Despite their skill and experience, they still have a caddy, a person who gives advice and insight as to how to make the best approach for the next shot. Do you remember what it was like to play with a jump rope as a kid? One friend is on either end of the rope, swinging it round and round. When a marketing team develops a catchy jingle in an advertisement, it can stay with you forever. Although familiarity can be helpful in advertising, when we become too familiar with aspects of the Bible, we can lose the beauty and wonder that’s inside. In different context, the same word can mean two very different things. For example, when God describes Himself as our heavenly father, that can be a point of great celebration if you’ve had a good earthly father. In school, when a student has a year without any absences, they can be recognized for their perfect attendance. That recognition, however, is not a reflection of their test scores or the quality of their homework. God is looking to use those who are faithful. When a person becomes very famous, we can become familiar with their works, be it music, acting, or social media. However, just because we are familiar with the work they’ve done and the great things they’ve accomplished doesn’t mean we know them personally. When pilots are learning to fly an aircraft, they’re taught to always trust their instruments. When the weather’s good and the skies are fair, clear visibility makes knowing your position much easier. When the weather’s stormy and visibility is poor, those instruments can mean the difference between a safe landing and a crash landing. When someone has a favourite sports team, their devotion is unrelenting. Through wins and losses, trades and draft picks, their allegiance to the team colours remains unwavering. One major factor that comes between us getting what we want most in life is fear, fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of others. Day after day we’re told to want more, which usually translates to more stuff. Well believe it or not, we serve a God who wants to give us more, but the more that God offers might now be what we expect. Winter driving is often not very fun, and if you’re driving a small car with summer tires, icy roads are that much scarier. A parked car that sits idling will have all of the electronics running, including heat and air conditioning. It’s not until you put that car into drive that you really start to experience its power. When kids are playing sports, be it hockey or soccer, they can’t play unless they’re wearing all of their equipment. As Christians, we need to ensure that we’re equipped to do the good work God has called us to and that will be impossible without His word. An actor who works on a medical drama needs to routinely rehearse and recite complex medical terminology. However, just because they can recite these terms, it  doesn’t give them understanding of their true meaning. There’s a significant difference between knowing someone and knowing of someone. When you know of someone, you know their name and surface information about their life. When you know someone, you know them at their highs and their lows, the sound of their laugh and the sound of their cry. When God calls us, He calls us by name. To someone who’s never seen a buffet at a wedding before, it could look like a chaotic free-for-all to go and grab food.  It isn’t until you experience it that you realize it’s meant to operate with order. If someone from Europe came to Canada and landed in Prince Edward Island, they could say that they’ve been to Canada. Even though they’ve been here, we know there would be so much more to discover. If you’re planning a new exercise routine that’s based on your excitement to workout without any knowledge of what you’re doing, you could get injured. If you had all the knowledge of proper lifting technique but no drive to workout, you won’t see any results. Both the passion and knowledge need to come together to see positive change.
