Politics, Plunges & Purpose - Woody chats to MSP Rachael Hamilton
Rachael Hamilton MSP has never been one to shy away from rolling up her sleeves…she’s built her career around championing Scotland's farming communities, small businesses and the people who call the countryside home.Since first being elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2016, Rachael has represented the South of Scotland and has gone on to be re-elected time and again as the constituency MSP for Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire. Today, she serves as Deputy Leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, with responsibilities covering the economy, tourism and education.Over the years, Rachael has worked alongside four Scottish Conservative leaders, taking on a wide range of senior roles including Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Small Business, Rural Affairs, Equalities, Social Security and Older People, and Rural Economy. She has also served on numerous parliamentary committees, giving her experience across everything from tourism and culture to rural affairs, justice and the economy. Before politics, Rachael's career was firmly rooted in rural Scotland. A BASIS-qualified agronomist who studied at Harper Adams University, she has first-hand experience of agriculture and understands the challenges facing farmers and rural businesses. She also helped run her family's hospitality business, the Buccleuch Arms, where she developed a lifelong appreciation for local enterprise, resilience and community.Away from politics, Rachael is every bit as energetic as you'd imagine. She's a big fan of cold water swimming and rarely says no to a dip—even when the Scottish weather has other ideas! We often joke she's a wee bit like Wonder Woman: a quick icy swim, then ready in record time then off to meetings looking effortlessly put together. She's also passionate about encouraging more women and young people into public life. As a mentor with Women2Win Scotland, she enjoys supporting the next generation of leaders and believes politics is strongest when it reflects the people it serves.Warm, hardworking and full of energy, Rachael brings humour, determination and a refreshingly down-to-earth approach to life—whether she's debating in Holyrood, visiting local businesses, or diving into cold water before the working day begins.Enjoy this episode of Happy Thistle 💜[email protected] https://www.rachaelhamilton.co.uk---Find your financial footing with Mortgage Advice Bureau. Think Happy Dolphins. Think Scotty ~ Remembering the warmth, kindness & positivity of Scott Hastings
The outpouring of love and tributes for the universally loved former Scotland rugby star Scott Hastings who passed away last week has been immense ..no surprise.. he was indeed one of the kindest, fun, mischievous and caring people. Everyone who knew him has been saying the same things. Warm, kind, loyal, thoughtful. We all should take a leaf out of his book and be more of these things. When I asked if he’d come on my podcast as a guest a few years ago..of course he said yes straight away..because that was Scott’s style. Always giving of himself to help others. Painfree and purpose lead - learn how to move your body back to Happy with Somatic Coach Bron Armstrong
I’m chatting with Bron Armstrong, a Somatic practitioner based in Kelso in the beautiful Scottish Borders. Bron has always been active but over time, her body started telling a different story. She was diagnosed with mild scoliosis, a functional leg length difference, and asthma… and gradually, more and more pain became part of daily life. And here’s the thing — she tried everything. If you’ve ever been in pain, you’ll know that feeling of just wanting your body to feel like your own again. Then she discovered the Hanna Method of Somatics — and that’s when things really began to change.Through learning how to work with her nervous system and retrain her body from the inside out, she experienced huge improvements — better posture, easier movement, freedom from pain… and even becoming asthma free. Amazing. Now she helps others do the same - supporting people to create long-term, pain-free change. In today’s conversation, we talk about how stress and life experiences can get stored in the body, why pain isn’t always what we think it is, and how small, gentle movements can lead to big shifts — not just physically, but emotionally too.Because feeling happy isn’t just about what’s going on in our minds… it’s about feeling at home in our bodies. So if you’ve ever felt stiff, sore, stressed — or just curious about how to feel more comfortable in yourself — this one’s for you.Let’s get into it… there’s also a wee bonus at the end where Bron takes us through a few somatic movements. Enjoy! .. and if you want to get in touch with Bron find her details below.Connect with BronwynEmail: [email protected]: www.bronwynsclinicalsomatics.com

Be More Dog: Grief, Gratitude & the Happiness They Teach Us
Today’s episode is a very personal one. I’m talking about the loss of my beautiful, loyal dog, Mowgli. If you’ve ever loved a dog, you’ll know they’re never just a dog. They’re family. They’re constant companions. They’re there in the quiet moments, the joyful ones, the hard days — always present, always loving, always loyal.Losing Mowgli brought deep grief… but also deep gratitude. Gratitude for the years of unconditional love. For the walks, the waggy tail, the comfort, the way he just was — never worrying about yesterday, never stressing about tomorrow.Dogs have this incredible way of living fully in the moment. They forgive quickly. They love completely. They greet each day with enthusiasm. And it’s made me reflect on how much happier we might be if we were just a wee bit more dog.So today, I’m sharing my thoughts on grief, on gratitude, and on the powerful lessons our dogs teach us about loyalty, love, and happiness. This one’s for Mowgli — and for anyone who has ever loved and lost a four-legged best friend. If you loved this episode, take a screenshot and tag me over on Instagram @woodyymorris, and if you feel inclined jump onto Apple podcasts and leave a 5* review.Always remember.. Life, Death and a Walk in the Woods💜
Today’s episode is a tender one.I’m speaking with an incredible lady who has only recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But this isn’t a conversation about endings in the way you might expect. It’s about walks in the woods, family dinners, ordinary days and the quiet beauty of simple things. When life becomes undeniably finite, something shifts. The small things don’t feel small anymore. These moments carry a different depth. A different kind of meaning. In this conversation, former nurse, political and mum of 6, Michelle Ballantyne, shares what it means to live fully while knowing time is precious. Not through grand gestures or dramatic declarations, but through presence. Through choosing to keep stepping outside, to keep loving, to keep living. It’s honest. It’s heartfelt. I’m so glad you’re here to listen. I think this one will stay with you for a long time to come.Thank you so much Michelle - a true example of servant leadership and hope.If you loved this episode, take a screenshot and tag me over on Instagram @woodyymorris, and if you feel inclined jump onto Apple podcasts and leave a 5* review.Always remember.. Live life, love hard & never ever give up - with Jane Macdonell
Today’s episode of Happy Thistle covers a hugely sensitive topic. Teenage suicide. I met Jane Macdonell last year and was struck by her incredible resilience, strength, unbelievable courage, lust for life and attempt to still try and be happy. How is this possible I kept asking myself? Jane was dealt the cruellest of all blows as a mother.. the death of her 19 year old son Harris through suicide. With the support of her husband Dave, their three children, friends, family and local community Jane gets up every morning to tackle life. They set up the ‘Harris Trust’ ~ a charity to raise awareness and provide training around neurodiversity and mental health in the Scottish Borders. They’ve organised ceilidhs, runs, concerts. Ultimately it’s all about helping prevent what happened to them happen again to another family. Jane’s mantra is: ‘Try to find something that gives you joy every day. It can be a very small thing but you can find it. ‘I cannot express how in awe I am of this woman. You will need tissues. If you loved this episode, take a screenshot and tag me over on Instagram @woodyymorris, and if you feel inclined jump onto Apple podcasts and leave a 5* review.Always remember..
