How Survival Mode Turned Into Control Issues
I sat down intending to talk about control, but as often happens, God took the conversation deeper than I expected. For years, I thought I had control issues. What I'm realizing now is that many of those behaviors weren't really about control at all. They started as survival skills. Somewhere along the way, I learned to anticipate problems, protect myself, prepare for worst-case scenarios, and carry responsibilities that were never meant to be mine. Those patterns helped me survive difficult seasons, but God has been gently showing me that I don't have to live there anymore. In this vulnerable and unedited conversation, I share pieces of my own healing journey, childhood wounds, unhealthy coping mechanisms, anxiety, self-protection, and the freedom that comes when we begin to surrender the things we've been carrying for far too long. We also talk about: • Why control often starts as a survival skill • Childhood wounds and the coping mechanisms we develop • The hidden burden of trying to protect everyone around us • How survival mode can quietly become a way of life • The difference between surviving and surrendering • What God has been teaching me about trust, healing, and letting go • Why some of the things that once protected us may be the very things God is asking us to release • The freedom that comes when we stop carrying what was never ours to carry Friend, maybe you're not controlling because you want power. Maybe you're controlling because you learned it's the only way to survive. Maybe, it's now just a coping mechanism that turned into a habit. And maybe God is inviting you into something different. Maybe He's inviting you to put down the things you've been carrying and trust Him with what comes next. The Marriage Wake-Up Call I Didn't Expect
Have you ever felt like something was off, but you couldn't quite put your finger on it? That's where I found myself recently. A quick note: Several of you have reached out to say the unedited episodes feel like we're just sitting down having coffee together. So that's exactly what this is. Raw, real, and unscripted. After months of feeling like something was out of alignment, I asked God to show me what it was. I expected Him to point to my schedule, my business, or one of the many other things on my plate. Instead, He pointed me toward my marriage. In this honest and vulnerable episode, I'm sharing what happened when God answered that prayer, the unexpected lessons He revealed, and why the areas we often overlook can become the very places He wants to bring healing, growth, and alignment. While much of this conversation centers around marriage, the bigger invitation is for all of us to ask: Is there an area of my life that God may be calling me to pay attention to? You'll hear how God used a canceled hair appointment, a leadership event, a timely conversation with a true friend, and even a marriage coach to reveal some blind spots I couldn't see on my own. Because sometimes the area God wants to work on isn't the area we think needs fixing. Key Takeaways How God revealed an area of my life that was out of alignment The unexpected connection between a canceled hair appointment and a prayer I'd been praying The question that completely shifted my perspective Why I decided to work with a marriage coach Small changes that are already making a big difference The danger of focusing on what others aren't doing instead of examining our own hearts How to recognize areas God may be asking you to address Why God doesn't call us to settle for mediocrity in any area of our lives A Few Questions to Reflect On Is there an area of your life that feels out of alignment right now? Have you been asking God to change someone else when He may be inviting you to look inward first? What strengths and blessings have you overlooked because you've been focused on what's missing? What is one small step of obedience God may be asking you to take today? Ways to Connect with Melissa Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or distracted? Is Overthinking Why You’re Always So Tired?
How often do you try to self-protect? Or manage the people around you so you can protect them? Or hesitate to do what you feel called to do because you don’t want to mess it up… or make God look bad? A behind-the-scenes and unpolished look at what God is showing me about overthinking, misalignment, and delayed obedience… and why I’ve been so tired lately. SPOILER ALERT: It's probably why you are so tired also! Sometimes, God doesn’t call us to do His work. 😉 Just a hint at where we’re going today. If you’ve been stuck in your head, trying to get it right before you move, this one is for you. We’re talking about where that comes from, what Matthew 11:2–30 really means when He says His burden is light, and how to take one simple step forward instead of overthinking your way out of it.

Learning to trust God when it doesn't make sense
Dear listener, Even for me, as someone who really loves to overshare, this episode is far beyond my comfort zone when it comes to honesty and transparency. I have sat on this episode for at least a week. And, as much as I wanted to edit it, make it pretty, and delete about 15 minutes of what I would consider over-sharing, I strongly sensed the Lord telling me to publish as is. The Lord wastes nothing. As I continue to follow Him and hear His voice tell me to do things differently than I've ever considered doing before... I will trust Him. I pray that my doubts, tears, questions, worries, and ramblings meet you exactly where you are and that you will be able to glean from this behind-the-scenes look at what's been going on in my world over the last year. I pray it comforts you. I pray that it challenges you. And I pray it provides enough light to help you make it at least one more baby step further into your own personal journey with the Lord. He is good. He provides. He is always faithful. And, He loves you more than you can imagine. ❤️ An inside, messy, look at what it looks like to trust God and say YES to the things He brings to our attention. A heartfelt conversation about having a posture of surrender and walking out the things the Lord has for us, even when it doesn't make sense.

Mental Health & ADHD: A New Year Pep Talk for Getting Back Into Your Routine
If the new year has arrived and you already feel scattered, off-rhythm, or unsure how to get back into your routine, this episode is for you. In this honest, gentle pep talk, Melissa shares openly about the struggle of getting back into healthy rhythms, especially for those with ADHD. This isn’t about productivity, discipline, or starting strong. It’s about awareness, grace, and learning how to show up again when routine has been disrupted and there’s no external accountability pushing you forward. Melissa talks about why shifting focus can feel so hard with ADHD, why this isn’t a personal failure, and how staying loosely connected to healthy habits during rest can make re-entry gentler. She also shares what helps her ease back into routine after extended breaks, without shame or pressure. If you’ve been feeling behind, overwhelmed, or frustrated with yourself for not “bouncing back” faster, this episode will remind you that you’re not broken, you’re human, and God meets you right where you are. ✨ Key Takeaways Why getting back into routine can feel especially hard for those with ADHD The difference between awareness and excuse, and how naming the struggle removes shame Why self-directed follow-through is often harder when there’s no external accountability How routines support the ADHD brain and help create a sense of safety and grounding Why staying loosely connected to healthy habits during rest or vacation matters Simple ways to ease back into rhythm without comparing where you are to where you left off A gentle reminder that something is better than nothing, and showing up matters more than catching up 🤍 Next Steps & Support If the new year already feels overwhelming and you need help rebuilding healthy rhythms, the 12-Week Reset is available to support you step by step. The Mistake You’re Making with Healthy Habits: Why You’re Exhausted and Feel Like You’re Failing
In this episode of God-Sized Dreams, we’re talking honestly about why healthy habits keep feeling hard — and why so many women walk into a new year already feeling behind, exhausted, and like they’re failing before they even start. If you’ve ever told yourself, “This is the year I’m finally going to get consistent,” but felt overwhelmed just thinking about it, this conversation is for you. Here’s the truth most people won’t tell you: Healthy habits aren’t failing because you lack discipline. They aren’t sticking because you’re trying to add them onto a life that’s already overloaded. Melissa breaks down the one mistake she sees over and over again with high-achieving, faith-filled women — especially those who care deeply, try hard, and still feel like it’s never enough. This episode reframes the idea of failure, explains why this isn’t a willpower issue, and introduces a gentler, God-led approach to building rhythms that actually fit your real life. If you’re tired of starting over every January, wrestling with exhaustion, or wondering why doing “all the right things” still leaves you drained, this episode will help you slow down, breathe, and take your next baby step forward with clarity and grace. Key Takeaways Why healthy habits aren’t sticking — and why it’s not a discipline problem The difference between effort and capacity, especially for overachievers How performance can quietly become a coping mechanism Why undoing is wisdom, not quitting, and how God often asks us to let go before adding more A simple baby step to help you reclaim time, energy, and peace without adding another thing to your plate Your Baby Step This Week Instead of trying to add a new healthy habit, choose one thing to undo: one commitment to pause, one app to mute, one expectation to loosen, or one boundary to reinforce. Only after creating space do you consider what might be added back in a healthier way. Ready for Support? You don’t have to figure this out alone — and you don’t have to know the “right” next step either. Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work (And the Goal-Setting Approach That Actually Works)
New Year’s resolutions sound good… until real life hits. If you’ve ever started the year feeling motivated, only to feel discouraged, behind, or like you’re failing a few weeks later, this episode is for you. In this conversation, Melissa breaks down why traditional New Year’s resolutions so often fall apart, especially for high-achieving women who already feel overwhelmed. She explains why most goal setting fails, not because of a lack of desire or discipline, but because there’s no clear plan that supports real life. Instead of planning an entire year at once, Melissa shares a more sustainable, faith-led approach to goal setting using shorter seasons, reflection, and clarity. She walks you through how she looks back on the year with God, chooses a word for the year, and turns that word into focused, actionable steps without burnout. You’ll also learn a simple but powerful tool Melissa uses called a goal brain dump, a way to get everything out of your head, organize it by season, and move forward with intention instead of pressure. If you’re tired of starting over every January and want a healthier, God-led way to plan your year, this episode will help you slow down, refocus, and take your next step with confidence. Key Takeaways Why New Year’s resolutions often fail, even for motivated and disciplined women The difference between outcome-based goals and real-life goal setting How the 12-week approach helps you stay focused without feeling overwhelmed Why looking back at the previous year is essential before planning what’s next How choosing a word for the year can guide your decisions and priorities A simple goal brain dump method to organize goals by season instead of all at once How to turn clarity into action without burning yourself out Next Step If this episode gave you clarity and helped you see goal setting differently, a great next step is the 12-Week Reset Coaching Package. It’s a focused, one-on-one coaching package where we look at what’s draining you, what needs to change, and what to focus on next so you’re not trying to do everything at once. In this bonus episode of God-Sized Dreams, Melissa shares an honest and important update about the Screen Time Reset — one she didn’t expect when she launched the program just a few weeks ago. What began as a group coaching format has now shifted to a fully personalized 1-on-1 coaching experience, and in this episode, Melissa explains exactly why. From realizing how differently women use their screens, to seeing how emotional patterns and triggers vary from person to person, it became clear that screen time struggles are deeply personal — and the solution has to be personal too. Melissa opens up about: Why group coaching wasn’t the right fit for this transformation How God led her to shift directions with humility and obedience The emotional and practical reasons women need individualized support Why 30-minute private sessions offer better results than 60-minute group calls What’s coming next — including the return of The Success Lounge And why reclaiming your time is the necessary foundation for the habits God is calling you to build If you’ve been considering the Screen Time Reset but weren’t sure whether group coaching would fit your schedule, your emotional bandwidth, or your current capacity, this short conversation will give you the clarity you need. Mental Health, Distractions & Phone Addiction: What the Holidays Reveal About Your Habits
In this episode of God-Sized Dreams, Melissa shares a vulnerable and eye-opening look at the screen-time habits most of us finally noticed over the holidays — the constant checking, the overstimulation, the emotional numbing, and the way our phones quietly steal presence, peace, and connection. After asking her own family to check their screen-time data, Melissa discovered five-hour phone averages, 100–168 pickups a day, and more than 300 notifications in a single day. These numbers tell a story many of us feel but haven’t put words to: we are overwhelmed, distracted, and operating on mental overload… and our phones have become our default coping mechanism. This conversation isn’t about perfection or giving up your phone completely. It’s about finding one specific area where your phone is stealing something important — bedtime connection with your husband, dinner-table moments with your kids, or the space you need to hear from God — and learning how to protect that place with intention. If you are struggling with brain fog, feeling overstimulated, or emotionally overwhelmed as you head into winter, this episode will help you name what’s been happening, breathe a sigh of relief, and take a small baby step toward greater clarity and presence. Key Takeaways ● What holiday rhythms reveal about your screen-time habits Why slowing down helps you notice what you're normally too busy to see. ● Five-hour averages, 300 notifications & nonstop pickups How these small interruptions slowly drain your mental and emotional capacity. ● The link between phone addiction, anxiety & emotional numbing Why your phone becomes a coping mechanism when you’re overstimulated or exhausted. ● Procrastination, online shopping & escaping discomfort How distraction sneaks in when your brain is overwhelmed or tired ● Why this isn’t about getting off your phone completely Practical truth: it’s about getting specific with the area that matters most. ● Melissa’s personal story: protecting the bedtime hour How one small shift is changing the atmosphere of her home and marriage. Baby Step Challenge Choose ONE specific space where your phone is stealing connection, peace, or clarity — bedtime, dinner, after-school hours, car rides, or quiet mornings — and protect that space for the next three days. Simple, intentional, doable. Ready to Be More Present & Less Distracted? Join the 12-Week Screen Time Reset, where you’ll learn how to build calmer rhythms, lower your overwhelm, and reconnect with the people (and purpose) that matter most. Mental Health & Spiritual Discernment: Why I’m Choosing to Step Away from Social Media Indefinitely
In today’s episode of God-Sized Dreams, Melissa shares the behind-the-scenes story of why she is stepping away from social media indefinitely — not because she’s stuck, overwhelmed, or burned out, but because God asked her to. Through months of conviction, quiet nudges, and spiritual discernment, Melissa realized social media had slowly become a coping mechanism, a time-drain, and an area of misalignment with the very things she teaches women every week. What began as a summer break turned into a God-led invitation to choose obedience, presence, and mental health over algorithms and online pressure. She also shares the powerful parallel God showed her between alcohol and social media, the mental health stats that opened her eyes, and how He reminded her that He doesn’t need social media to reach the women she is called to serve. If you’ve been sensing the need to slow down, get quiet, or break unhelpful habits around your phone, this episode will encourage you to listen for God’s voice and trust Him with your reach, your time, and your next step. “If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or unsure what your next step should be, don’t forget I offer coaching designed to help you find clarity. Whether that’s a one-time Breakthrough Unstuck Session or a full 6 months together, you can check out all the details at melissabatt.com/breakthrough-coaching. Key Takeaways [01:02] Why This Episode Matters This conversation is more vulnerable than usual — rooted in honesty, mental health, and obedience. [02:00] The Conviction: God Kept Whispering “Lay It Down” How a summer break from social media turned into a clear assignment from God. [05:10] The Alcohol Parallel The moment God showed Melissa how social media had become a coping mechanism, similar to her past convictions with alcohol. [08:45] When Social Media Quietly Steals Your Peace & Time Even without comparison, scrolling can numb, distract, and keep you from hearing God clearly. [11:50] Mental Health & The Research That Opened My Eyes How social media impacts anxiety, distraction, loneliness, and our nervous systems. [15:20] Who I’m Called to Serve Right Now Why Melissa is shifting her focus to women who are actively searching, listening, and ready for change. God-Sized Dreams & the Church: Overcoming Perfectionism to Step Into Your Calling
In this episode of Priorities on Purpose, Melissa Batt shares a powerful conversation with a former coaching client about what the church is truly meant to be—a place for the broken, the hurting, and those who don’t feel like they have it all together. They talk about the tension between perfectionism and authenticity, how judgment inside the church can push people away, and why the body of Christ is called to be more like a hospital than a showcase for “perfect” Christians. Melissa also shares how chasing a God-sized dream doesn’t always mean taking a giant leap. Sometimes the first step is as simple as opening your home, inviting someone to sit on the floor, or starting a Bible study in an unexpected place. Those small, faithful steps break through perfectionism and help us walk in the calling God has placed on our lives. If you’ve ever struggled with perfectionism, wrestled with insecurities, or wondered how to take the next step toward your God-given purpose—this episode will encourage you to stop waiting for perfect conditions and start walking it out in faith. Key Takeaways: [00:02] – What the Church Is Meant to Be Why the church should look more like a hospital for the broken than a stage for perfection. [03:15] – The Trap of Perfectionism & Judgment How facades and judgment can keep people from finding the hope of Jesus. [06:40] – Celebrate Recovery & Authentic Community What 12-step programs can teach us about honesty, healing, and being real in church. [09:30] – Taking Small Steps Toward God-Sized Dreams Why your calling doesn’t start with a perfect plan—it begins with one step of obedience, even if it looks messy. [10:30] – Final Encouragement God isn’t asking for your perfection—just your surrendered yes. Feeling stuck in perfectionism, fear, or insecurity? You don’t have to stay there. Let’s talk it through in an Unstuck Session—a one-time, 1:1 call designed to help you get clarity and take your next step forward in faith.
