Death and Resurrection (Mark 15:21–16:20) – Lesson 23

In this season finale of Lamp Lighters, Lynn Adams, Meredith Weatherby, and Laura Tuma conclude their yearlong journey through the Gospel of Mark by exploring the death and resurrection of Jesus in Mark 15:21–16:20. The conversation reflects on the crucifixion, the courage of unexpected disciples like Simon of Cyrene and Joseph of Arimathea, and the profound meaning of the empty tomb. The hosts also discuss the testimony of the women, the disciples’ struggle to believe the resurrection, and Jesus’ final commissioning of His followers. As the study of Mark comes to a close, this episode returns to the central truth of the Christian faith: the cross, the empty tomb, and the call for every believer to bear witness to the risen Christ.

  2. -1

Jesus Before Pilate (Mark 15:1–20) – Lesson 22

Laura Tuma and Lynn Adams explore Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate in Mark 15:1–20. As the religious leaders press their case and the crowd chooses Barabbas, the conversation reflects on hard-heartedness, the misuse of authority, and the quiet obedience of Jesus as He moves toward the cross. The exchange of the guilty for the innocent offers a striking picture of the gospel at the center of the Passion story.

  3. -2

    Peter’s Fear (Mark 14:52–72) – Lesson 21

As Jesus stands before the Sanhedrin, Peter waits in the courtyard below, frightened and unsure of what will happen next. In this lesson, Meredith Weatherby and Lynn Adams explore Mark’s interwoven account of Jesus’ trial and Peter’s three denials, showing the sharp contrast between Jesus’ faithfulness and Peter’s fear. This episode reflects on the ways we, like Peter, often fall short despite our best intentions. Yet even here, the gospel is clear: our hope does not rest in our ability to remain faithful, but in the steadfast faithfulness of God.

  4. -3

    Abandonment (Mark 14:32–51) – Lesson 20

In this episode of Lamplighters, Jan Skaggs and Lynn Adams walk us into the dark heart of Mark’s Gospel. In Mark 14:32–51, Jesus enters Gethsemane and faces the full weight of what lies ahead—anguish, betrayal, and ultimate abandonment. Jan and Lynn explore Jesus’ deeply human prayer to “Abba,” his request for the cup to pass, and his surrender to the Father’s will. They reflect on the disciples’ failure to watch and pray, Peter’s impulsive violence, Judas’ painful betrayal, and the scattering of the sheep when the Shepherd is struck. This episode invites listeners to consider their own “Gardens of Gethsemane”: Where are we tempted to sleep instead of pray? Where are we overconfident in our strength? What do we do when our world falls apart? Even in failure and fear, God is at work. Through abandonment, surrender, and weakness, the purposes of God continue to unfold.

  5. -4

How Strong Is Your Faith? (Mark 14:1–31) – Lesson 19

In this episode of Lamp Lighters, Lynn Adams and Jan Skaggs walk through Mark 14:1–31, where devotion and betrayal unfold side by side. Framed by Mark’s “sandwich” structure, the anointing at Bethany stands in stark contrast to Judas’ conspiracy. Mary’s costly act of love reveals a faith that trusts Jesus at His word, while Judas’ actions expose a divided heart. As the Passover meal is prepared and the Lord’s Supper is instituted, Jesus delivers two sobering predictions: one disciple will betray Him, and all will fall away. Peter’s bold confidence soon meets its limits, reminding us that sincerity is not the same as strength. The discussion considers what it means to know our own hearts, to resist pride, and to rely moment by moment on Christ. Even in betrayal and denial, God’s purposes stand firm. The question that remains is not simply about Judas or Peter—but about us: How strong is our faith when tested?

  6. -5

Signs of the End of the Age (Mark 13) – Lesson 18

In this episode of the Lamplighters Podcast, Catriona Preston and Lynn Adams explore Mark 13, one of the most challenging and often misunderstood chapters in the Gospel of Mark. As Jesus teaches his disciples on the Mount of Olives during Passion Week, he speaks about coming tribulation, the destruction of the temple, persecution, false messiahs, and the promise of his return. Together, Catriona and Lynn unpack the historical and biblical context behind Jesus’ words and reflect on how this prophecy offers not fear, but hope. This conversation centers on what it means to remain watchful, faithful, and grounded in God’s promises—living each day with trust in the Holy Spirit and confidence that this is not the end of the story.

  7. -6

The Greatest Commandment (Mark 12:28–44) – Lesson 17

In this episode, Lynn Adams is joined by Catriona Preston to explore Jesus’ teaching on the greatest commandment: loving God with all we are and loving our neighbor as ourselves. Through Jesus’ interaction with a sincere scribe and the powerful example of the poor widow, this lesson contrasts genuine devotion with outward religious performance and reminds us that God looks at the heart—not appearances or amounts.

  8. -7

Authorities Question Jesus’ Teaching (Mark 12:1–27) – Lesson 16

Hosts Cindy Young and Lynn Adams explore Mark 12:1–27 as Jesus faces increasing opposition from the religious authorities during Holy Week. Through the parable of the wicked tenants and a series of confrontational questions about taxes and the resurrection, Jesus reveals God’s authority, faithfulness, and ultimate purpose. This episode invites listeners to reflect on how we respond when God’s Word challenges our assumptions and calls us to deeper trust.

  9. -8

Jesus Enters Jerusalem (Mark 11) – Lesson 15

In this episode, hosts Lynn Adams and Cindy Young explore the beginning of Holy Week as Jesus intentionally enters Jerusalem. They unpack the symbolism of the triumphal entry, the significance of Jesus riding a donkey, and what this moment reveals about his identity as a king who comes in peace. The conversation then turns to the cursing of the fig tree and the cleansing of the temple—two intertwined events that expose spiritual barrenness, misplaced ritual, and the consequences of missing God’s purposes. Lynn and Cindy also reflect on the growing tension between Jesus and the religious authorities, highlighting Jesus’ authority, wisdom, and resolve as opposition intensifies. This lesson invites listeners to examine their own lives: Are we bearing fruit? Are our prayers rooted in intimacy with God or empty ritual? And are we following Jesus for what he can do for us—or for who he truly is?

  10. -9

Jesus Predicts His Death (Mark 10:32–52) – Lesson 14

As Jesus and his disciples draw closer to Jerusalem, the tension in the Gospel of Mark continues to build. In this episode, we explore Mark 10:32–52, where Jesus predicts his death for the third time and invites his followers to reconsider what greatness, power, and faithfulness truly look like in God’s kingdom. Laura Tuma walks us through the striking contrasts in this passage: between worldly ambition and servant leadership, between spiritual blindness and true sight. We listen in as James and John ask for positions of honor, even as Jesus speaks plainly about suffering and sacrifice—and we meet Bartimaeus, a blind beggar whose faith allows him to see what others miss. Together, these stories challenge us to reflect on what we are really asking of Jesus, how we respond to his call, and what it means to follow him on the road that leads to the cross. This lesson reminds us that Jesus came not to be served, but to serve—and that true discipleship is marked by dependence, mercy, and trust.

  11. -10

Jesus Continues to Teach the Crowd (Mark 10:1–30) – Lesson 13

In this episode of Lamp Lighters, Jan Skaggs and Lynn Adams step back to take a wide-angle view of Mark 10:1–30, where Jesus intensifies his teaching as he and the disciples move steadily toward Jerusalem. Through three vivid encounters—questions about divorce, the blessing of children, and the challenge given to a rich young man—Jesus reveals the deeper values of God’s kingdom. Each scene touches on a controversial issue, delivers a truth that can feel offensive or convicting, and yet is marked by Jesus’ unwavering gaze of love and compassion. Jan and Lynn explore how these stories are not isolated moral lessons, but interconnected illustrations of what it truly means to follow Jesus with humility, dependence, and trust. As Jesus confronts cultural assumptions about power, status, self-reliance, and worth, listeners are invited to reflect on where God may be calling them toward deeper obedience—and what it might cost. This episode reminds us that discipleship is not about being “good enough,” but about surrendering every part of our lives to Christ and receiving the transforming grace of God’s kingdom.

  12. -11

Teaching the Twelve (Mark 9:30–50) – Lesson 12

Welcome back from the holiday break—this is our first Lamplighters episode of 2026! In Lesson 12, Meredith Weatherby and Lynn Adams walk through Mark 9:30–50 as Jesus shifts from public ministry to focused, intentional teaching of the Twelve. Jesus predicts His death again, and the disciples respond… by arguing about who’s the greatest. Jesus turns their definition of greatness upside down: the first must be last, the greatest must be servant of all, and welcoming the “least” matters more than winning status. The conversation then moves to a surprising moment of gatekeeping (“He’s not one of us”), and Jesus dismantles the disciples’ hierarchy mindset—reminding them that God’s kingdom is bigger than their circle. Finally, Jesus uses vivid, sobering imagery to press the seriousness of sin and stumbling blocks, calling His followers to spiritual clarity, humility, and faithful living. Meredith closes with a simple challenge: don’t aim to be impressive—aim to be faithful. This week, pray for one name and one tangible way to serve.

  13. -12

    The Transfiguration (Mark 9:2–29) – Lesson 11

In this final Lamplighters lesson before our Advent break, Laura Tuma and Lynn Adams explore the theme of spiritual vision through two powerful moments in Mark 9: the Transfiguration and the healing of a boy with an impure spirit. On the mountaintop, Peter, James, and John catch a breathtaking glimpse of Jesus in his glory, alongside Moses and Elijah. Laura and Lynn unpack the rich Old Testament connections, the contrast between living glory and lifeless idols, and God’s command to the disciples: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” From there, the story moves straight into the valley of suffering, where a desperate father pleads for his son’s healing. Jesus responds with both authority and compassion, leading to the honest, enduring prayer of the father: “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” Laura and Lynn reflect on how belief and unbelief can coexist, what it means to develop spiritual vision, and why prayer and regular spiritual practices keep us “prayed up” for the struggles we face. As we enter the season of Advent, this episode invites us to remember that the baby we await in Bethlehem is the same radiant Christ of the mountaintop—and to consider how we will listen and respond to Him in this season.

  14. -13

Who Do You Say I Am? (Mark 8:1–9:1) – Lesson 10

In this pivotal lesson, Beth Feger and Lynn Adams explore Mark 8:1–9:1, where Jesus feeds the four thousand, heals a blind man, and asks his disciples one of the most defining questions in Scripture: “Who do you say I am?” Through moments of misunderstanding, revelation, and rebuke, this passage marks a turning point in the Gospel as Jesus begins to reveal the cost of discipleship. Beth and Lynn discuss the expanding table of God’s compassion, the danger of spiritual blindness, and the invitation to follow Christ—even when it challenges our expectations or comfort.

  15. -14

Clean and Unclean (Mark 7) – Lesson 9

ChatGPT said:In this episode, Lynn Adams and Beth Feger explore what it truly means to be clean or unclean in God’s eyes. Through three encounters—the confrontation with the Pharisees, the faith of a Gentile woman, and the healing of a deaf and mute man—Jesus reveals that purity is a matter of the heart, not external rituals. Lynn and Beth trace how these stories connect to one another, showing how Jesus breaks down barriers, opens ears and hearts, and invites all people into God’s redeeming love.

  16. -15

Jesus Performs Miracles (Mark 6:30–56) – Lesson 8

In this week’s episode, Catherine and Lynn explore Mark 6:30–56, where Jesus invites the disciples to rest—only to be met by yet another pressing crowd. Through the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus walking on water, and the healings at Gennesaret, we see his deep compassion even in the face of interruption and exhaustion. The conversation invites us to consider how Jesus reveals himself in our own storms and how we are called to partner with him in faith and prayer to bring healing to the world.

  17. -16

    A Prophet Without Honor (Mark 6:1–29) – Lesson 7

Lynn Adams welcomes a new voice to the podcast, Kathryn Sedberry, as they explore Mark 6:1–29—a passage that moves from Jesus’ rejection in his hometown to the sending of the Twelve, and finally to the story of John the Baptist’s death. Together, they unpack the differences between belief and faith, and reflect on how a hardened heart can close us off from God’s transforming work. Through the contrasts of unbelief, obedience, and misplaced pride, Lynn and Kathryn invite listeners to consider where our own hearts might need softening to live more fully in faith and trust.

  18. -17

    Jesus Heals (Mark 5) – Lesson 6

Meredith Weatherby returns with Lynn Adams to trace Mark 5’s arc of restoration—from the storm-stilled sea to the storm inside a man haunted by a “legion,” and onward to Jairus’s dying daughter and the woman healed after 12 long years. Together they explore Jesus’ absolute authority over nature, evil, disease, and death; how this scene in Gentile territory signals that God’s reign reaches every corner; and why Jesus won’t let the healed woman remain anonymous—inviting her (and us) into seen-and-known, shalom-shaped relationship. Meredith also shares a personal reflection on “cooperating” with God’s transforming work in us while we wait for healing in others. Discussion prompts surface naturally in the contrasts and links between Jairus and the bleeding woman (status, desperation, “12 years,” faith, and interruption), and in the townspeople’s fear-driven request for Jesus to leave. It’s a rich conversation about restoration, reconciliation, and the courage to let Jesus make us whole.

  19. -18

Jesus Tells Parables (Mark 4) – Lesson 5

Jan Skaggs and Lynn Adams explore why Jesus shifts to parables in Mark 4—and how these deceptively simple stories invite “heart, not head” understanding. Jan explains what a parable is (a story set alongside the kingdom for clarity), why Jesus speaks of insiders and outsiders, and how listening with open hearts reorders our lives around kingdom priorities. In a twist, Jan challenges listeners to sit with the parables themselves this week—leaning on the Holy Spirit and small-group community rather than a guided teaching. The conversation then turns to the storm on the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus’ authority over wind and wave leads into a practical “storm theology”: turn to Christ in the chaos, remember He’s in the boat, and practice trust—with journaled reminders and a simple, embodied prayer of open hands.

  20. -19

Crowds Follow Jesus (Mark 3) – Lesson 4

In Lesson 4 of this season of the Lamp Lighters Podcast, Lynn Adams and Laura Tuma continue the journey through the Gospel of Mark with chapter 3. They explore Jesus’ authority over the Sabbath, the growing opposition from religious leaders, and the significance of his healing ministry. This lesson highlights the vast crowds drawn to Jesus, the calling of the twelve disciples, and Mark’s distinctive “sandwich” structure that deepens our understanding of true discipleship and family in God’s kingdom.

  21. -20

The Conflict Begins (Mark 2) – Lesson 3

In Lesson 3 of Lamp Lighters, Lynn Adams and Laura Tuma explore Mark 2, where a series of stories reveal deepening conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders. From the paralyzed man lowered through a roof, to Jesus dining with tax collectors, to disputes over fasting and Sabbath practices, each scene highlights disagreements about forgiveness, fellowship, fasting, and freedom. These moments not only point to Jesus’ authority but also set in motion the events that would ultimately lead to the cross. Lynn Adams and Laura Tuma invite us to hear these familiar stories with fresh ears, consider how we respond to Jesus’ authority, and reflect on what it means to align our lives with his call.

  22. -21

Jesus in Action (Mark 1:14–45) – Lesson 2

Jesus wastes no time. In Mark 1:14–45, we watch Him step decisively into public ministry—proclaiming the good news, calling the first disciples with a simple “Follow me,” teaching with authority in the synagogue, and healing both in public and in a private home. Meredith Weatherby and Lynn Adams explore Mark’s urgent pace and the difference between kairos (God’s appointed moment) and chronos (clock time), the “Messianic Secret,” and why Jesus withdraws to pray right after a whirlwind day. Finally, a leper approaches—and Jesus does the unthinkable: He reaches out and touches him. This conversation invites us to consider who we’re walking near, how we practice rhythms of action and solitude, and where Jesus may be restoring what feels too big—or too small—for anyone else to heal.

  23. -22

John the Baptist Prepares the Way (Mark 1:1-13) - Lesson 1

Lynn and Meredith open our journey through the Gospel of Mark with a fast-moving look at Mark 1:1–13. In just 13 verses, Mark declares Jesus as “Messiah, Son of God,” introduces John the Baptist preparing the way, and shows Jesus’ baptism and temptation in the wilderness. Along the way, Lynn unpacks why “Christ” is a title (not a last name), how Jesus’ baptism affirms his mission and solidarity with us, and why acknowledging real spiritual opposition matters for our everyday discipleship. Meredith reflects on the power of brevity, the comfort of being God’s beloved, and how God meets us using familiar practices like baptism. The episode closes with practical prompts on preparation, repentance, and living as beloved children of God.
