Paul’s final time with the elders of Ephesus include him sharing his concerns and encouragements for the church. And his final words to them were, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Out of all the words Paul could have quoted from Jesus, why did he choose to highlight generosity as literal last words?

Today’s text illustrates a stunning reversal. In this life a rich man is feasting, and a poor man is starving. In this life a rich man is clothed with fine linen, while a poor man is covered in sores. But when both men die the rich man ends up tormented in hell, while the poor man is comforted in heaven. This story serves as a warning against indifference and greed. And it also serves as a reminder that in eternity God’s justice will right every wrong in this life.

From the shoes we never wear to the upgrades we don’t need, one commentator wrote, “We’ve moved past the things we want and need and are now buying those things that have nothing to do with our lives.” Join us as we answer these critical questions–What is covetousness and greed?
