Living in The Word with Dr. Gary Yates

Dr. Yates shows us a cluster of Psalms emphasizing the kingship of the Lord, and how David's house as adopted sons of the Lord were designed to rule over Israel. However, David and his sons could would need a new hope to implement God's kingdom on earth. 

In Season 3 of Living in the Word, Dr. Yates shows us how Jesus changes the way Christians read The Book of Psalms.

In the final part of the new exodus series, we look at how Jesus is the promised, great deliverance over all the powers of evil not just for Israel but also for all the nations.

Just like how Yahweh delivered the Hebrews out of the hand of the Egyptians using the power of the sea in the Old Testament, Jesus uses the same authority over the powers of evil and Satan in the New Testament.

In Mark we see Jesus calm the storm and walk on water, but ultimately these miracles have a deeper meaning in reference to the Old Testament where the chaos of the sea and nature can only be tamed by the one true God, Yahweh!

The Veil is torn! In this episode, Dr. Yates demonstrates how Mark is showing us that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prayer in Isaiah 64, and the second exodus has finally arrived. 

In this episode we look at how Mark quotes the book of Isaiah to show us the ultimate fulfillment of the second exodus is found in Jesus. 

The pattern of exodus in the Old Testament shows us that God rescues and saves those who are in bondage , and Jesus came to be the ultimate deliverance from sin, Satan and death.

In this episode, Dr. Yates looks at the way the gospels show us that Jesus is a prophet not just like Moses and Elijah, but also like Jeremiah predicting national judgement and the destruction of the temple.

In the last episode on the Ethiopian Eunuch, Dr. Yates looks at how the story in Acts 8 is an example of God's reversal of the curse at the Tower of Babel.

In the third part of the Ethiopian eunuch, Dr. Yates walks us through how the eunuch's conversion is a fulfillment of God's desire to reach all peoples.

Through Jesus, the Church receives the blessings of the New Covenant that were originally promised to Israel as they are grafted into the people of God (see Romans 11:17-20). Believers today enjoy the personal knowledge of God and the spiritual enablement that comes from the indwelling Holy Spirit writing God’s law on our hearts and giving us the desire and ability to obey God’s commands. 

We will see in this presentation that the New Covenant brought newness to God’s relationship with his people but that the elements in this covenant were not brand new.

The New Covenant is the bridge that takes us from the Old Testament to the New Testament and that explains how Jesus brings fulfillment of all of God’s covenant promises. The more we see of God’s plan of salvation, the more we understand the fullness of the blessings that we have in Jesus.

God promises to establish David’s throne and kingdom forever through his sons that would come after him. But what happens to those promises with the Babylonian captivity and the end of the Davidic dynasty when the final two kings in the Davidic line (Jehoiachin and Zedekiah) are taken away to Babylon?

This presentation introduces the Davidic Covenant and the special relationship that existed between God and the house of David that is important to Israel’s history and to Christian belief that Jesus is the promised Messiah

The Davidic Covenant in 2 Samuel 7 promised that the Lord would establish David’s throne forever. The covenant was designed to provide leadership for Israel that would enable them to take full possession of the land God had promised to them and for the king to be a godly example of obedience to God’s commands for the people to follow. The problem was that the story of the kings is largely one of failure, much like the larger story of Israel as the people of God.

We are no longer required to live out the details of the Law in the way that Israel was when the Mosaic Covenant was in force. However, the fact that we are no longer under the Law does not mean that the Law no longer has application to our lives as New Testament believers.

We’ve looked at the Mosaic Law and Mosaic Covenant in their Old Testament context and how the Law was central to the Lord’s covenant relationship with Israel. We also need to better understand why the Law has value and benefit for us as New Testament believers. 

This lesson traces the story of recurring failure and disobedience to the Mosaic Law and God’s commandments reflected in the history of Israel from the beginning of the covenant through the rest of the Old Testament. Israel’s inability to keep God’s commandments ultimately led to the judgment of exile. 

To fully appreciate the value of the Mosaic Law for us today, we need to correct some popular misconceptions about the Law and how it functioned within the covenant relationship between the Lord and Israel. The Law was a central part of the loving, gracious relationship between God and Israel that existed within the Mosaic Covenant. The Law did more than point out human sinfulness and show Israel their need for a Savior. 

Many Christians find reading the Torah and Mosaic Law to be difficult or question its need or practical relevance for our daily lives. We must begin by understanding the role, purpose, and function of the Mosaic Covenant and the Mosaic Law within the grand narrative of salvation history. 

Faithfulness is required to enjoy the covenant blessings, but the Lord guarantees the full and complete fulfillment of the covenant promises.

We see that the covenant relationship between God and Abraham involves both promise and obligation. God promises Abraham that he will make him a great nation, give his descendants a land, and make him a blessing to all peoples. Nevertheless, the covenant also has conditions and obligations.

Through Abraham and Israel, God implements the strategy of working through his chosen people to bring blessing and salvation to all peoples in the place of cursing and judgment.

The Noahic covenant in Genesis 9 is like other biblical covenants in that it includes both promise and obligation. The promise is that God will never again send a judgment like the flood for as long as the earth endures. Humanity and the order of creation will continue. But, the responsibility given to humanity is the requirement to restrain the violence and bloodshed that led to the judgment of the flood. 

The first explicit use of the word “covenant” is found in Genesis 6 and 9 as God establishes a covenant with Noah that applies to all of humanity, but this covenant is also connected to the relationship that existed between God and Adam from the very beginning.
