Sabbath School Lesson 4 Summary – Sin in the Church | Q3 2026

How does a modern believer stand firm when the surrounding culture tries to redefine what is right and wrong? Welcome to a powerful scripture study and interactive Bible study designed to unpack deep biblical truths for your modern walk. In a world that often replaces the concept of sin with mere mistakes or social misbehaviour, the call for the Christian church to remain anchored in holy standards has never been more urgent. In this week's Sabbath School lesson summary, host Rod Butler is joined by Rosanna Laredo and John Kosmeier to dive deep into the book of 1 Corinthians. Together, the panel explores the historical context of the church in Corinth—a community that faced a challenging "knowing-doing gap" by acknowledging God's standards on paper while simultaneously tolerating serious spiritual compromise influenced by outside culture. Packed into a convenient, focused 30-minute format, this session provides the perfect roadmap to help you evaluate your own faith, bridge the gap between biblical knowledge and daily practice, and safeguard your life against cultural drift. In this episode, you will discover:• The profound difference between the secular worldview of "mistakes" and the biblical definition of sin.• How the early church in Corinth struggled with outside cultural influences normalising sin within the church body.• Practical strategies for the modern church to perfectly align its daily practices with its structural faith.• The timeless wisdom of the Apostle Paul's counsel to the Corinthians regarding spiritual accountability and sexual purity. Unity in Christ

John Howard was the second-longest serving Prime Minister of Australia (in a coalition government). When referring to political parties, he famously popularised the saying "Disunity is death.” What about disunity in churches? Today’s lesson will explore how divisions arise in churches, and will investigate practical ways for our congregations to overcome cliques and be united in Christ. The Message of the Cross - 260302

The cross was an intense symbol of Roman torture and shame. Yet in a divided and sophisticated city like Corinth, the apostle Paul refused to rely on human eloquence or philosophy to reach the hearts of the people. Instead, he preached only “Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” Today’s lesson will discuss why this seemingly foolish message transforms lives and remains the central answer to division, to pride, and to sin in every generation. Paul’s Ministry in Corinth - 260301

It might be confounding how messages to a church in ancient Greece are relevant today. But human nature is much the same as it always has been. Today’s lesson begins a new series on the Apostle Paul’s two letters to the Corinthians, and discusses how the problems that Paul encountered in ancient Corinth are strikingly appropriate for us today. Into Eternity - 260213

Our world feels like it’s shaking. People everywhere are anxious, overwhelmed, and wondering where everything is heading. Life has never felt more fragile. Thankfully the Bible insists there is a point to all of this. God has a plan, and history is moving toward a rescue: a glorious eternity for those who faithfully hold on. That’s our focus today’s lesson: Into Eternity. Setbacks - 260211

Today’s lesson deals with setbacks to one’s faith. I once read the story of a boy who was rescued after a terrible incident at sea. His rescuers found him clinging to a rock. They asked him how scared he had been. He replied: “I shook all night, but thankfully the rock did not move.” Can we find a firm rock in our times of trouble and in the setbacks of life? The Apostle Paul wrote that troubles can lead to perseverance, character, and hope. What is the firm basis for hope? Today’s lesson will look into this. Sin, the Gospel, and the Law - 260209

Some people wish there were no speed limits on our roads. They say that people should have the freedom to decide for themselves what is a safe speed to drive. Imagine how chaotic, frightening, and dangerous driving on the roads would be if every person was given that responsibility. Just like road traffic rules are needed to keep order, safety, and the joy of driving, God has laws that govern His creation. Sadly, we have all broken God’s rules and face that penalty. Today’s lesson will investigate God’s laws and the good news concerning who can restore our relationship with Him. Having Faith - 260208

When the sun sinks below the horizon in the evening, we have faith that we will see it rise again in the morning. When we turn on a light switch, we believe the light will go on, even though electricity is invisible. In cases like these, our faith is based on past experience. When it comes to our relationship with God, faith is similar. We have past experience to go by. Like electricity, God is invisible. But we see Him at work. Various Bible verses help us to know about faith. Hebrews tells us that “faith is the evidence of things we cannot see.” Paul tells us that faith is the gift of God. Today’s lesson will endeavour to give insights into faith, as well as what to do with doubt and unbelief. Practical Prayer - 260207

Today’s lesson will review the actual experience of prayer, as practiced in the life of three very diverse biblical characters. Prayer Warriors - 260206

Prayer is often described as talking to God as to a friend. Prayer is therefore a unique privilege. What things are appropriate to talk to God about? How personal can we be? In an attempt to answer this, our study today will look at the spiritual significance of prayer through the lives of some of the Bible’s greatest prayer warriors. The Role of the Bible - 260204

In 2016, the Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year was "post-truth". The definition they gave was ”relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief”. To simplify: facts are secondary, or even irrelevant, when they conflict with what people want to believe. Welcome to the “post-truth” world. Truth is no longer absolute. Everyone can have their own truth based upon their own worldview, and nobody has authority to call out as being wrong. Stay with us for this study, as we discuss why it is vitally important to know objective truth, and the role the Bible has in revealing truth. 14. 288

    Pride Versus Humility - 260203

Today’s lesson will investigate two contrasting qualities: pride and humility. Charles Dickens created a character, Uriah Heep, who was extremely proud of his humility. The Bible gives a painful example of someone else who became proud while living in heaven’s sinless environment, that someone was Satan. Since the human race fell into sin, we have been infected with the problem of pride and selfishness. Thankfully there is a divine solution to this problem. Today’s lesson will unpack that divine solution. To Know God - 260202

To have a strong relationship with God, one needs to understand His character. While our finite minds cannot fully understand God, we can know enough about Him from the Bible to put our total trust in Him. Today’s study will explore how we can know God, and why knowing God is important for having a strong relationship with Him. Reality Check - 260201

The phrase "The truth hurts" means you may have to accept an uncomfortable, unflattering, or harsh reality that challenges your self-image, illusions, beliefs, or ego. Being told the truth, however, is something we all need. Jesus loves His last day church and sent it a truthful message. He gave it a reality check. 17. 285

Standing in All the Will of God - 260113

The phrase "a champion team will always beat a team of champions" emphasises how teamwork can overcome a roster stacked with individual superstars who lack synergy. The apostle Paul showed that mission is teamwork. He assembled his “dream team” of fellow workers to minister to the Colossian church. Stay with us as we discuss Paul’s approach to nurturing the Colossians and how we can apply the same approach in our church mission work. Living With Christ - 260111

There are two forces at work in our world: Good and evil, Christ and Satan. Bad behaviours result from the influence of evil; good behaviours stem from Christ. Behind goodness lies the principle of love. That love flows out of a relationship with Jesus Christ. Today’s study will look at what Paul wrote in the 3rd chapter of his letter to the church at Colossae. While we need to attend to earthly matters, a focus on eternity is essential. Today’s study will reveal Paul encouraging a heavenly focus for all the Colossian believers. Is that good advice for us too? Join us and find out. Complete in Christ - 260110

Were the ten commandments done away with when Christ died and rose again? Are we living today only under grace with no law? If the law is still in force, what role does it play in our salvation when we are saved by faith alone? These are very important questions for Christians. Stay tuned as we see how Paul answered these questions in his letter to the Colossians. Reconciliation and Hope - 260109

The Preeminence of Christ - 260108

Most people believe the most preeminent position one could hold in the world today is the office of the President of the United States. This is because that office controls the largest economy and diplomatic network, and, it has global influence over international politics, economics, security, and culture. The Bible, however, makes very clear who holds the most preeminent position in the world today. Stay with us as we discuss the preeminence of Christ. A Heavenly Citizenship - 260107

Our present series has been looking at Paul’s letters to the churches at Philippi and Colossae. Before we move on to the letter to the Colossians, our study today will take one last look at the final chapter in the letter to the Philippians. This chapter contains many good counsels for daily living. Life is not always easy, and does not always go the way we plan or hope. Thankfully the ‘here and now’ and the future are all in God’s hands. We, as members of God’s heavenly kingdom, have privileges and responsibilities. Let’s take a look at Paul’s closing words in today’s study. Confidence Only in Christ - 260106

The most unbelievable part of the Bible is its central theme: that God saves guilty sinners without them contributing anything! Or as great scholars and theologians have described it: salvation is by grace alone. Why is this beautiful message of salvation so difficult to comprehend? Why does humanity continually fall into the trap of relying on themselves for salvation? How can we avoid this temptation and be found in Jesus? Today’s study will uncover answers to all these questions. Unity Through Humility - 260104

Much is said these days about unity. While everyone acknowledges strength in unity, they see much variety in how they define that unity. Some believe unity is inclusivity, social justice, and collaboration between diverse communities. Others believe it is a commitment to shared values, national identity, and collective strength. But what is unity in the Christian faith? Stay with us as we discuss what it means to have unity through humility. Life and Death - 260103

The longer I live, the more I become aware of the brevity of life. While this could make one pessimistic, for many Christians it emphasises a message of hope for the future eternal life. Here at 3ABN we are in the business of sharing the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. With that thought in mind, I refer to something that the writer of Hebrews said. “through His death, Jesus destroyed the devil who had the power of death.” Today’s study will talk about living for Jesus Christ. It will touch on witnessing for Him, regardless of the consequences. Reasons for Thanksgiving and Prayer - 260102

Being thankful has a powerful effect on our bodies. Studies reveal gratefulness reduces stress and burnout, while enhancing happiness and emotional well-being. But it gets better. The studies also reveal women with high gratitude live about 9% longer on average, thus tying a link between a grateful mindset and an extended lifespan in older adults. As good as that is, there is another powerful link to gratitude and thankfulness. Join us for today’s study looking into the link between prayer and gratitude. God Is Faithful! - 250412

You may remember simple promises your parents would make to you. Things like “Tidy up your room and then you can go out to play.” Parents mostly fulfill their promises. Politicians make promises, but for one reason or another, they can’t always keep them. When the Bible hero Joshua reviewed his life, he could say that not one of God’s promises had failed. Think about how faithful God has been to you. Have His promises been true and trustworthy? Today’s study will dig into God’s faithfulness. Living in the Land - 250411

There are always times in life where you misunderstand what a friend or family member says, or what they do, or what their intentions were. This can cause your view of that person to be significantly tarnished. You might feel that your trust in them has been broken, and this could result in a serious break down in the relationship. Even worse, major conflict can result. Today’s lesson will explore a story from ancient Israel just like that. Ultimate Loyalty: Worship in a War Zone - 250407

Reformer Martin Luther said “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” Luther knew prayer was the priority that empowered and organised the rest of his daily activities.Joshua and the Israelites had crossed the Jordan and were now in enemy territory. Ahead lay challenges in the war zone too great for them to overcome by themselves. Today’s lesson will discuss Israel’s priorities. Were they on weapons, strategies, and manpower? Or, were they on worship and heart preparation through ceremonies, sharpening their spiritual perception and calibrating their loyalty to the Lord? Stay with us for this important discussion. The book of Joshua contains disturbing scenes that on face value may appear to be indiscriminate genocide of the Canaanites. But was it? And if it wasn’t, why wasn’t it? Today’s lesson will delve into the serious questions raised by the concept of a divine or holy war. Did God promise to fight for the Israelites to destroy the Canaanites? You wont want to miss this! The Conflict Behind All Conflicts - 250404

The God of the Old Testament is often seen as a warmonger. He sends His armies to fight and to kill, yet the New Testament refers to Him as the God of Peace. Today’s lesson will investigate Joshua’s war plan to defeat Jericho. It will also examine the very first war, helping us understand God’s attitude towards war. Memorials of Grace - 250403

When the Israelites left Egypt, they were confronted by the Red Sea, an impossible barrier to cross. But God miraculously parted the sea and the people walked across on dry land. 40 years later, between the Israelites and the promised land is another body of water: the Jordan River in spring flood. Join us as we discuss the testing of their faith and God’s memorial of grace. Surprised by Grace - 250402

After 40 years in the wilderness, a second generation of Israelites were standing on the border of the promised land, ready to enter. The threat posed by the Canaanite military had not changed, but the Israelite’s faith had. Today’s lesson will look at their faith, and God’s grace not only to the Israelites, but also to a Canaanite prostitute, her family, and the inhabitants of a Canaanite city called Gibeon. Recipe for Success - 250401

Today’s lesson begins a new series on the Bible book of Joshua. A book written more than three millennia ago. Is it still relevant to us today? What lessons can we learn from Israel’s history? Is their entry into the promised land meaningful for us living in the 21st century? Join us as we explore these questions. The Tabernacle - 250313

This lesson wraps up our study of the Book of Exodus. It has been an exciting journey that began with the Children of Israel falling into Egyptian slavery. It captured their deliverance and the struggles of their journey through the wilderness. The journey has been one of triumph mingled with tragedy, a journey requiring great faith. Today’s episode explores the construction of ‘The Tabernacle’ – the place God chose to dwell among the Israelites. Please, Show Me Your Glory - 250312

Biological growth is a permanent increase in size. It can take place steadily over time, or occur in spurts. Growth can be rapid, or slow. Whatever the type of growth, for living things there is no going back to a smaller size, but a steady march forward. The last few lessons have been tracking the growth of Moses as he grows in his understanding of God. Has Moses finally reached his peak? Today’s lesson will unpack a polite request Moses made to God. Apostasy and Intercession - 250311

Is it possible to experience powerful supernatural miracles from the almighty God every day, and still turn away to worship idols of your own making? Although this sounds ridiculous, that’s exactly what some of the Israelites did. Today’s lesson will investigate their apostasy, and Moses’ intercession. The Covenant and the Blueprint - 250310

A balanced life is found in healthy relationships with people and with God. God showed His desire for closeness when He gave instructions for building a wilderness sanctuary. He wanted to be with His people. How can we, in modern times, grow those human and divine relationships? Today’s lesson will investigate this. Living the Law - 250309

God’s law is expressed through the ten commandments in only 16 verses (see  Exodus 20). Yet the principles of those ten commandments filtered through all situations in the life of the Israelites. They were living the law. Today’s lesson will investigate how these timeless principles applied to the civil laws that governed all aspects of Israelite life. Covenant at Sinai - 250308

We often think of the Exodus story as a journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It is true that the migration was geographical; but it was also theological. When Israel arrived at Mount Sinai, God said that He had brought them to Himself. We can be glad that our best destination is God. We search for meaning in life. We seek for it in money, in power, or in pleasure. But meaning is found in a relationship with our Maker, God Himself. At Mount Sinai, God said, “I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.” Today’s lesson will explore this God-man relationship. The Bread and Water of Life - 250307

The Bible (in Hebrews 11:1) defines faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is the assurance that things will happen just as God promises, even though our immediate surroundings may indeed be very grim. The Israelites experienced God’s power through incredible miracles when they were freed from Egyptian slavery. When they were confronted with problems, however, did those awesome miracles give them unshakeable faith in God’s providence? Today’s study will discuss the faith of the Israelites as they ventured into the wilderness.
