About the Guest:Peter Heslop joins Susan in this episode talking about the changes that we are all becoming aware of, financial pressures experienced by a broad spectrum of individuals,  and the need for support to help with living expenses. He is the Community Manager at Richmond's Influence Church whose staff and willing volunteers are doing sterling work supporting those in need, supplying food parcels, baby bundles, and school uniforms.As Peter stated " The definition of poverty has shifted!" and the demographic of those turning up recently has changed. With recent price rises even those in full time work are finding it hard to manage, some are facing the choice between eating and heating their homes and we're not even into winter yet. Regular food parcel collections are at the Influence church on Thursday evenings, with  the regular time slots between 6 and 8pm. They also hand out advice and can point you towards relevant sources of assistance in these difficult times. This episode features Debbie North, founder of Access the Dales, who, since becoming a wheelchair user, has campaigned tirelessly to break down barriers in all aspects of promoting accessibility for all.After discovering in 2008 that she needed spinal surgery and fearing that she would never be able to walk on the fells again Debbie initially became despondent. Coping with such a changed life now confined to her wheelchair she began writing a blog about the challenges she was facing and called it Access the Dales. This prompted an offer from a friend to get her up to Goredale Scar in her wheelchair and that then inspired Debbie and her husband Andy to begin more challenges and start, as they called it, "making the inaccessible accessible".A coast to coast walk, St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay in 2015 was a huge achievement with Debbie in an All Terrain Hopper and resulted in a book about their journey-  In the spirit of Wainwright. They had walked the coast to coast path twice before Debbies surgery and each time in passing noticed a lovely house near Nateby. They were thrilled to hear that it was up for rent and it then became their new home in 2017.Andy's untimely death in June 2021 hasnt stopped Debbie from forging forward with the plans that they had made together, setting up a charity in Andy's memory and calling it after her blog - Access the Dales. It has just been announced that she has been made a Cabinet Office Disability and Access Ambassador for the countryside. Ambassadors use their influential status as business leaders, to drive improvements to the accessability and quality of services and facilities in their sector for disabled people, as consumers and employees. In this episode Susan interviews Tom Addison over in Wensleydale. Tom is the creator of unique and bespoke items of fine furniture. Tom did his apprenticeship with the renowned Peter Hall and Sons, over in Kendal, before relocating and setting up his own business, TA Fine Furniture, near Askrigg in the Yorskshire dales.As a youngster Tom was a keen fell runner, following in his parents footsteps, and starting at the age of 4. Realising that the more effort he put into his training the better results he could expect, Tom forwent partying and socialising with his friends in his teens in order to concentrate on his training, ultimately achieving the highest recognition by becoming English Fell Running Champion in 2014.Tom seems to put his all into whatever he does, taking inspiration from the dales landscapes he produces beautiful items of furniture. By having his workshop attached to his home he is able to spend quality time with his wife and young daughters and somehow still manages to fit in some fellrunning!The wood Tom uses is sustainably sourced and as local as possible from the National Park near Settle - The Wonder of Wood. Today's episode is with Yvonne Macdonald, one of the coordinators running Richmondshire's  branch of Home Start. This is a charitable organisation supporting families with young children and their aim is for every parent to have the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life. Home Start is a global organisation and started in the Uk in 1973. It grew in strength and now there are approximately 200 branches throughout the UK. It is also a worldwide organisation operating in 22 countries.The local Richmondshire branch was set up in 2009, has Baroness Brenda Hale as a patron, and in 2020 was awarded the prestigious Queen's award for Voluntary Services. This award was in recognition for all the sterling work that has been carried out by the staff and volunteers. Due to Covid restrictions in 2020, an invitation to attend the Buckingham Palace Garden Party was delayed until this year, and has just recently been attended by a longstanding local volunteer. Listen in to hear about the work carried out by the volunteers as well as the challenges faced by the coordinators to raise funds to keep the branch going. In this episode Susan talks to award winning author and entrepeneur Hannah Russell. Hannah started writing a blog about Little Alf, her minature shetland pony, when she was aged 16 and had her first book published at the age of 17. Since then she has written a series of books, 14 at the time of this interview. This includes an autobiographical account of life with Little Alf who has helped her over many of the challenges and ups and downs of recent years.Hannah has a small menagerie of rescue pets in the Yorkshire dales and they provide inspiration for her stories as well as actively being featured with her online.Hannah believes in helping others and is an ambassador for 3 charities, Helping Rhinos, Brooke Action for working horses, donkeys and mules and Wild Welfare.She is also a charity fundraiser raising awareness for Sarcoma Cancer, recently having surgery and radiotherapy herself when she was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2020. Thankfully she is now in remission.At the age of 25 she is a bundle of energy, designing clothing ranges to raise funds for the charities she supports and is soon about to launch a Wild and Country clothing range. In this episode Susan chats with extreme wild swimmer Stuart Gledhill. Stuart is one of the founder members of the Dales Dippers swim group based in the Yorkshire dales and has been swimming oudoors since he was very young. Stuart is also a Brigantes Courier driver and in the summer months this gives him ample opportunity to check out new swimming places and if he has enough time he fits in swims between drops.In light of the more recent surge in popularity of this sport Stuart talks about safety whilst swimming and the need to be aware of cold water shock. This is the automatic response that your body can have to cold water. Every day in such cold temperatures is quite an achievement.He also went to the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships in March this year and won a silver medal in the breast stroke section. A large proportion of her time has been taken up with a 100 wild swim challenge, mainly in the Yorkshire dales, raising funds for Wateraid. This coming weekend Richmond Mayfest is being celebrated. It is the town's newest annual event, a festival of historical and traditional music taking place in and around Richmond over the early May Bank Holiday weekend. Concerts, folk sessions, wandering minstrels, maypole and morris dancing, medieval tavern, ceilidh, in venues from The Market Place to The Station and to The Castle, with many points in between. Lots of the events are totally free, and there are reduced prices for local residents at all the ticketed events.Then from 28th May to 11th June the Swaledale Festival is back celebrating its 50th anniversery with a diverse programme of music, arts and walking events. This episode features Topic UK founder and editor Gill Laidler. Susan and Gill talk about the aims of the non profit magazine and how it came into being over 7 years ago. Gill and her business partner were handling PR, marketing accounts and graphic design  when they became aware that there was a lack of affordable platforms upon which local SMEs could share their information. Initially the magazine was just for Wakefield and district, however the demand for further coverage prompted the development of a Yorkshire wide publication. So Topic UK was born as a bimonthly magazine, published on alternate months, informing businesses across the Yorkshire Region, and featuring Yorkshire SMEs. Going from strength to strength the regular print run now is 10,000 copies. About the Guest:When Gill left school she worked in marketing for an advertising agency and by the age of 20 was running the agency and managing ten staff. She then worked producing staff magazines for Morrisons and Yorkshire television before setting up in business as Ghost Communications with her business  partner  handling PR, marketing and graphic design. This company was run in tandem with Topic UK until Topic became so busy that it took over as their main business. This episode comes to you from Mozambique. Susan was surprised to discover that the conversations she had been having with Sam Hollis during networking meetings were actually taking place remotely from Mozambique. The story behind Sam's move to relocate, with his wife and two children, as organised a decision and process as that could be, took an unexpected turn when they were warned that South Africa was about to close down its airports due to lockdown. No spoiler alert here...they did make it but not quite in the timescale they anticipated. About the Guest:Sam is a web designer and usually living in Yorkshire. He and his family have moved temporarily to Mozambique where he is still running his business remotely. He did actually confide that internet provision is better in Maputo than it was in his home in Yorkshire and due to the current lockdown situation no one is surprised that he is not working out of an office. Sam provides a pay as you go website design service which helps those in business who cannot afford the upfront cost of having a website designed for them.Sam has travelled extensively in the past on kayaking expeditions and also talks about some of the trips he has taken following this hobby. An interesting episode going behind the scenes discussing the challenges of editing a local monthly magazine. In this episode we talk with Mike Barden who has taken on the role of editor for the Reeth and District Gazette. This is a challenging role and Susan and Mike discuss his individual take on it. The conversation ranges from mental health issues, homeworking and Fujitsu, to Monty Python and UFOs. Editing the Gazette has proven to be a challenge that he finds helps to keep his active mind and predisposition to anxiety at bay. Fairhursts catering has, like many other businesses,been hit by the current lockdown. They have been in the business of providing delicious food since the 80's and specialise in catering for events and weddings. Working out from their kitchen in Swinithwaite, in Wensleydale, they would usually be busy serving teas and catering for weddings at Bolton Castle as well as running their popular farmshop and cafe at Berrys. This year was projected to be one of their best so far with over 30 weddings and most weekends booked, however no one could have predicted the situation we all currently find ourselves in.So what to do? Have you ever wanted to own an English pub but couldn't afford the investment? Well 167 investors have bought shares in a pub in the Yorkshire dales and can now say that they part own the King's Head pub in Swaledale. Gunnerside's popular pub has had a chequered history and in this episode Susan talks with Tracey Westgarth about the process the local community went through to turn their village pub into a community owned one.The King's head is now tenant run and community owned but faces the challenges all public houses face at this present time during lockdown. The purchase process began last September and the community support has been tremendous. Shares were released in February 2020 and within 5 days the share offer was oversubscribed, and now has a waiting list in reserve. At a time when all pubs are closed the enthusiasm of the committee has ensured that the purchase still went ahead in order to secure the deal. Advice and support was enlisted from the Plunkett Foundation who were involved from the start of the project. Also the team from The George and Dragon in Hudswell, a hugely successful local community owned pub, were happy to share their experience and advise the commitee on how to proceed with managing their membership. The guest in this episode is Adam Fisher and he talks to Susan about his impression of the ghost town of Pripyat during his scientific tour of Chernobyl. Animals have taken over the area, moving in after humans moved out. Wildlife such as lynx, elk and wolves now roam the wasteland. Susan chats with Carol Tetlow in this week's episode about her life as a GP and her journey to becoming a published author. Carol persevered sending off her manuscripts to publishers and resisted the temptation to self publish. She was eventually rewarded with a contract from a Canadian publisher for her medical series set in fictitious Lambdale and the Teviotdale medical centre.Since this episode was recorded, Carol's new series about tennis club intrigue, written originally for her sister, has been taken on by a UK publisher and we expect that to be released soon.About the Guest:Carol has retired from general practice, and lives in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales with four labradors, two cats, ten donkeys, two ponies but just the one very long-suffering husband. In this episode we feature two tracks from Fourum's popular music and Susan talks to Jim Jack about how the band started in 1972 and quickly grew in popularity. The name of the band came initially from the latin word Forum meaning a meeting place, with the addition of the extra letter U to distinguish from other groups. In this episode Susan follows on from last week by talking to Ted Grainger, the third founding member of the Veteran's Woodcraft group supporting people affected by their military service. Also interviewed today are two further members of the group, Andy and Matt. .. all three talk openly about their mental health struggles with PTSD since leaving service. The veterans also help in the community by providing outreach support to mental health groups in the area, teaching woodcraft skills and giving theraputic support to those in need. They are taking part in a bid for lottery funding through the People's Project - Woodwork Warriors and need your votes to secure funding to further grow their reach and increase the support that they can offer.Set-up by a group of veterans, Veterans Woodcraft delivers woodcraft courses to help veterans who have been physically and mentally affected by their military service.By working with wood, they help them rebuild their lives, grow in confidence and develop their resilience to help them recover and lead active, fulfilling lives.About the Guests:Ted Grainger is the technical director of the company using sophisticated CNC software and equipment to create intricate items of wood carving. He is ex RAF and has studied CNC and CAD to reach a high level of proficiency in the use of the Legacy machines. Ted very openly discusses his PTSD and how it has impacted his life over the years.Andy was an army chef and good naturedly accepts that this can put him on the receiving end of banter from his fellow Woodcraft Warriors. He enjoys the camaraderie and supportive environment in which he and fellow members can relax and flourish whilst learning new skills. Andy gives back by helping support new members and also helps with outreach activities.Matt Wightman first met the group's founding members at Phoenix House Recovery Centre in Catterick, where Help for Heroes runs its recovery services in the North. He suffered badly having a fellow serviceman and room mate commit suicide at the age of 19 whilst serving in Ireland. His later service in Bosnia only increased the pressure upon him, the result in later life was PTSD. In this episode Susan talks to Janet Phillips whose entrepreneurial spirit led her to set up a hugely successful business in Hong Kong. In this episode Susan talks to Leyburn artist Lynn Ward, whose first job out of art college was painting the underworld murals in The Forbidden Corner in Coverdale. Lynn has had a prolific career and embraced many different styles over the years painting for commissioned projects.About the Guest:Lynn is Yorkshire born and bred and has spent most of her life living in Wensleydale. She attended art college, first in York and afterwards at Cleveland before embarking upon a career which led her underground, painting murals and creating statues during the inception of The Forbidden Corner. Having recently lost a family member to cancer he is now dedicating his spare time to raising funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Ramsay's fish and chip van has become an institution in the dales with regular clientele looking forward to their weekly visits. Unfortunately for dales folk the business is now up for sale and we all hope that the new owners will continue this much loved service.About the Guest:Pauline had worked in a fish and chip shop as a young lass prior to taking on the mobile van but is was a steep learning curve for her and husband Richard when they took on the business. They have developed it into a thriving mobile takeaway service for those in the dales who rely upon them in order to have a night off cooking.Pauline shares their journey and gives us an insight into this family business with even the youngest members having an input into the van's design.
