Healthy Mouth, Healthy Heart (with Dr. Feinberg)

In this episode, Reah interviews Dr. Edward Feinberg, a dentist with 70 years of documented experience in full mouth reconstruction and crown and bridge dentistry, who learned from his father, a pioneer in the field. Dr. Feinberg emphasizes the importance of understanding the correlation between oral health and heart health, which he discovered later in life. He discusses his mission to educate others about dental choices and the techniques he learned from his father, which are not commonly taught in dental schools today. Edward and Reah discusses the importance of dental care and the potential risks associated with cosmetic appearances over functionality. The pair highlight the stigma surrounding oral health issues and the need for better access to dental care, especially for those without insurance and emphasized that good oral hygiene does not guarantee immunity to dental problems and that such issues can arise due to various factors beyond personal care. Dr. Feinberg explains the importance of dental care, focusing on how tartar and plaque build-up can lead to gum inflammation and bone loss, which is a common cause of tooth loss. He emphasizes the role of regular X-rays in monitoring bone health and the need for preventive measures like regular cleanings. Dr. Feinberg also emphasizes how poor tooth architecture can lead to issues like food impaction and abnormal tooth wear, which crown and bridge procedures can help address and expresses satisfaction from seeing long-term success of his dental work, even in patients with underlying health conditions. Reah inquires about the impact of Edward's work, particularly that of him and his father, on the dental industry, to which Edward responds by highlighting the importance of research and preventive practices in improving dental health outcomes. Dr. Feinberg and Reah discuss the current state of dental technology and practices, particularly the overuse of implants and the decline in traditional crown and bridge skills among younger practitioners. Dr. Feinberg emphasizes the importance of using proven techniques, such as the mason jar cover model for crown preparation, which he attributed to his father and grandfather's methods from the early 20th century, noting that this approach results in better seal and longevity of restorations, contrasting with the current butt joint restorations that he believes are inadequate. He further discusses his approach to dentistry, emphasizing the importance of engineering principles and the need to replace dentistry when necessary, due to changes over time. He further explains his aim to create an ideal architecture for teeth, gums, and bone by bringing forces close to the supporting structures, which is not commonly achieved by other dentists. Dr. Edward Feinberg's goal is to promote health by ending periodontal bone loss and making it easier for patients to maintain clean dentistry. Introducing Dr. Kevin Smith

Dr. Kevin Smith, a board-certified chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner from Pittsburgh, joins us to discuss his dual approach to patient care, combining traditional chiropractic techniques for musculoskeletal issues with functional medicine for metabolic and systemic problems. He explains that while many people associate chiropractors with back pain, their primary focus is on ensuring the nervous system's health by relieving pressure on spinal nerves. His postdoctoral training in functional medicine allows him to address a wide range of health issues, including gut problems, thyroid disorders, and diabetes, beyond the traditional scope of chiropractic care. Dr. Kevin discussed his 25-year career in natural health and his focus on educating people about alternative treatments beyond drug therapy, noting that the United States and New Zealand are the only countries where TV drug ads are allowed. He additionally explains the difference between allopathic healthcare, which focuses on treating symptoms with chemicals, and functional medicine, which seeks to understand and address root causes of health issues. Dr. Kevin emphasizes that while medication has its place, people are often over-medicated and should explore various healing methods, including mental health, gut health, and natural treatments. For any health issue, it's best to start with the least invasive, non-toxic treatments first, such as diet changes or physical therapy, before considering more invasive options like surgery. Dr. Kevin and Reah discussed the dangers of over-reliance on medication and the importance of exploring non-invasive measures for health issues while emphasizing that many over-the-counter drugs can be harmful and highlighted the need to consider factors like diet, lifestyle, and environmental triggers. Reah shares her experience of raising teenagers to approach health issues holistically rather than immediately resorting to medication. They also touched on the significance of considering dietary and environmental factors in health management. Dr. Kevin further shares his experience about how his mother was advised to use margarine instead of butter, despite his warnings about its health risks. He explains that margarine is linked to various cancers and is nearly plastic in composition, while butter is healthier and how the food industry has historically added unhealthy ingredients to products, and expresses his belief that both the food and pharmaceutical industries intentionally harm consumers. While the food industry has changed over the years, there seems to be an increase in food allergies and sensitivities not due to exaggeration but rather due to intentional modifications in food production for economic reasons. Dr. Kevin emphasizes avoiding processed foods with trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and unnecessary additives, advising Reah to focus on whole, unprocessed foods. Evolutionary Men with Jason Lange

In today's episode, we meet Jason Lang; a men's embodiment coach who focuses on supporting men in relationships, career, and health, emphasizing the importance of connection and challenging societal expectations for men to be tough and self-reliant. Jason and Reah discuss societal expectations around men's emotional expression, noting that men are often expected to suppress their feelings while women are expected to show a range of emotions.  Jason and Reah highlight the need to address these expectations for men as parents, particularly in teaching emotional intelligence to children, and noted a positive shift in societal conversations about men expressing emotions. They additionally touch on the importance of breaking generational cycles and fostering open discussions about mental health and emotional expression for men. Jason and Reah discuss the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, particularly for men, highlighting increased social isolation and challenges in connecting with others and explore how traditional masculinity norms, such as the expectation of invulnerability and suppression of emotions, contribute to lifelong struggles for many boys and men. Jason emphasizes importance of teaching emotional expression and attunement from a young age, contrasting the different parenting approaches often given to boys and girls while focusing on the educational system's role in perpetuating these issues, noting research on the growing gap in educational outcomes between boys and girls, with suggestions like holding boys back a year to address the disparities. Jason discusses how boys mature emotionally slower and benefit from early physical activity and play, which helps with socialization and self-regulation. He emphasizes the importance of teaching children, especially boys, to recognize and articulate their emotions, as a lack of emotional awareness can lead to negative coping mechanisms like substance abuse or withdrawal. Reah shares her experience with her adopted son, who at 10 years old, was able to acknowledge and express his anger, which led to improved behavior and emotional regulation. Both agreed that understanding and addressing emotions early can lead to better outcomes for children. Jason and Reah further discuss the societal changes in how emotions are perceived in men, particularly the concept of the "man box" which restricts traditional male emotions to only anger as well as how boys and men are taught to suppress emotions like grief, fear, and shame, and how this can lead to unhealthy expressions of anger. Jason shares an example from his personal experience of creating a safe space for his son to express anger, which revealed underlying emotions of grief and they conclude by discussing the importance of teaching children healthy ways to express anger and other emotions. Jason emphasizes the importance of men's connection and emotional expression, highlighting how men's groups can provide support and accelerate personal growth. He explains the benefits of sharing vulnerabilities and receiving feedback in a safe environment, emphasizing how this can lead to leadership and purpose; sharing insights from his podcast, "Evolutionary Men," which focuses on helping men achieve balance between power and sensitivity. Parental Coaching with Tina (Part 1)

In today's episode, Tina and Reah discuss their shared passion for parenting and family relationships, with Tina sharing her journey from a challenging childhood to becoming a parent coach who has trained over 850 coaches worldwide. They explore the concept of children's challenging behavior as a physiological need to be seen, rather than a choice, and discussed Reah's experience with her adopted 10-year-old son, who struggles with stealing and attention-seeking behaviors. Tina offered insights on how to approach Reah's son's behavior through understanding his need to be seen and validated, rather than viewing it as moral or intentional. Tina shares her personal experience of connecting with her deceased father through a medium, which confirmed his abusive behavior towards her mother. She explains how dissociation can protect children from facing the reality of their parents' inability to care for them due to trauma. Tina recommends using "ICU letters" as a powerful tool for healing! When composing these letters, it is important to include compassion for the child(ren)'s birth/absent parent(s) and healing for the child(ren) in the letter. They discuss the importance of providing positive attention to help the child(ren)'s behavior improve and emphasized the power of written communication in building intimacy and understanding between parent and child. Nidia on Reiki

In today's episode Reah and Nidia discuss experiences with health and alternative therapies. Nidia shares her journey into Reiki and Advanced Integrated Therapy (AIT), which began after her grandmother's passing and her exploration of spirituality despite her religious background. As Reah has expressed interest in these therapies, particularly AIT, she shares her own experiences with ADHD and the challenges of managing it without medication. Nidia's journey into Reiki began by becoming trained by an Italian psychic living in Mexico and discovering its therapeutic applications through research articles. She describes Reiki as a practice involving the transfer of universal life force energy through the hands, similar to prayer healing, and mentioned her current training under Usui Reiki, with plans to achieve Level 3 certification next year. Nidia explains the origins of Reiki, tracing its lineage back to Dr. Usui, and described the seven main chakras in the human body and outlines the differences between Reiki levels, including the ability to treat oneself, family, friends, and pets, as well as the use of four symbols representing emotional healing, distant healing, and concentrated energy. Nidia expressed gratitude for completing Reiki training before AIT, as it helped her understand how AIT works. Nidia and Reah discuss the correlation between AIT and Reiki, focusing on energy psychology and holistic approaches in mental health education while noting that formal education often overlooks holistic and natural medicine practices, despite their evidence-based foundations. Nidia and Reah discuss the benefits of DBT and the physical aspects of trauma healing, including the concept that trauma energy is stored in the body and can be released through physical movement as well. They explore how trauma can be linked to weight gain and the release of cortisol when weight is lost, referencing "The Body Keeps the Score." while combined with Reiki to address energy centers and uses muscle testing to determine what is beneficial for the body. Nidia explains the principles of muscle testing as a diagnostic tool in alternative medicine, demonstrating two methods: sliding the index finger over the thumb and interlacing fingers and the pair discusses how natural practices are often viewed with skepticism compared to traditional medicine. Nidia also describes her experience in a tamascal, a traditional sweat lodge-like structure, which led her to explore generational trauma through AIT sessions. She explains how trauma experienced by her grandmother during pregnancy with her mother was passed down chemically, and how carrying both a baby and future generations' ovaries during pregnancy can impact future generations. Nidia and Reah additionally discuss the importance of decluttering and its positive impact on mental and physical well-being. They agree that increased awareness and education about decluttering, facilitated by podcasters like Reah, are contributing to its growing popularity. Nidia emphasizes the power of knowledge in empowering individuals to make positive changes in their lives, while Reah highlightes the importance of self-understanding as a foundation for navigating life's challenges. They go on to further discuss the importance of self-awareness and questioning to break cycles of poverty and make positive changes. "Bipolar Awakenings" with Sean Blackwell

In this episode Sean and Reah discuss Sean's journey with mental health experiences, clarifying that they view their experiences as spiritual rather than diagnostic. Sean shares his transformative experience that led him to explore spirituality and mental health. He describes a life-changing meditation during a Landmark Forum seminar that uncovered deep-seated fears related to a previous scuba diving accident. This experience led to a spiritual crisis, culminating in a hospitalization after he became unmanageable in a hotel ballroom. Despite the challenging start, Sean's career flourished afterward, and he later discovered the concept of spiritual emergency through Dr. Stan Groff's work. Sean shares his experience with a spiritual emergency, which he initially mistook for a mental disorder but later realized was a beneficial spiritual experience. He describes how this experience transformed his understanding of the spiritual dimension of mental health. Sean explains how he was raised Catholic but became agnostic during his university studies, exploring the sociology and psychology of religion. However, a move to Vancouver and subsequent experiences reignited his belief in God, leading to his spiritual emergency. Sean and Reah discuss their experiences with spirituality and atheism, with Sean explaining that true atheism involves questioning religious beliefs and leading to a more experiential form of spirituality that doesn't depend on religion. Reah shares her journey from strict Christianity to a more moderate spiritual position, influenced by her husband's evolution from atheism to a belief system that includes personal experiences of the divine. They also touch on the concept of synchronicity and its role in spiritual experiences, with Sean noting that while waiting for a bus might be considered a minor synchronicity, more significant events carry more weight. Sean shares his personal journey and research on understanding acute psychosis and bipolar disorder, highlighting the work of pioneering psychologists who viewed such experiences as intended reorganization of the psyche for healing. He also explains the effectiveness of the Ceterian method, which emphasizes empathy and support over medication, and his experience supporting family members through psychosis without medication, emphasizing the importance of holistic health approaches, criticizing the gaslighting nature of some psychiatric practices and advocating for somatic therapy alongside medication and therapy.  Learn more about Sean, and obtain a free PDF of his books, and training programs on his website: https://www.bipolarAwakenings.com. Introducing Linda Lysakowski

In today's episode, we introduce Linda Lysakowski. Linda and Reah discuss Linda's extensive writing career, highlighting her over 40 published books and ongoing projects. Linda shares her journey into authorship, starting with writing blogs and non-profit case statements, eventually leading to her first published book in 1994. She describes her collaborations with various publishers and her transition into writing spiritual books, including a recent second edition of a book on the face of Jesus. Linda and Reah both share their journey as authors, discussing their latest works and the rewarding nature of helping others with their writing. Both women emphasized the value of writing as a personal process and the sense of accomplishment it brings, regardless of the book's commercial success. Linda emphasizes the hardest part of writing a book is getting it published and marketed, not the writing itself. She discusses handling negative feedback, recalling an incident where a mistake in a self-published book led to a second edition. Linda highlights the importance of positive feedback and leaving a legacy through her writing, particularly in her fundraising books, which have been influential for many readers. In Linda's writing experience, she expresses a preference for nonfiction and spiritual genres, including a book about Jesus from different perspectives. She mentions a travel book she wrote about Las Vegas and its surroundings. Linda suggests authors should work according to their natural rhythms rather than imposing strict writing schedules, and shares her approach of alternating between different books when inspiration wanes. Linda and Reah briefly discuss their experiences with different churches and the importance of authentic spiritual practice. Linda shares her work on combining spirituality with fundraising, including her book "The Pastor's Guide to Stewardship and Philanthropy." Linda advises aspiring authors to seek guidance from experienced writers and prepare for the challenges of publishing and marketing.
