    Episode 48: It (2017)

We’re kicking off the warm season with another excellent Stephen King adaptation: It (2017)! This film is an incredible blend of some intense scares with some of the best comedic relief we’ve seen so far on this podcast, while managing to still be true horror rather than a horror-comedy. The filmmakers and the actors really nailed the vibe, and we enjoyed this one so much that we truly cannot wait to watch It Chapter Two (2019)! That being said, it may be a little longer than we hoped before we’re able to do that. After this episode, we’ll be taking a bit of a break for a little while. Episode 47: The Babadook (2014)

It’s not Pride Month yet but in this house, we celebrate gay icons year round. This week we did just that by watching Australian horror film The Babadook (2014). This film navigates so many issues that are not talked about often enough in modern society, such as grief, the hard and sometimes ugly parts of motherhood, single parenthood, and more. This movie is very highly regarded in recent horror cinema, and for many good reasons! Tune in to hear all about it, including how Mister Babadook himself became a queer icon (if it isn’t obvious already). Episode 46: Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021)

A slasher series with undead murderers, a neon 90s aesthetic, that’s based on R. L. Stine books? Say no more, we’re on board and you should be too! This film pays homage to a lot of everyone’s favorite horror media, from 90s slashers to Stephen King, while still keeping things fresh and fun. We had a ton of fun watching this one, and can’t wait to jump into the other two parts of the series! Episode 45: Fresh (2022)

Dating in recent years is actually a nightmare, and with Fresh (2022), filmmakers capture one of the actual worst case scenarios. This film is a wild ride, with its start looking a whole lot like an excellent rom-com in the making until there’s a SHARP left turn somewhere along the way and you’re left wondering who will make it out all in one piece. Join us as we discuss a film about some depraved things, but more importantly, about how much we absolutely love women. Episode 44: Creep (2014)

We realized it’s been a minute since we’ve gotten into a good found footage horror, so this week we watched Creep (2014)! This movie (along with its sequel) has gained quite a cult following since its release, and for good reason. Creep (2014) is a deeply strange, and to some (including us) a deeply disturbing film, and we had a wild time watching it. The filmmakers definitely proved that you don’t have to work with much in order to create something that will absolutely make an impression on audiences.  Please visit the following pages for some ways that you can help Palestinians in crisis: DEMAND CEASEFIRE IN GAZA: https://ceasefiretoday.com/ Trusted organizations to donate to for Palestine (this website is also updated regularly : https://buildpalestine.com/2021/05/15/trusted-organizations-to-donate-to-palestine/ BDS Movement to end Palestinian oppression (includes a boycott list, ways that you can help, and more): https://bdsmovement.net/  Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF): https://www.pcrf.net/ The above resources are barely scratching the surface. Episode 43: Into the Dark: Pure (2019)

Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day!!! As Tay explains in the beginning, this episode was supposed to be uploaded on Valentine’s Day, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it was delayed. Just, like, pretend it’s Valentine’s Day for an hour or so, okay? ANYWAY, this week we covered another episode of the Hulu series Into the Dark: Pure! This episode of Into the Dark, made by women filmmakers, is all about the trauma of purity culture, and the whole spectrum of ways that girls, women, and other femme-presenting people are forced to cope with it. Episode 42: No One Will Save You (2023)

Well friends, last week we mentioned the aliens in Miami, and promised you an alien film, and No One Will Save You (2023) was the perfect way to deliver on that promise. This film is absolutely fascinating. It manages to be a fresh take on alien invasion films, while also bringing in a lot of the classic alien imagery that we all know and love. As tends to happen with anything involving space, this one sent Moth down a whole rabbit hole, so grab yourself a snack and get cozy! There’s a lot to discuss this week. BONUS: The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

IT’S MOTH’S BIRTHDAY!!!! So of course, we’re getting goofy with it and bringing you a BONUS episode, complete with a game that requires some sort of drink, if you get our drift. For Moth’s birthday, we decided to watch The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)!! This one may not necessarily pop into your mind when you’re thinking “spooky”, but this movie sure did keep some of us up at night when we were kids. Re-watching it now as adults was so much fun, AND we got to talk about tons of folklore and mythological creatures, which is always a fun time. Episode 41: The Others (2001)

Y’all want a ghost movie with some heavy doses of religious trauma? Because that’s what you’re getting this week with The Others (2001)! This film was written, directed, and had it’s score composed by the same person (Alejandro Amenabar), and we’re pretty sure he’s a genius. He made choices with this film that very few (if any) filmmakers made before he created The Others, and that in itself is an impressive feat. And the twist at the end??? Unexpected. Incredible. M. Night Shyamalan is quaking in his boots.Tune in to hear all about it! Episode 40: The Ritual (2017)

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We’re starting this year off STRONG with one of the coolest survival horror movies that either of us have ever seen. It also has one of the most interesting horror monsters, both visually and in terms of the monster’s background! This week, we watched The Ritual (2017), and spent a while talking about the different mythos that inspired both the film and the novel by Adam Nevill released in 2011. We truly cannot say enough good things about this movie; it’s one of our favorites we’ve covered so far. Tune in to hear all about why we love it! Episode 39: Into the Dark: A Nasty Piece of Work (2019)

Happy Holidays!! This week, we started to dive into the Blumhouse series Into the Dark, and barely scratched the surface. Into the Dark has two seasons of full-length horror/thriller films, each created by different filmmakers, and each centered around a specific holiday. The filmmakers for A Nasty Piece of Work knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they created a dark Christmas film all about greed, competition, and exploitation in the workplace. All these dark themes, and yet, they still managed to make one of the most fun Holiday thrillers we’ve ever seen! Give it a watch if you haven’t already, and be sure to tune into this week’s episode. Episode 36: Skinamarink (2022) with Netsurfer Pro!

This week during the discussion portion of the episode, we’re joined by the lovely hosts of Netsurfer Pro: Matthew Marisa and Galen! Depending on which corner of the internet you dwell in, you may or may not have heard of the experimental film we’re discussing today, Skinamarink. If you happen to be in Moth’s corner, you were probably intrigued about why it seemed like the whole internet lost their minds about this one last year, and we’re here to talk about exactly that (and so much more). Skinamarink left us all with a ton of questions to work through, like - what even is a Skinamarink? Why is the house demon terrorizing these children? What happened to their mom? And what exactly did I just watch? This may be the deepest (and certainly is the longest) discussion we’ve had about any film so far on Here’s Horror, so strap in and get ready for a wild ride where we unpack everything we possibly can about this strange, wonderful film. Make sure you check out our Instagram to enter our GIVEAWAY!!! Winners will be announced via Instagram on Halloween, so you only have a few days left!! Episode 35: Haunt (2019)

What can we say? Halloween really does hit different in the Midwest, and in Haunt (2019), they really take it to the extreme. This movie is everyone’s worst haunted attraction nightmare come to life, in the absolute best way possible. Haunt is definitely an underrated gem. It’s one of the most highly rated films we’ve covered so far, and for tons of good reasons! There’s killer clowns, spooky spiders, and seemingly innocuous scares with much more sinister intentions just below the surface - and it all happens to take place in Moth’s college town. Well friends, we made it. This episode, we watched Scream VI (2023), the latest installment of our most beloved franchise! The filmmakers really went all-out with this one, putting a lot of really interesting firsts and twists into the movie to keep us all on our toes. Will Ghostface finally get a bayonet? Is there a secret Ghostface Cult run by the allegedly deceased Stu Macher? Was Ethan *really* at Econ? Tune in for all of that nonsense and then some! Episode 31: The Omen (1976)

This week, we watched another icon in horror history. A film in which an unsuspecting couple is raising the actual antichrist… allegedly. Toddlers can just be hellish sometimes, so who's to say? Not only were there a lot of strange things surrounding Damien, the child at the center of the terror in The Omen (1976), but there were a ton of strange things that happened to cast and crew during and after creating the film. Episode 30: The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Did we accidentally make a cabin theme here? Maybe. BUT this time it’s Old Gods demanding young flesh as a sacrifice in order to allow the human race to continue on. That’s right, we’re watching The Cabin In The Woods (2011) this week! A group of college kids (each representing one of the main horror character tropes) go to stay at a remote cabin, and find a basement full of strange objects. And Chris Hemsworth is there, along with an incredibly stacked cast and some really wild monsters.  What could possibly go wrong? Episode 29: Us (2019)

We’re back into the summer vibes with a family-fun summer vacation gone horribly wrong when doppelgangers start rising from beneath the Santa Cruz boardwalk to wreak havoc on, well, everyone. That’s right, this week we’re watching another Jordan Peele masterpiece: Us (2019)! Not only are the performances and storyline for this phenomenal, but the meaning behind it all is a lesson that everyone should think more about as we navigate our way through life. Tune in to hear our takes on the film, as well as Jordan Peele’s intentions behind it. And don’t worry, we discuss whether or not we believe we’d beat our own doppelgangers in a fight. Episode 28: Scream (2022)

We are ALMOST caught up with the Scream franchise! This time, we watched the fifth installment or re-quel (scream-make?) that came out last year, Scream (2022). This film followed up one of the more controversial films in the franchise, so Moth was a little hesitant about it. Thankfully,Scream (2022) exceeded expectations and successfully launched a whole new arc, with a new incredible cast alongside a few of our familiar favorites. Most importantly, the filmmakers took a lot of care to pay tribute to the man who started it all: Wes Craven. We love a good excuse to honor one of the greatest horror filmmakers of all time (in our humble opinions)! Here’s Horror is streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, and more! Episode 27: Jaws (1975)

HAPPY SHARK WEEK! We’re celebrating by covering the iconic blockbuster, JAWS (1975). Moth went down a whole rabbit hole (shark hole?) and had a ton of fun researching this film, the author of the book that inspired the movie, some of the real life incidents that inspired him, and MUCH more. Jaws (1975) has an absolutely wild history full of ground-breaking innovation for the film industry, and it is well deserving of all the accolades it’s received over the years. We spent some time discussing shark and ocean conservation, as well, which are among Moth’s favorite things. Was Jaws responsible for the negative light cast on sharks in recent history? Are sharks REALLY that important for the ecosystem? And did Steven Spielberg almost get another renowned figure in film killed because of a prank on set? We answer all these questions and many more this week.  Here’s Horror is streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, and more! Episode 26: The Purge (2013)

Who doesn’t love a little summertime anarchy? This week we watched one that caught Tay a bit by surprise: The Purge (2013)! This movie was EVERYWHERE when it came out, and it was fairly controversial before filming even began. We discussed the mixed reviews of the film, why it didn’t necessarily live up to some expectations, why people SHOULD give it a chance, the filmmakers’ intentions behind the film, and of course touched on what we would do if the Purge became a reality. After all, are we really that far off from something like that happening? Here’s Horror is streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, and more! BONUS: Heathers (1988)

Today is Tay’s birthday!!! This time, we’re going a little demented with it, watching the absolute icon that is Heathers (1988). We talk a lot about what went on behind the scenes, how much we adore Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, MCR for some reason, and more! Of course, because this is a birthday episode, there is a fun little 21+ game involved. Feel free to play along, but be responsible! So, grab a snack and maybe something fun to drink (it could even be apple juice, you don’t have to get weird with it), and hang out with us while we celebrate NOT ONLY Tay, but also the anniversary of our first ever full-length episode release. Episode 25: Midsommar (2019)

In honor of the upcoming first day of summer, and of course the mid-summer festivals that are bound to ensue very soon, this week we watched Ari Aster’s second feature film, Midsommar (2019)! Though, of course, the events of the film are a LITTLE different than what one could expect to happen during an actual Midsommar festival. Episode 22: As Above, So Below (2014)

This week, we ventured into the Paris Catacombs to find the long lost Philosopher’s Stone. Or rather, we watched a crew of people do this in a weird horrifying version of a National Treasure or Indiana Jones type movie. Basically if you make Nick Cage a woman, and instead of finding the Declaration of Independence she finds actual Hell on Earth underneath the city of Paris, you get As Above, So Below (2014). It is a JOURNEY to say the least. We also go through the film’s depictions of the circles of Hell, as Dante’s Divine Comedy: Inferno likely played a part in the inspiration of the movie! If you want to learn more about the Paris Catacombs (or rather, the Ossuary), head on over to our Ko-Fi! Episode 21: A Quiet Place (2018)

What would YOU do if the world was overrun by monsters with supersonic hearing? We aren’t really sure (or are we?), but this week we watched A Quiet Place (2018) to find out what the Abbott family did! We also spent a lot of time talking about accessibility in film and how this movie does a good job with it in some regards, but falls short in others. We could not have done this without reading reviews of the film from the Deaf community to get an idea of some of the ways that individuals within the community felt about the film, and we learned a lot along the way! We want to thank the Deaf community for the extensive amount of articles and reviews that we could reference for this episode, and always welcome any feedback regarding any issues that we may have misspoken or misrepresented in any way. We are always happy to do any additional research into issues we need to! Here’s Horror is streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, and more! Episode 20: The Haunting In Connecticut (2009)

This week, we’re bringing Tay back to the realm of supernatural horror with The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)! Who doesn’t love a classic ghost story, which may or may not be based on real events? We took a deep dive not only into the making of the film itself, but also into the allegedly true story of the haunting that inspired this film, and OH BOY is it a wild story. Was necromancy involved? Did people get their eyelids stolen? Or was it a totally normal house? Hard to say. Here’s Horror is streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, and more! Episode 19: Scream 3 (2000)

It’s SCREAM SEASON, baby!!! In honor of Scream VI coming out earlier this month (and another thing that happened, which you can find out about on our Ko-Fi), we finished out the original Scream Trilogy with Scream 3 (2000). As we all learned from Randy (RIP), every film has rules, and in the third installment of a trilogy, nobody is safe… Not even Tay (that’s a joke, they can leave any time they want but they love it here so they won’t). This isn’t the last of the Scream franchise, of course, but we’ll space out the rest of the films over the next year or so, so that Tay can get caught up before the next one comes out! Episode 18: Jennifer's Body (2009)

Happy International Women’s Day!!! To celebrate, we watched a movie made by women, about women, and for women: Jennifer’s Body (2009). Also, Tay chose this one! This feminist revenge horror comedy starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried is iconic, and undoubtedly was ahead of its time, even if some of the jokes don’t hold up today. We truly believe it deserved WAY better than the way it was received by the public at the time, and talk all about how and why it flopped when it came out. Episode 17: NOPE (2022)

Moth got into a little trouble with the spooky level of the last episode, so hopefully this one is a little more palatable! This episode we had a couple of firsts: our first extraterrestrial horror movie, AND the first of Jordan Peele’s horror films! That’s right, we’re watching NOPE (2022). For those who aren’t familiar, it’s an alien/sci-fi horror film with an amazing cast, and the perfect balance of spookiness and humor. Tune in to see if Tay is still mad at Moth after this one lol. Episode 16: Grave Encounters (2011)

We’re baaaack!!! We missed you all so much! Thank you so much for being patient with us while we took most of January off. Since we were gone for a while, we have so much to fill you in on, so the intro for this one is a little long! We tried our best to stay on topic, but can you blame us for being so giddy and excited to be recording again? We jumped right back in with a pretty scary (but also pretty cheesy, not gonna lie) found-footage film: Grave Encounters (2011)! BONUS: Coraline (2009)

It’s officially time for another birthday Bonus Episode! Today for Moth’s birthday, we watched one of their favorite fun-spooky movies: “Coraline” (2009). In addition to the usual background info, Moth took a deep dive into some of the fan theories behind the film, and actually read the book in preparation! Wild, we know. And, of course, because it’s a birthday episode, there’s a twist… we played another *game* and it got a little ridiculous (in the best way). Neil Gaiman if you’re reading this - we love you. Episode 15: Krampus (2015)

Happy Holidays, everyone! What’s more festive than a Christmas demon (of sorts)?? Also, prepare for some chaos, because Moth and Tay are FINALLY in the same place together for a little while. In this episode, we talk about the whimsical but terrifying 2015 film, Krampus, as well as the folklore behind the Christmas Demon himself, and some other fun folklore! With this being our last episode of the year, we would like to thank everyone who has listened and supported us in so many ways so far. In this episode, we have our very first Special Guest, Kevin Lau from the Committed Critics podcast! Kevin worked as a PA for the Shudder Original Film we are discussing today, Revealer (2022)! He also made a super sick documentary about the making of Revealer. This is another film that both Moth and Tay went into without Moth ever having watched it! All we can say is… holy sh*t. It’s incredible, and we highly encourage everyone to check out Revealer at the links below! It has demons, an apocalypse, peep show dancers - NEED WE SAY MORE? We’re revisiting ‘90s slashers already! We love to see (hear?) it. This episode is full of firsts! Not only is it Tay’s first time seeing Urban Legend (1998), but it’s Moth’s as well! We’ve never covered a film Moth hasn’t seen before, so tune in to find out if it went horribly, horribly wrong, or very right. Eco-horror is such an interesting topic, and we are so stoked to start exploring it with this iconic film. We’re back with another SCREAM, BABY! Moth didn’t feel it would be a proper introduction to Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s iconic franchise without the sequel. Because as Stu Macher once said, “let’s face it, baby! These days, ya gotta have a sequel!” Tay also managed to bring Alvin and the Chipmunks into this one somehow? Episode 9: Trick 'r Treat (2007)

This is arguably one of the absolute most festive Halloween movies out there, folks. It’s time for Trick ‘r Treat (2007)! Christmas, Easter, and even Valentine’s Day all have their own icons, so why not Halloween? That’s exactly what director Michael Dougherty set out to do, and we feel like he was pretty successful in that. I mean come on, we see Sam all over the place during the Halloween season now! Episode 8: Hell House LLC (2015)

Hiding under the covers might not save you for this one, friends. Moth found Hell House LLC (2015) earlier this year and absolutely fell in love with it. It quickly became one of their favorite found footage films ever, so naturally they HAD to share it with Tay this Spooky Season, effectively putting this friendship to the test. It literally couldn't wait.  Tune in to see if the pod will go on after this one, or if Moth broke Tay. Also, take a drink (of water) every time Tay says "no" or "I'm afraid." This week we’re going a little lighter on the spook scale, but still very heavy with the Spooky Season vibes! A teenage witch coven is a must for Halloween, right? Right?? This week, we watched the 1996 supernatural teen-horror film, The Craft. Not sure how Tay has gone this long without seeing this one, so we just had to fix that problem, obviously. Enjoy! Episode 6: John Carpenter's Halloween (1978)

HAPPY SPOOKY SEASON, FRIENDS!!! Moth is planning to cover films this month that really encompass Halloween vibes, so naturally we had to kick off the month with everyone’s favorite babysitter-slaying slasher: Michael Myers in John Carpenter’s Halloween! Also, SURPRISE!! For the month of October, we will be uploading new episodes every single Wednesday! That means double the spook this month. But the spooks don’t end there! This month, Moth is having a Spooky Movie Marathon, in which they watch at least one spooky movie every single day! They will be posting each film the day before they watch it, both on Twitter and our IG stories for those who would like to join. SO MUCH SPOOK!!! We have officially made it to our first found footage film! Moth really wanted to dive into another found footage classic, but figured it’d be better to start here and work our way up to that one. Really, it’s a cautionary tale about not messing with Ouija boards… which Moth may have a little too much experience with. Tune in to hear Tay’s thoughts on this new (to them) subgenre!
