JobsWorth - Cassie Strickland and Dominic Foster- They Built the Kind of Gym They Couldn’t Find
This week on JobsWorth, I’m joined by Cassie Strickland and Dominic Foster, personal trainers and co-owners of Studio Athletica. What makes this conversation interesting is that neither of them fit the stereotype people often associate with the fitness industry. Cassie admits she actively avoided PE at school, while Dominic describes himself as “bang average” at sport before stumbling into fitness after nearly being kicked out of school. Together, they’ve gone on to build Studio Athletica… a training space designed for people who don’t feel comfortable in traditional gyms. We talk about the reality of working in the fitness industry, the surprisingly low barrier to entry, and why most people only survive in it long term if they genuinely care about helping others. We also get into gym-timidation (yep, you read that right), the pressure PTs feel to “look the part,” and the lessons they learned from working in some very questionable gyms along the way. Cassie also shares the story of opening her first dream studio… and losing it almost immediately because of a hidden basement beneath the floor. Please enjoy… Cassie and Dom. JobsWorth - Dan Nunn & Kane Read - When It’s Not the Job… It’s the Environment
This week on JobsWorth, I’m joined by Dan Nunn and Kane Reed, founders of 5 Physio. Both Dan and Kane knew from a young age that physiotherapy was the path they wanted to follow. What’s interesting is how that shared direction played out… through different environments, frustrations within the profession, and eventually coming back together to build something of their own. We talk about the realities of working in physio, from early experiences in the NHS to recognising the limitations within the industry and deciding to take a different route. We also get into what it’s like building a business with a friend, how they found their roles, navigated early friction, and built a partnership based on trust and clear “lanes”. Along the way, we touch on mistakes, growth, and why sometimes it’s not the job you fall out of love with… it’s where you’re doing it. Please enjoy… Dan and Kane. JobsWorth - Jordan Gray - A Career in Music, Comedy and Beyond
This week on JobsWorth, I’m joined by Jordan Gray. Jordan is a musical comedian, writer and performer whose career has taken her from fronting a death metal band as a teenager, to releasing multiple albums, reaching the semi-finals of The Voice, and going on to create her Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominated show Is It A Bird? In this episode, we explore what that journey has really looked like. From finding early validation through music, to building a career in the industry, experiencing the reality of success and how that can feel very different behind the scenes. We also talk about the moment things started to feel a bit flat, despite everything appearing to go in the right direction, and what led her to step away from music and move into comedy. Along the way, we get into identity, performance, the pressure that comes with being seen, and how her relationship with work has evolved over time. There are also some brilliant moments throughout from school death metal bands to live performance stories and everything in between. Please enjoy… Jordan Gray. JobsWorth - Carol Smillie - On Work, Family and Finding What Comes Next
This week on JobsWorth, I’m joined by Carol Smillie. Best known for presenting Changing Rooms at its peak, Carol’s career has taken her from modelling to television, into business, and now into a completely different chapter as a humanist celebrant. In this episode, we talk about how those transitions actually happened… not as part of a grand plan, but by taking opportunities, backing herself, and figuring things out along the way. We get into the reality behind some of her biggest career moments, including landing her early TV roles, the success of Changing Rooms, and what it was like working in television at that time. But we also explore what came next. Carol shares her experience of starting and growing a business from scratch, the role naivety can play when trying something new, and why having control over your time and work has become more important as her career has evolved. We also talk about: ● The importance of confidence and people skills early on ● Learning on the job and adapting as you go ● The value of being easy to work with ● Why not every opportunity needs to be taken ● Finding work that fits around life, not the other way round There are also some brilliant stories along the way… including the audition that nearly went wrong, and what actually got her the job. This is a conversation about longevity, perspective, and building a working life that changes as you do. JobsWorth - Ian and Charlie Patterson
This week on JobsWorth, I’m joined by Ian and Charlie Patterson, the husband-and-wife team behind Little Fin Coffee Roastery. This one’s been a long time coming, and it didn’t disappoint.A little over a year after opening their first coffee shop, we sit down to discuss how roasting beans in their garage led to them supplying speciality coffee, machines, and equipment to over 80 businesses across Essex and beyond. We learn what led Ian to leave a super-secure job after seventeen years, how he and Charlie dealt with the transition from more traditional employment to growing a start-up, and find out what they’ve learned about making the move into hospitality.Between running a roastery, a coffee shop, the wholesale side of the business, and raising two kids (oh, and I forgot to mention that Charlie also runs her own cleaning business), I ask how the pair keep all of their plates spinning. Stay tuned for a super-relatable answer.Little Fin has quickly become synonymous with amazing customer service and that is, in no small part, down to the incredible team Ian and Charlie have built. That being the case, it was only right to get them involved in this week’s game. Please enjoy… Ian and Charlie. The JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

But it’s taken time, mistakes and a whole lot of learning to get there. We explore the variety of jobs Hamid took on before entering the world of hospitality, how they shaped his approach to leading his own team, and why he’s a big believer that failure in business is just part of the process. We also learn how an experience at a US fast food restaurant changed Hamid’s approach to staff development, why health and wellness are key to him staying focused, and why achieving work–life balance…at least in the early days of running a business…is nigh on impossible. Please enjoy… Hamid Oukili.

JobsWorth - Rory Emery
My guest on JobsWorth this week is Rory Emery – founder of The Moment Posters.Rory, in his own words, has always been a bit of a wheeler-dealer, but don’t let the label fool you… Del Boy he most certainly is not.The very definition of a self-starter, Rory has taken his love of film, as well as an appreciation for art and history, and created a business that sees him source rare and vintage movie posters for clients across the globe. We find out how his fascination with James Bond led to him working at a top London gallery, ask why he decided to go it alone and start his own business in the first place, and I ask for some investment advice for anyone looking to start their own poster collection… thank me later. We also explore how he’s handled setbacks, a volatile US market and ensuring he plays to his strengths, and Rory shares how his ADHD diagnosis led to a much better understanding of how to manage productivity and feelings of self-doubt.Oh, and we’ve got a 007-themed game for you all at the end (see if you can beat Rory’s score 👀)Please enjoy… Rory Emery.

JobsWorth - Emily Koppit and Jessica Bond
This week I’m joined by Emily Koppit and Jessica Bond, experiential creatives and founders of Nine Productions. In a world where we digest so much information through our screens, Em and Jess have built a brand committed to amplifying human connection through engaging, immersive, and sensational events. Prepare to be inspired — and reminded that sometimes you just need to get out of your own way.We talk about the freedom to make mistakes, being intentional about the experience you gather throughout your career, and the influence of strong female role models in a male-dominated industry - as well as how Em and Jess feel about stepping into that role themselves. Please enjoy… Emily and Jess.

JobsWorth - Laura Hart Raja
Our first guest of 2026 is naturopath, colon hydrotherapist and business owner, Laura Hart-Raja.Laura’s episode has been a long time in the making. We first sat down towards the end of 2024 and had an amazing conversation that never saw the light of day (blame the dodgy USB cable and, errr, me).But she is back, this time at Leigh Marina, with the Thames Estuary as our backdrop and the grey December sky really doing its thing. We learn about the people who inspired her growing up, her earlier career as a private nanny, and why wellness and nutrition have been a focus of hers from a young age.We also find out what led her to explore a career as a naturopath, hear about the moment she shed her imposter syndrome to start her own business, and we find some time to bust a few myths surrounding colonics too. Laura is our first guest to ever get excited (openly, at least) about poo. But despite her specific set of skills, it is her desire to help people that has made her so passionate about what she does for work, and (I can say this, having had first-hand experience) so very bloody good at it.Please enjoy… Laura Hart-Raja.The JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

He’s on a mission to help people reconnect with nature, to educate us on how to create edible ecosystems in even the most urban environments, and to remind us of the joy that comes from getting our hands dirty. We talk about the events that led him from a job in construction to transforming an allotment on the edge of London into a micro-farm, what made him jump on a plane to a rainforest straight out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and why he’s so passionate about encouraging everyone to grow their own fruit and veg. From managing farming projects overseas, teaching people how to grow mushrooms in storage containers, to converting anything and everything into thriving edible landscapes - and being featured in publications from the RHS to Grand Designs - it’s clear Jack has found his calling.Get ready - I challenge even the least green-fingered among you to listen to this conversation and not feel inspired to start growing. Please enjoy… Jack Hodgson.

JobsWorth Live at Read-On-Sea
This week’s episode of JobsWorth is a special one.Not only do I get to sit down with a panel of guests I admire, love and respect… this time I did it in front of an actual audience at our very first LIVE event.Hosted at the beautiful Read on Sea, an independent bookshop in the heart of Leigh, I’m joined by previous guests (and fan favourites) Charlotte Debond Sayer and Luke Adam Hawker, as well as the founder of our venue for the evening, Manuel Scettri.I ask if they can remember the moment they knew it was time to change their relationship with work, get their thoughts on imposter syndrome and how to overcome it, find out whether they agree with the statement “everyone is winging it”, and learn whether they now know what they want to be when they grow up.We also explore whether the perfect work–life balance exists, get our panel’s thoughts on whether a permanent job really offers more security than working for yourself, and we even squeeze in a Q&A.A huge thank you to Read on Sea for hosting us, our incredible panel, and the best audience we could have asked for.Together we raised £300 for local children’s cancer charity Gold Geese. You can find out more about the incredible work they do via the link below:https://goldgeese.org/Please enjoy… JobsWorth LIVE.The JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

JobsWorth - Claire Jeavons
On JobsWorth this week, I sit down with Claire Jeavons – an Essex based business owner who has been running bricks and mortar retail stores in the heart of Leigh on Sea for over 17 years.Claire had a passion for fashion (sorry) from a young age, yet it was her love of window dressing - and her ability to tell a story through this very specific medium – that kick started her path in retail and ultimately led to a job with a certain Swedish flat pack furniture giant. We talk about growing up with a business, the importance of the relationships you build at work, and becoming the go-to person because of your experience and ability… and how that can impact your sense of identity when it’s taken away.Just eight months after being made redundant, Claire was handed the keys to her very own store. In the years that followed, it would become an extension of her, her family, and the community that has grown around it. Claire, in her own words, loves what she does and doesn’t view it as work - yet her success hasn’t come without sacrifice. We explore what that’s looked like over the years, as well as hearing her views on competition, collaboration, and what makes Leigh on Sea so special. Please enjoy… Claire Jeavons.

JobsWorth - Leanne Reardon
My guest on JobsWorth this week is Leanne Reardon, founder of Flow State Office.Leanne is on a mission to help business founders find their state of flow - but unlike so many people peddling a similar message, she’s honest about the fact she’s still searching for hers.Secondary school left her directionless and demotivated (something many of you might relate to), yet a stroke of serendipity during work experience led her to discover a role filled with meaning and purpose. Unfortunately, restructures and redundancy forced her to recalibrate what work would look like going forward. We talk about grief and the trauma that period still carries for her.Leanne’s second act began after a life-changing retreat that led to her first role outside local authority work - and acted as the catalyst for the path she’s on today. Hers is a story of resilience, having the courage to try something new, and trusting your intuition. We dig into what Leanne means by seasons in your business, explore the importance of setting boundaries and building self-trust, and consider why - in an age where our brains are constantly bombarded with information - introducing systems in both our work and personal lives is more important than ever. Please enjoy… Leanne Reardon.

JobsWorth - Keith James
On this week’s episode of JobsWorth, I’m speaking to artisan bike mechanic and founder of Essex-based Stow Velo, Keith James.Keith is a self-confessed bike geek, and despite me being very clearly out of my league when it came to discussing anything more technical than how many wheels they have, his passion for the craft and cycling culture was truly infectious.Since relocating to Leigh-on-Sea with his family, Keith has been on a mission to nurture and support the growth of the cycling community- and if he can get me seriously contemplating sliding into some Lycra, it’s only a matter of time before we’re all joining his monthly social rides.Keith is a creative at heart, and if the dots between that and “bike mechanic” don’t immediately connect for you, just wait until you hear about the many strings to his bow.We find out where his obsession with bikes came from, how his love for cycling led him to work in product and apparel design for some of the industry’s biggest brands, and I ask whether all bike messengers working in London are a little bit mad. (The answer won’t surprise you.)We also discuss the reality of picking up your young business, leaving your original customer base behind, and starting again somewhere new. Please enjoy… Keith James.#jobsworth #podcast #career #worklife #storiesthatinspirechangeThe JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

JobsWorth - Henry Knock
On JobsWorth this week, I sit down with London-based freelance photographer, Henry Knock.Henry is one of a small handful of people who have managed to turn their passion into a career. I’ve been guilty in the past of labelling this exclusive group as ‘lucky’- yet we often forget that there’s an untold story of how they got there in the first place.I’ve learned to replace ‘lucky’ with brave, courageous, tenacious, and a whole host of other words that don’t leave you feeling as if these opportunities just fell into their lap.In Henry’s case, there was a time when he was confident he’d already landed his dream job. Yet, despite his love for the industry he was working in, he regularly felt overwhelmed, anxious and, in his own words, like he was ‘drowning’. For a lot of our followers, that might just resonate. His career transformation started just as Instagram was in its infancy. For someone who now has over a decade of experience working with global sports, fashion and lifestyle brands, Henry’s first foray into photography all began on his iPhone. We explore Henry’s experience of education and why he so often felt anything but inspired; what it was like growing up with two ultra-creative parents (and being predicted an F in GCSE Art); and his earlier jobs in hospitality and events. We also talk about the realities of life as a freelancer, how you know it’s the right time to turn a side hustle into a full-time job, the resilience you need to deal with time between projects, and why there’s truth behind the proverb ‘never work with children and animals’.Please enjoy… Henry Knock.#jobsworth #podcast #career #worklife #storiesthatinspirechangeThe JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

JobsWorth - James Wall
My guest on JobsWorth this week is James (Jimbo) Wall, owner of Leigh-on-Sea-based coffee shop/wine shop/deli… shop (that doesn’t sound quite right, but I’m rolling with it)- North.Jimbo has been working in hospitality for over 24 years. It’s an industry that was once viewed by many as a stopgap- somewhere to bring in a bit of money while you figured out what you really wanted to do with your life. I ask Jimbo how he thinks that perception has evolved over the years, and why, in his case, it meant so much more. From waiting tables at Pizza Hut to managing bars in some of the best spots in Leeds and London, Jimbo’s story is one of hard graft, grit, and determination. We find out what brought him south in the first place, the events that led him to call Leigh-on-Sea home, and how an idea that took root early in his career became an old watch shop in need of a whole lot of TLC.‘Not another f**king coffee shop’ It’s a phrase Jimbo heard often from passersby as he was getting ready to open. How did he deal with it? Well, the answer might surprise you.Like so many independent shops in this little corner of Essex, North has its own character- an identity that, in no small part, has been created, curated, and breathed into life by Jimbo and, by extension, the community he’s built around the brand.North will soon be celebrating its second birthday and with Jimbo at the helm, I’ve no doubt it’ll have many more. Please enjoy… Jimbo Wall.#jobsworth #podcast #career #worklife #storiesthatinspirechangeThe JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

JobsWorth - Richard Cooper
This week on JobsWorth I’m sitting down with Richard Cooper, Founder and Managing Director of Essex based marketing agency, The OnCrowd. When Rich landed his first job in the early noughties, marketing looked very different to what it is today. He’s seen a whole heap of changes over the last two decades and as his own business celebrates its thirteenth anniversary the pace of change is only getting faster. In this episode I ask Rich what it was about marketing that lured him in in the first place, why after seven years of working in industry he decided to jump over the other side of the fence and work for a creative agency and we discuss the events that led him to starting The OnCrowd in the first place.Just five years into running his business Rich became a Dad. We talk about the transition to fatherhood and the impact it had on worklife balance, boundaries and his definition of success. Rich’s wanderlust has taken him all over the world but we explore why he chose to set up shop in Leigh on Sea and what it is that makes the local community so special. It’s this sense of community that has become the catalyst for a very special project Rich and his team have been working on and fortunately for us he was very happy to tell all. Please enjoy... JobsWorth - George Artemi
This week on JobsWorth I’m joined by Roll Boys founder George Artemi, our first ever returning guest. In a little under 12 months since our first conversation aired, George has gone on to put his sensational cinnamon roll brand on the map.We pick up his story where we left off last time and learn how he finally secured a spot in the city to realise his dream of taking Roll Boys to London before what can only be described as the brands meteoric rise during his ten-month residency at Saint Espresso in Hackney Wick.George’s is a story of determination, overcoming self-doubt and an unwavering commitment to achieving his goal, yet he doesn’t shy away from showcasing some of the mistakes he makes along the way and it’s this that makes him, and the journey he’s on, even more endearing.October marks a new chapter for George and the growing Roll Boys team and as this episode drops he’ll be days from a very exciting launch-but I’ll let him tell you about that.Pleas enjoy…George Artemi…again.#jobsworth #podcast #career #worklife #storiesthatinspirechangeThe JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

JobsWorth - Andy Gooch and Kirsty Williamson
JobsWorth is back and on this week’s episode I’m joined by Andy Gooch and Kirsty Williamson of Essex based creative agency, Ultra Studio.Like so many businesses, Ultra was born out of necessity. A way for Andy to work on one of his first major projects out of university. Little did he know that thirteen years down the line it would have grown into what it is today.Andy, by his own admission, benefited from having a clear idea of what he wanted to be when he grew up from a relatively young age. Kirsty’s ‘journey’ (a word neither are comfortable with by the way) was a little more…squiggly. And it’s one that a lot of you will be able to relate to.We talk about university, and whether it’s an essential step to kick start a career in a creative field. We explore how Kirsty and Andy define success and how that’s evolved over the years. We also discuss the impact of becoming parents on their never ending battle for work life balance. The pair have now worked together for over seven years and in 2024 they decided to add another string to the Ultra Studio bow in the form of their skate inspired clothing brand, Super Ultra Cool.I ask them what it is about certain types of people that forces them to find more work for themselves and whether they’ve worked out what ‘enough’ looks like for them. Please enjoy... JobsWorth - Lucy O’Brien
My guest on JobsWorth this week is Lucy O’Brien, Director of Essex based creative agency, Social It. At just twenty three years old, Lucy has already built a reputation for helping brands and businesses of all shapes and sizes share their story and in turn, raise their profile. We learn about Lucy’s time in private education and how her experiences helped to shape the woman she is today. We talk about the universal struggle most people feel navigating college when they really have no idea what they want to do with their lives and we also find out how Lucy landed an opportunity that would change everything. Lucy is reluctant to label herself as a social media specialist despite Instagram playing a big role in her day to day work with clients. After having this conversation I can understand why. She is, first and foremost, a storyteller. It’s her ability to connect with people, not to understand an algorithm, that sets her apart...and she's just getting started. JobsWorth - Samantha Ford
This week’s guest is Essex based tattooist and Director of Silver Needles tattoo studio, Sam Ford.As a second generation tattooist it’s safe to say that the art form is quite literally in her blood and she’s seen a whole host of changes over the course of her twenty year career. We talk about some of them as well as finding out what led Sam to start an apprenticeship in the first place, how she found working with her Dad, her thoughts on some of the stereotypes surrounding the industry and why the past couple of years have been particularly tough for tattooists in general. I ask Sam what it’s been like running her own studio for the past seventeen years, get some insight on how she strikes the right balance between work and life and find out about how she expresses herself creatively outside of the studio (the answer might surprise you). Stick around for our game at the end and apologies in advance if one of your tattoos are featured (ffs don’t sue me). JobsWorth - Bee O'Dame
On this week’s episode of JobsWorth, I’m joined by Hair and Makeup artist, Bee O’Dame.Bee certainly knows how to make an impression. From the moment she walked in to record the podcast, she quite literally lit up the room. She’s someone who exudes confidence, isn’t afraid to be herself, and will quite happily show someone the door if they’re not willing to accept who she is. And in a world where so many of us pander to other people’s perceptions of how to act, what to wear, or who to be… it’s really bloody refreshing. But building the confidence to be yourself takes hard work, and in Bee’s own words, she’s made a lot of mistakes. Fortunately, she’s also learned from them.Bee is a doer. She makes sht happen. She, in all the best possible ways, is a force of nature, and over the years (two careers, four kids, and a twenty-year relationship with her husband Vic), she’s worked a lot of sht out.We explore her early passion for fashion, how she built a successful career for herself in the city, and why she stepped away from it to raise her family and begin again in a space where she could let her creativity flourish. We talk about red carpet events, zombie movies, the impact of YouTube, the power of saying yes to opportunities, learning as you go, and Bee’s view that confidence comes from capability. Please enjoy... This week on JobsWorth, I’m sitting down with Ben Nichols and Alice Skeats, co-founders of Re:Made.Ben and Alice are a couple from Essex, and theirs is a love story that started like so many others in the twenty-first century – on Bumble. After meeting during the pandemic, and despite the not insignificant hurdle of lockdowns and social distancing, their relationship blossomed. Then, a little over two years ago, Ben had an idea.We explore what happened next: from the creation of their first prototype product to the celebration of Re:Made’s second birthday a few weeks ago.Ben and Alice give an honest account of what it’s like growing a business as a couple, the sacrifices you have to make when choosing to pursue a passion, and we also discuss when it’s the right time to make a side hustle your full-time gig.As well as creating a brand that has already become synonymous with high-quality products and incredibly happy customers, Alice and Ben have also built a community. If their early success is anything to go by, it’s clear to see that they’re just getting started.Keep an eye out for a very special guest at the start of this episode He loved it, I promise. On JobsWorth this week, I’m joined by Leigh on Sea based sign writer, illustrator and artist, Anneka Lange.Since moving to Leigh from the West Country seven years ago, Annie has become the go to person for anyone looking to have a piece of artwork adorn their shop, office, building, boat, bedroom… oh, and basketball court. We explore what it was like growing up in Cheltenham with a family of creatives, how she honed her craft at university before landing her first ‘proper’ job with a well known brand, and the importance of working alongside people who give you opportunities to push your limits.Annie also shares what brought her to this part of Essex, how she landed her first client after arriving, and why- despite being a super busy working mum of two- she’s got her sights set on developing a side project fusing her love of art, sport and clothing.Whilst you might sometimes see Annie up a ladder, on a scaffold or somewhere in the vicinity of her trusty toolbox, she’s rarely found in front of a camera- so the team and I feel super honoured that she said yes to coming on and sharing her story. Please enjoy... JobsWorth is back and this week I’m speaking with Charli Davies, Director of Do It Like A Mother. Prepare yourself for a very real, very open, very raw conversation about all things motherhood and parenting. With Do It Like a Mother, Charli and her team are building a movement. A community where mums are free to share their experience without fear of judgement. A safe space to say out loud that amidst all the joy and magic of parenting, it’s also really bloody hard. We talk all about unrealistic expectations, the pursuit of perfection and the myth of motherhood as well as shining a light on the potential negative impact of prescriptive parenting advice. Charli also shares how her childhood dream of becoming a journalist led her to a successful career in TV and radio and how her priorities shifted after having kids. JobsWorth Express returns this week as I speak with Founder of Figure 8 Consulting, Chris Whitley. Based in Cornwall, Chris is living up to most of the Cornish stereotypes you can imagine. Yes he’s got a camper van and spends loads of time at the beach with his family but he’s also on a mission to help organisations develop the clarity they need to deliver change in the best way they can.In this episode we explore what motivated him to start his own business not long after having his second daughter, how he balances building a consultancy with being a hands on Dad and the importance of prioritising work life balance early on. Chris’s story is super relatable and a good reminder that you don’t need to know EVERYTHING to get started…you just need to start. JobsWorth - Peter Knock
On this week’s episode of JobsWorth I’m speaking to Leigh on Sea based Illustrator and Artist, Peter Knock. Over the course of his 50+ year career Peter has created work for the world’s most iconic publications-think GQ, Rolling Stone, Time, Esquire and many more. His origin story is one filled with hard graft, quiet perseverance, and learning to back his own ability- with a bit of right-place-right-time luck and a truckload of talent thrown in.As well as running through Peter’s impressive list of credits we also explore what led him into teaching and the impact he’s had on his students, including me. JobsWorth - James Lawrence
On JobsWorth this week, I’m sitting down with storyteller and adventurer James Lawrence (aka Man About Country).James is a man on a mission. Earlier this year, he set out on a 400km walk around Essex in an effort to gather, preserve, and celebrate the stories that make our great county special. He describes the project as his love letter to Essex – and I challenge you to listen to James talk about the magic, myths, and history abundant in our little corner of the world without feeling inspired to write your own.Expect all your standard JobsWorth fare during our chat (James went through perhaps one of the biggest career pivots we’ve discussed across sixty-plus episodes of the podcast), as well as a gripping (not a guarantee) game of Fact or Folklore.Be sure to check out the link to the remaining dates of James’ Essex Ways Story Walk Tour in the description before you go.Please enjoy… James Lawrence.#jobsworth #podcast #career #worklife #storiesthatinspirechangeTour Links - https://www.manaboutcountry.co.uk/essexwaystourWebsite - https://www.manaboutcountry.co.ukInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/man_about_country/The JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

JobsWorth - Luke Williams
On this week’s episode of JobsWorth I sit down with Luke Williams, Founder and Director of Essex Metalworx. Despite the name of his business, Luke does so much more than ‘just’ make stuff from metal. He’s honed his craft over years of trial and error, learnt new skills by watching hours of YouTube clips and built a business where he’s now in a position to start saying no to the projects he struggles to get excited about. We cover his journey from school to a job he loved in hospitality, how he found himself working in a steel yard in his early twenties and the events that led him to leaving long term employment and setting up on his own. What Luke does is hard to define. He doesn’t fit into your conventional box and from where I’m sitting it seems he doesn’t want to choose one of the options from the HUGE list of job titles society often forces us to pick from. He wants to make up his own. And that is what JobsWorth is all about. I simply describe him as someone that makes cool sh*t. Long may it continue. JobsWorth - Liam Lingwood
JobsWorth is back and this week I’m speaking to Liam Lingwood, Head Chef and Owner of Essex based restaurant Food Leigh on Sea. Liam couldn’t be any more different from so many of the chefs we see portrayed on our screens in shows like The Bear or films like Burnt with Bradley Cooper (both worth a watch). As well as being a genuinely lovely bloke, his leadership style may well have been shaped by his less than conventional route into the kitchen and the mentors he’s been fortunate enough to work with and learn from along the way. In this episode you’ll learn all about that. We also talk about the importance of showing willing when you’re first starting out in your career, the impact of finding the right boss and the right environment, Liam’s experience of burnout, as well as how he overcame it, and how he took over an existing business in a way that honoured its legacy while putting his own stamp on it at the same time. Oh, and ready yourself for a game of ‘Rate My Plate’ and the subsequent fallout towards the end of the episode. You won’t want to miss it. JobsWorth Express - Will Grashoff
On this week’s JobsWorth Express episode I sit down with Recruitment Agency Owner, Will Grashoff. Will, like almost everyone working in recruitment, fell into it. A little over a decade later, he’s still doing it and has built an incredibly successful brand along the way.In this episode we talk about the importance of embracing authenticity, resisting AI, the challenges of running a business, the power of not taking yourself too seriously and it was only right that we took the piss out of the recruitment industry a bit along the way too. In a sea of people all trying to follow a proven formula for success it's refreshing to meet someone who is willing to go against the status quo, stand out from the crowd and most importantly, have fun along the way. Please enjoy...Will Grashoff#jobsworth #podcast #career #worklife #storiesthatinspirechange The JobsWorth website is here www.jobs-worth.comWatch the show on YouTube; https://www.youtube.com/@jobsworthpodcastFollow the show on Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/jobsworthpodcast/?hl=enFollow me on LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhawker/Follow me on TikTok; https://www.tiktok.com/@globaltechcollectiveSubscribe to my newsletter 'The Job Journal from GTC'; https://subscribepage.io/TheJobJournalLearn more about my proper job; https://www.globaltechcollective.com/Contact the show on [email protected]

JobsWorth Express - Dave Officer
We’re back with another JobsWorth Express episode and this week I’m speaking with Illustrator, Graphic Designer and Founder of Doodle Juice Design, Dave Officer. I’ve known Dave for some time now after first meeting on LinkedIn land and it’s him you’ve got to thank for my big cartoony head screaming into the void as part of the new JobsWorth branding. We talk about how school very nearly became the reason he didn’t pursue his passion, what it takes to overcome the fear that stops so many of us taking the plunge and working for ourselves and the importance of pivoting (and knowing when it’s the right time to do it).Dave also shares some super helpful advice that will get literally ANYONE’s creative juices flowing. JobsWorth - Tobias Smith
On this week’s episode of JobsWorth I’m joined by Essex based Musician Tobias (Toby) Smith. What does it take to turn something most people view as a hobby into a fully fledged career?Well, in Toby’s case, it involved two particularly inspiring family members, a heady mix of talent and hard work and a focus on what matters…doing something you love. This was easily one of my favourite episodes to date. Toby’s outlook on life is aspirational and for someone who hasn’t yet turned 30, the ability he’s developed to not sweat the small stuff is something everyone can learn from. Whether you’re a musician (budding or otherwise), on the fence about turning your passion into a career or just simply want to hear from someone who views the world through a lens of positivity and optimism (I know right) then this episode has something for you. Stick around till the end for a little taste of what Toby can do with a guitar and some random song requests from the crew. You won’t want to miss it. JobsWorth - Abby Thomas
My guest this week is Essex based Social Media Manager, Strategist and Content Creator, Abby Thomas.“I spent the majority of my 20’s working in a corporate role feeling like I was watching myself live out someone else’s life.”It’s a powerful statement and one that I think will resonate with a lot of our listeners. Abby’s is a story of resilience, hard graft and ultimately a lesson in the liberation that comes from getting sh*t done on your own terms. During our conversation we talk about the pressure that so many of us feel in our late teens to get a “proper job” and how that can lead us to turn our back on the things we love doing. We talk about what it takes to leave the perceived security of the corporate world, overcoming redundancy, the reality of building a business from scratch and the very real impact of burnout. I also ask Abby a load of your questions on all things social media (get your note pad out and prepare to create better, more authentic content) and my mum comes up with a banger of a question to close things out. JobsWorth - Alexandra Allan
On JobsWorth this week I’m speaking with Essex based Nutritional Therapist, Alexandra Allan. Alex describes herself as having been lucky enough to have had two careers. The first was a 20 year run in publishing…a world she’d wanted to work in from a young age and one where she achieved a great level of success. The second began when Alex turned 40, inspired in part by a book she picked up in an airport that changed her life on a flight home from New York. During our conversation we explore the events that led Alex to change her relationship with work, why she turned her back on a job and an industry where she was at the top of her game, what it actually takes to move from one career to another and how she overcame imposter syndrome along the way. We discuss Alex’s experience of supporting her clients with perimenopause and menopause, the impact it can have on women beyond hot flushes and highlight the work that still needs to be done to ensure organisations are providing the support to their employees that is so desperately needed. I also ask Alex some listeners questions on nutrition, health and wellbeing and was blown away by just how knowledgeable she is. There is some seriously useful stuff in here. This is a super special episode. JobsWorth - Gemma and Will Jones
On this weeks episode of JobsWorth I speak with Gemma and Will Jones, the husband and wife team behind Essex based bakery business Wilma's.This conversation is, as its heart, a lesson in starting again. After the pair were forced to leave their previous careers behind it was time to go back to the drawing board. What followed was the creation of a brand that has become synonymous with all of your favourite sweet treats (think cupcakes, brownies, cookies...but not as you know them🍰)We explore what it takes to pick yourself back up again when one door closes, and the tools you need to build yourself a new one and step through it. From baking in their kitchen at home and selling their products from a bright pink trailer (Cakey McCakeface) to opening 3 shops, employing 25 staff and becoming a go to destination for people all over the UK, we cover it all. JobsWorth Express - Mark Green
In the first of our brand spanking new JobsWorth Express episodes I jump on a call with Mark Green, CEO and Founder of Change Rebellion. Mark has been working in the change and transformation space for almost two decades and in 2023 he decided to forgo the security (perceived security at least) of a permanent job to set up his very own business. We explore the events that led to him making that decision, the lessons he's learnt along the way, the reality of building something from scratch on your lonesome and the advice he'd share with anyone looking to do the same thing. Please enjoy...Mark Green.
