Who am I trying to impress instead of obeying God?

The First Word of Christmas Is… Courage.” The word “Advent” meaning “coming” and with the coming of Jesus means there less and less room for fear.  Sometimes fear threatens to overwhelm in loud and quiet ways in our life but what if this season we rediscovered the boldness at the heart of the Christmas story. From Zechariah’s long-held prayers to Mary’s surrender, from Joseph’s quiet obedience to the shepherds’ terrified wonder, Scripture reminds us that God still meets our fear with grace. Each week we’ll confront a different kind of fear—fear of asking, fear of what God asks of us, fear of what others may think, and fear of change—inviting Christ to turn our worry into worship. Come experience the hope, peace, and courage that arrive in the words of angels and the cry of a newborn King: “Do not be afraid.”

In a culture of discontent and self-focus, the Gospel calls us to a life of radical, resilient thanksgiving—a posture that resists cynicism, entitlement, and fear.Gratitude isn’t just a nice attitude—it’s an act of resistance. In a world that’s always wanting more, Jesus calls us to give thanks in every moment. In these two weeks, we’ll explore what it means to live a life of gratitude that transcends logic —one that confounds the world, honors God, and transforms our hearts. Come discover the joy of a life that dares to say, “Thank you” in the face of it all. 

Giving thanks in all circumstances is an act of holy rebellion—it refuses to let hardship, scarcity, or bitterness define our story.

Habakkuk prays a poetic, powerful prayer. He remembers how God acted in the past—with power and mercy.Even though there are no crops, no livestock, and no visible blessings, Habakkuk declares:“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. He gives me strength.”The book ends not with answers, but with trust.

God tells Habakkuk:“Write down the vision—it’s coming. It might seem slow, but it will happen.”God explains that the proud will fall, but the righteous will live by faith.Then, five “woes” are declared against Babylon:Greed, violence, exploitation, idolatry—these will all bring their downfall.God is still in control, even when evil seems to win.Big Idea - God is faithful.  Period.  

Habakkuk looks around and sees nothing but violence, injustice, and corruption. He cries out to God:“Why aren’t You doing anything?”God answers:“I am doing something—you just won’t believe it. I’m sending the Babylonians to bring judgment.”Habakkuk is shocked.“Wait—how can You use a nation even worse than us to carry out justice?”Big Idea - God will stop at nothing to bring about redemption and restoration

The Gospel is God’s redemptive story of love, grace, and reconciliation—and it becomes our story through Jesus.

Complete joy isn’t found in perfect circumstances, but in abiding peace with God and hopeful trust in Christ.

Joy is made complete when we live with open hands—thankful, forgiven, and free.

Joy flows when our lives align with God’s greater purpose—not our own ambition.

C.S Lewis said, ““Joy is the serious business of Heaven.”  He is reminding us that joy isn’t a distraction from spiritual life—it’s the very essence of it. It’s rooted in divine reality, not earthly emotion or circumstance.  Over the coming weeks we hope to get DEEP into the structure of life that makes JOY possible and flourish.  We are using terms that we are familiar with related to the body - heart, mind, hands and soul to provide a slow motion look at the scriptures with the theme of JOY.    Joy isn’t about pretending life is easy—it’s about knowing we’re never alone.When we live in Christ’s love, joy becomes our strength, our witness, and our way of life.This series will challenge us to confess, connect, serve, and rest in God’s presence.Come and make your joy complete.
