Pakistan’s Wild Beauty: A Solo Female Journey

Ayyyy welcome back to your fave travel podcast. Thanks for tuning in and getting yourself ready to make some MOVES with me. Let's get it!In Season 5 Episode 3, I am joined by Holly, a Scottish-born psychologist who splits her time between therapy rooms, airport gates, and life in Glasgow enjoying brunch with her giant rescue dogs. Fresh off a seven-month adventure and already planning her next escape, Holly has mastered the art of turning long weekends into full-blown expeditions.A self-confessed mountain addict, she’s chased peaks across New Zealand, India, Nepal, South America, and Pakistan. Equal parts meticulous planner and spontaneous risk-taker, Holly thrives on routine — yet has no problem throwing it out the window for the sake of an adventure. From solo hitchhiking across India and Pakistan to trekking to Everest Base Camp unguided, she’s constantly testing her limits… usually by trying to cram five days of trekking into two just to squeeze in one more experience. In this episode, we dive deep into Holly’s time, as a solo female traveler, in Pakistan — from the towering mountains of the north and chaotic long-distance journeys to the hospitality, cultural surprises, and moments that completely changed her perspective on the country. We talk about what it’s really like traveling solo there, the misconceptions people often have before visiting, and why Pakistan became one of the most memorable destinations she’s ever explored. To follow Holly's moves on social media:InstagramFollow the Makin Moves with Matt Podcast on Social Media:InstagramConnect with your Host on Social MediaMatt: Instagram | FacebookMakin Moves with Matt: InstagramMakin Moves with Matt: TikTok

    Inside Iraq: A Backpacker’s Perspective

Ayyyy welcome back to your fave travel podcast. Thanks for tuning in and getting yourself ready to make some MOVES with me. Let's get it!In Season 4 Episode 24, I am joined by Craig hailing from Liverpool, England. Growing up, Craig didn’t have many opportunities to travel abroad with his family—just a single trip to Spain—but he was fortunate enough to join friends on a few international trips during high school, which sparked his early curiosity about the world. It wasn’t until university that Craig truly realized he wanted to travel. Inspired by YouTube creators like Yes Theory, he found himself increasingly drawn to the idea of exploring the world. During COVID, Craig and his friends even planned a month-long USA road trip, optimistically expecting travel to resume by summer. While that plan didn’t materialize as expected, the lockdowns gave Craig time to reflect. Between university, part-time work, and gaming, he consumed more travel content than ever—and that’s when he decided he wanted a different path.Rather than pursue a traditional 9–5 career in mechanical engineering, the field he studied, Craig set his sights on combining travel with content creation. Over the following year, he began taking smaller trips and producing videos whenever possible, building momentum between lockdowns and completing his master’s degree. After graduating in 2021, Craig focused on saving for his first major solo backpacking adventure. In 2022, he took the leap—leaving his job, selling his car, and booking a one-way flight to Colombia. He spent four and a half months in South America, including two weeks in Ecuador, before returning home to regroup and save for his next journey.Since then, Craig has visited 42 countries across five continents, with the goal of exploring every country in the world while turning his passion for travel storytelling into a full-time career. In this episode, Craig shares his experience solo backpacking through Iraq, offering a unique and eye-opening perspective on a destination often misunderstood. His journey takes him through Iraqi Kurdistan, the historic city of Mosul, the tranquil Mesopotamian Marshlands, the bustling capital of Baghdad, and the ancient ruins of Babylon—highlighting both the country’s rich history and the warmth of its people. Living and Volunteering in Northern Thailand

Ayyyy welcome back to your fave travel podcast. Thanks for tuning in and getting yourself ready to make some MOVES with me. Let's get it!In Season 4 Episode 21, I am joined by Deanna, hailing from the UK. Deanna’s love for travel began at 15, when she fundraised for a month-long volunteer trip to Borneo with her school. Experiencing a completely different way of life sparked a desire to truly immerse herself in future travels, even though she didn’t yet have the confidence or know how that would look. After COVID, while working at a convenience store, the urge to travel returned. Discovering au pairing led her to Orlando, Florida at 19, where she spent two years traveling across the United States on her days off, visiting 21 states and gaining the confidence to travel solo. She later volunteered in Tanzania for two months, an experience that pushed her far outside her comfort zone and deepened her connection to meaningful travel. In February 2025, after a year of saving, Deanna set off for Asia, beginning with three months in India filled with local festivals, personal growth, and lifelong friendships. But it was Thailand that truly defined her travel style. After meeting a fellow traveler in a hostel, she was invited to stay in a remote village in northern Thailand. The week that followed — planting rice, helping on a farm, wild camping, trying unfamiliar foods, and learning about the Karen people — became a turning point. That experience showed Deanna that immersive travel, living alongside locals and experiencing daily life firsthand, is what she connects with most. Through documenting her journey, she aims to share perspectives and ways of life many people may never otherwise see. What It Was Like Backpacking Myanmar

Ayyyy welcome back to your fave travel podcast. Thanks for tuning in and getting yourself ready to make some MOVES with me. Let's get it!In Season 4 Episode 19, I am joined by Bailey from the Land Down Under- actually my first Aussie on the pod! Bailey, a full time traveller from Newcastle, Australia, has been travelling on and off for the last 10 years. After returning home from a 3 week trip to Europe in 2022, Bailey decided to leave my job, sell his belongings and head back over, this time just with a backpack and a one way ticket. He had anticipated 6-12 months, but now it's been a little over 3 years of full time travelling.About 6 months into his trip, Bailey decided to commit to my childhood dream of visiting every country in the world. Bailey had originally written it off as impossible, but found himself in the deep snow in Svalbard, Norway, realising that with a bit of effort, he can get myself anywhere. Bailey has since travelled across 67 countries (as of October 2025) throughout Europe, Asia and Australia. But don’t worry, the other continents will be getting some love soon!Bailey has racked up countless dadlore stories throughout the years now, including being stuck at high altitude in the Pamir mountains, detained and interrogated by Russian immigration, and traversing multiple active war zone  countries (it’s becoming a bad habit now), as well as working as a hobby winemaker in Bulgaria, snorkelling the pristine beaches of the Maldives and summiting a volcano in Iceland just days before it erupted. Bailey is a true believer that you can find adventure anywhere if you go looking for it!In today's episode, we dive into Bailey's recent trip to Myanmar-one of the world’s most misunderstood and complicated destinations.Often reduced to headlines about conflict and political turmoil, Myanmar is also a country of breathtaking beauty, deep spirituality, and resilient people — realities that rarely make international news. Traveling through Yangon, the ancient temples of Bagan, and the purpose-built capital Naypyidaw, this episode explores what it’s actually like to visit a country experiencing one of the longest ongoing civil wars in modern history. Tune in to hear Bailey's perspective and why this country shouldn't just solely be reduced to its negative global image. To follow Bailey's moves on social media: InstagramTikTokRead Bailey's Blog:WebsiteFollow the Makin Moves with Matt Podcast on Social Media:InstagramConnect with your Host on Social MediaMatt: Instagram | FacebookMakin Moves with Matt: InstagramMakin Moves with Matt: TikTok

    Across West Africa by Road

Ayyyy welcome back to your fave travel podcast. Thanks for tuning in and getting yourself ready to make some MOVES with me. Let's get it!In Season 4, Episode 17, I am joined by Jacquelyn who is not your average traveler. An education strategist from upstate New York, Jacquelyn has spent most of her adult life living and working in some of the world’s most complex and overlooked regions. From Sudan—where she lived from 2015 until the outbreak of war in 2023—to a year running an NGO in South Sudan, and now calling Norway home, Jacquelyn's life has been shaped by places few people ever experience. With 150+ countries and territories under her belt, Jacquelyn is known for traveling overland, chasing borders, and seeking out destinations far beyond the typical tourist trail—unrecognized states, remote regions, and corners of the map most people never consider. Her adventures have included following the equator through eleven countries across three continents, venturing deep into the Amazon, and riding a cargo barge down the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 2022, Jacquelyn was awarded Most Intrepid Traveller by NomadMania—a title that perfectly captures her fearless, curious, and deeply intentional approach to seeing the world. Her stories aren’t just about where she’s been—but what it truly means to travel. In this episode, Jacquelyn takes us deep into her overland journey across West Africa, traveling through Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Liberia—navigating chaotic borders, long bush taxis, unpredictable roads, and the raw, unfiltered realities of travel in a region few outsiders ever explore this way. We talk logistics, safety, culture shock, unforgettable moments, and what it’s really like to move slowly and intentionally through West Africa by land. Let's get it!In Season 4 Episode 8, I am joined by Valentin- a 23-year-old medical student from Munich with a growing passion for exploring the world at a human pace. Though he’s only been studying medicine for a year, some of his greatest lessons have come from the road. Last year, Valentin traveled from Germany all the way to Timor-Leste, a journey spanning over 13,000 kilometers (8,077 miles) — and he did it entirely without taking a single flight. His route took him through the heart of Central Asia and the Middle East, crossing borders that many travelers only ever read about. From Europe into Turkey, through the deserts and ancient cities of Iran, across the rugged landscapes of Pakistan, and into Afghanistan, Valentin continued moving east — guided by curiosity, trust, and the belief that the world is far more nuanced than the headlines suggest. Ferries, buses, trains, shared taxis, hitchhiking — every transition became a story in itself. For Valentin, travel is not just about seeing places, but about seeing himself more clearly. The road became a mirror. The people who welcomed him, the uncertainty of not knowing what comes next, and the slow passage of time all shaped his understanding of who he is and how he wants to move through the world. What was supposed to be a simple family trip turned into a turning point—when the vacation ended, Jin decided not to go home. Whether it’s uncovering hidden cultural ties between Malaysia and Mexico, capturing the energy of Brazil’s Carnaval, or reflecting on fleeting romances, Jin hopes his content resonates with people who dream of something more. From a young age, Adri has always had a passion for exploring the world, but studying abroad in France truly ignited her wanderlust. Immersing herself in a new culture and forming friendships with people from all over the globe transformed the way I viewed travel. Since then, she's made it her mission to lead a life that’s as international as possible. As a software engineer with the flexibility to work remotely, she's been able to visit 31 countries across five continents—and the list keeps growing. By the end of the year, she’ll have added at least five more countries and a sixth continent to her journey. Each trip is an opportunity to dive deep into a city’s or country’s culture. She's not just a passerby; Adri strives to live like a local. Whether it’s savoring traditional dishes, participating in community activities, or reading works by local authors, she aims to fully embrace the essence of each destination. It’s been incredible to see how language can open doors to deeper connections and experiences. But her travel plans don’t stop there—Asia and Oceania are calling my name next! What keeps her on this endless journey is the constant inspiration she finds along the way. Every destination introduces her to new people who share their stories and recommendations, doubling her ever-growing bucket list.
