Jesus Stories; Jesus in the Old Testament Wilderness

This week, we continue our new series titled "Jesus Stories", where we look at the transformative power of Jesus, how He is present in all of scripture and our lives today. Throughout the Israelites' journey in the wilderness, God has been preparing them for their entry to the promised land. Just as they are about to enter, Moses delivers one final message to the people from God. It's made clear to the people that they are to enter with confidence in their provider, with a healthy fear of Him, and ready for conflict. Throughout the Israelites' journey in the wilderness, they have been the recipients of God's guidance and provision, whether it was a cloud, a pillar of fire, or rain of manna. Originally in the Garden of Eden, God's original desire was to be with us in harmony and peace. In the desert, God is leading His people and teaching them by showing them who He is and who they really are. This week, we see God descend upon His people and the Israelites reaction. They don't complain but stand before Him in fear and terror. But our relationship with God is not left in this same state. Jesus came down to earth once again to be our substitute and pave a path for us to God, where forgiveness can be found. As the Israelites wandered through the wilderness, their complaints against Moses and God led to them being overrun by snakes and crying to God to save them. They were provided a bronze snake that they could look to for healing. As the Israelites wandered through the wilderness, their cries for water turned from complaints to demands for justice, that someone must pay for all the suffering they've had to endure. In hindsight, we can look back and wonder how the Israelites, in their moment of pain, couldn't remember how God had just provided manna or delivered them from Egypt. But we too are susceptible to being just like the Israelites, living in tension and fear of the unknown and the future. As the Israelites began wandering through the wilderness, they cried out for food out of anger and fear, seemingly forgetting their miraculous deliverance from Egypt. Moses let the people know the Lord would provide manna to them, so long as they followed His rules about the manna. This story points us to Jesus, the true and eternal manna sent from heaven. He not only solves our problems here and now, but eternally. The crossing of the Red Sea draws many parallels to other stories in the Bible, like the creation story and life of Moses. It also paints a picture of the resurrection of Jesus. However, one key difference was that Jesus exemplified trust and following God's will, which the Israelites did not. As we look at the story of God delivering His people out of Egypt, we can see how this pointed towards Jesus being the promised savior. God was just and loving to the Israelites and those in Egypt, as He both required a price to be paid but also was loving to allow a substitute to take their place. God did not merely liberate them, but set them free to live with their eyes on God. We are joined by guest speaker Nick Cady of White Fields Community Church as he shares how the gospel message was present during Abraham's test of faith. It revealed to Abraham and Isaac the true essence of faith that Abraham had and the submission that Isaac showed in response.
