Ep. 13: The Omen (1976)--Part 2 with Stephen Foxworthy

Its episode number lucky13 and we continue our conversation about The Omen, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this week. Once again, we are joined by actor, podcaster, and former Bible teacher Stephen Foxworthy to help us tackle this monumental task. In this episode we dive more into the movie itself and discuss the nature vs. nurture of parenting the Antichrist, the religious-sounding lore created for the movie, and whether or not the movie is actually cursed. So finish covering your walls with pages of the bible and hang those 47 crucifixes because this is one hell of a ride! Follow our guest Stephen Foxworthy @chewywalrus on Bluesky and Letterboxd. Ep. 12: The Omen (1976)--Part 1 with Stephen Foxworthy

It's the 50th Anniversary of one of the Mount Rushmore Films of Religious Horror and we pull out all the stops on our giant gothic pipe organ to discuss The Omen! We couldn't wade into these waters alone so we brought in a ringer--actor, podcaster, and former Bible teacher Stephen Foxworthy. The conversation was so epic that we had to break it into two parts! In this first part, we primarily discuss the theological underpinnings of the film, including Dispensationalism, what the Bible really says about the Antichrist, and Hal Lindsay's The Late Great Planet Earth. So gather your daggers of Megiddo and keep an eye out for Rottweilers because this will be quite a ride. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Ep. 11: Don't Torture a Duckling (1972) with Matt Rogerson

It is the dawn of Fulci week and we are taking a look at one of his greatest Holy Terrors--the exceptional giallo Don't Torture a Duckling. We've brought in an expert on the subject to discuss it with us, Matt Rogerson, author of Fulci's Inferno: Faith in the Films of a Horror and Giallo Auteur and The Vatican Versus Horror Movies (follow the links for more information). He is also the editor of Darkest Margins: 24 Essays on Liminality and Liminal Spaces in the Horror Genre. Join us as we talk about the complicated man that was Lucio Fulci as well as the complex themes and ideas that underscore Don't Torture a Duckling, which also happens to be one hell of a great story and film. Some Updates and The Burbs revisited

This week we have a couple exciting updates to share right at the beginning of the episode! Then, because this is a fifth Friday, we have decided to repost one of our favorite episodes to date on Joe Dante's The Burbs. But have no fear, we will be back next week with a brand new Confessional and three full movie discussion episodes for the rest of the month. Ep. 10: Kwaidan (1964)

In this episode we discuss one of the greatest horror anthologies ever made, Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan. We do our best to pull back the layers to examine the currents of Buddhism and Shintoism that run beneath each of the stories. Though we are limited in our understanding, we dove as deep as we could into this fascinating film. This episode was recorded before we switched to a video format, so there will not be a YouTube edition of this episode, but we hope you will check out our other episodes on YouTube as well as your podcast apps. Ep. 9: Repossessed (1990)

We're making good on our promise to follow up a heavy movie with something on the lighter side by discussing the true sequel to The Exorcist, 1990's Repossessed (please read that with the intended sarcasm). We discuss the changes made after director Bob Logan left the film, the depictions of televangelists and world religious leaders, and the legend that is Leslie Nielsen. More than anything we discuss what still works and what really, really doesn't, if it ever did. So put on your blue dress and join us as we try to figure out why the devil hates sex, drugs, and rock n' roll.  Follow the show:            Bluesky: @holyterrors            Instagram and Threads: @holyterrorspodcast            Twitter: @holyterrorspod Follow the hosts:            Brian is @brianwaves42 pretty much everywhere and Pat is on            Instagram @horrordad87

We're back with some more recent viewing habits. In this edition of The Confessional we discuss three movies each including Sleep, Undertone, The Freakmaker, and Over Your Dead Body. Ep. 8: mother! (2017) with Michele Eggen

What better way to celebrate Earth Day week than to discuss Darren Aronofsky's environmental apocalypse nightmare allegory Mother!. We are very happy to welcome our guest Michele Eggen of the Movies for Life Podcast (found in Season 1 of this feed) to discuss one of her favorite comfort movies--yes, really. We try to wade our way through some Kabbalah, Gnosticism, and mythology (oh my!) to try to get at the meaning of all that symbolism. So, if you ever wondered what Mother! is all about, we think we have some pretty good ideas while acknowledging that there are so many more possibilities than we had time for. Join us for a rousing, deep, but also very fun discussion of this giant stressball of a movie. We grab our dusters and perch on our chairs to discuss the highly entertaining and rather confounding The Prophecy. Topics include that stacked cast, the convoluted motivations of the angels and the devil, the impeccable sense of style, and above all the incomparable Christopher Walken. We also pose a challenge to our listeners on that front. So join us for the most 90s of 90s religious horrors--it's one hell of a ride. We discuss the authenticity of the depiction of LDS missionaries, the veracity of the various arguments presented in the film, and how Hugh Grant gave us the best ever performance of "Creep." MFL-Best Picture Winners: REBECCA and THE APARTMENT

March means awards season in the movie world so here on Movies for Life we're doing a couple episodes in the month of March having to do with the Oscars. For today's episode, we've chosen a couple of our personal favorite movies from the Oscars' history of Best Picture winners! First we discuss Michele's choice, the Best Picture winner of 1940 - Alfred Hitchcock's REBECCA. It's definitely not your typical romance story, and we have a great time breaking down all the wildly interesting characters and salacious plot points in this wonderful adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel. Then we move on to another amazing film from another amazing director for Brian's pick, the Best Picture winner of 1960 - Billy Wilder's THE APARTMENT. A movie as equally daring as REBECCA, this one is also emotionally moving while tackling some serious subjects, all of it spearheading by great directing and powerhouse performances from Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray. Thank you all so much for listening and enjoy the show! Follow us on social media:  Movies for Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @Brianwaves42 Michele Eggen: @micheleeggen

MFL-Imaginary Friends: HARVEY and DROP DEAD FRED

'Ello, snotfaces! Welcome back to Movies for Life where this week we have a wonderful double feature of two movies with very sweet messages at their core, but at the same time are also dealing with some serious stuff. It's all about the power of the imaginary friend and what they represent and can do for just about everyone around them. First up for discussion is Brian's choice of the absolute classic, a movie starring one of the podcast's most talked about actors Jimmy Stewart, 1950's HARVEY. Then it's a childhood classic for Michele's pick, the zany and imaginative DROP DEAD FRED from 1991. We have much more focused discussions about both of these films that hopefully get to the deep meaning that is truly behind them both, so we really hope you enjoy the conversation!  Follow us on social media:  Movies for Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @Brianwaves42 Michele Eggen: @micheleeggen

    MFL-Snowbound: THE GREY and FARGO

It's cold out there! And since it is that winter time of year for many people, we at Movies for Life are bringing you some snowbound movies to talk about. We have a couple of truly great ones this week, starting with Michele's pick of the 2011 survival drama THE GREY. Though it was marketed as just being Liam Neeson vs wolves in the snow, we get into why this movie is really so much more than that and therefore should be talked about a lot more! Then we tackle a true cinematic classic with Brian's choice - the Coen brothers' masterpiece FARGO. There is definitely a lot of imitating of the Minnesota accent, but there's also talk about why Marge is the best character ever, and really just some of our absolute favorite scenes, shots, and lines from this iconic film. So bundle up and enjoy the show! Follow us on social media: Movies for Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @Brianwaves42 Michele Eggen: @micheleeggen

MFL - A Sly Christmas: FIRST BLOOD and COBRA

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Movies for Life listeners! We hope you all are having a wonderful and happy holiday season however you celebrate or don't! Here on the show, we're having a very Sly Christmas by celebrating actor Sylvester Stallone with two movies of his that don't have anything to do with Christmas but take place around the holiday! First we discuss FIRST BLOOD from 1982 directed by Ted Kotcheff. Though the other films in this series just get bigger and bloodier, this first installment is a very serious, dramatic, and yeah still fun movie with an amazing cast all just absolutely killing it. Then we drop all the drama nothing but bonkers fun with the next movie - 1986's COBRA. It's all the cliches you could ever want from an 80s cop action movie, and that's exactly why we love this one. We hope you have fun with this episode, and as always, thank you all so much for listening! MFL - Mysteries: THE LADY VANISHES and THE LAST OF SHEILA

Keeping up with our noir-ish theme for this month, on this week's episode of Movies for Life, we're tackling a couple of Michele's absolute favorite kinds of films - mysteries! And these are some truly banger titles so we know you'll dig them! First up is Brian's choice of an early Hitchcock masterpiece, 1938's THE LADY VANISHES. It's a mystery, it's an espionage thriller, it's a comedy, it's a romance-on-the-road - this movie really has it all and we have a really fun time talking about it! Then we get into Michele's pick which is one of the twistiest and turniest of all the mysteries out there, from 1973 it's THE LAST OF SHEILA! This film has such a genius plot and that's really no surprise considering the minds that it came from; plus the cast is absolutely star-studded as well! We hope you all enjoy this one! MFL - Bank Heists: CASH ON DEMAND and SUGAR & SPICE

This month on Movies for Life we're doing our own version of Noirvember with a couple of episodes about crime and mystery! For our episode this week, we're robbing banks and talking about two very different approaches to the bank heist film. First up for discussion is Brian's choice, the 1961 Hammer film CASH ON DEMAND. This movie has a lot of things that both of us like - Peter Cushing, great character development and exploration, a short runtime, and a single location! It's a wonderful little film that we hope more people will check out. Then we get into Michele's pick, the 2001 dark comedy teen film SUGAR & SPICE! It's a PG-13 movie that still feels like an R movie with the witty and raunchy dialogue. And while it is a hell of a lot of fun to watch and laugh at and with, it's also one that is very clever at what it both plays into and riffs on. We hope you enjoy this pairing! MFL - More Ghost Movies Because

We take a page from our friends at the Pure Cinema Podcast and share ten "Ghost Movies Because" each. These aren't necessarily the best or even our favorites, but movies about ghosts and hauntings that we like, want to shine a light on, and talk about. We had a lot of fun this Halloween season and hope you enjoy this special bonus episode about one of our favorite sub-genres. MFL - Ghost Movies: STIR OF ECHOES and THE CHANGELING

We're back with another spooky season episode for you and another pair of great ghost movies to talk about! Going in reverse chronological order this time, we're starting off with a movie that came out in a banger year for movies - 1999 - and this one is no exception. We're talking STIR OF ECHOES, and all the things that make it a fantastic little gem of a ghost movie. Based on a novel by Richard Matheson, and written and directed for the screen by David Koepp, it's got all the talent behind and in front of the camera and we have a great time dissecting why it all works so well. Then we get into a stone cold classic of the ghost genre with 1980's THE CHANGELING starring George C. Scott. This one gives us not only everything we could want from a ghost/haunted house tale, but also a very deep and emotional look at grief in the main character's story. We've got one more spooky episode left for you before the month ends so keep an eye out for that, and we hope you've enjoyed everything we've put out so far! Happy Halloween! MFL - Haunted House Movies: THE INNOCENTS and THE ORPHANAGE

It's officially spooky season at Movies for Life and we are both READY FOR IT! Both of our favorite subgenre of horror is ghosts so that is what we are doing the whole month here on the pod - with a couple bonus episodes in there for you too! But first we take a look at a couple of haunted house movies, starting with Jack Clayton's THE INNOCENTS from 1961. Iconic haunted house imagery that still works like gangbusters aside, this story is made so much more compelling with its unreliable main characters and the fact that by the end, you're still just not really sure what all has transpired here. Then we talk about a movie that is equally as compelling, the Guillermo del Toro produced and J.A. Bayona directed THE ORPHANAGE from 2007. Is this fairy tale-laden story sad, tragic, bittersweet, or all of these rolled into one at the same time? We had an amazing time talking all horror for the first time in a while on this show and we hope you enjoy this episode and all the other spooky content we have in store for you this month! MFL - High School Reunions: ROMY & MICHELE’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION and THE WORLD’S END

In the second part of our little series all about high school movies, we're taking things a bit into the future with a look at some films about high school reunions. With all the memories and expectations about how our lives should be, this is arguably a more stressful and confusing experience than high school itself, and both of these films capture all of that so well. First we get into Michele's choice and her movie namesake, ROMY & MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION from 1997. It's quirky, it's fun, it's colorful and oh-so 90s, but it still has some pretty profound things to say about life. Then we get into Brian's movie pick from 2013, THE WORLD'S END. The most mature and sometimes most dark film from Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's Cornetto Trilogy, THE WORLD'S END may be about aliens with blue ink inside them on the surface, but underneath it is so much more. MFL - High School: ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL and EASY A

School's back in session so we're celebrating with a look at a couple of high school movies! First we talk about Brian's pick, which is a movie that not only loves movies, but also explores the beautiful intimacy of a close friendship, and the unimaginable struggle of going through cancer - ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL from 2015. Then it's on to Michele's choices, a hilarious comedy with a surprisingly dark side all about rumors, reputations, and double standards - it's EASY A from 2010!  Find us on social media: Movies For Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @Brianwaves42 Michele Eggen: @micheleeggen

MFL - TV for Life: THE SOPRANOS

In this special episode we talk one of the greatest television series of all time, The Sopranos. A game changer in every sense, the show redefined television forever. Michele shares her experiences watching the show for the first time and Brian talks about how rewarding it is to rewatch. We cover the characters, favorite seasons, episodes, lines and speculate about what happened to the characters after the final cut to black. So, wake up, get yourself a gun (or rather your podcast device of choice) and join us for an epic conversation. MFL - Kidventure: THE GOONIES and HEAVYWEIGHTS

What would summer be without a little adventure! And sometimes it's even more fun when it's a "kidventure", so we're going back to our childhoods with this episode on a couple of our favorite kid-led adventure stories. The first one we talk about is probably the quintessential movie in this category - Brian's pick is Richard Donner's THE GOONIES from 1985. You know it, you probably love it, and it was most likely a staple of your childhood, too! We try to pinpoint just why this one still works for us after all these years, whether it be personal connections or just those little moments in the film that really make it special. Then Michele introduces Brian to a favorite from her childhood, 1995's HEAVYWEIGHTS! A throwback to the irreverent movies and TV shows for kids from the 90s, this is one that has really only gotten better over the years because of the important message at its core. Plus, it has one of Ben Stiller's best performances ever, AND a great dance sequence from Paul Fieg, so what's not to love?! Happy listening - and please don't put Twinkies on your pizza. MFL - Horror of 2023 So Far

In this episode we discuss every horror movie of 2023 that we've seen so far and discuss what we've thought of them. It's a lively conversation that gets into the highs and lows of this year's horror films (between January and the end of June) with a few hot takes along the way. But please remember that it's all in good fun, and hey, maybe our opinions could change if we watch the films again! As the both of us are really horror kids at heart, we actually haven't talked about THAT much horror on the show thus far so this conversation was a lot of fun for us and we hope you enjoy listening to it! MFL - Animals Attack: ARACHNOPHOBIA and JAWS

(Note: this episode was recorded a few weeks before it was confirmed that Julian Sands had passed away. RIP) We have some summer fun for this week's episode of Movies for Life where we're talking about a couple of animal attack movies! First, we get into a 90s thrill-omedy that brilliantly walks the line of being legit traumatizing and hilariously fun at the same time - ARACHNOPHOBIA! We have a great time discussing just what makes this film still effective after all these years, the moments that creep us out the most, and the best sidekick character ever, Delbert McLintock. Then we celebrate the 4th of July with the classic film most associated with the holiday, the practically-perfect-in-every-way JAWS! Though we know we can't really say anything about JAWS that hasn't been said before, we do our best by going through some of our favorite scenes and moments with the characters, and even some new thoughts and feelings we had this time around. MFL - School’s Out: Memorable Movie Teachers

We have a special school's out (or almost out in Brian's case) episode of Movies for Life for you this week. Each of us count down five of our favorite movie teachers. Some are good, some are bad, some are in between but all make the movies they're in so much more enjoyable. Remember to hit us up on the socials to let us know some of your favorites! MFL - Baseball Movies: A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN and THE BAD NEWS BEARS

Batter up, Movies for Life listeners, because we're talking about a pair of great baseball movies today on the show! Though there are a lot of movies to pick from in this category, we picked the two that have either touched us the most or, in Michele's case, have meant a lot to us our whole lives. So first up is that movie, Michele's choice of Penny Marshall's A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (1992). This one has a ton of great moments but we try to focus on the core of what makes it a great movie - Tom Hanks' performance, the sister relationship, etc. We also give our answers to the big question about the ending - does Dottie drop the ball on purpose? Then we get into another comedy, one a bit more rough around the edges but still with a lot of heart, and that is THE BAD NEWS BEARS from 1976. This story of an alcoholic Walter Matthau coaching the worst Little League team is equal parts hilarious and heartfelt in its portrayal of relationships and lessons learned while playing the game that is America's past time. MFL - Coming of Age: STAND BY ME and NOW AND THEN

Do you guys wanna go see a dead body?   Well okay, we don't have one to show you but one of the movies we're talking about today does! That's right, we're jumping on our bikes and going on an adventure together as we tackle two coming of age movies. First up is Brian's choice, the seminal, needs-no-introduction classic STAND BY ME from 1986. Then we talk about basically the STAND BY ME for girls, the (in Michele's opinion) overlooked NOW AND THEN from 1995. Both of these movies are filled with great performance by fantastic child actors, and they give us a chance to reminisce about a bygone era from a lot of our childhoods. We hope you enjoy the discussion!
