The Golden Knights have fewer back-to-backs, shorter road trips and schedule that sets them up for a fast start.  The NHL released its schedule for the upcoming season Thursday.  VGK has just eight back-to-backs (Pittsburgh leads the league with 15.)  The Golden Knights will not be playing five-game road swings this season, although they have five, four-game road trips.  And the schedule is favorable overall for first year head coach Ryan Craig.  We have our circled games for the upcoming season.  And, WTF is back with your comments. Ryan Craig basically outmaneuvered the Golden Knights.  He had all the leverage to become VGK's new head coach. His contract with AHL Henderson ran out and George McPhee said this week that teams were inquiring about wanting to interview the on-the-rise coach for head coaching positions.  When it came down to it, Craig held all the cards.  It was either hire him as the head coach now, or he would leave for another opportunity.  Ultimately John Tortorella was sent packing, and Craig takes over the reins as the Golden Knights head coach.  VGK will open with the Conor Bedard-less Chicago Blackhawks on opening night.  The remainder of the NHL schedule will be released today. George McPhee appeared on the Cam and Strick podcast Tuesday and answered a lot of questions about the organization starting with the hiring of John Tortorella and the firing of Bruce Cassidy, who McPhee, the President of Hockey Operations, finally admitted Cassidy lost the locker room.  There were a lot of interesting topics covered and we have reactions on today's episode.  McPhee said Tortorella never should have blown off the post-game presser after the Game 6 Anaheim win, which cost VGK a second round draft pick.  We discuss how Bill Foley set the organization up for success.  And McPhee says the Golden Knights are a team of second chances. There was a huge impact with the Olympic games for VGK with eight players representing five countries.  It took a while for VGK to return to normalcy with five players in the Gold Medal game.  VGK defeated the Kings in the first game back, but proceeded to lose six of seven games and it eventually cost Bruce Cassidy his job.  Cassidy was also affected by participating with Team Canada. The Golden Knights have to fill some holes at forward spots this offseason - either internally or through trades. The Golden Knights made four trades already this post-season.  A league-wide trend saw 83 players dealt in a 13-day span.  Kelly McCrimmon explained to the mdeia that a lot of teams were forced to make trades this season against the rising cap and a lack of top players in free agency. McCrimmon was able to shed salary and restock draft picks. The Golden Knights apparently are still trying to shop goalie Adin Hill.  A report that surfaced yesterday said that teams are asking for VGK to retain part of Hill's salary.  Kelly McCrimmon has said in the past that he wouldn't retain salary for any player.  Even though McCrimmon gave Hill a vote of confidence last week, he still is looking for a trade to get some more assets perhaps and the Golden Knights are trying to move up Carl Lindbom from the AHL.  The Golden Knights are also facing another decision with William Karlsson, who like Mark Stone, heads into his contract year.  Karlsson has been injury plagued but still managed nine points with Mitch Marner in the playoffs.  And VGK signed defenseman Lukas Cormier, a depth piece who can contend for playing time in a battle for the seventh defenseman spot.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. The Golden Knights and Mark Stone have not discussed future plans for the VGK Captain.  Stone enters his contract year without any assurance the team will extend him.  He carries a $9.5 million cap hit currently and a national outlet reported this weekend the talks have now been put on the backburner.  Stone has missed 170 games during his 7 seasons with the Golden Knights.  The Anaheim Ducks now have four days to decide if they want to match the Flyers offer sheet for Leo Carlsson.  It would come at a hefty price of 5-years and $90-million. We break down how the Golden Knights could make up for the 37 regular season goals that Pavel Dorofeyev scored this past season, before he was traded to the Rangers.  We are in agreement that it could be by committee, with everyone having to step up their game.  Kelly McCrimmon mentioned Dorofeyev picked up the scoring when Jonathan Marchessault left the franchise two seasons ago.  Dorofeyev stepped up his game and scored 72 goals over two seasons.  And this season he scored 20 power play goals.  Chris makes a strong case for why VGK should re-sign Reilly Smith.  His stats were strong and he probably has a chip on his shoulder after being scratched throughout the playoffs. Kelly McCrimmon said losing Pavel Dorofeyev was expected after his camp said they wanted more money than VGK could offer, while still staying cap compliant.  McCrimmon chalked it up as "the business of hockey." The return from the New York Rangers was five draft picks, including a first rounder for the Golden Knights.  The big question that now looms is how will VGK make up for Dorofeyev's 72 regular season goals the past two seasons? Just when we thought VGK would have zero first round picks in the NHL Draft, we saw the Golden Knights trade Pavel Dorofeyev to the Rangers to get not only a first-rounder, but they parlayed those picks into more assets and selected a Finnish defenseman Juho Piiparinen with the 29th overall pick.  VGK loses its leading-scorer over the past two seasons.  Moreover, Dorofeyev scored 20 goals on the man advantage this season.  The winger could have been offer-sheeted Monday, but that process could have been a lose-lose for VGK.  Dorofeyev was quickly signed to a deal worth $11 million AAV over seven years.  A massive raise.  We believe that VGK will package the picks for a bigger deal, perhaps for Dylan Larkin or Zach Werenski.  We felt there was no path to VGK retaining Dorofeyev, who's asking price had risen based on his success the past two seasons.  We discuss what we believe could be next for VGK as the Draft enters its second day. The Golden Knights could be facing a complete overhaul in its roster over the off-season.  There could be 6-10 new players in the lineup next season.  That includes a mix of free agent signings, traded and internal promotions.  The NHL and VGK released the pre-season schedule.  It's only four games for each team because the NHL is expanding the regular season to 84 games.  The preseason winds up against the Sharks at T-Mobile Arena on Sept. 26 And, the season will begin three days later.  Teams will play each divisional rival four times this upcoming season.  And, Bill Foley announced Monday that he has launched a big to bring an NBA franchise to Las Vegas. The Golden Knights are still in the mix to get Dylan Larkin, the current Red Wings captain, via a trade.  VGK, Florida and Minnesota are the top three choices for the center.  It is believed that the Golden Knights would have to move its leading goal-scorer Pavel Dorofeyev and add some other pieces to complete the trade.  Jack Eichel and Larkin are friends.  Adding Larkin would give VGK a 30-30 player on its second line. Mitch Marner went silent the last three games of the Stanley Cup Final.  And that got the Toronto media and fanbase buzzing. The Golden Knights were shutout by the Canes 3-0 Sunday night at the Fortress, ending the Stanley Cup Final series.  Carolina wins the best of seven series on VGK's home ice 4-2.  Brandon Bussi stopped all 22 shots he faced.  The Golden Knights offense was stifled by the Canes as VGK went 18:37 between shots in the second to third periods.  Taylor Hall started the scoring early as he got behind the VGK defense and beat Carter Hart. Jackson Blake scored the second Canes goal and a third period Nick Ehlers empty netter sealed the win for Carolina.  The Canes won the last three games of the series.  Jordan Staal was the Conn Smythe winner for the series.  He scored goals in each of the first five games and dominated in the faceoff circle winning a Cup Final record 68% of his draws.  VGK had scoring chances in the sixth game.  Tomas Hertl had a couple of high-dangers and Jack Eichel rang another crossbar.  We talk about whether John Tortorella was outcoached in the series.  And the Hanifin-Anderrson pairing needs to be retooled defensively. The Stanley Cup will be in the building tonight at T-Mobile Arena.  The Golden Knights will have to win tonight plus one more game to capture the coveted Cup.  It's do-or-die for VGK.  If they lose, the season is over.  If not, it will force a seventh game in Raleigh.  The Golden Knights have lost two straight to the Canes. For the Golden Knights to win tonight, they need to play cleaner hockey and not turn the puck over as much as they have.  They also need to stay out of the penalty box, because the Canes scored two power play goals the last game.  VGK will have to adjust without William Karlsson in the lineup tonight.  We will see what the line combinations look like. The Golden Knights are back to square one without William Karlsson's services for Game 6.  He has an apparent broken wrist and Torts said he will be missing from the lineup.  Will this put Mitch Marner back to centering the second line?  VGK had major issues late in the season when they couldn't figure out how to roll four consistent lines when Karlsson missed 68 regular season games.  The Golden Knights  goaltending has been poor with Carter Hart in net. The Golden Knights struggled after scoring a first period goal in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes.  Carolina could eliminate VGK Sunday at T-Mobile Arena.  VGK looked listless after that.  Pavel Dorofeyev is the only player that scored for VGK and he put the puck in net twice to score his first goals of the Cup Final.  Andre Svechnikov scored twice for the Canes, both on power play opportunities.  It was a game in which the Golden Knights accumulated 10 penalty minutes.  The Golden Knights looked like the tired team.  The Canes were hitting VGK a lot during the early part of the game.  We have our thoughts on what VGK has to do to win Game 6 and it's that time for our weekly WTF feature.  FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. A lot is riding on tonight's Game 5 in Raleigh with the Cup series tied at 2-2.  The Golden Knights enter hostile territory as they look to gain an advantage.  Added incentive:  the Stanley Cup will be in the building at T-Mobile on Sunday night.  VGK needs to stop turning the puck over as they have had costly giveaways - especially by Shea Theodore and Brayden McNabb in the Carolina zone. The Stanley Cup Final becomes a best of three series after the Hurricanes took Game 4 5-3.  The Golden Knights missed the opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 series lead as they played a sloppy game, had poor puck management and had 23 giveaways, mostly unforced turnovers.  The Golden Knight let in the game winner as Jordan Staal scored as a result of a Shea Theodore turnover. Dylan Larkin has put the Golden Knights on his list of three teams he would be open to sign with via a trade.  He requested a trade last week after the Red Wings failed to make the playoffs for a tenth consecutive season.  This was one of the Wings most disappointing seasons as they collapsed late in the season.  They blew leads and couldn't get any complimentary scoring late in the season.  According to a report in the Free-Press, Larkin says he would welcome a trade to VGK, Florida or Minnesota.  Only Minnesota has a state income tax.  We discuss who VGK could trade and that list would include Tomas Hertl and goalie Adin Hill.  Larkin is a solid two-way player who averages 60-70 points a season.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Golden Knights outlasted a game Carolina Hurricanes team 5-4 in double O.T.  to take a 2-games-to-1 series advantage in the Stanley Cup Final. Game 4 is set for Tuesday night in Las Vegas.  Following a scoreless first period, the Golden Knights scored four times in the second, including Mitch Marner's natural hat trick.  Tomas Hertl led off the scoring spree with a power play goal.  Then it was the Marner Show - scoring his first goal on an own goal by the Canes, he followed that up with a rebound goal and a breakaway goal.  VGK could have scored more, as they put the puck in the net two more times in the 2nd.  An offside and a goalie interference call erased the two goals upon challenges.  Marner also had a chance to add another goal, but he was stopped on a penalty shot when he said he didn't realize the Canes changed goaltenders with Brandon Bussi in net for the Canes. John Tortorella told the media that he would challenge the contraversial goalie interference call 10 out of 10 times. His decision led to a power play for Carolina in the third period and led to a Canes goal.  VGK blew a 2-0 lead, as both Brett Howden goals came in the first two periods.  It appeared VGK was in cruise control before a frenetic Carolina comeback. The Canes won 4-3 in overtime.  Logan Stankoven scored the first goal, Mark Janakowski followed with a second goal.  And when Torts lost his challenge, the Golden Knights found themselves a man short and the Canes capitalized on a Jordan Staahl tip in.  The Golden Knights would get the goal back to tie it with 1:21 remaining on a Mark Stone tip in.  But it was Seth Jarvis who scored the second power play goal of the night to walk it off for the Canes in O.T.  The series heads back to Las Vegas tied at 1-1.  The NHL released a statement last night that said the ref believed the puck was under Andersson and Barbashev went after Andersson and interfered with his ability to freeze the puck.  The goal was waived off immediately. The  Golden Knights rallied from a 2-0 deficit to come back and defeat the Carolina Hurricane 5-4 in a wild affair in Raleigh.  VGK leads the series 1-0 and takes back home ice advantage.  Tomas Hertl scored the game-winning goal late on a feed from Colton Sissons on give and go.  The VGK rally began when Shea Theodore scored a goal through traffic in the first period. John Tortorella saw his team was nervous and he took an early timeout to calm them.  Theodore pinched too deep and overplayed the puck on the first of two Nikolai Ehlers goals.  The second was a bad cross-ice pass by Jack Eichel that was intercepted.  Torts told the team to settle down and stop throwing the puck east west.  He told VGK they would get opportunities.  And they did.
