Locked On Golden Knights - Daily Podcast On the Vegas Golden Knights

The 13-day preseason condensed camp opens today and new head coach Ryan Craig and the VGK front office will be looking for several answers.  Craig said this week that he plans to play both goalies this season, plans to put a puck-mover on each D pairing, wants the defense more involved in the offense and wants Jack Eichel to shoot the puck more, especially on the power play. G-M Kelly McCrimmon says there is a sense of urgency in this camp.  We look at position battles going into camp and there were a number of late signings around the league and three new $10-million contracts signed before the new CBA went into effect.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Who are some of the under-the-radar players that could make an impression in VGK's camp?  Who could become the next Braeden Bowman?  We have a list of prospects.  Juho Piiparinen was recalled from Liiga and the defenseman will now be attending VGK camp Wednesday. And, what was VGK's revenue this past season?  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. Bonus issued as nonwithdrawable free bets that expires in 14 days. We debate the Mark Stone extension.  Was it a loyalty deal?  Did VGK overpay Stone, who is injury-prone at $9m AAV,  We also discuss whether VGK should have extended Pavel Dorofeyev rather than gamble on Stone on a two-year deal.  Is it a smart bet or did VGK overpay its Captain.  VGK's top prospect Trevor Connolly was injured again this weekend.  He was boarded in a retaliation hit and missed Sunday's game vs the Avs.  And, VGK's camp opens Wednesday and there is preseason hockey on the road against the Kings on Saturday.FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Braeden Bowman inked a six-year contract extension Thursday worth $3.4-million AAV. We were surprised it was that long of a term in the deal. Bowman will be 29-years old by the end of the contract and could miss out on a much larger contract. Other young depth players are also signing larger contracts.  Kelly McCrimmon said Bowman will be an everyday player following VGK's playoff run. He had 26 points in 54 games.  Bowman started fast but hit the rookie wall. VGK's Rookie Camp is this weekend.  One day of camp then games Friday and Saturday vs the Mammoth and Avalanche.  This could be a really important camp.  And, it's WTF Day! We have comments from fans.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

The Golden Knights don't have the depth currently to compete with the top-tier teams, especially teams like Dallas and Colorado in the Western Conference.  The road to a Cup title might have to go through the Stars or Avalanche this season and VGK, at least on paper, falls short in the depth category. Of course, things could change for VGK.  But we have a sense that depth scoring could be an issue for the Golden Knights.  And what about depth pieces behind key players?  How would VGK replace Jack Eichel or Mitch Marner, if they aren't able to go?  We talk about Mitch Marner and fans and media still hounding him.  And, Chris Krieder says he will sit if he doesn't like the team that picks him up off waivers.  His contract was terminated by the Ducks yesterday.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Among the new rules under the Collective Bargaining agreement that goes into effect starting Sept 16: no more fitness tests, new contract rules (7 year max contracts, 6 years for UFAs), mandatory EBUGs and the beginning of a new 84 game season. Fitness testing was a fixture in camps for decades.  The NHL and NHLPA felt players typically come into camp in elite shape. The minimum salary rises to $850k this season as well.   The NHL salary cap figures show tremendous growth for the league and could be over $113.5 million within the next two seasons - this means bigger contracts for players. And VGK had avails for Rasmus Andersson and Braeden Bowman at its annual golf tournament.FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. We question whether VGK will get out to its signature fast start this season following a shortened pre-season with a new head coach and some new players in the lineup. Plus we have to worry about the team's chemistry early on.  A lot of the work by veterans especially, has to be done individually.  Players have to report in hockey shape and need to buy-in to a new system. And, under the new CBA, most vets (at least 100 games played) aren't forced to play in preseason. Veterans can only dress for two of the four preseason games.  We also talk about VGK's Professional Tryout history.  And, are teams paying too much for young, unproven talent around the league?FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Who will fill roster gaps before camp begins?  VGK could pick from a variety of still unsigned UFA's if they can clear cap space.  Former Golden Knights Reilly Smith, Brandon Saad and Ben Hutton are still unsigned.  Reilly Smith could be a good choice based on his familiarity with the organization.  Some of the other names around the league that are still available are: Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrik Laine and Connor Ingram.  VGK could invite at least one of the players mentioned to camp on a PTO. First-year head coach Ryan Craig says there won't be a significant overhaul of the VGK system, but rather he will make some "tweaks" to what the club is doing now.  We went back to what Craig was doing in Henderson and as a player - and the keys to success were a relentless forecheck and netfront presence.  We discuss other tweaks we will see this season.  We put tangible goals for VGK's goaltenders to reach this season.  And, it's the 4th Anniversary of WTF - What The Friday. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. AFP Analytics gave us new projections for Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner's value in the exploding salary market.  Eichel's contract would be valued around $17.7-million AAV.  Marner $15.3-million.  Eichel's salary projection would jump $4.2-million from a deal he signed just a year ago.  Marner's value has increased by $3.3-million.  It would have cost VGK millions more if they had to lock down these two players right now.  Eichel was ranked sixth in the latest NHL Network rankings for centers. He has had back-to-back 90 point seasons.  We could see another step forward for Eichel this season.  And, we talk about VGK's ticket sales drive and tonight's open house at T-Mobile Arena.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. VGK is mentioned, as usual, in the tradewinds for goalie Connor Hellebuyck.  The Golden Knights don't have the cap space to pay for the three-time Vezina trophy winner and USA Gold Medalist.  But they might be able to meet the demands of a top-six player, perhaps Tomas Hertl, a goalie (Adin Hill) and picks or a prospect.  The usual suspects are in the conversation.  That's when GM Kelly McCrimmon typically gets involved.  Moreso if a team like San Jose, or other divisional teams are in the mix.  We talk about Cale Makar's new contract, as he will now make $20.4 million AAV under his new deal.  He's the richest player in league history... for now.  And VGK will be on national TV 15 times this season, tying last year's mark.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A recent fan poll by the Athletic has confidence in VGK's front office dropping.  VGK has fallen from 6th last year to number 11 in the latest poll.  Fans cited a lack of movement during the offseason to add more pieces, trading away popular players like Pavel Dorofeyev and Keegan Kolesar, and not doing enough with player development.  NHL expansion to Texas is here!  Which city gets the franchise and will the playoffs also be expanded?  And, it's Fantasy Draft season.  We look at where Golden Knights players are ranked.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. The Golden Knights have had some marketing campaigns that have stuck over the first nine years of existence.  The most important campaign is one that wasn't planned and grew out of the October 1st tragedy.  "Vegas Born" was a slogan that galvanized the fan base and helped in the healing process following the tragedy.  The tagline is still used today.  It has led to merch sales and many have said it has become a global movement.  Our players we miss and don't miss aren't perhaps ones that fans think of off the top.  But we have our own interesting list of players on both sides.  Some might surprise you.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. If you were starting a franchise today, which Golden Knights player would you build your team around.  Of course Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner were our top two picks.  But was there a third VGK player on the team currently that we felt you could build a franchise around?  We look at VGK's offseason, rated as one of the worst (24th) in the Hockey News off-season rankings.  A year ago VGK had a terrific off-season when they landed Mitch Marner.  More players left the organzation this summer, than we brought in.  Plus the team lost free agent Pavel Dorofeyev. Carter Hart's name is back in the news cycle.  He and four other Hockey Canada players have been suspended from international play.  Hart can't participate in any internationally sanctioned Canadian events for the next 15 months.  The five were acquitted from charges in the case, but a board of appeals ruled the teammates breached Team Canada's Code of Conduct. There will be no further sanctions from the NHL, as Hart already was suspended by the league. VGK appears to be out of the Dylan Larkin sweepstakes.  VGK and the Florida Panthers are backing off in their interest for Larkin, according to Michael Russo from The Sheet. And, we discuss VGK's lack of center depth. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Travel, fatigue and a variety of other elements typical come into play when teams, like VGK, have scheduled losses on their schedule.  Being the Western Conference champions, the Golden Knights will have a target on their back and teams will have them circled on the schedule.  VGK will have some baked in losses.   We also discuss some strong stats from the John Tortorella Era (30 games.)  VGK was solid on the rush and with high danger shots.  Ryan Craig was with the parent club during the playoffs and hopefully he took notes.  And, who will Craig hitch his wagon to this season?  What player or players are most important to him on this team?  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. The Athletic rates tiers of projected Hall of Famers.  Alex Pietrangelo is semi-retired as the Golden Knights placed him on LTIR with multiple lingering injuries.  But it appears Petro is a can't miss Hall of Famer with two Stanley Cups, a former captain, and a tough defenseman.  Mark Stone needs to round out his career and Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner have to do more, but we feel their best days are ahead of them. In the Pacific Division, Seattle and Vancouver have the largest projected cap space remaining, the Golden Knights have the least amount of room.  We look at teams in the Pacific and how much room they have to make deals now or at the trade deadline.  We also look at where some of the inaugural season VGK players are at today.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. The NHL Network dropped Shea Theodore to 19th in its Top 20 defensemen poll. Are the Golden Knights days of having elite defensemen over?  No other defensemen are listed in the poll. We ask is VGK's blueline reputation crushed? Dylan Larkin's name keeps floating around and the Golden Knights are one of four teams that have reached out about a deal for the star center.  However, Detroit says it now wants a team's star center in exchange.  And, VGK will not part with Jack Eichel, who has a new contract that takes effect this season.  And a poll of 19,000 fans ranks teams that will not win a Stanley Cup over the next decade.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Trevor Connelly's breakout potential for VGK is debated.  Is he ready to take the leap to the next level.  Could Connelly eventually take the place of Pavel Dorofeyev?  He is just 20 years old and comes off his first AHL season, where he played for new Golden Knights head coach Ryan Craig. Injuries have held down Connelly in the past and he's hoping to have an injury-free season to show his full potential, when called up.  We talk about the Golden Knights softening demand for season tickets as the club put several 10 game packages on sale.  And, it's WTF day with our chirps and yours.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. VGK players save millions due to Nevada being a income tax free state. The Golden Knights tax edge gives them an unfair advantage.  We talked about Macklin Celebrini's new contract of $18.8 million AAV.  He loses close to $3 million of his salary annually due to California's state income tax.   How will high-tax teams continue to compete.   We talk about VGK players who were in fights this past season.  The Golden Knights were involved in 20 fights but Jeremy Lauzon and now-departed Keegan Kolesar particpated in half of them.  And, we discuss whether the Golden Knights take on the personality of their coach Ryan Craig when it comes to physicality.    FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Is Mitch Marner's two-way game undervalued when it comes to ranking the top wingers in the game?  Marner was ranked fourth by NHL Network behind Kucherov, Pastrnak and Kaprizov.  We make an argument that Marner should be ranked third over an often-injured Kirill Kaprizov.  We know one thing is for sure, Marner is one of the most elite players at his position.  He played center a lot too for VGK this past season due to injuries.  The Hanifin-Andersson pairing just isn't working within VGK's system. They really clicked together in Calgary, but have not been able to find the chemistry yet.  They need to become the top pairing eventually, because their contracts are lenghty.  And we look at the August calendar ahead for VGK. We look at reasons why the VGK power play collapsed during the Stanley Cup Final.  VGK's scoring percentage with the man advantage in the Cup Final was just 11.1%.  During the regular season, the Golden Knights were ranked sixth on the power play.   What will Ryan Craig do to fix the power play in his initial season?  It appears Houston is next up in expansion. Carter Hart has a lot to prove in the final year of his two-year contract.  He started all 22 games in the playoffs last season and enters the season as VGK's top goalie.  Hart has earned more than $16m in his career and is banking on a solid season before free agency.  His checkered past with Team Canada could hold him back from making a lot of money as a free agent next summer. He will be looking for a long-term contract and will be 28 years old this season.  We talk about goalie tandems - and VGK needs to be stronger in the net this season.  The defensive structure has to tighten up as well to help its goaltenders.  And, it's WTF day with your comments.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Golden Knights, in Vegas parlance, played their cards right.  They signed Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner to contract extensions before the latest market explosion.  Macklin Celebrini inked a five-year extension yesterday worth $18.8m AAV.  The Golden Knights signed its two superstars - Eichel $13.5 AAV, Marner $12 million, before massive contracts exploded.  Leo Carlsson, Connor Bedard and now Celebrini have signed huge deals recently.  We discuss who we feel might be the first Golden Knight to sign a mega-deal.  And, Alexander Holtz' name keeps appearing on projected lineup lists.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. We address whether Joel Ward can smash barriers and become just the second black head coach in the NHL. According to The Athletic, which did a recent feature on Ward, in the more than 100 years of its existence, there has been only one black head coach hired and that was Dirk Graham in 1998. Ward said he wants to become an NHL head coach.  He was promoted to head coach of the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL following Ryan Craig's promotion to the Golden Knights.  Ward has been an assistant in both in AHL and NHL with the Golden Knights organization.   We look at what was the best offseason move by VGK.  And, is Patrik Laine worth a PTO in Las Vegas.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. John Tortorella explained in a recent interview that he wanted to stay with VGK to finish business here in Las Vegas.  But he says Kelly McCrimmon told him within a minute of meeting with him that Ryan Craig was going to coach the Golden Knights moving forward.  Tortorella said he liked the team and came to Las Vegas to build the team's confidence.  He stabilized the VGK locker room.  Torts also explains why he blew off the press conference that cost him $100,000 and VGK had to forfeit its second round pick.  Adin Hill's contract is one of the top worst contracts in the league according to the Athletic.  And, we discuss whether Ryan Reaves would be a good fit for his final season with VGK. Mitch Marner's agent Darren Ferris opens some old wounds saying Toronto didn't always have Mitch Marner's back and Marner basically got screwed on his entry level contract.  Ferris blasted the Leafs organization on a recent Puck Pedia Podcast.  He said issues began with the first Entry Level Deal when performance bonuses were left out.  But we ask why, after eleven years, is his agent bringing this up now?  Ferris said Marner was made out to be the villain in the end in Toronto. VGK will have the fourth easiest schedule this upcoming season.  We thought the schedule was favorable when it first came out, but this reinforces what we thought.  The Edmonton Oilers will have the easiest schedule in the Pacific Division.  Toronto has the toughest schedule in the league.  We discuss what we believe is Victor Olafsson's ceiling and floor.  We realize he will start on the third line, but we could see him moving up in the lineup at times.  Olafsson will also be utilized on the power play due to his lethal one-timer.  And, we discuss Keegan Kolesar's new role in Detroit. Kelly McCrimmon is gambling on his top six.  The Golden Knights are top-heavy and could be lacking some balance heading into the season.  VGK is betting on its future to fill in some gaps this season.  But the third and fourth lines, as they stand now, do not seem like they can produce a lot of scoring punch.  The Golden Knights could be relying on Ryan Craig's developmental touch for the first time in team history.  We also discuss how Mitch Marner has become a model citizen in Las Vegas.  And, the impact of Dallas Stars cornerstone Jason Robertson signing a one year deal.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We dive into Adin Hill's stats and whether he can rebound from a poor season.  Was this past season part of a decline or was it just a fluke season with the Golden Knights?   Is there a redemption season ahead?  Currently Hill is still a VGK team member.  We know that Kelly McCrimmon believes Hill can bounce back next season, but he also has been publicly shopping Hill, and there have been no takers so far due to Hill's poor play coupled with his high salary.  It's the Dog Days of Summer so we talk about some of our VGK Dawgs from this past season.  And VGK had 6 of the top 10 hitters in the post-season and had a top ten team in hits this past season.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. Ryan Craig basically outmaneuvered the Golden Knights.  He had all the leverage to become VGK's new head coach. His contract with AHL Henderson ran out and George McPhee said this week that teams were inquiring about wanting to interview the on-the-rise coach for head coaching positions.  When it came down to it, Craig held all the cards.  It was either hire him as the head coach now, or he would leave for another opportunity.  Ultimately John Tortorella was sent packing, and Craig takes over the reins as the Golden Knights head coach.  VGK will open with the Conor Bedard-less Chicago Blackhawks on opening night.  The remainder of the NHL schedule will be released today. There was a huge impact with the Olympic games for VGK with eight players representing five countries.  It took a while for VGK to return to normalcy with five players in the Gold Medal game.  VGK defeated the Kings in the first game back, but proceeded to lose six of seven games and it eventually cost Bruce Cassidy his job.  Cassidy was also affected by participating with Team Canada. The Golden Knights have to fill some holes at forward spots this offseason - either internally or through trades. Competition in camp and throughout the early season should provide some answers, but VGK is still looking to fill a wing spot vacated by Pavel Dorofeyev, two wingers on the third line and a bottom-six utility role.  The youth has to step up at this time of the season.  VGK doesn't have the necessary depth on paper at this time of the off-season.  There are concerns with camp a couple of months away.  We discuss remaining free agents who could fit into VGK's lineup, and we NBA expansion is a hot topic and Bill Foley is politicking to be part of the ownership group.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. We list our major areas of concern heading into the season and every one of them ties into roster turnover, coaching fit and whether VGK can replace 37 Pavel Dorofeyev goals.  The Golden Knights also have some aging veterans in their lineup and we need to see if the team has chemistry, especially early in the season.  We compare the current roster with last year's roster around this time.  And it's time for WTF - What the Friday with chirps and comments.    FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. The Golden Knights made four trades already this post-season.  A league-wide trend saw 83 players dealt in a 13-day span.  Kelly McCrimmon explained to the mdeia that a lot of teams were forced to make trades this season against the rising cap and a lack of top players in free agency. McCrimmon was able to shed salary and restock draft picks. We discuss how John Tortorella unlocked Mitch Marner in the short time he was here as Marner had 29 points in the playoffs to lead all players.  And we talk about HC Ryan Craig retaining the coaching staff, save one position. All three key coaches returned.    FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. Bonus issued as nonwithdrawable free bets that expires in 14 days. Restrictions apply. Craig Berube said this week that he thought Mitch Marner was the emotional leader of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  And he said he felt the Leafs missed his energy this past season.  The Leafs failed to make the playoffs and Berube lost his job behind the bench.  Berube said Marner brought the energy and emotion to the game.  He said he consistently brought emotion and energy to the game - in practice and during games.  We saw Marner's energy here in Las Vegas in his initial season.  John Tortorella unlocked playoff Marner, as he led all scorers with 29 playoff points.  We discussed some of the areas the Golden Knights can improve on this season.  It's a copycat league so we discuss what VGK can basically steal from the Hurricanes that was successful in the playoffs.  And, Chris Gawlik has some concerns about season ticket prices as the salary cap rises.   FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states.
