As I glanced at the Zoom chat box after our weekly classes, this week, I realized that not everyone was clear on why we fast on the Tenth of Tevet. While most of my weekly online students have been with me for several years, newer students missed the Four Fasts and the Torah portions in which we unpacked some reasons why they appear in Zechariah. It dawned on me…if they missed some of the Four Fast teachings, then probably they’re a little lost when I discuss the Egyptian crocodile/serpent as the “father” of the beast kingdoms. It’s not that folks don’t try to catch up, it’s that the number of teaching videos available is overwhelming when one searches for a particular topic of interest. I can’t even remember what topic is in what videos! (Is 52:7) This is why the birthpangs of Messiah are also called the "Footsteps of Messiah." In the darkest night of mankind, Messiah's footsteps may be heard upon the mountains, which represent the nations, and he is announcing salvation to the Fig Tree.

This week, we will look at the next wilderness: Yet, another “woman” goes to the wilderness. She is characterized by virtue: “Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for 1,260 days.” (Re 12:6) The midrash to the Song of Songs explains why the woman Israel is in the wilderness and gives specific predictions about how the serpent will pursue her. The midrash refers to Isaiah 59:15 concerning this tribulation as a time when “Truth became absent [ne-ederet] and refraining from evil seemed foolish.”

This week we continue to examine what the Scriptures say about the Footsteps of Messiah and how ancient scholars interpreted these verses. Remarkably, John’s Revelation is often parallel with those ancient views of the texts.

In view of the increasingly troubled time we are in, I thought it worthwhile to present a Sukkot “after-party” encouragement to begin preparing for Passover. In fact, if you’re not already thinking about Passover, you’re behind! It is traditional to read the Song of Songs during the Passover week. Its main theme is resurrection, but incredibly, the ancient sages’ commentaries link the Song to other prophecies. Their expectation of the ingathering of the exiles, the nature of Messiah, the times in which he will return, and the judgments are incredibly contemporary to what is happening to the fig tree Israel today and even headline news. This week and next, we will shine the spotlight on some of the expectation concerning the fig tree prophecy contained in 2:13 The fig tree has ripened its fruit, And the vines in blossom have given forth their fragrance.
