Scars and Medals: Palestinian Resilience and Resistance amidst Occupation (w/ Mohanad Alsayed)

In this episode, I speak to Mohanad Alsayed about his new memoir titled “Scars and Medals”  released by Iskra Books. This memoir is a granular look at the occupation of Palestine from the perspective of Mohanad and his family. He tells the story of his grandmother who lived before Israeli colonization in 1948 and was forced to flee and rebuild their lives; he tells his story of growing up as a child under military occupation in the West Bank, and the story of finding his long lost uncle who was a resistance fighter that fled Palestine when he was very young and was on the run from Mossad, never to be heard from afterward. This is not just a story of occupation and hardship, but also one of agency, resilience, and resistance.PLEASE DONATE to the Sameer Project's Food and Water Campaign: https://chuffed.org/project/help-us-deliver-vital-aid-to-gaza-families-in-need/ Buy/download Scars and Medals: https://www.iskrabooks.org/books/p/scars-and-medalsMohanad Alsayed's website: https://www.mohanadalsayed.com/Journal of International Solidarity LinksPatreon: https://patreon.com/internationalsolidaritypodcast/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/journalofintlsolidarity/ Substack: https://intlsolidarity.substack.com/ Youtube: https://youtube.com/@journalofintlsolidarity/

Resisting Western Ideological Warfare: The Politics of Anti-Imperialist Knowledge Production (w/ Jeannette Graulau & Charles Xu)

In this episode, we discuss how the terrain of knowledge and information – ranging from the news to social media to academia – is a highly unequal playing field dominated by the capitalists and imperialists, and how those of us on the anti-imperialist left – whether we’re grassroots organizers, scholars, or podcasters – can better understand this unequal terrain and contest it politically. Joining this discussion is Professor Jeannette Graulau from the Anti-Imperialist Scholars Collective and Charles Xu from Sovereign Media. Imperial Marxism and the Political Economy of Intellectual Production (w/ Gabriel Rockhill)

In this collaborative episode with Return to Bandung, Pranay Somayajula and I have a conversation with Gabriel Rockill loosely centered around his new book ‘Who Paid the Pipers of Western Marxism?’. We discuss how a distorted, effectively pro-empire form of Marxism, or radical politics more broadly, came to dominate western academia, how to understand academia as an intellectual industry almost just like any other industry, where the space exists for anti-imperialists to intervene in the otherwise bourgeois-dominated intellectual space, and where the ‘battle of ideas’ goes from here onward through the 21st century.Journal of International Solidarity LinksPatreon: https://patreon.com/internationalsolidaritypodcast/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/journalofintlsolidarity/ Substack: https://intlsolidarity.substack.com/ Youtube: https://youtube.com/@journalofintlsolidarity/

In this episode, I speak with Dr. Tejaswini Ganti, who is a Professor of Anthropology at New York University. We discuss the the emergence of the Hindi film industry in India during the era of Indian independence from British rule, how Hindi films during this era became popular across the world from the Soviet Union to North Africa, how the industry later transformed into Bollywood in the 1990s, and how the class character of films and film-going audiences changed during this period. We also look at some of the more recent developments in Indian film, including the rise of South Indian film industries and the saffronization of Bollywood.Dr. Ganti's book "Producing Bollywood: Inside the Contemporary Hindi Film Industry": https://www.dukeupress.edu/producing-bollywoodJournal of International Solidarity LinksPatreon: https://patreon.com/internationalsolidaritypodcast/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/journalofintlsolidarity/ Substack: https://intlsolidarity.substack.com/

Unequal Exchange: How the Underdevelopment of the South Overdeveloped the North (w/ Torkil Lauesen)

In this episode, we discuss Torkil Lauesen’s latest book "Unequal Exchange: Past, Present, Future", published by Iskra Books. We take a deep dive into the theory of unequal exchange and how it explains the disparities between the global North and the global South. We look at the life of Arghiri Emmanuel, whose understanding and theorizing of unequal exchange Torkil is drawing on throughout the book. We also discuss the concept of ecological unequal exchange – that the ecological crisis is felt differently across the global North and South. Finally, we explore how unequal exchange is being resisted by China, how it can be resisted in the rest of the global South, but also in the global North.Check out the book here (free PDF available): https://www.iskrabooks.org/ue-past-present-future/ Journal of International Solidarity LinksPatreon: https://patreon.com/internationalsolidaritypodcast/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/journalofintlsolidarity/ Substack: https://intlsolidarity.substack.com/ Youtube: https://youtube.com/@JournalofIntlSolidarity/

Anti-Imperialism in a Multipolar World: Lessons from V.I. Lenin and M.N. Roy (Pranay Somayajula & Ashwin Shantha)

In this episode, Pranay and I look back at the debate that took place at the Communist International in 1920 between Lenin and Indian Communist M.N. Roy on the national and colonial question. At its heart, the debate sought to figure out what form the struggle for national liberation could take in the colonies as part of a world revolution, and especially, what role the indigenous bourgeoisie would play in this national liberation struggle. In the first half of the episode, we go through Lenin’s and M.N. Roy’s positions on the national question, we look at where there are overlaps, and where there are differences. In the second half of the episode, we fast forward just over a century and explore the resonances of this debate in our current moment, specifically as they relate to China and Palestine.Pranay Somayajula is an Indian-American writer, researcher, and political educator whose work focuses on the structures of global imperialism, as well as questions of decolonization, internationalism, and anti-imperialist resistance—both historically and in the present day. Mark Carney's First 100ish Days as Prime Minister: A Paradigm Shift? (w/ Blueprints of Disruption)

In this episode, Jessa McLean of Blueprints of Disruption and I discuss recent developments in Canadian politics since the election of Mark Carney's Liberal government. We start by discussing Carney's two signature bills so far: the colonial and pro-fossil fuel Bill C-5 and the anti-migrant and pro-surveillance Bill C-2. We then discuss Canada's new NATO commitment of spending 5% of GDP per year on military spending and the public spending cuts that will accompany it. Finally, we discuss recent developments related to Palestine, including the the Hague Group's Emergency Conference on Palestine and Canada's continued support of the israeli regime. This episode was jointly developed, produced, and cross-posted between the International Solidarity Pod and Blueprints of Disruption. Origins of Canadian Settler Colonialism and Whiteness (w/ Dr. Phil Henderson)

In this first episode of the International Solidarity Pod, Dr. Phil Henderson discusses the how the confederation of Canada in 1867 marked a new trajectory for the dispossession of Indigenous peoples on the continent, and that the creation of 'whiteness' was an important development at this time.A central takeaway from this conversation is that 'Canada', like any colonial or class project, contains many contradictory elements that continue to require active work to hold together. This conversation is based on a paper written by Dr. Henderson titled "Federalism and Settler Imperialism: Racial Regimes, Whiteness, and Conquest in Canadian Constitutionalism", which can be found here: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journa...You can find Dr. Henderson's work here: https://utoronto.academia.edu/PhilHen...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/journalofin...Substack: https://intlsolidarity.substack.com/Youtube: https://youtube.com/@JournalofIntlSolidaritySpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6pbGw76...Apple podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast...
