 2015. Chris learned the hard way where the public mental health system failed his family, and turned that knowledge into action. He built MindGrade to hold schools accountable for student mental health, and MentorWell to give teenagers the kind of consistent adult presence many of them are missing. We talk about the early signs that show my teenager needs help, signs that are easy to explain away as normal teenage behaviour, why remediation without prevention keeps failing families, and a statistic that should stop every parent in their tracks: nearly a third of teenagers say they have no one to talk to. Chris also shares what actually rebuilt trust with his own teenagers, and how he learned to get a teenager to open up by offering presence instead of pressure. You do not have to wait for a system to step in. My Teenager Is Failing: The Truth About Building Resilience
Has a failing grade ever made you want to step in and fix everything? That instinct comes from love, but it may be quietly taking a brick out of the foundation of your teenager's confidence. In this episode, I share three things parents do when a teenager is failing that actually make things worse, and the better response for each one. I start with a real story: a friend whose son was failing a high-level math class and my one question that changed what she did next.A failing grade is not a verdict. It is a signal. My research found that teenagers have a deep desire to succeed, and when we rescue them from failure, we rob them of the one thing that actually builds self-worth: knowing they did it themselves.I also look at Jonathan Haidt's work on the anxious generation and why children need challenge and stress to become anti-fragile. And I walk through the shame distinction that changes everything: there is a world of difference between "I am a mistake" and "I made a mistake."I close with the one question that reframes how we see our teenager's struggles entirely. Because you cannot build resilience in a child you are too afraid to let struggle.👉 Get my free guide "8 Ways to Get on Your Kids' Turf" at drsuzannesimpson.comFind my interview playlist on YouTube Dr Suzanne Simpson, at Get On Their Turf:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC8JprFdrPA&list=PLi7xFsX7h7tdxBsVx38UIRVrvnCc_9IBWNew releases every second Monday 8:00 am PST.👉 Get the free guide "8 Ways to Get on Your Kids' Turf" at www.drsuzannesimpson.comConnect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsuzannesimpson/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drsuzannesimpson/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drsuzannesimpson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61566148964209Please note that the contents of this website are not a substitute for professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment. How to Talk to Your Teenager About Screens Without Starting a Fight
When your teenager won't put the phone down, the fight that follows is rarely really about the phone. In this episode, I walk you through what is actually driving your teenager's resistance, why leading with rules alone makes it worse, and the shift that changes everything: moving from a control mindset to a connection mindset.I have spent 30 years working with teenagers, including five years inside a youth psychiatric unit. What I saw over and over again is that the teens who struggled most with boundaries were not defiant. They were disconnected. And the parents who found their way back to influence were not the ones with the strictest rules. They were the ones who got regulated first. What we cover in this episode:· Why unplugging feels like a genuine threat to your teenager's sense of belonging · How to set firm digital boundaries without damaging the relationship in the process · Why your calm, regulated presence is more powerful than any rule, consequence, or app blocker · The three steps that move you out of the power struggle and into real influenceYou don't need all the answers to the ever-changing digital world. The Mask of "Fine": Cea Sunrise Person on Why Teens Hide the Truth
When your teenager says "I'm fine" but your gut tells you otherwise, you aren't imagining it.In this episode, Dr. Suzanne Simpson sits down with Cea Sunrise Person, bestselling author of North of Normal and Nearly Normal, to talk about the "mask" - the survival strategy many kids use to hide a chaotic or painful home life from the adults around them.Cea grew up off-the-grid in a teepee, moved to a city at 13, and became a high-fashion model in Europe. Behind that success was a child who had become a master at performing "normal" to keep her secrets safe. Her story is one parents and educators need to hear.In this conversation:Why the "good girl" who never causes trouble is often carrying the mostHow social media trains today's teens to perform and hide every single dayWarning signs: extreme people-pleasing and not wanting to go homeHow to respond when your child says "I'm fine" and you know they aren'tThe power of being a "sponge" for your child's pain instead of trying to fix itA key takeaway from this episode: kids don't struggle in adult life because they went through trauma as children. They struggle because they went through it alone.Find my interview playlist on YouTube Dr Suzanne Simpson, at Get On Their Turf:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC8JprFdrPA&list=PLi7xFsX7h7tdxBsVx38UIRVrvnCc_9IBWNew releases every second Monday 8:00 am PST.👉 Get the free guide "8 Ways to Get on Your Kids' Turf" at www.drsuzannesimpson.comConnect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsuzannesimpson/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drsuzannesimpson/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drsuzannesimpson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61566148964209Please note that the contents of this website are not a substitute for professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment. What Teens Actually Need When They Misbehave (It's Not Punishment)
What do teens actually need when they misbehave? If you have been stuck between being too harsh and too soft, this episode will shift your thinking entirely. In this episode of Get on Their Turf, I share five discoveries from my research on teen behaviour and emotional regulation that completely changed how I think about guiding teenagers. What surprised me most: it wasn't the kids who struggled with the concept of discipline. It was the adults.I spoke with young people from classrooms to a youth psychiatric unit, and not one of them defined discipline as punishment. They defined it as preparation. They wanted guidance, not control. And they wanted the adults in their lives to teach them how to regulate themselves, not just correct them when they got it wrong. Here is what you will learn in this episode:Why teens have fewer negative associations with discipline than most parents expectWhat teens actually said they need when they misbehaveWhy connection before correction determines whether your guidance lands or tears them downWhat a meta-analysis of 150 studies found about emotional regulation and adult outcomesThe one question to ask yourself before you respond to your teen's misbehaviourTeaching teens emotional regulation is not a soft approach to parenting. Just Me: 5 Hidden Anxiety Signs Parents Miss (And How to Respond with Compassion)
Is your child calm on the outside but quietly struggling on the inside? What if the behaviours you're calling defiance are actually hidden anxiety?Anxiety doesn't always look the way we expect. Many children and teens appear capable and "fine" while silently battling overwhelming fear. When anxiety is misunderstood, adults often respond with frustration instead of empathy. In this episode, I share five powerful lessons learned through parenting, teaching, and years of working with youth mental health. I explain why anxiety is often hidden, deeply misunderstood, and sometimes expressed physically rather than verbally, and how recognizing the signs can completely change the way we support our children. We talk about:Why anxiety is often misunderstood unless you've experienced itHow teens mask anxiety to appear "normal"The genetic and physical signs adults frequently missThe difference between healthy fear and debilitating anxietyWhen we understand anxiety better, we stop judging behaviour and start responding with compassion, clarity, and support. Are you afraid to set boundaries because you don't want to damage them? The Power of Seeing Differently: A Conversation with Daoud Kuttab on Truth, Media, and Perspective#drsuzannesimpson #encounteringpodcast #getontheirturf We all see the world through a lens—but what if we don’t even know we’re looking through one?In this powerful episode of Encountering, I speak with award-winning Palestinian-American journalist Daoud Kuttab about the urgent need to recognize that there are different ways of seeing—and how our assumptions, biases, and blind spots can shape (and misshape) the truth. From his early days reporting in the West Bank to his detention for exposing corruption, Daoud has devoted his life to telling authentic stories from the Arab world—especially the stories Western audiences rarely hear. We explore the cultural contrasts between Western individualism and Arab communal values, how media filters impact global perception, and why the key to real understanding is listening to people tell their own stories. This conversation isn’t just about journalism—it’s about parenting, empathy, connection, and teaching the next generation to think beyond their default lens.In this episode, you will learn:• How culture shapes the way we define truth, freedom, and identity• What most Western media leaves out about Gaza and Palestinian life• Why stereotypes thrive in the absence of direct voices• How honor and shame shape Arab family dynamics• Why social media is shifting global awareness—especially for young people• How parents can help kids grow up with curiosity and cultural humility⏱️ Chapters00:00 We don’t even know what we don’t know: Changing your lens01:05 Meet Daoud Kuttab: Palestinian-American journalist and bridge-builder02:45 Speaking truth to power—what real journalism looks like06:00 Interviewing Yasser Arafat and being detained for asking hard questions09:30 What journalists owe the public: Integrity over comfort13:00 East vs. West: Individual rights vs. family and community15:30 Honor, shame, and cultural identity in Arab society19:30 How 9/11 reshaped Western views of Arabs and Muslims24:35 Understanding Gaza: The history you won’t see on the news27:45 The media blackout: Why Western journalists are barred from Gaza30:50 The rise of social media as a tool for truth and direct voices34:00 Seeing people, not headlines: How to start shifting your perspectiveFind my interview playlist on YouTube Dr Suzanne Simpson, at Get On Their Turf:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC8JprFdrPA&list=PLi7xFsX7h7tdxBsVx38UIRVrvnCc_9IBWNew releases every second Monday 8:00 am PST.👉 Get the free guide "8 Ways to Get on Your Kids' Turf" at www.drsuzannesimpson.comConnect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsuzannesimpson/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drsuzannesimpson/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drsuzannesimpson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61566148964209Please note that the contents of this website are not a substitute for professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
