E199 Lauren C. Returns
Lauren from episode 163 celebrates a year off kratom. In her first year of sobriety, the fog of kratom-induced complacency lifted around the five-to-six-month mark, spurring her to launch an Etsy shop, earn a corporate promotion, open her own creative marketing consulting business, pursue psychiatric care for underlying OCD and anxiety, and rebuild more authentic friendships. E198 Kayla D.
Kayla, a 29-year-old stay-at-home mom diagnosed on the autism spectrum, shares her nearly eight-year struggle with kratom addiction, which began when trusted family members introduced her to the substance as a safe, legal alternative to opioids. Her use escalated from powder capsules to concentrated liquid extracts, costing her around $200 a week, draining her finances, and leaving her emotionally numb and unable to be present for her family. Two frightening episodes of withdrawal seizures during sleep, confirmed by a neurologist as kratom-related, ultimately gave her the push she needed to quit for good on September 19, 2025. E196 Alex M.
Lily talks with Alex M. from east Texas. Initially using Kratom in 2022 to boost afternoon productivity while juggling church ministry and a web design side hustle as a new father, Alex quickly escalated from one daily dose of powder to taking high-dose mitragynine extract tablets four times a day over three years. He hid the extent of his use from his wife. His turning point came about a month before a planned Disney World trip, when he realized he couldn't enjoy the "happiest place on earth" without the drug in his system, prompting him to confess to his wife and quit cold turkey. Now approaching a year sober, Alex reflects on how Kratom had numbed his emotions, disconnected him from his family, and caused numerous physical side effects he'd mistaken for aging, each of which resolved after quitting. Alex says reach out if he can be of any help: [email protected] TO TELL YOUR STORY ON THE PODCAST? https://forms.gle/VWrjhLSTPHqJyVhw7 QUITTING KRATOM SUPPORT MEETINGS https://www.kratommeetings.com CONNECT WITH US https://www.instagram.com/kratomsobriety https://twitter.com/kratomsobriety https://www.tiktok.com/@krat0ms0briety https://www.youtube.com/@KratomSobriety https://www.facebook.com/kratomsobriety https://bsky.app/profile/kratomsobriety.bsky.social https://www.threads.net/@kratomsobriety CONTACT THE SHOW Voice: 313-437-7720 Email: [email protected] https://kratomsobriety.com PLEASE LEAVE A REVIEW https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/kratom-addiction/id1685569424 https://www.audible.com/podcast/Kratom-Addiction/B0C3YHDLV5 https://open.spotify.com/show/4GkQiYu6S8IBn8qswyVm00

E195 Tyler
Lauren interviews Tyler about his trip to Mexico to use Ibogaine to quit kratom. After many prior attempts to stop in the years before, this treatment helped to reset his brain enough to get on the right track and finally achieve abstinence for just over six months at the date of interview. NOTE: Ibogaine comes with some risks, and it is important to research these, and to screen the quality and check the references of any provider to ensure safety. E194 J.P.
J.P. works in the mental health field but struggled with an escalating kratom habit that eventually led to him having to make two out of state trips a week to resupply. Drawing from his experience in alcohol recovery for six years, this week's guest (a 40-something divorced dad of two) relied on a range of tools and resources to quit kratom a half a year ago. E193 Bob
This week's guest Bob from Philly talks with Charlie about his disordered use of kratom extracts escalating to 7-OH over a period of three years. He said it was the only substance he had to go "get more" when it ran out. Bob quit cold turkey with the help of faith and music, and is trying to retrain his brain to do activities he used to mostly enjoy by loading up on kratom. 184 Jude
Jude shares her journey from using kratom as an opiate withdrawal aid in 2019 to escalating to 4-5 expensive extract shots daily, culminating in a terrifying over consumption incident at Toronto airport where she could barely walk to her gate. After a relapse following her first quit attempt, she achieved lasting sobriety in May 2025 through a managed taper with Reaction Recovery, discovering that her severe memory problems—which she feared were early-onset dementia—were entirely caused by kratom and have since resolved. Now 8 months sober, she emphasizes that minimizing your story by thinking you're "not sick enough" is a defense mechanism that keeps you trapped. E183 Doreen
Lily interviews Doreen, a long-term listener from the beginning of the podcast. Doreen is coming on three years off kratom and shares her journey to being kratom free. Hers was a path not as harrowing as many, but still a difficult one, nonetheless. Before kratom, she had minimal addiction history; only seasonal cigarette smoking in high school that she could easily stop. In January 2022, Doreen underwent a lumbar puncture and desperate for pain relief after medical options failed, someone gave her husband kratom to help. Her use escalated from a teaspoon to tablespoons, multiple times daily. She took it everywhere except work, constantly thinking about her next dose. A spiritual disconnection became her wake-up call. She tried to quit multiple times, experiencing severe withdrawal: inability to sleep, restless leg syndrome, complete loss of joy, depression, and intense crying. She described it as the worst experience of her life, with no relief day or night. Doreen finally quit in February 2023, with her husband staying by her side through the worst of it. Tragically, the person who originally gave kratom to her husband later died from kratom use, a loss that motivated Doreen to share her story publicly. She now actively warns others about kratom's dangers, having already prevented at least one coworker from trying it. Her message: kratom may seem harmless and natural, but it's addictive and can destroy lives while keeping its grip hidden from those closest to you. In the open, Lily and Jacob discuss the pitfall of only using the podcast as your sole source of support (don't do it!). He and Lily explore: * The isolating nature of kratom addiction; * The brutal withdrawal process he endured cold turkey; * A deceptive progression from casual use to physical dependence to disordered consumption with an inability to quit despite a strong desire. Recently, we've had a trend of welcoming back old guests mostly to celebrate anniversary milestones but in Elliot's case, he is returning to warn about the risk of relapse. E179 Middle Ground Kratom Regulation
Kratom was banned in Connecticut and Louisiana this year, as well as in scores of cities. Ohio and California, two big states, are taking significant actions to crack down on kratom in 2025. What are the alternatives? This episode explores a middle-ground approach to kratom regulation that rejects both total bans and weak, industry-written rules. We introduce six common-sense protections, including point-of-sale education, clear medical warnings, behind-the-counter sales, age verification for online purchases, naloxone availability, and strict limits on high-potency extracts. The goal is to make kratom use safer by offering pre-purchase digital counselling, reducing impulsive purchases, protecting youth, and limiting the most addictive and dangerous products while preserving adult access to lower-risk leaf forms. E177 Thomas
Episode focused on quitting kratom with a lockbox as a tool. In the interview this week, Gen-Xer Thomas (long-time primarily a powder user with many attempted quits) describes the challenge as: "Addiction lies to you in your own voice". Lockbox links (like always we don't get any commissions if you buy one): https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/11/style/lockable-box-container.html https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home-products/g35902030/top-time-locking-containers https://www.thekitchensafe.com/ A rough estimate of Thomas' end of day dose before he quit: Three heaping tablespoons of kratom powder ≈ 18–24 grams. Here is how that breaks down: A) 1 level tablespoon of kratom powder is usually about 5–7 grams B) A heaping tablespoon is typically 6–8 grams C) 3 heaping tablespoons → 6–8 g × 3 = 18–24 g Kratom powder density varies by grind, moisture, and how loosely it is scooped. "Heaping” is very subjective. Some heaps are modest, others are piled high. Volume measures are unreliable for kratom. A digital scale is the only accurate way to know dose. 18–24 grams is considered a very high dose for most people and is well into a range associated with dependence, tolerance escalation, and withdrawal risk. 175 Melanie Returns to Celebrate a Year Off 7-OH
Melanie (episode 110 from January 2025) returns to celebrate a year off 7-OH (quit date October 27, 2024). She is one of our first guests to discuss getting addicted specifically to 7-hydroxymitragynine products. Melanie also did not have any previous history of disordered substance use prior to this addiction. In follow-up questions after the interview, she texted Charlie the following responses - Melanie: Got up to spending $75 to $100 per day on 7-OH right before quitting. Took three and half days off of work during her detox. Never had withdrawals from mitragynine extract because she never took those daily. Getting laid-off from work six months after quitting was not related to her 7-OH addiction, though she did temporarily drink a little more to cope the first month she was unemployed. Several Statement Clarifications & Sources from Episode A. Charlie refers to 7-OH being “13 times more potent than morphine” The often-cited idea that 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is “~13 times more potent than morphine” comes from receptor-level and animal data, not direct human dose equivalence. It refers to higher potency at the mu-opioid receptor and stronger analgesic effects in preclinical models. Source: Obeng S. et al. 7-Hydroxymitragynine Is an Active Metabolite of Mitragynine and a Key Mediator of Its Analgesic Effects. ACS Central Science, 2019. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acscentsci.9b00141 B. Melanie and Charlie talk about 7-OH’s “half-life of 3 hours” Human pharmacokinetic data show that 7-OH has a relatively short half-life (on the order of a few hours, depending on dosing and conditions), so “around three hours” is a reasonable simplification for listeners. Source: Obeng S. et al. Human Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine Pharmacokinetics after Oral Dosing of a Mitragynine-Rich Kratom Extract. Molecules, 2024; 29(5):984. https://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/29/5/984 C. Melanie says “it’s basically like heroin / legal heroin” This reflects Melanie’s personal subjective experience with high-potency 7-OH extract products. While 7-OH acts on opioid receptors and can cause dependence and withdrawal, kratom alkaloids differ from heroin in chemical structure, potency, and overdose profile. Source: Gorelick DA. Kratom: Substance of Abuse or Therapeutic Plant? Psychiatric Clinics of North America, 2022; 45(3):415–430. https://www.psych.theclinics.com/article/S0193-953X(22)00027-2/fulltext D. Charlie and Melanie discuss “synthetic kratom” Kratom leaves naturally contain mitragynine, and after drying and oxidation, trace amounts of 7-OH. Many 7-OH products contain synthetic or semi-synthetic analogs not found in the plant. These products can be far stronger than traditional kratom powder and carry different risks. Source: Prevete E. et al. A Preliminary Inventory of Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) Products and Vendors on the Darknet and Cryptomarkets. Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 2024; 56(4):485–495. https://doi.org/10.1080/02791072.2023.2242361 E. Charlie compares 7-OH as “the cocaine of coca” This analogy is meant to illustrate the difference between a traditional plant product and its purified, concentrated alkaloid such as 7-OH. Coca leaves contain low levels of cocaine alkaloids and have historically been used in relatively mild ways, while cocaine is a chemically isolated, highly potent derivative. By analogy, ultra-potent 7-OH kratom extracts/synthetics are to kratom leaf what cocaine is to coca leaf: a conceptual comparison, not a direct pharmacological equivalence. Source: Naranjo PL. E161 Dr. Casey Grover on Trauma and Addiction
Guest host Jazz (episode #41) talks with returning expert Dr. Casey Grover, an addiction medicine physician with both clinical expertise and lived experience of PTSD. Together, they explore the frequent intersection of trauma and addiction, breaking down how adverse childhood experiences, big “T” and little “t” traumas, and even intergenerational stress shape vulnerability to substance use. Dr. Grover discusses diagnostic criteria for PTSD, explains treatment approaches ranging from medications like prazosin and SSRIs to EMDR therapy and stellate ganglion blocks, and weighs in on newer options such as psychedelic-assisted therapy. The conversation also highlights the stigma around mental health in the medical community, the importance of trauma-informed care, and the healing potential of honesty and vulnerability. E160 John S.
Lily & Charlie discuss - Is the last thing you quit the hardest? John, an engineer and outdoor enthusiast, recounts his decade-long struggle with kratom addiction that began as an alternative to pain pills, leading to escalating use (from 120 grams per day in the early 2010s to 7oh isolates in 2025), financial ruin, and the loss of a significant relationship. After multiple failed attempts to quit (including a relapse after 2 years kratom free), he ultimately finds success through a combination of medication, family support and cold plunges, and now shares his story to help others facing similar challenges. In the open, Charlie and Nolan discuss the fed's proposed 7OH ban. Jacob talks to interview guest Alyse about her journey from discovering kratom during bodybuilding training to struggling with addiction, multiple relapses, and ultimately seeking recovery through detox, medically assisted treatment, and support systems. While at time of this broadcast, she is kratom free for a couple months now, she is on a wait list to go to 30-day residential rehab to invest in long term abstinence from the green kava-kratom drinks, an addiction that caused her to lose a job and major strains on important relationships. E158 Jonny L.
Jacob and Nolan open on how addiction is a lifetime journey thought not a permanent ongoing struggle. In the interview, Jonny became addicted to 7-OH in both liquid and tablet versions, which led to rapid tolerance and severe dependence. He ultimately quit after a car accident by entering a treatment facility, where he used Suboxone to help with withdrawal and later the Sublocade injection as part of his treatment plan, combined with structured recovery housing, community support, and daily routines like yoga and AA meetings. E153 Matt and Jen
Lily and Nolan talk about sleep issues in the weeks after you quit kratom. NOTE: Jen and Matt are living in FEMA temporary housing post a Florida disaster and have a pop-up emergency internet connection, which caused audio issues in the interview recording. We did the best we could to improve the quality but there are several spots were the guests fade out a little, so please accept our apologies. This week, a couple discuss their quitting journey with Jacob. Born in the 1960s, Matt and Jen both turned to kratom to get off of stronger prescription and street drugs. About 13 years ago, Matt ALMOST (this was one of the audio snafus) lost his leg during a surgery and was prescribed fentanyl patches for pain. Later using kratom as a ramp off and a substitute to such pharmaceuticals, Matt was up to 60g of powder a day and then switched to extracts as he could not stomach kratom powder anymore. After many relapses trying to quit kratom and other drugs, they both decided to try Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) in January 2023. Matt plans to taper off buprenorphine with the injectable option known as Sublocade this year. Despite many tough times, including the losses of a pet, car and home, they successfully interrupted their kratom addiction, and have not become dependent again over the last couple years. Matt warns against the use of 7ohm based on a week of him turning to this kratom alkaloid isolate product when he was out-of-town without buprenorphine.
