In this special episode of LAGIM: A Filipino True Crime Podcast, I delve into a case that, at first glance, seems to have no ties to the Philippines. But dig a little deeper, and an unexpected connection begins to surface. Lisa Marie Young was a vibrant, young Indigenous woman from Nanaimo, British Columbia. She was on the brink of major life changes when she vanished without a trace just before Canada Day in 2002. More than two decades later, no one has been arrested or held accountable for her disappearance.The last person seen with Lisa was Christopher William Adair—a man who has never been thoroughly investigated, arrested, or charged in connection with her case. Yet, many believe he may hold the answers to what truly happened on that fateful night in June 2002.Adair left Canada years ago and has since built a new life abroad. Today, it’s believed that he is living in the Philippines, having fallen in love with a Filipina and integrating into an expat community. As the Philippines is getting ready to vote again, another favourite political hot-button topic is being whipped out to get the masses riled up and divided. The death penalty is a favourite talking point by politicians who wish to project a strong-man position towards their voters who are rightfully tired of crimes happening in the country.But as studies have shown time and time again, the death penalty does not deter crime as addressing crime is all about looking at its root causes and addressing those instead.This all reminded me of a case that caught the nation's attention back in 1994. Today, I will be covering the Leo Echegaray case, which highlighted so many things for me as a teenager who was just forming her opinion on big topics like crime and death. In this episode, I feature three cases that all involve the heinous crime of modern slavery and its iterations. This episode is in commemoration of Anti-Slavery Day, which is celebrated yearly on October 18th.The first case in this episode is from the US and it involves a Filipina who was kept hidden as a slave by her Filipino "employers" for a total of 19 years.The second case is an Australian case that stunned residents of Sydney in the early 2000s. It involves a young Filipina who was initially hired as a babysitter but was quickly disempowered and enslaved by a Filipino-Australian couple.The last case is a very recent one that was only concluded at the end of September. It involves a young 22-year-old Filipina who was fraudulently recruited by a Swiss-Filipino couple who promised her a residence permit and an education. Little did she know, she will be made not only a slave but a subject of the Swiss man's sadistic tendencies.Please listen with care.Towards the end of this episode, I feature a very informative and eye-opening interview with Marissa Begonia from Voices of Domestic Workers - a UK non-profit that is based in London.As their website states, VoDW  "is run by and for migrant domestic workers. In September 1995, Felipe and Evelyn Pestaño were anticipating the return of their son Philip who was working on board the BRP Bacolod. Their son was a young cargo officer in the Philippine Navy. What was supposed to be a heartwarming welcome turned into a bitter and tragic realisation that Philip had apparently died on board the navy ship under very suspicious circumstances. On the 2nd August 2023, Jerhode Jemboy Baltazar and his friend, Sonny Boy, planned a fishing trip to earn a couple of bucks. The boys set out to first clean their boats before sailing out but as they were minding their business, a group of police officers approached their area in Navotas and opened fire.Sonny Boy saw his friend fall into the water, only to never surface alive anymore. Another young soul taken by the very authorities tasked to protect and serve Filipinos.Jemboy's killing ignited discussions around the culture of corruption, violence and impunity within the PNP and how after Duterte's war on drugs, killings of unarmed, mostly poor Filipinos continue. Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs have long been dubbed as the Philippines' modern-day heroes. They leave family and friends, their comfort zones, their culture and homes behing to try their luck in foreign and far-flung countries, hoping to earn a better living than from the few opportunities offered back home.In July 2022, Jullebee Cabilis Ranara, a native of Las Piñas decided to try her luck again in Kuwait after a successful stint in Bahrain some years before. In the early days of her stay with her Kuwaiti employer, there had already been signs that Jullebee may not have been entirely safe. Six months later, she would be found dead in a desert and the way she was found sent shockwaves through Kuwait and the Philippines alike.But here is the thing...Jullebee was not the first and only one who was murdered in Kuwait. On the 4th March, a group of armed men in military gear entered the residence of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo. What looked to be a normal Saturday of meeting his constituents suddenly turned into a nightmare that his family is still living to this very day. On the 5th August 2022, a young student from Palawan went missing. This week's case is a case from the diaspora. A listener suggested this case through the case suggestion list and I am glad I was able to cover it.The case is about a Filipino-American family in California who was considered unassuming and very much run of the mill. At least for those looking from the outside looking in. But all was not well, especially for mother Annamaria Gana who in 2010 received a devastating cancer diagnosis. Everyday was a fight for the mother of two. By May 2011, it all became too much and Annamaria decided to take matters into her own hands. Feeling like her family would not survive without her, she decided to do something that she thought would be in everybody's best interest. In August 2017, young Kian delos Santos was killed during an anti-drug raid conducted in a poor neighbourhood in Caloocan. In the evening of 25th April 1990, life as the Bernabe and Castaños families knew it would change forever. When news of their son and daughter's abduction reached them, they initially had hoped to find young Cochise and Beebom, two bright students who studied law and mass communications at the University of the Philippines, respectively.But the young couple would never come back home. At the crack of dawn on 7th March 2021, the PNP and the Philippine army conducted a simultaneous attack on groups and individuals connected to certain leftist and human rights groups who were suspected of having connections to communist insurgents in Calabarzon.
