Living With an Invisible Learning Challenge
by Jennifer Purcell
Have you ever wondered what it is like to live with an invisible learning disability? Well then, step into my and others’ world of Living with Multi-Learning Differences (MLDs). I want to provide a podcast for nuerodivergents or someone who knows them and wants to help improve their life. Awareness about MLDs should be raised because the public needs to be more knowledgeable about them. This can be hard to do because many of the learning disabilities that someone can have aren't obvious.

Your Wings, Your Way
Not all advice fits every brain. In this episode, we explore how neurodivergent individuals can use critical thinking, self-awareness, and lived experience to evaluate advice instead of accepting it automatically. From neurodivergence and comorbidity to resilience and the “Inner Light” philosophy, this conversation is about finding what truly works for you.Use this link to find my other podcasts, Etsy Shop, and Tailored Tech Services: https://linktr.ee/JenniferPTTS?utm_source=linktree_profile_share

The Mask We Wear
This episode explores how people with invisible learning challenges use “masking” and perfectionism to hide struggles rooted in shame—a concept defined by Brené Brown as feeling unworthy of belonging. It explains how repeated experiences of misunderstanding turn mistakes into identity, leading to exhaustion and disconnection. The podcast encourages embracing vulnerability, normalizing needs, and making small, intentional “reveals” to replace shame with empathy and authentic connection.Use this link to find my other podcasts, Etsy Shop, and Tailored Tech Services: https://linktr.ee/JenniferPTTS?utm_source=linktree_profile_share

Interview with Rev. Dr. Xenia Barnes and Me (Part 1)
This episode features a conversation with Rev. Dr. Xenia Barnes exploring lived experiences of neurodivergence and chronic conditions, and how systems—especially workplaces and healthcare—often fall short in supporting individual needs. Together, they examine the gap between performative inclusion and true accessibility, highlighting how rigid, one-size-fits-all policies, complex accommodation processes, and a lack of empathy create real barriers. The discussion also addresses the emotional toll of masking, outdated productivity measures that prioritize presence over results, and the discouragement many face when seeking support. These challenges are further compounded for Black women, who experience additional stigma and inequities in accessing mental health resources and accommodations. Ultimately, the conversation calls for more flexible, personalized, and compassionate approaches that normalize support, embrace neurodiversity as a strength, and foster more inclusive and effective workplaces. Myths vs Facts: NLD, Neurodivergence & Comorbidities
This podcast script debunks common misconceptions surrounding Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD), emphasizing that co-occurring conditions like ADHD, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities are the rule rather than the exception. Rather than viewing these traits as childhood-only deficits or a lack of intelligence, the script highlights that understanding the scientific facts empowers neurodivergent adults to build resilience and sharp problem-solving skills. Ultimately, embracing one's complete neurodivergent profile helps dismantle internalized blame, paving the way for strong self-advocacy and personalized systems of support.https://linktr.ee/JenniferPTTS?utm_source=linktree_profile_shareArticles Cited in This EpisodeMasking in Neurodivergent Adults: Psychological Costs and Coping Strategies – Autism Research, 2022https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aur.2478Neurodiversity: Definitions, Prevalence, and Clinical Implications – MDPI Social Sciences, 2023https://www.mdpi.com/2428-6200/3/4/91Emotional Awareness and Cognitive Strengths in NLD – Frontiers in Psychology, 2023https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2023.12345/fullSensory Hypersensitivity and Migraine: Mechanisms and Clinical Implications – ScienceDirect, 2020https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S003537872030463X

The Rush Trap: Slowing Down to Move Forward
The Rush Trap: Slowing Down to Move Forward explores why many neurodivergent people feel driven to start tasks before fully planning, a pattern rooted in executive function differences rather than laziness. The episode explains how ADHD-related impulsivity, dopamine needs, time blindness, and autism-related overwhelm or masking can fuel this urge to rush. It offers compassionate, research-informed strategies—like brief planning pauses, simple checklists, micro-steps, and body doubling—to help slow down, reduce stress, and work more effectively.https://linktr.ee/JenniferPTTS?utm_source=linktree_profile_shareHere are the links from the articles referenced in the script:https://www.problemshared.net/resources/neurodiversity-and-executive-functionhttps://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2024/10/21/what-are-executive-function-delays-research-shows-they-re-similar-in-adhd-and-autism.htmlhttps://thinkadhd.co.uk/adhd-and/adhd-and-motivation/https://add.org/adhd-paralysis/https://www.shimmer.care/adhd-101/completing-taskshttps://affinitypsych.com/why-do-people-with-adhd-struggle-to-complete-tasks/https://www.pbsmidwest.com/blog/overcoming-task-avoidance-using-momentum-based-strategieshttps://actifyaba.com/how-to-support-task-initiation-in-autism-with-practical-tips/https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/behaviour/demand-avoidancehttps://aidecanada.ca/resources/learn/asd-id-core-knowledge/addressing-underlying-causes-of-low-motivation-and-task-avoidancehttps://www.adhdcentre.co.uk/tips-for-adhd-impulse-control-in-adults/https://laconciergepsychologist.com/blog/10-strategies-managing-adhd-impulsivity/https://www.additudemag.com/how-do-i-stop-being-impulsive-adhd/

Health Premiums, Policy, and the Neurodivergent Community
This episode of Living with Invisible Learning Challenges explores how rising health insurance premiums and government policy decisions affect everyone, while hitting neurodivergent individuals especially hard. Because many neurodivergent people rely on ongoing, specialized care, even small increases in premiums, deductibles, or cost-sharing can limit access to therapy, diagnoses, and mental health services. Drawing on research from KFF and the Center for American Progress, the episode highlights gaps in mental health parity, threats to Medicaid, and how policy choices directly shape who can afford essential care—underscoring the need for advocacy, informed decision-making, and community support.https://linktr.ee/JenniferPTTS?utm_source=linktree_profile_shareArticles & Research Referenced (Links):Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) – Effects of premiums and cost sharing on low-income populations:https://www.kff.org/report-section/the-effects-of-premiums-and-cost-sharing-on-low-income-populations-updated-review-of-research-findings-table-3/KFF / STAT – Health insurance premiums continue to rise:https://www.statnews.com/2025/10/22/health-insurance-premiums-up-6-percent-kff-reports/Center for American Progress – The Behavioral Health Care Affordability Problem:https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-behavioral-health-care-affordability-problem/Commonwealth Fund – Behavioral health parity challenges:https://www.commonwealthfund.org/blog/2026/behavioral-health-parity-takes-step-backward-under-trump-administrationAmerican Bar Association – Weakening Medicaid and health equity:https://www.americanbar.org/groups/crsj/resources/human-rights/2025-october/weakening-medicaid-erodes-progress/Reuters / KFF Poll – Public support for extending ACA tax credits:https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/most-americans-back-extending-aca-tax-credits-kff-poll-shows-2025-10-03/

Progress Isn’t Linear: A Neurodivergent Reality
This episode reframes “two steps forward, one step back” as a natural and meaningful pattern of growth for neurodivergent people and those with invisible learning challenges. Jennifer explains why nonlinear progress happens—due to brain variability, environmental mismatches, and sensory or emotional fatigue—and why a “step back” is often a signal to rest, adjust, or recalibrate rather than a failure. Through reflection and practical strategies, listeners are reminded that progress isn’t erased by setbacks and forward movement still counts, even when the path isn’t linear. https://linktr.ee/JenniferPTTS?utm_source=linktree_profile_shareReferences / Suggested readingStark, P. Am I Enough? My Journey of Becoming
A personal story shared with respect for experiences different from my own. Today, I want to talk about something deeply personal and something that’s been on my mind for a while. It’s about relating to someone you admire, even if your lived experiences are profoundly different. And for me, that person is Michelle Obama. I've been reading her book, Becoming, and there's a part of it that hit me right in the gut. She talks about the feeling of asking herself, "Am I enough?" “I Am” vs. “I Have”: A Linguistic Identity Crisis
This episode explores how the language we use—like “the migraine” vs. “my migraine” or “autistic” vs. “person with autism”—shapes identity, perception, and even the experience of chronic pain. Drawing from personal reflections, research, and tools like the Curable app, we dive into the impact of word choice on neurodivergence, stigma, and healing. Ultimately, we examine how thoughtful language can create distance from suffering, foster empowerment, and reflect the complex ways we define ourselves.Links for articles: https://disabilityrightstx.org/en/2023/04/13/identity-first-language-vs-people-first-language/?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://autisticadvocacy.org/about-asan/identity-first-language/?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900%2823%2900654-5/fulltext?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://www.psypost.org/neuroscience-study-reveals-how-language-affects-pain-processing-among-bilingual-individuals/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#google_vignettehttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34462809/Link for Patreon: patreon.com/LivingWithAnInvisibleLearningChallengeLinks for new podcasts:Shero: Be Your Own Hero Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/1O7Mb26wUJIsGzZPHuFlhX?si=c3b2fabc1f334284Chats, Barks, & Growls: Convos With My Pet Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/74BJO1eOWkpFGN5fT7qJHh?si=4440df59d52c4522Think Out: Free Your Imagination Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/episode/71UWHOgbkYtNoHiUagruBj?si=3d96889cfd2f487bMy platforms:1. https://site-y2pc01yz2.godaddysites.com/2. https://www.facebook.com/livingwithnld?view_public_for=107332511122585#3. https://www.instagram.com/livingwithmultilds/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr#4. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOqAA0b3-C-qDkhKwCmaaZg

Relationships & Neurodivergence: Endings
Neurodivergent individuals experience relationship endings with heightened intensity due to factors like deep emotional investment, trauma sensitivity, and communication differences. Articles by Kristy Forbes, Natalie Roberts, and Laurie Budlong Morse explore these challenges, highlighting the impact of rejection, the struggle for self-identity within neurodiverse relationships, and the importance of fostering connection through understanding and cooperation. These insights emphasize the need for self-compassion, acceptance of impermanence, and the development of effective communication strategies to navigate the complexities of neurodiverse relationships and heal from breakups.Links for articles: https://www.kristyforbes.com.au/blog/Failed%20relationships%20&%20neurodivergencehttps://natalieroberts.com/mystory/https://medium.com/@laurie_budlongmorse/the-4-part-process-neurodiverse-couples-need-to-know-your-relationship-roadmap-a58ffd4d4b34Link for Patreon: patreon.com/LivingWithAnInvisibleLearningChallengeLinks for new podcasts:Shero: Be Your Own Hero Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/1O7Mb26wUJIsGzZPHuFlhX?si=c3b2fabc1f334284Chats, Barks, & Growls: Convos With My Pet Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/74BJO1eOWkpFGN5fT7qJHh?si=4440df59d52c4522Think Out: Free Your Imagination Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/episode/71UWHOgbkYtNoHiUagruBj?si=3d96889cfd2f487bMy platforms:1. https://site-y2pc01yz2.godaddysites.com/2. https://www.facebook.com/livingwithnld?view_public_for=107332511122585#3. https://www.instagram.com/livingwithmultilds/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr#4. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOqAA0b3-C-qDkhKwCmaaZg

Interview with Me and Reuben (Part 2)
This is the second part to the interview with Reuben. It is about his teaching for math at a high school in Indianapolis, Indiana. I asked him questions about how his teaching dynamics changed before, during and after the pandemic. Reuben Benzel has been teaching high school mathematics for the past 12 years. He has a BA in Economics from Oberlin College and a MAT from Marian University. Outside of the math classroom, Mr. Benzel sponsors Innovate WithIn, a Shark Tank like competition for high school students sponsored by the StartEdUpFoundation. He participates in the StartEdUp Innovation Educator Fellowship. Outside of the walls of school, Mr. Benzel is interested in trends in educational technology and spends time with his 8 year old daughter Alice. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Have you ever wondered what it is like to live with an invisible learning disability? Well then, step into my and others’ world of Living with Multi-Learning Differences (MLDs). I want to provide a podcast for nuerodivergents or someone who knows them and wants to help improve their life. Awareness about MLDs should be raised because the public needs to be more knowledgeable about them. This can be hard to do because many of the learning disabilities that someone can have aren't obvious.
