E36 Police Podcasting, Rookie Advice, and Are You Good?

This week we talk to Mike from Caffeinated Trauma, a police podcaster out of Austin, Texas. We delve into the motivations for podcasting and what is his current driving force. Podcasting while being an active law enforcement officer is rare so it was interesting to hear how he navigates it. We also talk about our common topic, police mental health. Although police agencies and first responders are lightyears ahead of where they were decades ago, there is still a long way to go to build a better future for cops in the mental health realm. Mike is doing what he can with his podcast to facilitate the discussion which will hopefully lead to a more informed future. And at the end of the day, all we can do is what we can before passing the torch to the next generation to improve upon. If you are interested in Mike's podcast, you can find him on Apple and Spotify under Caffeinated Trauma. If you want to follow his socials, go to Caffeinated Trauma on Instagram where he posts clips of his current/future episodes. Website now up!- yep and we have merch!TRIGGER WARNING should be assumed with all episodes. We approach all of these topics with a special 2 guest episode this week. All of us are passionate about mental health and know there is a struggle between learning how to compartmentalize so you don't fall apart on a scene and the need to seek therapy. For all the legal guidelines in the lawbook, there are a thousand blurry lines in police and how the adminstration handles each internal issue. However, although all three individuals on this episode have had a completely different policing career, they all come to the same conclusion that changes need to be made. Website now up!- yep and we have merch!TRIGGER WARNING should be assumed with all episodes. E13 (P2) Sacrifice, Loss, Guilt, and Trauma that Makes Us...Funny?

In part II of Kevin's interview we continue his story of traumatic events. However, this week we delve into his  experience with the murder of a friend, and coming close to being next. He delves into how he analyzed this mentally, for good or for bad, and what kind of a toll it took on his personal life. Luckily, this did not end how a lot do, and he was able to find the grit and support to continue on. I hope this episode speaks to those that are currently thinking there is no one that can empathize with their mental strife. I hope it teaches listeners to wait, ask for help, and see that people will show up for you. There is also some pretty inappropriate Gallows Humor as always, so you have been warned. Listen on and please respect the stories and those willing to be candid as that is a hard thing to come by sometimes.Website now up!- yep and we have merch!TRIGGER WARNING should be assumed with all episodes. Half Serious Season 1 Trailer

Quick Trailer to give you snippets of what to expect when listening. Although humor and good conversation is always mixed in, we do cover some hard subjects that are often not talked about. No, not an exclusive police podcast, but since I am a retired cop, we do have a lot of those stories on here. We explore a wide variety of topics and how when there seems to be no joy in the moment, people find a way to laugh again, and keep moving forward.Website now up!- yep and we have merch!TRIGGER WARNING should be assumed with all episodes. E11: Child Loss, Christianity, and Talking with an Agnostic

This week we talk to Keith. He was on track to retiring from the military when he got a calling to change his path. During this drastic change, he also had the ultimate challenge in his belief system with the hardest loss a parent can experience. We  explore his different views on Christianity and how it applies to his everyday life. Since I am what I coin an "agnostic at best" I question his stance from my point of view. This gives you a more well-rounded look at religious views without any hate mixed in. We show respect for each other's journey and how our lives have led us to two very different belief systems. If you like what you hear, you should give a listen to Keith's podcast - "What Then Say You" where he takes a unique approach to different topics  applying how he interprets Christianity. Please like/share/comment so we can get input so Half Serious can continue to produce a good quality podcast. E7 The Iron Curtain, Swimming, and Redefining Success

This conversation explores the journey of Ildiko Szekely. She began  swimming  at the age of three in the midst of a communist regime in Hungary. She was lucky enough to make it to the States when she turned seventeen due to her swimming talents. Now, the road to the US was unimaginable for those that have experienced the normal club swimming temperament. But, her journey did not end there. She has continued to thrive and challenge herself in ways we should all aspire to do. Currently, she is better known as "swimplify" on social media where she draws passion and interest to the sport of swimming. I am continually intrigued by her point of view after extreme hardships, and how she turned a sport that should have broken her, into a sport that keeps her thriving. If you are even the slightest interest in swimming be it just starting or pro, I would highly suggest following her Instagram page "Swimplify." She details workouts, drills, and just shares the pure enjoyment of the sport to motivate you to get in the water. Her book (link below) explores her inspiring journey more in depth and I highly recommend it to anyone needing a little motivation, to keep freaking going!  Unattached: https://a.co/d/bT2HPSc Website now up!- yep and we have merch!TRIGGER WARNING should be assumed with all episodes. E6 Vehicle Pursuits and Positive Outlooks

A retired cop and ex-marine discusses some of the worst calls that he has been on and how he was able to continue to show up, even though the calls never seemed to get any better. He  discusses  camaraderie and expectation of those around you to include the levity a team can bring to a situation. He was a perpetual shit magnet for the most messed up calls which gave him a leg up on experience, but a harsh perspective on life. However, even though this career has taken some of those closest to him, he still loved it for what it was. His path teaches us that passion for something means the good with the bad and with retirement, comes a whole other outlook. Listen, like, share, but please comment. E2 Stabbings and Frogger

In this episode we that describe some dire situations he was in while acting in a law enforcement capacity. Then we address how he overcame the issues to continue to thrive in his career. Now, we do not hold back on the “cop shop” and gore with gallows humor. I want to stay true to life in these podcasts, and in this one it is a true conversation. So if you are easily offended or queasy, maybe pick another episode that doesn’t involve law enforcement. No judgement. But also hopefully none on the flip side either as gallows humor is how LEOs continue to show up every day.Website now up!- yep and we have merch!TRIGGER WARNING should be assumed with all episodes.
