    354. Passion of John the Baptist

The Feast of the Passion (or Beheading) of Saint John the Baptist is commemorated annually on August 29. It marks the martyrdom and death of John the Baptist, unlike his other major feast on June 24, which celebrates his birth. The word "passion" comes from the Latin word passio, which means "suffering" or "enduring." Christians believe John the Baptist's death mirrors Christ's ultimate sacrifice. The Church uses "passion" to elevate John's death above common martyrdom. John the Baptist and Jesus are the only figures whose deaths are considered liturgical "passions." Pericope Adulterae

The Woman Caught in Adultery (adulterae) is a New Testament passage (pericope) that relates a message of mercy and forgiveness balanced with a call to holy living have endured in Christian thought. Both "let him who is without sin cast the first stone" and "go, and sin no more" have found their way into common usage. The English idiomatic phrase to "cast the first stone" is derived from this passage. The passage has been taken as confirmation of Jesus's ability to write, otherwise only suggested by implication in the Gospels, but the original word in John 8:8 could mean "draw" as well as "write". Queenship of Mary (Biblical foundation)

Celebrated annually on August 22, the eighth day (the octave) after the Solemnity of the Assumption (August 15), the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an official liturgical feast day linking Mary's bodily assumption into heaven with her coronation as queen. Established in 1954 by Pope Pius XII, the day honors Mary as the Mother of Jesus, designated by Christians as the King of Kings, and recognizes her unique role and spiritual intercession in heaven and earth. Chapter 12 from the Book of Revelation describes a "woman clothed with the sun" who gives birth to a male child, which some Christian interpreters view as a symbolic representation of Mary crowned in heavenly glory, thereby providing biblical foundation and support for the Queenship of Mary. Story of the Adulteress

Jesus and the Woman taken in Adultery is a story found in the Gospel of John. There is, however, a broad academic consensus that the passage is a later interpolation added after the earliest known manuscripts of the Gospel of John. Nevertheless, many scholars conclude that the story does record an actual event in the life of Jesus and believe it was a well-known story circulating in the oral tradition about Christ, which at some point was added in the margin of a manuscript. Dormition (Gospel example)

The Gospels of Mark (5:21–43) and Luke (8:40–56) present the story of Jairus and his 12-year-old daughter whom Jesus raised from the dead. Some biblical scholars interpret this event as Jesus seeing death as a falling asleep, informing Christians how their transition from one world to the next is seen from God’s perspective. God sees death as a Dormition in anticipation of the greater life to come. A sinless person like the Virgin Mary will eventually experience it in exactly the same way, celebrated annually as the Feast of the Dormition or falling asleep of Mary or Theotokos — a Greek Orthodox title for the Virgin Mary meaning "God-bearer" or "Mother of God". 349. Assumption

August 15 is the annual Feast of the Bodily Assumption of Mary (aka Solemnity of the Assumption / The Dormition of the Theotokos). It commemorates the "falling asleep" (death), resurrection, and bodily assumption into heaven of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. The day thus honors Mary entering heaven. Christian denominations that celebrate the Feast include Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Catholic, and select Anglo-Catholic/Anglican/Episcopal and protestant Lutheran churches. 348. Christian Discoverer of Canada

Let’s conclude the fascinating saga of Catholic sailor Jacques Cartier’s voyages to what would soon be Christian New France. The Kingdom of Saguenay was a fanciful, mythical country rich in gold and diamonds supposedly located, according to the Natives, inland of present-day Quebec City. Cartier tried in vain to reach this realm on several occasions. From 1541 to 43 France attempted to Colonize Canada at the Cap Rouge settlement along the interior of the St.-Lawrence river valley. Cartier’s superior was Jean-François Roberval, a French military officer appointed viceroy of Canada by The Most Christian King Francis the First. 347. God, Diamonds, and Baptisms

Christian voyager Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) led his third and last expedition to the St.-Lawrence river valley in 1541. A new headquarters was established a few miles upstream from the Amerindian village of Stadacona, near the present site of Quebec City. This time Cartier was to be followed by Jean Francois de la Rocque, sieur de Roberval, with a party of colonists. After a wait which lasted through the following winter and the Baptism of Chief Donnacona, Cartier set sail for home, only to meet Roberval’s party in three tall ships in the harbor of what is now St. John’s, Newfoundland. Diamonds of Canada, mined by Jacques Cartier's men at the mouth of Rivière du Cap-Rouge proved to be worthless quartz. Cartier’s "treasure" is remembered in the name of Québec’s Cape Diamond or Cap aux Diamants and also in the French proverb "Faux comme un diamant du Canada", "As false as Canadian diamonds." 16th century Christian adventurer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) and his followers passed a bitter winter with the help of Iroquoian Chief Donnacona at Stadacona. Many of his party died from cold and scurvy before he could set sail for France the following spring in 1536 after erecting a cross near the river, praying for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and offering baptism to the local indigenous people.  Check out the YouTube version of this episode at https://youtu.be/Uz7y1xD93IU which has accompanying visuals including maps, charts, timelines, photos, illustrations, and diagrams. 345. Christian Explorer

Religious zeal motivated the rulers of European nations to explore and create colonies in North America and to convert the native peoples and sanctify Christian global dominance in the name of Jesus. Catholic navigator Jacques Cartier sailed the Saint Lawrence River (which he named) encountering Lake St-Peter and Nun’s Island. Along the way he visited the future ‘steeples & spires’ cities of Quebec and Montreal where he evangelized the natives by reading the Gospel of John with special emphasis on The Passion of Christ. The first European explorer known to have sailed up the St. Lawrence River itself was Jacques Cartier. At that time, the land along the river was inhabited by the St. Lawrence Iroquoians. Because Cartier arrived in the estuary on Saint Lawrence's feast day of August 10th, 1535, he named it the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River. 342. Lawrence, Saint or River?

Many place names throughout the continent were inspired by Christianity. For example, The mighty St-Lawrence River is the namesake of the early Christian, Laurence of Rome (225-258 AD). Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of the city of Rome, under Pope Sixtus the Second, who were martyred in the persecution of the Christians that the Roman Emperor Valerian ordered in 258 AD. 339. Jacques Cartier, Christian

Cartier (1491-1557) grew up in the Catholic port city of Saint-Malo in France where he acted frequently as a godfather and witness in local church baptismal registries. He sailed under the authority of the "Most Christian King" Francis I and voyaged under official royal mandates that explicitly tied French exploration to the service of Catholic Christendom. Cartier famously planted a 30-foot cross at Gaspé  Bay in 1534 that symbolized both French sovereignty and the Catholic faith. 337. Basilica of Saint Mary Major

On August 5, the Catholic Church annually celebrates the Optional Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four most illustrious churches of Rome, along with St. John Lateran, St. Peter, and St. Paul Outside the Walls, and Christendom’s first Marian shrine for pilgrims. An annual feast commemorates a miracle of the snowfall that occurred on the site where the Basilica of St. Mary Major now stands. The Virgin Mary had appeared in a dream to two faithful Roman Christians, as well as to Pope Liberius (352-366), asking that a church be built in her honor on the site where snow would fall on the night of August 5th.That’s why another name for the basilica is Our Lady of the Snow, Saint Mary of the Snow, and the feast of today is Our Lady of Snows, la Virgen Blanca, in Spanish. Nowadays, in Rome, during the Pontifical Mass, the traditional shower of flower petals descends from the ceiling of the basilica to commemorate the miraculous snowfall. Pope Francis’ mortal remains are buried in St. Mary Major. He was laid to rest near the icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani, translated to "Health or Salvation or Protectress of the Roman People." The image is a deeply revered ancient tableau purported to have been painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist. Saint Jerome (347–420) is buried at the Basilica, following his death in Bethlehem on September 30, 420 AD. Jerome was s Christian priest and Doctor of the Church best known for translating most of the Bible into Latin, a seminal work known as the Vulgate. He is also the patron saint of translators, librarians, archivists, and biblical scholars.
