Description: Hey folks, Gavin Roth here with another episode of the influencers of sponsorship marketing It’s been about a year since my last episode. Let’s just say, work life has gotten in the way of my passion projects. But thrilled to say I’ve been asked by a number of industry friends when I’ll be releasing new episodes. So here we go. My first guest of the new season is Kathy Henderson of Hockey Canada. If Kathy Henderson were a hockey player, she’d likely be a one of those smart, reliable centres… plays a 200-foot game, back-checks, gets teammates involved…great in the locker room and in the community. #47 - Mike Morreale - Commissioner & Co-Founder at the Canadian Elite Basketball League

    Release Date: 10/11/2023

    Duration: 59 Mins

    Authors: Gavin Roth

Description: Gavin Roth here with another episode of the Influencers of Sponsorship Marketing, sponsored by Homestand Sports – authentically connecting iGaming brands with sports fans wherever they are. For more, visit homestandsports.com. I love talking to athletes. Especially the successful ones. And no, not in a creepy fan-boy way. When you spend time with elite athletes, you can’t help but notice what made them that way – their passion, tenacity, drive, competitiveness, work ethic, self-awareness. Mike Morreale – former CFL star and current Commissioner of the CEBL – checks all those boxes. We caught up just after Labour Day, 3 weeks after the culmination of the CEBL’s 2023 campaign – their most successful to date with expansion to 10 teams and a new broadcast deal with TSN. It was also a few days after the CFL Labour Day Classic between the Argos and Ticats. You see… Mike played (and starred) in his share of Labour Day Classics. He actually suited up for both his hometown Tiger-Cats AND their fierce rivals down the QEW. But this year, he had his feet up at home and enjoyed it on the tube. We talk about his days in the CFL where he won 2 Grey Cups and numerous awards. How being a goalkeeper in soccer prepared him for a 12-year career as a receiver in the league. And how his CFL experiences (both as a player and with the CFLPA) set the foundation for his current role running Canada’s only professional basketball league. Mike shines a light on Richard Petko and Ron Foxcroft – 2 men whose belief and support helped Mike build a successful second career. He takes us into a week in the life of a pro sports commissioner. On the corporate partnership front, we discuss how Mike and his colleagues had to sell a vision to brands before the first basket was scored. And the partnerships that have been - and will be - so instrumental to the league’s success. Including a new one with Canadian data insights firm, StellarAlgo that will help the CEBL engage their fans and partners in a more strategic and effective way. And we wrap with great professional development advice centred around self-awareness and relationships. You’ll leave informed and inspired. I hope you enjoy. #37 - Nic Sulsky – Chief Commercial Officer at PointsBet Canada

    Release Date: 5/9/2022

    Duration: 78 Mins

    Authors: Gavin Roth

Description: Nic Sulsky is not short on passion, enthusiasm, and opinion. He also knows the iGaming space as well as anyone… anywhere. Combine those two and you can see why PointsBet – an Australian-owned sportsbook operator – tapped Nic to lead their sales and marketing efforts in Canada. You see, PointsBet entered the Ontario sportsbook waters at a disadvantage to their rivals when the government opened the coveted Ontario market to licensed and regulated operators on April 4 of this year. Their pockets weren’t as deep, and they didn’t have an existing database to convert to paying bettors. So Nic and his team had to be crafty. A couple pillars they leaned on heavily were sponsorships and influencer marketing, quickly snapping up deals with Curling Canada, Alpine Canada, the Trailer Park Boys, NHL Alumni Association and – most recently – MLSE. All part of Nic’s strategy to build a brand wrapped in the Canadian flag. In our chat, Nic shares that strategy and his views on the Ontario sports betting market. We also stepped back and revisited his time as president of the popular disruptor daily fantasy brand, Monkey Knife Fight (any Simpsons fans out there?). A brand that in less than 3 years got purchased by Bally’s for $90 million. The sports betting business in Canada has never been hotter and Nic is the perfect guest to discuss it with. Some terrific insights, fun stories… and even an explanation of how one can be both a Habs fan and a Leafs fan at the same time. I hope you enjoy! #29: Scotiabank on Branded Content and Hockey Sponsorship - Mike Tasevski and Hayes Steinberg

    Release Date: 7/7/2020

    Duration: 47 Mins

    Authors: Gavin Roth

Description: The focus of this episode is Branded Content. Now the concept of branded content is hardly new … brands like Nike and Red Bull have made it a cornerstone of their marketing plans for years. And perhaps unintentionally, they have led a subtle yet important pivot in the execution. More sponsors of branded content have bravely agreed to take a back seat… letting the story take centre stage. And ultimately, that makes the content more authentic and consumable. That is exactly what Scotiabank did with Hockey 24, the beautifully crafted 90 minute documentary that celebrates hockey at every level… and through a diverse range of voices … across this country. I’m joined by 2 key executives associated with the film. Mike Tasevski – Vice President of Global Sponsorships at Scotiabank; and Hayes Steinberg – co-owner & Chief Creative Officer at The Mark – the agency that developed the film We discuss the genesis of the project, the sell-in the Scotiabank and the reason it was so important to the bank as an extension of their deep sponsorship of the NHL. Mike also shares more about his mandate in one of the top sponsorship jobs in the country. And we also discuss their respective journeys, their mentors and their professional development advice. Hayes and Mike are 2 very intelligent people with super-hi EQ. They speak purposely, passionately and eloquently. I hope you enjoy!
