Gingerbread-Blonde Wigs and Magical Chiffon Capes in Bewitched (2005)
Costume design breakdown of Bewitched (2005) starring Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, and Shirley MacLaine — directed by Nora Ephron and costume design by Mary Zophres. We're wrapping up Freaky Witch Month with the sweetest sorceress in suburbia: Bewitched (2005)! Nicole Kidman stars as Isabel Bigelow, a real-life witch trying to live a normal life, opposite Will Ferrell's egomaniac TV actor in Nora Ephron's meta rom-com remake of the '60s classic. Costume designer Mary Zophres (La La Land, The Big Lebowski) serves up vintage-meets-Y2K whimsy with cardigans, pastel skirts, and preppy capri pants that turn Kidman into the anti–Practical Magic witch — sweet, soft, and suburban. But the real style icon is Shirley MacLaine as Iris/Endora — a walking Technicolor spell in chiffon, feathers, and finger-loop capes! She's an old-Hollywood witchcore vision draped in 20 yards of fabric and pure chaos, the kind of diva smoke show only Shirley could pull off. In this episode, we chat about: Mary Zophres's flirty, feminine, and timeless designs Nicole Kidman's demure 2000s-meets-1960s wardrobe evolution Shirley MacLaine's over-the-top "murder robes" and real-life witchy vibes Manifesting a Bewitched remake starring Pedro Pascal Segment Highlights: Mary Zophres's credits and inspo Top Looks and trivia Add to Cart: the fashion moments that made us want to shop Bonus tangents include: Marie's coven-themed birthday dinner, Blaire getting babysat by Shirley MacLaine, and a spontaneous deep dive into 2000s remakes no one asked for (but we kind of love). Cursed Buttons and Corporate Blouses in Drag Me to Hell (2009)
This week, we're diving into the gloriously gross horror of Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell (2009), the ultimate cautionary tale about ambition, where one wrong decision will get you promoted to HELL! Costume designer Isis Mussenden (The Chronicles of Narnia, American Psycho) dresses loan officer Christine (Alison Lohman) in prim pencil skirts and promotion-ready blouses along with Mrs. Ganush's witchcore chic of scarves and handkerchiefs. Plus, we talk early-2000s horror aesthetics, animatronic goats, and why Christine's downfall might just be the most stylish damnation ever put on screen. In this episode, we chat about: Isis Mussenden's inspirations and early-2000s horror palette Christine's corporate-to-cursed costume evolution Mrs. Ganush's grotesque glam and "witch weapon" styling The symbolism of that cursed button Our "Add to Cart" picks: cursed accessories edition Bonus tangents include: Marie's old life working in a bank and her own finance fashion choices (minus the curses) Charmed and Buffy — the Halliwell Sisters get their shoutout Marie's crazy purse collection and "purse of the day" ...and more! Brooches, Bangs, & Deranged Auntie Energy in Weapons (2025)
Freaky witch month continues! Smear some red lipstick and snap some twigs because we're worshipping at the altar of Gladys, Amy Madigan's instantly iconic nightmare auntie in Weapons (2025). Costume designer Trish Summerville outfits her like a 1970s thrift witch in oversized tinted glasses, plastic baubles, and the kind of chaotic color-clashing that can give you anxiety (in a good way). We unpack her intense microbangs and ritual props, praise her brooch game, and discuss why she deserves a prequel. Then, we get into conspiracy theories about her Madonna Inn-print carpet bag! We also discuss Marie's visit to the Showgirls Museum in Vegas. Tune in now! Runway Hexes and Witchy Statement Coats in Beastly (2011)
Embrace the suck! We're hexing high-schoolers this week with Beastly, a 2010s retelling of the fable Beauty and the Beast starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens. Costume designer Suttirat Anne Larlarb conjured up typical 2010s teen looks for the leads, but the real style star is Kendra, Mary-Kate Olsen's couture witch who curses Pettyfer's golden boy and steals the movie with her fashion goth looks. Whether it's sculptural coats, veiled top hats, or caged heels, she's giving runway occult and we're loving every minute of it. We break down every look this witch gives and also discuss the cybergoth-esque, "modern beast" makeup. Other topics include embracing Halloween consumerism culture, Marie's issue with casting hot men as monsters (see Nosferatu, Frankenstein) and the Olsen Twins' iconic Y2K style. Tune in now! Velcro Skirts and Dinosaur Hair Clips in Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985)
Put on your side ponytail and get ready to dance, because we're rewinding to the ultimate VHS slumber party/ KTLA classic: Girls Just Want to Have Fun! This post-Footloose, pre-Dirty Dancing gem stars a baby Sarah Jessica Parker as Janey, an army brat with a dream of joining Dance TV, and Helen Hunt as her rebellious BFF Lynn — aka our surprise style ICON. Costume designer Betty Pecha Madden delivered 1980s teen movie fashion gold, from velcro tearaway tartan schoolgirl skirts and Adidas kicks to Lynn's unforgettable collection of hair accessories (stegosaurus clips, rainbow feet barrettes, raccoon hats, a grasshopper pillbox hat, and even a Cinderella rat crown). We break down all the campy, '80s looks and dive into the film's stacked cast (hello, Gina Gershon and maybe Robert Downey Jr.?!), and the underrated soundtrack. Dancin' in Heaven! Suits on Suits and Hypebeast Glam with 'The Studio' Costume Designer Kameron Lennox
This week, Marie is joined by Emmy-nominated costume designer Kameron Lennox to talk about dressing the cast of The Studio! Kameron breaks down the inspiration behind Matt's (Seth Rogen) never-repeat custom suits, Sal Saperstein's (Ike Barinholtz) sleazy-chic lapels, and the bold color palettes that distinguish each character. We also get into Patty's (Catherine O'Hara) regal Max Mara–inspired looks, Quinn's (Chase Sui Wonders) vintage-infused wardrobe (including some of Kameron's own pieces!), and of course, the wild, sartorial chaos of Kathryn Hahn's character, Maya! From sourcing fabrics in Italy to pulling a Galliano gown for Zoe Kravitz, Kameron shares how she blended present-day style with Old Hollywood glam to make the show's world feel both timeless and fashion-forward. Plus, we chat about her work on Platonic, our shared obsession with brooches, whether or not Maya would accessorize with Labubus in season 2 (had to), and more! From Von Dutch to Von Furstenberg in Freaky Friday (2003)
We're in early-2000s Los Angeles with Freaky Friday! When a rebellious teen (Lindsay Lohan) and her uptight mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) swap bodies, they also swap styles—from studded belts, raglan tees, and guitar-pick chokers to a now-iconic boho patchwork Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress with knee-high suede boots. Costume designer Genevieve Tyrrell (Swingers, Go) put our favorite Pink Slip queen in studded belts, cargo pants, raglan tees, and chunky highlights, then turns up JLC's glam with that now-iconic boho patchwork DVF dress, knee-high suede boots, and a pixie cut that screams "rich mom in Laurel Canyon." We relive the era's Avril Lavigne vibes, chunky highlights, and Von Dutch sightings, plus all the LA nostalgia (RIP House of Blues). Tune in and meet us at Third Street Promenade! Feather Fans and Hardware Store Glam in Burlesque (2010)
Wagon Wheel Watusi! This week, we're shimmying into Burlesque (2010), the bedazzled fever dream of a movie musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera. It's all rhinestones and ringmaster vibes, and we're here for every glittering second. Costume design legend Michael Kaplan (Blade Runner, Fight Club, Flashdance) found inspiration everywhere—from sherbet dessert to Magritte and Man Ray—for these stunning costumes. We break down Cher's Bob Mackie tuxedo-glam, Xtina's transformation from small-town waitress to burlesque bombshell, and that dreamy off-the-shoulder green silk gown that deserves a spot in the Green Dress Hall of Fame (move over, Atonement!). Marie swoons over surrealist hand-motif bodysuits while Blaire confesses her love for a silver chunky heel and opera gloves. We also dive into the film's Pussycat Dolls origins and why this movie feels like a chaotic cabaret dream you never want to wake up from. Murderous Millinery and Chaotic Couture in Another Simple Favor (2025)
We're baaaaack! After a mini-hiatus, we're kicking things off with some brain candy: Another Simple Favor! The sequel to A Simple Favor has everything we love: mystery, murder, and a wardrobe so extra you could watch the movie on mute and still be entertained. Blake Lively returns as Emily, serving high camp, insane hats, oversized tailoring, and looks that scream Murder Mommy Mob Wife, all courtesy of costume designer Renée Ehrlich Kalfus (A Simple Favor, Hidden Figures, Friends With Benefits). Anna Kendrick's Stephanie may have a few cute 'fits, but let's be real: this is ol' blondie's runway. We break down the couture-level costumes, discuss how Blake's real-life stylist-free choices influence her character's wardrobe, and compare it all to the chaotic looks in It Ends With Us (double pants trigger warning). You won't find any litig**tion speak here, but you WILL find us spiraling into tangents on Marie's totally healthy Babygirl obsession, our new segment (?) "Dakota Unchained," Party Girl's 30th anniversary, and even a little Seth Rogen love. It's unhinged, it's fabulous, it's Makeover Montage. Building Bruises and Bad Makeup: An Interview with Bottoms' Makeup Artist Natalie Johnson
Bottoms week continues! In this long-lost episode from the Makeover Montage vault, Marie sits down with the film's makeup artist Natalie Johnson for a deep dive into the bold, hilarious, and blood-soaked aesthetic of the breakout teen comedy. Natalie shares how '90s teen classics like Bring It On, Jawbreaker, Never Been Kissed, and She's All That inspired the film's hyper-stylized yet realistic high school looks, and how Fight Club served as a makeup reference for those epic fight scenes. From skincare prep to bruising techniques, Natalie gives us a behind-the-scenes look at crafting both beauty and carnage on set. Plus, she opens up about her journey from MAC Cosmetics to movie sets, her love for horror, and why collaboration with actors like Rachel Sennott and Havana Rose Liu made Bottoms such a treat! Tradwife Bots and Toxic Masculinity with 'Companion' Costume Designer Vanessa Porter
Imagine if your too-good-to-be-true boo was actually an android?! In this episode, Marie talks to Companion costume designer Vanessa Porter about her work on the sci-fi rom-com thriller, which stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple on a getaway with friends at a remote cabin—until hell breaks loose when one of the guests is revealed to be a companion robot! Vanessa breaks down how Iris's (Sophie Thatcher) French New Wave-inspired wardrobe of pastel cardigans, gingham rompers, and Reformation-worthy sundresses isn't just style goals, it's a commentary on control, fantasy, and good ol' toxic masculinity. They also discuss how dressing a character who doesn't pick her own outfits flips the script on traditional costuming, and how each carefully coordinated look reflects her creator's fantasy more than Iris herself. Plus: the cult-favorite necklace Marie's adding to cart, which classic brand is a Tradwife staple, and how to design a Stepford Wifey outfit with just the right amount of blood splatter. Tune in now! It's time to party like it's 1999! For this special NYE bonus episode, we're thrilled to welcome costume designer Katina Danabassis to the pod to discuss her work in the new A24 horror-comedy Y2K! Katina takes us on a nostalgic journey back to the turn of the millennium, where cyber-optimism and late 90s/2000s style ruled. From the shiny, chrome-infused looks to the iconic brands that defined the era (Abercrombie! Tommy Hilfiger!), Katina's costumes for Y2K perfectly capture the essence of this moment in time. She tells us how she meticulously sourced vintage pieces, collaborated with the cast, and infused personal touches to make the fashion in Y2K feel authentic. Bright Hair and Orange Hoodies in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Drum roll, please! For our final installment of our annual Dunstcember programming, we're (finally) diving into Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! Directed by the brill Charlie Kaufman, this mind-bending movie explores the idea of erasing memories of a failed relationship. Kate Winslet SHINES as the quirky and chaotic Clementine, with her ever-changing hair colors and eclectic vintage-inspired wardrobe. Costume designer Melissa Toth did an amazing job capturing Clementine's effortless, thrifted cool-girl aesthetic, right down to that signature orange hoodie. The film is STACKED with familiar and favorite faces, from preciouso Elijah Wood to cutie Mark Ruffalo—and Jim Carrey is so depression-hot in this one. While our beloved Kiki Dunst isn't the lead, she is a major part of the plot. This film is a true cinematic masterpiece, with its nonlinear storytelling, beautiful cinematography, and surreal dream sequences. We break down all the best fashion moments, from Clementine's cozy winter looks to her shocking skeleton jumpsuit. Those of you who watched The Jinx and followed the weird story of New York real estate heir and convicted murderer Robert Durst may be familiar with this film. Kirsten Dunst's Platform Flip Flops In Get Over It (2001)
DUNSTCEMBER HAS ARRIVED! We're kicking things off with one of the lower-tier (said lovingly) Shakespeare-inspired teen comedies: Get Over It! Not to be confused with A Midsummer Night's Rave...this loosely-based, A Midsummer Night's Dream adaptation stars Ben Foster as a high school senior trying to win back his ex-girlfriend by joining the school play. The film is stacked with more familiar faces like Sisqo, Mila Kunis, Shane West, and Martin Short (who is basically playing a young version of Oliver from Only Murders?!). Costume designer Mary Jane Fort, who also did Mean Girls and Bring It On, put Kirsten Dunst and co. in platform flip flops and graphic tanks galore. Vitamin C also makes an appearance. Vogt teamed up for this one, with Vogt overseeing Catwoman's iconic look. We discuss Selina Kyle's (Michelle Pfeiffer) transformation from bookish executive assistant to her DIY latex suit and the other wild costumes in the film. Bubble Skirts and Fishnet Arm Slings in Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Feed me, Seymour! We're diving into Little Shop of Horrors, the 1986 musical comedy about a sentient plant that's hungry for human blood. This pick comes courtesy of Blaire, a self-proclaimed "musical hater" with one major exception: this cult classic. Marit Allen (Eyes Wide Shut, Brokeback Mountain, The Witches) was the costume designer behind these fun '80s-does-50s/60s' looks, and we quickly see similarities between some costumes in this and another movie she designed, Mermaids. From Audrey's leopard print wiggle dress to Seymour's dork-chic plaids, we have a grand old time dissecting these campy costumes. Other topics include childhood crushes on Rick Moranis, Steve Guttenberg, and Bill Murray; Megan Thee Stallion's looks in the "Bigger In Texas" music video; Georgina Trevino's my cunty purse; whether or not we're watching Wicked, "Adele Dazeem," and more unhinged tomfoolery from your favorite costume design-loving duo. TikTok thrifting queen and sustainable style icon Macy Eleni joins the pod to talk about one of her favorite films — 2003's View from the Top, a lesser-known, underrated film from the early aughts, rom-com era. Gwyneth Paltrow is Donna, a small-town girl with big hair and an even bigger ambition to be a Chanel lipstick-wearing, first-class international flight attendant! Costume designer Mary Zophres (La La Land, Babylon, Ghost World) put Paltrow, Christina Applegate, Kelly Preston, and Candice Bergen in Moschino, D&G, Betsey Johnson, Versace, Escada, and DVF from the era, and every look is DIVINE! And the flight attendant uniforms range from sassy to sophisticated. This is a true, overlooked fashion movie that we are unearthing TODAY! We also discuss our love for Brittany Murphy, Gwyneth's "rich face," the power of pawn shop finds, and, of course, Macy's new book, Second Chances! Plus, so much more. Hot Topic Goth Corsets and Cozy Fall Turtlenecks in Urban Legend (1998)
We bid farewell to October by having Halloween Queens' Natalie Burris back on the pod to dissect the late '90s fashions of Urban Legend! This post-Scream slasher is stacked with the hottest stars of the era, with the killer terrorizing college kids by referencing Urban Legends. A super fun concept with great costume design by Mary Claire Hannan (The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Jackie Brown, Red Eye, Four Rooms!). We love the autumn-esque, Gilmore Girls vibe of Alicia Witti's final girl's turtlenecks, Danielle Harris as the goth roommate in all of her Hot Topic deliciousness, and Tara Reid's sexy looks as the campus radio host/sex advice columnist. Questions we have: was Sasha's (Tara Reid) Halloween costume somehow based on Tiffany from Bride of Chucky (it may have been filming at the same time?!), and was Niecy Nash's character in Scream Queens inspired by Loretta Devine in this film? Other discussions include Marie's JNCOs, The Substance (and Natalie's incredible Halloween costume as The Star), the lack of goth side characters in movies today, and we long wistfully for the celebrity rumors and urban legends of yore….(gerbil, stomach-pumping, etc.). Baby Bangs and Funky Florals In Scream 3 (2000)
"All I know about trilogies is that in the third one, all bets are off." It may be the most controversial and hated of the franchise, but we love the campy, extremely meta Scream 3! Costume designer Abigail Murray gives us some super fun, highly underrated looks in the "Ghostface Goes Hollywood" third installment of the film series. We get into Sidney's (Neve Campbell) relaxed final girl style and accessory ode to her dead ex, Parker Posey as the hilarious, stylish, cool-girl Jennifer Jolie, and, of course, Gale's (Courtney Cox) bangs! We also spill the tea on Marie's witchy Practical Magic birthday dinner, so be warned. PS. Don't forget to leave a review! There may be a surprise you can find out about this episode... '90s Stoner Style in Idle Hands (1999)
There is evil out there, and I'm gonna kick its ass! We've got a late '90s Halloween movie for y'all — Idle Hands! The one has a rare issue; there wasn't a costume designer credit, but a kickass wardrobe department still put the cast in fun 'fits. We get into the [Devon] Sawassance and discuss his underrated, incredible performance in this movie. Hello, that hand acting? Oscar-worthy. We love you, Devon! We also discuss Seth Green as a '90s style icon, vintage bowling shirts, hesher style, and…Pornstar clothing (memba them?). Top of the show chat and glorious tangents include Marie's new Practical Magic prop acquisition, Queensylvia Akuchie's gorgeous costume design in the new season of Bel-Air, what Blaire's watching (Grotesquerie; Spoiler: She's loving Travis Kelce), and another horror dude renaissance — Kyle Gallner! To kick off our comeback era, we're diving into MaXXXine, starring Mia Goth as the fame-obsessed final girl of Ti West's X film series. Listen as we discuss our favorite KILLER looks from this 1980s Hollywood-set slasher, with Marie sharing unpublished tidbits from her interview with Mari-An. Before we get into the film, we catch up on things we didn't get to discuss these past few months, like: LongLegs (Blaire says Nic Cage is "dressed like Nanny on The Muppet Babies," and we're still recovering from that...); Practical Magic 2 (still awaiting confirmation of the AUNTS in the sequel); our official new style icon, Karis, the fabulous TikTok tween show pig champion; our spooky season finds, and more. Frankenflops and Heath Ledger's Tank Tops in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Happy 25th anniversary to the 1999 classic, 10 Things I Hate About You! We've talked about Kim Tillman's work on the pod before (Doppelgänger, Wild Things). This time, she created thoughtful and fashionable costumes for the Seattle teens in this reimagined Taming of the Shrew. Kim dressed Julia Stiles's character in low-slung pants, cropped camo, and Frankenflops, opposite her sister's (Larisa Oleynik) ultra-girly style. Heath Ledger (in his breakthrough role) got the stylish bad-boy treatment in custom-dyed tank tops and PVC pants. Pay Equity Now! With Costume Designers Ariyela Wald-Cohain and Whitney Anne Adams
Did you know that costume designers, the majority of whom are women, are paid nearly 30 percent less than other, male-dominated creative department heads? Despite costume design being a pivotal part of storytelling in cinema, it has been historically dismissed as "women's work," leading to the artisans being underpaid and under-appreciated in their industry. In this very special episode, we're covering the Pay Equity Now movement! Blaire chats with costume designers and friends of the pod, Ariyela Wald-Cohain and Whitney Anne Adams, who are co-chairs of the Costume Design Guild's Pay Equity Steering Committee, about this important initiative. Boudoir Chic and 'Ringmaster Red' in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982)
Y'all come back now, ya hear? In The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie musical, Dolly Parton is Miss Mona, the madam of the local Chicken Ranch, a historic and beloved brothel in a small Texas town. Sheriff Ed Earl (Burt Reynolds) helps out Miss Mona by looking out for the brothel, but the duo runs into trouble when TV personality Melvin Thorpe tries to expose the ranch. Dolly's outfits are a serious boudoir chic feast for the eyes, with ruffles, lace, feathers, sequins, and floor-length "ringmaster red" garments, costumed by the late, great Theodora Van Runkle (Troop Beverly Hills). As usual, we break down our favorite looks but also discuss Burt Reynold's hunkdom (and how we'd cast Pedro Pascal in his role for our imaginary remake). There's also chisme about Dolly and Burt hating each other during filming, so Blaire has a request for Ryan Murphy: to make the next installment of Feud be about their drama! For our first film for Dunstcember, we're discussing this 2000 cheer-com starring Kirsten Dunst as the captain of a high school cheerleading squad who discovers her team's legacy has all been a lie! Costume design is by the amazing Mary Jane Fort (Mean Girls). We talk about the difference between the Toros' uniforms and East Compton Clovers' fashion-forward looks, the Buddha graphic clothing item that was everywhere, Canyon Group robes, and Cliff's (Jesse Bradford) choice of band shirts. Blaire also educate us on something she calls Food Jail, inspired by a celebrity's *interesting* food combinations. And Marie guesses the character's zodiac signs for our Cosmic Costumes segment. Angsty Teen Goth Style in Ginger Snaps (2000)
To finish October, we're talking about 2000's Ginger Snaps on the pod this week! The film, which Marie describes as the Canadian precursor to Jennifer's Body, is about two sisters named Ginger and Brigitte who are super close (and super angsty!). One day, Ginger gets her period for the first time, AND bit by a werewolf, and becomes a real ravenous b****! There are a lot of parallels between this and Jennifer's Body, such as the opposites-attract dynamic between the sisters, the blood-hungry transformation, and even the makeover moment reveal that happens during an iconic slow-motion, walking down the hallway scene. Costume designer Lea Carlson put Ginger and Brigitte in oversized cardigans, maxi skirts, thin choker necklaces, and animal skull jewelry. Forgot Gilmore Girls fall fashion, it's all about Ginger Snaps werewolf-girl style! We also talk about House of Usher Raymond and the Y2Kills exhibit at Mystic Museum in LA, and we reminisce about going to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Night back in the day. Plus, Blaire makes an excellent case for more 'goth moms' in movies. The Symbolism of the Color Red in Run Sweetheart Run (2020)
Keeping with our October whores4horror theme, this episode is on the feminist horror flick Run Sweetheart Run, one of Blaire's faves! Cherie (Ella Balinska) is a single mom and secretary at an LA law firm who has to go to dinner with her boss' client. Sure, he may be hot and rich, but he's actually a bloodthirsty demon who chases her all around the city. Dating in LA is hard! Costume designer Nadine Haders used touches of symbolic red throughout the film and other interesting choices, like a decorated military jacket and karate suits. Other things we discuss? Oh, just the great Hoe Bag vs. Slut Kit debate, men in gray sweatpants, and Blaire reminisces about her interesting night at Schwartz and Sandy's (for all your Vanderpump peeps). Tune in, now! '90s Arm Cuffs and Dog Tag Necklaces in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
What are you waiting for?! The next installment of Marie and Blaire's horror faves for October is "I Know What You Did Last Summer" with costume design by Catherine Adair (Desperate Housewives, Fate: The Winx Saga, Perry Mason). We've already done the sequel (as we sometimes go backward on this here pod), but now is the time to celebrate our Croaker Queen Helen Shivers's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) totally modern cut-out dress and sophisticated New York-inspired 'fits. We also talk about Julie's (Jennifer Love Hewitt) cozy sweaters, crop tops, and Paddington Bear hat, Barry's (Ryan Philippe) preppy sweaters, the '90s trend of dog tag necklaces and military fatigues, and the risks of wearing tons of jewelry when you have a vengeful, hook-swinging killer on the loose. Then for Cosmic Costumes, Marie tries to analyze Helen and Julie's sun signs. Other topics of discussion include Marie's week of being Ms. Goop Paltrow, her 24-hour trip to see Lady Gaga sing jazz in Las Vegas, and her psychic medium reading, while Blaire clears up the difference between Timothy Olyphant and Josh Duhamel, and makes a case for all of us to watch a movie called "The VelociPastor."
