K-OS (P-Funk Mix-Master)

What started off as a hardcore Funk/Thrash/Reggae band in 1981-82 Oakland, Ca. simply phased out due to growing pains (all members were in the 10th grade). Anthony Bryant a.k.a. Dave Id K-OS pushed on and tookhis Funk, Rock, Reggae and Hardcore influences to the turntables. After getting hired at a local record store in 1984, K-OS unleashed his style of mixes and scratches with hip-hop beats cut over his musical influences, whichincluded: Parliament/Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, Sly & the Family Stone, Black Flag, Flipper, and Killing Joke. The year was 1985, Hip-Hop was in it's infant stage and samplers weren't even popular, George Clinton discovers K-OS mixing P-Funk records at his job. In the Spring of 1986, K-OS was featured on Clinton's"R&B Skeletons In The Closet" LP which also featured Vanessa L. Williams' vocal performance on "Hey, Good Lookin'". Always the pioneer, Clinton foreseen what was to become the next big thing in music, Scratchin' and Samplin'. As part of the Mix-Maste

    Panther Power (T Y H O O M I I N U A)

On the morning of August 22, 1989. A friend called and asked if I had heard the news about Dr. Huey P. Newton. I turned on the news and started recording on my VCR. After gathering news footage that morning, I went straight for the Roland S-10. Here is the result of laying the bottom track straight to tape then overdubbing the sampled news footage. R.I.P. Dr. Huey P. Newton February 17, 1942 – August 22, 1989

We Have Taught (To Get Looped Up?)

I found these unedited, raw demo tracks I was working on for a project about sampling and musicians who have been sampled. I put these little pieces together as ideas for intros, segueways or segments. By the way, that project was put on hold, INDEFINITELY!

    Tromsampulation

From the Vaults of K-OS, 1988. I had LunchMeataphobia while Trombipulating a Warning. Samples from Trombipulation by Parliament, Lunchmeataphobia by Funkadelic, Warning by Slave, You Can Make It If You Try by Sly and The Family Stone, Agony Of DeFeet by Parliament, I think there's some Grace Jones in there somewhere. This is also a test. I uploaded direct from the computer into the upload/rec line to soundcloud.

  21. 9

    The Dank Is On Me

This is one of my rejected demo tracks for Digital Underground's 1993 album, "The Body Hat Syndrome". Hope I don't get in trouble for uploading. Samples are from, "You Can Make It If You Try" by Sly & The Family Stone, "Strangers in the Night" by The Young - Holt Trio and "In A Stranger's Arms" by Attitudes.

  22. 8

    Cow Statues Around The Mountain

Taking you back to 1988. Another excursion through The Vaults of K-OS. This is what it sounds like when you take "Cow Punk" by Scott Goddard, "Weathered Statues" by TSOL and "Comin' Round The Mountain" by Funkadelic. Throw in some feedback from "Synchronicity ll" by The Police. With Eddie Hazel's guitar solo from Comin' Round The Mountain included. Sampled and Scratch-Mixed live, direct to two track.

    Eulogy At The Witch's Castle

Enter, if you will, the Lo-Fi Underground Labyrinth of The Original K-OS. Another excursion through the Vaults of K-OS. The Nightmare Of Readjustment is upon you. The sounds you hear are, "Come in Out Of The Rain" drum loop, "Eulogy And Light" Scratch/Mix, and Dave Id K-OS on guitar. All due respect to George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic. I do not claim copyright on any samples or loops just credit for rearrangement and composing of pre-existing material, plus my original guitar licks with the exception of March To The Witch's Castle interpolation. Recorded, mixed and performed by Dave Id K-OS (A. Bryant) 1993.

  25. 5

    It Must Be Scratched

And yet another excursion into the depths of the K-OS Vaults. Clearly made with the George Clinton Sample Series cuts. I threw in some cuts from, well, you'll figure them out if you are into listening to what is going on, that is.

  26. 4

    It's The P-Funk Nation

An interview of George Clinton by Rickey Vincent back in 1989. Rickey had asked GC if he remembered doing some work with a DJ back in 1985. I chopped and sampled parts of it to this obscure palette of sounds including samples from, well, see if you can figure them out. Another lo-fi Funkstravaganza from General K-OS, Mix-Master, Loopadelic Division of Uncle Jam's Funk Army.

  27. 3

That'll Be The First Time - James Holly and Buddy Brown

54 years ago today a 22 year old Buddy Holly died in a plane crash along with 17 yr. old Ritchie Valens and 29 yr. old J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. It is known as "The Day The Music Died". I woke up this morning thinking, "What would it have sounded like if Buddy Holly and The Crickets were to jam with James Brown & The JB's"? I came up with this. Done live with no SERATO or any of that stuff, just 1 turntable and 1 CDJ. Made this at 2:45 pm 02/03/13. Hope you like it.

  28. 2

They Can Sample All They Wanna Sample (Bite Off Some Mo' Man)

Another 4-Track demo I recorded back in 1989. Everybody was sampling, trying to get a hit. There was a lot of biting going on too. So I sent this message out there. I put this track down live to 4-Track. No sync tones or sync tracks or midi on this one. Two turntables and a sampler, live to tape.

  29. 1

    ReMix-Master Suite (Dave K-OS Remix 1989)

This is a demo version of Mix-Master Suite. What was originally done as a remix to Funkadelic's One Nation Under A Groove by Dave K-OS, morphed into several versions. George's label at the time couldn't or wouldn't give clearance to any of the P-Funk songs that were originally scratch/mixed throughout One Nation so all of those were cut out of the mix. George had sent me a rather clean cassette copy of what he and Debra Barsha were able to sample then re-arrange into a bottom track that was in the same tempo of One Nation. The cuts that survived were the Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Real Roxanne scratches I had done in the fall of 1985. I did a version at a local studio with that cassette copy cleaned up a bit and put some more P-Funk cuts in it, sent the tape off to him but the package came back opened with no tape inside. The package never made it out of the post office. By Spring of 1986 the song was released on R&B Skeleton's In The Closet . I had forgotten all of the previous scratch/mixes I did so I sat down and produced a 4-Track demo version in 1989 and called it Re-Mix Master Suite. This is almost close to what was originally done.
